Impossible to force mount a LUN/VMFS

Hello

I have a strange problem. I try to test a storage failure DR plan.

I have a cluster vSphere 5.1 with VMFS data warehouses stored on a storage EMC (VNX5100) Bay (1117900). Some of these data stores are replicated to a second array with the tool table of replication (MirrorView/S)

I tried this case: stop IO with the first table (lun, the storage group deletion) with engine on virtual machine (with disk i/o traffic generated with a single copy of the file in Windows Explorer).

After that, I stopped all the virtual machines that were stored in the deleted data store and start a new analysis all LUNs. Data store disappear from vSphere Client and VMS are marked as inactive.

I removed the lost permanent device entries and reboot both nodes.

I promoted the LUN in the second table, and I add the first cluster of nodes in the storage group.

I started a new analysis all LUNS and devices are properly listed and mounted but not the VMFS volume.

When I use this command: esxcli - vcenterserver - Server vihost node1 passthroughauth - list of instant vmfs storage

51befee9-f600f51d-9948-90b11c3bb4e2

Volume name: DATASTORE01

VMFS UUID: 51befee9-f600f51d-9948-90b11c3bb4e2

Can mount: true

Reason of mountability-United Nations:

Can will: true

Reason for non-resignaturability:

County of measure pending: 1

I try a lot of things, but the data store is detected as a snapshot.

I tried this: KB VMware: vSphere management LUNS identified as LUN snapshot

but by adding the data store (using the existing Signature keep) do not reach the VMFS volume. Another strange things: the name of the data store is not detected by the wizard.

No idea why?

Have you tried to go up the data store by using the command line again? Error messages?

    Hello.

I look for ways force mount the PowerCLI data store.
and I found the following thread.

PowerShell ResolveMultipleUnresolvedVmfsVolumes (equivalent of esxcfg - volume.pl)

This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
But what is this script provide a constantly mounted?
Need corresponds to the option "esxcfg-volume - M". '-m' option is not.

    Thank you

I don't think that you can explicitly specify a persistent mount in the call to ResolveMultipleUnresolvedVmfsVolumes.

You can check the persistence like this

    ....
    $Result = $vmHostSS.ResolveMultipleUnresolvedVmfsVolumes ($HUVRSarray)
    $Result | Select @{N = "Name"; E = {$_.vmfs.} Name}},@{N="persistent '; {E = {$_.vmfs.forceMountedInfo.persist}}

  • How to add a LUN VMFS format without formatting? in vSphere 5.1

Hi people, we need to mount a store of data that was previously seconded.

Is it supposed to be an option called: EnableResignature or > DisallowSnapshotLun but is not present in vSphere 5.1.

Can someone has a workaround for this? We just need to set up a data store without formatting!

We use vSphere 5.1 Ent.Plus Lic.

    Help, please!

    Concerning

You can always re - mount an individual to a host data store if he is always aware that the data store was just disassembled.

Options EnableResignature or DisallowSnapshotLun is relevant only if you present a new LUN with the VMFS volume to a host that already has a volume mounted by the same UUID of VMFS (for example a volume snapshot of SAN-side).

Since few releases ESXi, you don't even have to set the options manually beforehand. It comes when you add the data store in the vSphere Client will ask you what to do, whether it is the will of the volume. Will simply means just assign another name VMFS UUID and the data store, that's all.

He does not reformat the LUN. So that you can move forward, then up the LUN.

  • 30-50 VM per lun VMFS?

    Hello

Anyone who succeeds with setting of 30-50 virtual machine (single VMDK) on VMFS LUNs (without VAAI)? If Yes, could you please share load IO (IO how) what you do for those LUNs?

I also heard that with VAAI you can deploy successfully on 100VM by datastore vmfs without booking scsi problem.

Right now we use NFS which does not have this issue, we look at the use in some moment iSCSI, but due to the very large amount of VM that would be placed on a LUN (preferably 50 +) may not cause serious problems to lower our management of potential problems...

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice on this issue.

    Marek

SCSI reservation has been improved in 4.1, also without VAAI.

But I never tried to 50 virtual machines on one of the LUNS (I only try approximately 30 VMs without major problems).

  • Virtual machines with VMFS and LUN VMFS-no?

Is it possible to attend the ESX3.5 VMFS and Non-VMFS LUNs virtual machines simultaneously?  We are totally an environment totally VMFS/Fiber Channel VI with Windows o/s.   Although we have all our virtual machines that reside on a VMFS LUNS storage has asked if it is possible to have Non-VMFS LUNS presentable at our VM and VMFS?

I think I remembered that Non-VMFS storage can be made available as storage but do not know if the two can be presented at the same time

It can be done with a RDM and no special software required.

  • Impossible to automatically mount network without password readers

    Hello

First of all, I use MacOS Sierra, but I don't think that there is a forum for this yet.

I have a mini mac which auto powers walk every day and basically sits there backing up files from multiple sources.

One thing I need to do is to automatically mount a few files on my NAS.

    So far I have tried:

    • Use the Finder to use go-> connect to server, entering the mount point (tried with and without identification information in the path), ensuring that, when the dialog box that appears, I select the option to save the credentials in my keychain, then take this shortcut on the desktop and dragging it in my list of connection
    • With the help of Automator
    • Using AppleScript
    • Ensuring that all applications can use these passwords in the keychain without asking confirmation

All these work the drive is mounted, but regardless of whether the name of user and password in the connection string or not and ensure that registration is set to password in the keychain, each time, I get a pop up asking for the name of user and password. It's always busy and all I have to do is click on the connect button, but it does not help on an unattended computer restarts every day.

I was unable to get Apple script, click on the button to connect.

Someone else you have this problem, or even better a solution?

    Thank you

  • How to add a LUN replicated to vCenter for test of recovery after disaster?

We are currently on version 5.1 of ESXi and vCenter.  We have a DR test to come to one of our applications that includes about 12 VMs.  My question is, when he introduced the LUNS replicated to our Dominican Republic / Test environment vSphere on our DR site, should we choose to will Lun?  I thought I had read somewhere that for all hosts in a cluster VMware can see the LUN, it must be resigned, rather than simply mount the LUNS without resignaturing, which I believe cannot be presented to a host then do it this way.  I just wanted to confirm whether or not it is correct.

Also, if will be resignaturing LUN, we must manually update the references for each virtual machines vmdk files, or which is done automatically?

When making a DR test previously and just pick up the LUN and not at will, the logic unit number was visible as a single host that is located in a three-node cluster.

    Thank you

What will happen when you present a LUN to a host depends on whether the host saw the signature before, i.e. the LUN was mounted previously and was not dismantled/detached correctly. In the case of a known signature, the LUN will be considered to be a 'snapshot LUN' and it is necessary to will it to make it appear like a new LUN on the host, or you will have to manually force mount the LUNS. By resignaturing the LUN to one of the hosts, it will be recognized by all other guests too. Editing should be done separately on each host. For more information, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387.

You can also take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004605 to find out how properly remove/detach a unit logic of a host number, so that should not keep the signature.

  • 2 ESXi hosts... Nor can see each stores data to other hosts

    All, morning

I have a little problem with a cluster of 2 servers ESXi 4.1.  They are connected to a VC and Enterprise Plus license.

We have about 15 stores of data, called san01, san02,... san15.  ESXi hosts, we'll call it ESXi-01 an ESXi-02.  As I said - they are in an active HA with DRS cluster.  They are part of a disaster recovery test, we are performing.  For some reason, only the host on which each data store has been added (add storage, select LUNS, use the existing signature) can use this store.  It does not appear when a new analysis VMFS on another host (or automatically as it should).  If you try to import the same LUN to host opposed when it is already mapped to the one, the only available option is to reformat the partition, which is not good as there are a several machines on each Lun.

So now I have a host with san2, 3, 5, 7 & 9 and all the others are on the other host.  Of course, they are unable to balance the load using vMotion & DRS.  It makes me crazy - any suggestions please?

Just FYI, the hosts are the IBM HS22 blade, cards QLogic FC and the SAN is a unit of IBM XIV.  In our main site (live), we have a XIV with all LUNS alive and running on a cluster of 12 ESX4 host.  The data is replicated on the XIV in our disaster recovery site using the iSCSI Protocol and the links were broken between the 2 sites at the beginning of the excersise, allowing data replicated to our Dr site must be set to read/write and connected to hosts via FC.  Both hosts use the same configuration as the other and have the same drive mappings to the SAN.

Look forward to hearing your ideas!

    Dave.

As I understand it, the issue could be caused by the LUNS being recognized as LUN snapshot (see the ESXi host logs)

In this case, you could try to force mount the LUNS. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387

  • Material level of VMware vmfs LUNs 4 through 7, issue.

    Hello

We are currently using esx 4.0 and virtual material all our vm are at version 4. I need to upgrade to version 7 to take advantage of the new api of storage etc.

My question is, when I've upgrade to version 7 will change the backend disk array vmfs config anyway. Sounds silly and I'm pretty sure that the answer is no. However my production servers and test servers are on the same Lun, so I don't want to upgrade a test version 7 virtual machine and then discover he did change for my LUN vmfs my vm production is also on.

    Thank you

    Craig

You are right. There is no change in anything other than the VM. No change to VMFS...

  • VMFS cloning

    HI -.

I'm looking for in a system having 2 groups, one for production and the other for the non-prod - resident both in a single data center.

IM wondering what the consequences are for cloning (at the level of the array) (containing Windows VMS) production VMFS volumes and which has cloned LUNS VMFS UN-produced groups presenting and by adding virtual machines in the UN-produced inventory. There are also a couple of virtual machines (Cluster SQL) with ROW - and I would like to take the same approach with the latter.

Of course, there will be problems in the guests with SIDS in double etc... but I can isolate the VMs Prod to talk with Non-Prod VMs at the network level - so im not too worried about that aspect. However to the ESX level im not so confident, anyone have any suggestions of probable and solutions questions? (things that come to mind are LUN Resignaturing and MAC and UUID of duplicates...)

    Pointers are welcome...

    Thank you

PS. It's using a CF HP EVA Array.

Table according to cloning, that's what we use to type DR scenarios.  It will work fine.  The will or forced mount options may be necessary after you present the LUN being replicated to your cluster nonprod.  This is because the ESX may or may not display the LUNS added as snapshot LUN.  More probably, it will happen, because signature VMFS will not match what the ESX Server would have added himself.  This is a pretty easy thing to overcome, by using strength will mount options.

Since you are under the same vCenter, the duplicate UUID/MAC will recognize and vCenter will ask you if you want to replace the UUID.  Say Yes here, and you should be good to go as well.  Network cards, I can't say 100%, vCenter may change these, but I have not tried this scenario with ESX servers connected to the same vCenter.  If it isn't, then remove the card NETWORK and adding a NETWORK card will take care of this issue for sure.

Other than that, the SID will be your OS level issue.  NewSid or sysprep is required, if the servers are added to the same domain as the servers of prod.  If they aren't, then there no problem there either.

  • Add vmfs 5.54 to ESXi 5.5u3 artifact.

    Hello.

I have ESXi 5.0 GA (469512) and 3 LUNS mapped to clariion cx4-120. All LUNS VMFS 5.54 partitioned by that host (I assume that LUN have been partitioned exactly this host because no ESXi host had access to these LUNS previously).

Recently, these LUNS have been mapped to 3 5.5u3 ESXi hosts. But these new hosts can see only 2 volumes VMFS, not 3d, but 3d LUN is accessible to guests 5.5 and I cannot add new data store by formatting this LUN.

Can someone tell me what is the problem?

    • To turn up the volume without making a this volume resignaturing (this volume is mounted when the ESX host is restarted), run this command:

    # esxcfg - volume - M VMFS_UUID | label

    For example:

    # esxcfg - volume - M "VMFS_1".
    # esxcfg - volume - M '49d22e2e-996a0dea-b555-001f2960aed8.

so wholesale in the KB, if you command - M esxcfg-volume, this will make the VMFS volumes persistent editing without resignaturing.

  • Target iscsi ESXI 5.0, active path connected, mounted, are not not in the data store data store

    HI -.

I am looking for help to point me in the right direction.  This problem occurred after a reboot of the system.

    I'm in vmware esxi essentials 5.0.0 821926

I use the starwind software as my iSCSI target

I use ISCSI to connect to my server from storage to the esxi hosts.

I have 2 warehouses of data showing inactive under clusters of data storage and the data store.  I have a third-party data store on the same server that is loading properly.

I currently have the same behavior on three esxi hosts:

under configuration - storage adapters is the ISCSI path is active. Data warehouses appear under devices and mounted.  In data warehouses, they are inactive. On the same storage server

on the starwind Server - I have

    built a new target

removed and added the databases to the new target

Changed the IP address of the target.

On Esxi hosts, I removed the ISCSI server, discover places BOF dynamic and static and added under the same or IPs news discovery

I can restart esxi hosts & storage servers and get to that same point.

Whenever I find myself in the same place - course assets, devices mounted, inactive in data warehouses

I don't know what else to share, let me know what you need to know to help out me.

    Thank you

OK, incase someone crosses my ramblings, it may help.  My original question was warehouses of data that would not rise.  They were visible as devices in the area of storage under devices and as devices in the scsi adapter.

When I would try to force mount them, add storage, keep the signature, mount they wouldn't mount.  I did some research and my question was after a failed mount attempt strength as got data attached as snapshots warehouses.  I then mounted force them and he tells will data warehouses and I got them back.

I followed this KB to identify and resolve the problem

manipulation of vSphere detected as snapshot LUN LUN (1011387)

    When it was over, I tried to add vms back and found a new show.  Power of vms would expire.  the vmkernel.log showed;

I had latency huge read write showing upwards, 3K and more

After several searches, I had in the ESXShell and found that there is no conflict of booking.

On a whim, I took inventory all virtual machines that are now inaccessible.  I then added a DOS virtual machine. Alto! the latency down to version 1.2 a.7 ms for all data warehouses.

ultimately the instructions said you may need to add virtual machines in the inventory, but does not remove all virtual machines first.  I was grabbing vms that were not in stock, so I didn't remove the old virtual machines in the inventory.

  • Repair / recover VMFS Volume

I have a situation where someone had vSphere 4.x older glomerulus. Virtual machines have been welcomed to a rheostat of SAN iSCSI for the nodes in the cluster.  Volume was initially 260 GB when I did a few years ago.   Later, they added enough VMs they needed to expand.  They have developed the ability of LUN to 3 TB, but has never been able to extend the partition.   It's a problem with VMFS3.

Seems if you epand the LUN, EVEN IF you NEVER develop the score, your systems, if they disassemble the volume can never stand again.

These are apparently for some time where over time systems more wouldn't have 'access' on MON... and after a power outage, no system could then access dozens of virtual machines.

Now I need to find a way to mount this 3 TB iSCSI LUN, even if read-only long enough to mount the virtual machines off of it to the NFS share 260 I ready.

Goal: map iSCSI LUNS on Windows / Linux system.  Turn up the volume of RO.  Copy NFS export data. Destroy and rebuild the data on the new lun VMFS5 iSCI.

I can mount the LUNS to the CENTOS system and parted shows the 3 TB LUN but only 260 GB primary partition.  So, I see the data as expected.   "Now, I tried to compile ' vmfs-tools - 0.2.5 ', but the compiler errors.  Nothing of any help or comments. I've tried ubuntu and CENTOS48 too and mistakes not much help.

Is their path another, simpler to get this accomplished?

    Thank you

If ESXi cannot see content any volumes VMFS - try Linux vmfs-tools - he often sees more.
Try the LiveCD I do - there last vmfs-tools batim.

    1. you have good reasons to assume that the flat.vmdk was written in a single fragment
    2. the vmdk was thick provsioned (greedy zero works best)
    3. you can provide specific details on the structure of the disc of the lost flat.vmdk
