  I have an iBook Clamshell (M2453 PC, 300 MHz) and I just replaced the old 6 GB hard drive with a new hard drive 60 GB. The new drive is a regular 2.5 "IDE/PATA drive. I don't know the brand or the rpm of the road, because the seller provides various brands/rpm and I didn't check before installing.   If disk utility is not able to detect the hard drive, it could indicate a problem with the drive, the hard drive cable or control circuits in the computer. Disk utility should see at least the reader as such, even if a volume is not displayed.

  As a first step, if you have access to a proper record of the Mac OS (9.x), you can test the configuration of disk utility instead (just to see if the hard drive can be detected at all). Also, disk utility on a PowerPC (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ) to a proper Ubuntu CD version could possibly used for similar drive information research and test operations on your computer.
