• Hello, new Member! Q:lower power processor for IBM G41?

  Hello all, new Member here!

  A good friend gifted me an IBM Thinkpad G41(#2881) in excellent condition, and it uses a processor MHz Celeron D 2.53.

  I think it uses a processor of type "office" and wants to replace it with a smaller power, keeping the same speed, FSB, etc..

  This may be to ask the 'impossible' (I think that the CROWD support than he came with) but it can't hurt to ask, and this forum seems to be the best place to ask.

  I think there are two versions of the G41, Celeron D has a smaller MOB that hides the Pentium 4 (?), please correct me if I'm wrong.

  All suggestions are welcome, but I really need to know if someone did, (I don't have to blow a working machine!)

  Any "electronic" issues relating to these forums, I will gladly try to answer!

  Welcome to the forum!

  All G4x series units use full desktop processors and will not accept the classic laptop processors. Power efficiency is not something they are known for...

  You will need to swap the Board to allow the use of the high-end Pentium 4 HT processors that were available on some units G41.

  Is this useful? Not in my book - and I love G series ThinkPad. In all fairness, Celeron D does nothing to sneeze, and these machines can very usable today with some upgrade in the areas of the RAM and hard drive...

• ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows XP on G41

  I use a 2886-5TU G41 and I really screwed up.  I was cleaning my registry and it is a mess.  I lost all network connections, and they are not recoverable.  I reinstalled the software wireless and ethernet.  Device Manager reports the wireless card and Ethernet work.  But I can't connect what either as utilities connection - windows and IBM are corrupt.

  I d/l the 83cx71ww.exe and followed all the instructions.  I reinstalled sp3, hotkey upgrade, NET 4, upgrade of power management before you install the dial-up connection.  Now, when I boot the message I get is that ThinkVantage Access Connections will not work on this system.

  Y at - it somewhere that I can d/l the original supplied with this laptop for connections, files card WiFi and Ethernet card?  The latest just will not work.

  Well, it's now a moot point.  Windows was all simply too altered by me and required a reinstall.  I just did.

  You may need to enter in C > drivers > win > Hotkey and run the Setup file from there.

• new hard drive G41, factory restored, now stuck to always start at R & R

  G41 2886-79U with XP Pro.  Hard drive died last year, still under warranty then took to an IBM service center.  They have replaced the hard drive under warranty and gave me a set of R & R and product recovery CD.  Laptop computer R & RL ran OK for about a month.  He started to be right about the time when my warranty has expired, becoming slow example, 45 minutes to start.  Random crashes, most often when closing programs, the error message this program could not write to the hard disk.  Frequency of accident back.

  Abandoned, taken from the hard drive to install a new hard drive.  [Hmmmm, I notice that they in fact did not replace my original with a new drive, this drive warranty-replaced has a sticker saying "Good used State party"].

  Installed the new HD, started using the CD R & R, then followed the six guests R & R factory restore since the product recovery CD.  After the sixth disc, message box saying it needs to restart the PC, you click Yes or no.  There is no direction to remove the CD from the drive, at this point.

  It restarts at the R & R window, with the popup of restore factory warning that the product recovery program is only for the unrecoverable system problems.  This looks at where we started the process of factory restore, there are seven CDs.  Choices here are OK, Cancel, or help.  Clicking OK brings you back at the beginning of the factory restore procedure.  Cancel on your vacuum on the main R & R screen. By clicking on restart here restarts once again to the screen of Rescue and Recovery.

  Now the G41 is stuck, still boots to R R & does not start in XP.

  I pulled the HD and installed temporarily in another PC that has a floppy drive, this allowed me to start with Partition Magic.

  R & R 3 partitions on the new disk as follows:

  1. the label is IBMPSP, Type FAT32, size = 406 MB, used (s) = 290,4 Mb, status = None, Pri/Log = primary.

  2 no label, Type unallocated =, size = Mo 71738,8, used (s) = 0.0 MB, status = None, Pri/Log = primary.

  3 no label, Type unallocated =, size = Mo 4171,3, used (s) = 0.0 MB, status = Active, Pri/Log = primary.

  On this PC, I let him try to boot from the hard drive and got the message "Missing Operating System".

  I put it in the G41, it starts at IBM Rescue and Recovery as before.

  I've searched the web and this forum looking for this same issue, have not found something exactly like this.

  If anybody out there knows how to get a new HD to market, let me know.

  Thank you, Don.  I found the idea on another forum of Lenovo.  So far things are working OK.  The other hard drive will be float-tested as soon as I do not know there is nothing on it that I still need.

  As the professor said, it's just not intuitively obvious to the casual observer.

  A note, when the PC was bought, it came with Norton Antivirus installed, long expired.  After the factory restore, the Nortonware registered with the site of Norton and apparently it has been recognized as a new installation and got the last update.

  I type above G41, 3.33 Ghz. It doesn't have a floppy drive. Can it be installed WITHOUT removing the graphics card from Nvidia?

  No, but you can use a USB floppy drive.

  G4X series have no "exchangeable" readers like most other ThinkPads don't.

• G41 display Dim at the start

  My G41 suddenly seems to start with a black screen... when I try to see the BIOS settings, I see that there is impression, but it is so dark that you can't read.  I don't see the controls to set up an external monitor.  The IBM logo flashes during start up, but then the screen will Dim.  It was not preceded by a pink screen; It was very sudden.

  The model number is 93ü-2886.  Any ideas on approaches?  Thank you!

  Moderate market of today, LCD is a low-cost solution because I'm dead certain to find for less than $50 delivered...

• G41 product recovery does not

  My hard drive died.  Got a new and put it in the computer.  Used an old 98 boot fdisk and format the new disk drive with space 40 concerts and has not used the fashion big block.

  I have the Rescue and Recovery CD P/N 19R9174 and the recovery of product (6) P/N 39 K CD 7220.  I have those traveled according to the instructions on the screen.  All charges.

  But when I start it, it just keeps going back to the IBM Rescue and Recovery screen.  It does not start in Windows.  I looked at the C: drive and there is no Windows directory.

  Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong.  Please guide me so that I can get XP back running.

  Hey Carl, maybe ConnectDon can explain it better than me.  Follow the links in this post.  It is possible to restart to R & R there is stuff going on behind the scenes requiring a wait at this R & R screen for awhile before things.  It may seem as if it was just sitting there...

• SSD in the G41

  All updated a series of 2886 G41 laptop with a SSD hard drive.  I consider it as my personal favorite machine is still smoking with 3.06Gig.  It is even possible the Kingston States model that the system should be at less than 4 years or less and my system is about 6-7 years of age.

  You need a PATA SSD and it will work fine. SLC is generally preferred to the MLC for the loading of the operating system, so you are looking at some serious dollars here, but you will really feel the difference.

  Keep one thing in mind, however: the rate on G41 (all all pre - T61 ThinkPad) speed will probably be the bottleneck and the chances of getting the SSD to perform 100% are slim to none.

  Suppose you wanted a single document of yours in Garamound and another in Times New Roman. So, how are you? Allows to answer this and I think that would help. If not you can always ask for more help.

  If you want to print anything in Times New Roman, just to change font of Times New Roman and use print options page to print.

  Now, how change the police page?
  It turns out that pages provide their fonts in firefox even if you select Times New Roman, always page fonts as he wants. But fortunately we can override this default behavior. Here's how?

  • FX menu go to options.
  • In options, select content.
  • Then click on advanced.
  • In advanced, uncheck the allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selection.
  • Click Ok
  • Now in the previous page, click the default font (Garamound, arial etc.) and click Ok.

  You will display the user interface of the pages changed and now you can print the pages in your favorite font.

  It will be useful.

  I guess you mean not Mozilla Thunderbird. Mozilla Application Suite is a much older than Firefox 3.6.28 discontinuous product (the latest version is dated April 21, 2006).

• IBM travelstar external USB compatibility with Portege 3480CT

  Hello
  I try to use an IBM & reg travelstar in a box external usb with my Portege 3480CT running Windows 2000 (with sp4). While the disc is recognized as plug-and-play on other computers running win2k and winXP, is not recognized on my Portege, which gives an error message suggests that the drivers are missing.

  According to IBM/hitachi (which make the player), no drivers are needed and the drive should work as plug-and-play, recognized as a generic USB HDD. This happens all other computers I've tried.

  Are their compatibility problems with this drive? Or are their special all the drivers necessary to recognize this configuration on the Portege?

  Hello

  AFAIK there is no driver required for external hard drives and they are recognized as plug-and-play. Your Portege is an old unit and there may be a problem with the USB ports. Have you checked the other USB devices?

  It is also possible that there is not enough power, and in this case, it is recommended to connect the drive using USB hub with own power supply.
