I can point my Lab Manager 4.0.2 to point to another new vCenter Server?

Hi guys,.

I have a client with a LM4.0.2 production and we are considering moving to one another new/a vCenter server.

It is important to note that the new vCenter will NOT have the same DB or FULL of the old domain name. It's a completely different vCenter with other ESX hosts.

Now the questions:

Can I redirect my Lab Manager (VM) at the new vcenter without any problem?

What of the ESX (resource) on the old vcenter?

Is it possible to do this without downtime for laboratories? If this is not the case, how can I minimize downtime? cancel the deployment will be enough?

Does anyone have this done successfully?

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Eyal

etamir,

There are some excellent discussions within this forum on the same topic.  I strongly suggest to read first, and I'll see if I can find an example.

Before going further, data warehouses used in the new vCenter/ESX environment will be exactly the same as the current one?  If you want to keep all of your configurations, I need to know that the UUID of the LUN does not change during this process.

Can I redirect my Lab Manager (VM) at the new vcenter without any problem?

You can change the IP/domain FULL name vCenter in the settings section of the Lab Manager site... now on the problems that could result.

You will need to remove anything from the GUI of Lab Manager that has to do with the current vCenter (unedploy, unprepare host esx, resource pools, configurations etc.).  There will be more on this in the dedicated thread

What of the ESX (resource) on the old vcenter?

ESX doesn't really matter, it's the data UUID store that matters.  ESX is just virtual machines.  Note: you'll want to throw all States/suspend points on the VMS where processors are different on the ESX hosts.

> Is it possible to do this without downtime for laboratories?

No, there will be a form any downtime.  Either that LM site will be useless (no resources with Betclic, consoles will does not work until the guests are prepared, etc.).

> If not, how can I reduce downtime? cancel the deployment will be enough?

Yes, to cancel the deployment of will help... but there will be some lag as you reconfigure Manager of laboratory to use the new vCenter.

> Has anyone successfully done this?

Yes.  I saw others to do this.

  • Point at the new vcenter SRM

Here's a little history.  We have tried to update our existing 5.5 vCenter server, however we met a ton of SSO issues and could not go beyond the SSO 5.5 upgrade.  VMware offers a new server vCenter.  OK, so we did it, however I must now get pointed to this new server vCenter SRM.  This new vCenter Server uses the existing DB vCenter.  We have a separate server (5.1) SRM and SRM SQL server.

My question is, can I point my existing to the new server vCenter SRM Server AND update to 5.5?

I just wanted to update this in case someone else still has the same problem.  Contacted support VMware SRM.

They have referenced this KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2008033 - but they know that I don't "try this at home" without their help.  Their solution worked great however.

  • Can I use Lab Manager with VirtualCenter Server Foundation

Hi, now I'm choosing the license type for my gateway.

Regarding now I can't manage through Virtual Center more than 3 knots.

But I have a question. Can I use VirtualCenter Server Foundation License with VMware Lab Manager 3.0?

You can use vCenter Server Foundation with PF3. We currently have 3 standard ESX licenses and a vCenter Server Foundation and it works very well. The only limitation is that you cannot manage more than 3 guests, but in your case it does not appear that it will be a problem.

  • Lab Manager 4.0 Upgrade Plus new vSphere Env Migration

    Current environment

    -Lab Manager 3.0.1

    U2 - VirtualCenter 2.5

    ESX - hosts running ESX 3.5 U2

-All stores data on a San

Will be a new separate building Lab Manager 4.0.1. Server from scratch that connects to a U1 vCenter Server 4.

The plan is to migrate users to the former LM 3.0 installation to the new LM 4.0/vSphere 4 environment that will also have all new ESX host.  We will not pass original hosts to the new CR.

Is there a way to copy or move the existing channels of the VM to the new separate environment?

Or would we need to plan to export the models to a file server, and then import them into the new LM 4.0 environment and have users to start from scratch with these models?

For any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Concern: Data store mappings in LM are deleted once all hosts are posted?

No, virtual machines are stored in the database and mapped on the data store itself (and not on the host).  As long as the path of the UUID/NFS remains the same on different hosts, you should be fine.

    > Concern: LM 3 is not "supported" with VC 4, but he at least see and connect to it?

It's REALLY OBSCURE.  He can't let you connect at all, or to connect then say guests are not supported.  I've seen some clients get totally rejected and others which were broadcast in the config not taken in charge even when (as vCenter has been updated in the background and LM was not touched).  they did not actually change the address info and click 'OK '.

Concern: Assuming 3 LM can at least connect with VC 4, it will be able to reach the resource containing the host ESX 4 pools?

I think so, but as long as the Lab Manager database indicates that you use the right IP/Username/Password for vCenter... that should be enough to make Lab Manager 3 to 4 and do use the new vCenter for the Initialization Wizard.

You should immediately stop using the new hosts otherwise creating new virtual machines can spoil the vmdk channels. Try http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1005930.

  • Lab Manager dependencies on vCenter and terminology

I just Lab Manager, of course with ESX and vCenter.  I know very little about Virtualization, as this issue will prove.  What are the activities of configuration required on vCenter for Lab Manager able to build models, installation configurations and share library configurations?

Also, I'm trying to get my head around the difference between the data store, data center and media store.  My current knowledge are:

A data store has a one-way relationship to one or more hosts.  If storage is on a specific host (physical hard disk for example) then the data store has a relationship one of exlclusively with a single host.  Any file a host or a virtual machine can read/write can be read/written on this data store.

A data center is a logical collection (non-brique and mortar) hosts, data warehouses and virtual machines.  A data center can aggregate various data stores in a single logical storage available to all virtual machines area?  Or another flavor of physical storage can same issue on a Server Windows 2008 physical logically be conifgured such as NFS, and can share NFS join a data center?

A media store is a special part of a data store managed by the Manager of laboratory exclusively for the storage of files ISO for the construction of models in the laboratory Manager.  Is a media store part of a data store or part of a data center?

Is a model of vCenter the same model Lab Manager?

Any clarification on these questions would be more useful.

    Kind regards

    Rick

Good questions! Welcome to the Forums as well!

Your description data store is pretty right on. With the exception of the now for the storage of the local host, new technologies progressed to virtualize in the shared storage by the use of devices to Vritual Server.  Companies like HP lefthand and Openfiler to name a few.

With regard to the issues of data center

    > A datacenter can aggregate various data warehouses into a single logical storage available to all virtual machines area?

No, he learn better to keep data warehouses between HA/DRS separate clusters.  Now between the host in a cluster you "will share stroage" for the use of the DRS, HA or Storage vMotion.

    > can physical storage on a Server Windows 2008 physical logically be conifgured such as NFS, and can share NFS join a data center?

Yes you can - use Openfiler VSA to connect the two iSCSI LUNS and NFS for ESX. As long as the ESX host can access the virtual machine through the network.

  • In Lab Manager NETWORK load balancing

    Hello

I am trying to configure windows NLB on two or three windows 2008 machines in Lab Manager and I have problems. The IP Address of the cluster is not to pings to all other machines in the same configuration. I ping the IP cluster of the node itself. Haven't tried multicast and unicast not to no luck.

How can I get this to work?

    Thank you

NLB is not supported within a Lab Manager configuration.

In addition, Lab Manager does not support Multicast in closed configurations.

  • Using Server 2008 R2 64-bit models in Lab Manager 2.5

I created a template with Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit; enabled installed VMware tools and LM.  But when I use the model in a configuration that the LM does not seem to work, the machine is not renamed, and now is waiting for activation.  Also, I get an error when the virtual machine tries to run the autoconfig.vbs on login.

I understand that LM 2.5 does not support Server 2008, but is anyone aware of any workaround that I can put in place for this model is available to be used.  I really don't want to have to active post that we have only a limited deployment configuration Server 2008 activation available.

    All suggestions are well appecicated.

    -Greg

    Greg,

Lab Manager 2.5 is not a the code for Windows 2008 R2 support.  Even if you have a template, it will customize ever since LM tools does not even what is Windows 2008 R2.

The activation of Windows 2008 R2 component is due to hardware changes in the deployment of the model (new SID, UUID, NIC MAC addresses) and is a bit of a wait.

I don't know of a workaround or the other and I have a kit of Lab Manager 2.5 around tinkering with since it's already past end of life care.

  • creating virtual machines off templates in Lab Manager

    Hello

I am using vCenter Lab Manager 4.0.

I have created several models of machine virtual Windows.

Now, I would like to create virtual machines on these models.

Am I able to do it. ?

If so, how can I achieve that. ?

I checked in the guide, but found no relevant info.

    Maybe I'm missing something.

    Please provide help. !!

    Thank you.

    Santos,

First of all, make sure that the model is published.  Means published which are can be used as a virtual machine in the current organization.  If you need to use it in another, make sure you share the model to the user / the appropriate organization.

    2. go into your workspace: workspaces > hand

    3. click on the button "new Configuraiton.

    -Add virtual machines

    -Click OK

    4 deploy the configuration.

  • Lab Manager 4.0.2 upgrade process

    Say for 4.0.2 release notes

"before you can upgrade Lab Manager, you must upgrade the vCenter server.

See the Lab Manager 4.0 Installation and Upgrade Guide for

    more information. »

I watched the Installation and the Guide to upgrade for more information, but nothing is mentioned about the upgrade to vCenter 4.1.  Lab Manager 4.0.2 does support vCenter 4.0 Update1/2?  I think so but I would make sure before that I upgrade.   Here are my planned upgrade steps:

    1. put at manager level of laboratory 4.0.1 to 4.0.2

    2. turn to level vCenter 4.0 U1 to 4.1

    3 upgrade ESX 4 U2 to ESX 4.1

    is this supported?

Director of the laboratory of 4.0.2 is backward compatible with vCenter 4.0 u2/u1/GA

Regarding the upgrade process, unless you are already on a 64-bit operating system, then there's leg work to do the upgrade to vCenter himself.

If you are already there, then it is fine.  LM may be the first in this situation.

If you need to migrate vCenter, so long that the INVESTIGATION period change in fact... it is good.  If it does not change, you can tell the LM Wizard to change the IP address of vcenter.

If you forget to change it, you can simply update the web UI of LM.

overall, LM must be quite tolerant changes when you go in LM 4.0.2.

  • Internet access for virtual machines in Lab Manager

    Hello

Our lab environment is configured separately from corporate network and only some public IPs are able to access the internet. How I would install machinery in the Director of the laboratory to access the internet?

For example, IP range - 64.x.x.x. Creation of a network model with these IP addresses attached to physical networks and external public would give me access to the internet?

    Stan,

You would have to create a physical network that is attached to a vSwitch or Distributed Switch that can connect to this network of 64.x.x.x.

If configure you a Pool of IP, Lab Manager can manage physical network IP assignments to the virtual machines.  so if the virtual machines require Internet access, then they will need to access this network (somehow).

I tried to uninstall Lab Manager (only the program files) and re-installed but has not fixed anything and the same problem.  Restart the application pool does not solve anything, or that she just stops with the same error each time it is fixed.  I don't think nothing has changed on the side of the BONE, but I have not heard back from the admin of BONE.

Anyone encountered this and if so how can it be solved.

This is the closest I could find, since Lab Manager 2.5.x is really old.
