  I am considering switching to iCloud photo library for the first time - mainly so I'll be able to use the new functionality of memories in iOS 10.   Where are you seeing duplicates?  In your library of Photos on your Mac?  What part of iCloud have you activated: iCloud drive or the library to iCloud?

  I recently upgraded to an iMac 27 "new and I want to spend all my photos my old computer.  My old system was a Mac Mini that I never used iCloud on because the internal drive was small so I stored all my pictures on an external hard drive.  A majority of these photos were taken with my digital camera.  I know that you only have 5 GB of space free iCloud and my photos are much more than that.

  How can I keep my photos on my computer without them going to iCloud?  I use iCloud for pictures taken with my iPhone and my iPad so I don't want to disable this feature.

  Go on your Mac in Photos > Preferences > iCloud. There you can "download for Mac originals" where they will be offline. I hope this helps!

Enabling iCloud library would give us this ability?   All valid questions and points you present!  iCloud is not designed as a platform for storage on traditional cloud for backups.  If you are looking at that, and I highly recommend do you, after some preliminary research, then you should consider these options for third party such as Dropbox, Flickr and my personal favorite Google Photos.

  iCloud is designed so that all your pictures/videos are synchronized and accessible on all your devices.

  To disable iCloud photo library for a device unique iOS, go to settings > iCloud > Photos and disable the iCloud photo library.

  On the iPhone, it must either:

  • be in use (not necessarily in the Photos app)
  • or be in mode 'sleep', plugged in and connected to wifi

  On mac, you must have the application open and the mac for not being in mode 'sleep'. OS X Powernap Feature does not support the iCloud photo library (I've done a request for comments)

  When you import pictures to Photos on your Mac and they download to iCloud photo library they will be optimized on your Mac if space is needed - you cannot control what is optimized or when - it is dynamic and automatic

  Try the settings/iCloud and remove the synchronization. Wait a few minutes and then resynchronize.
