I am running Windows 7 Pro with service pack 1 and all the icons on the desktop Start Menu has changed into something that resembles a dat file and when you click on it, they are trying to run a download would be and asks where I want to save them. Symantec Endpoint, Microsoft Security Essentials, or AVG will find viruses or problems with the computer. I spoke with the technology of Windows and he sent me the link to this page.
I've never seen anything like this.Hello
It can be disappointing when all the icons on the desktop and Menu start modified in a dat file. I understand the inconvenience.
You can try to rebuild the icon cache and check if it works properly.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and write in the box search folders options.
b. now, click on Folder Options to open and select folders and hidden files (dot).
c. open a Windows Explorer window.
d. go to C:\Users\(User Name) \AppData\Local
e. right click on IconCache.db and click on delete.
f. click Yes to confirm the deletion.
NOTE: This deletes the file to the trash. It is safe to empty the trash when you are done.
g. close the window.
h. emptying the trash.
i. restart the computer.
j. When you come back, you will notice the size of the file IconCache.db is reduced, and the update is now the current date.
NOTE: If for some reason, IconCache.db isn't there or the size has not changed, then you can just restart the computer again. You may need to restart a few times in some cases.
k. icon cache will be rebuilt.Hope it solves the problem. For any other corresponding Windows help, do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help you.

a. press the keyboard Windows logo key combination + R to bring up the Run dialog box.
b. type cmd and press ENTER to open the command prompt window.
c. in the command prompt window, type the following commands pressing ENTER after each line:
Taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
attrib-h "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db.
del "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db.
Explorer.exed. this restart Windows Explorer and rebuild the cache icons as needed.
Step 2:
Test the issue in a new user account.

Hello
You did changes to the computer before the show?
Method 1
I suggest you try the steps from the following link:When you run an .exe on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7 computer file, the file may start another program
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/950505Note: this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article: back up the registry in Windows 7
Method 2
The issue could be due to the virus on the computer. I suggest you run virus scanner online by using the Microsoft safety scanner.Microsoft safety scanner

when you do an antivirus online, you will lose data that are affected by the virus. Microsoft is not responsible for the loss of this data. -

Hello
Have you used the utility changes or registry to remove the shortcut arrow overlay?
First make sure the utility is uninstalled and the registry change is removed.
Try this and check if that helps:
1. right click on a box empty desktop and select Customize.
2. click on adjust the resolution of the screen.
3. in the drop-down color menu, select medium (16 bit).
4. click on apply.
5. when Windows you asked if you want to keep these settings, click No to restore your 32-bit color depth.
6. restart your computer.
See also the mentioned thread link below for workaround for this problem:
