  It is a very old and very good printer. How can you find a job for parallel port is another story, but the statement, you can use the USB connection or parallel to share.   My hp 4600 color Laser Jet uses a parallel cable to connect to a Windows PC. When I had XP as the OS it worked fine. But now after the upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 64-bit OS it will not work and my PC does not even recognize it when it is plugged into the PC with the parallel to USB cable that worked so well before. So, what should I do to get the PC to recognize the Hp 4600 and have it printed again as before? (My first plan is to try to get the printer to work by hooking up through Wireless. Does anyone know if it will work? I'll answer my own question, if it does. Wish me luck! (Thank you!)

  According to the HP support site, there are drivers available for Vista and Windows 7 If you're lucky it. Download the appropriate drivers for your computers. According to the information of product from HP, this printer can be connected directly to the network by an ethernet cable. I don't see where it has wireless capability, but in any case ethernet is preferable for printer connections if possible.

  Connect the printer directly to your router or switch connected to your router and assign a static IP address outside the range the router DHCP. Then, install the drivers that you got from the HP website for your operating system.

  To set up the printer on the wireless network, please follow these steps:

  Restore the default values of the printers.
  Go to the configuration of the printer, select network settings, select restore default settings.

  Temporarily, connect the USB cable from the printer to the computer.

  Go to start, all programs, HP, Laserjet M1217 and select Wireless Network Configuration.

  Go through the wizard to reset back to the top the wireless.

  Test the printer on the wireless network.

• Printer does not print on HP Laser Jet 1020

  I use i5 Dell Studio with Windows 7 64 bit. I have a problem in printing using HP Laser Jet 1020. I have no problem with other printers such as HP Laser Jet 2600n (wireless network) and all-in-one HP PSC 1410.

  With HP LJ 1020, no response from the printer when printing (from all programs). I have re-installed the latest driver from the Web site of HP but does not help. When printing, the printer does not work with all the lights are flashing. However, the printer spooler showed that it was printed without the tail of any job. TeSp print page is not working too. Tried troubleshooting printer shows as not any problem. I tried the printer with a friend's computer and it works perfectly. Please kindly help thanks.

  Initially bought laser jet printer 1020 for windows xp laptop.

  I just bought a new pc with windows 7.

  I opt above site to download the upgrade for windows 7 for my new computer. Note: I did not use records of pilot provided when I bought the printer.

  I downloaded the upgrade, saved on my computer. I then ran the downloaded software and my printer was automatically installed and I tested with a test page print all right.

  The instructions (from your link), say that you have to connect USB, how do you connect it now? HP does not provide driver, but Windows 8 and 8.1 MAY have the generic/basic driver for it. The link also says you need to use Windows update. Amazing to see an old printer of 15-20 years is still in place and that the operating system running, it kills.
