  See the response of Chet814, but let me add the following: a file extension is much more than a description. It tells you what type of file it is (and therefore which program is needed to open it - see below) and I highly recommend that you do * not * hide them.

  For example, a .doc file is a text file that can be opened with Microsoft Word (or a compatible program), an .mp3 file is an audio file, a .txt file is the text that can be opened with Notepad, Word, WordPad, etc.. a .jpg file is a graphic image that can be opened with any graphics program.
