In AppAssure 5.4.2 Exchange backups

Hi all

I know that this will be one of these stupid questions, but I can't understand it.

My server AppAssure 5.4.2 is not recognizing our Exchange Server as being an Exchange Server.

Does anyone know who I can have forgotten to do?

Concerning

Jason

It was a free report with our Exchange Server. We could not connect to the ECP for some reason any. Restart the Excahnge server solved the problem of the ECP and fixed the problem of AppAssure. Thanks for your comments guys.

BTW, this is Exchange 2013 CU5

  • VCB & Exchange backups

Hi, we're building a mailbox exchange server 2010 in a VSphere cluster. The server will host approximately 3200 mailboxes, each 2 GB, spread over 7 DB.

Each of these DB will be on his own logic (on a HP EVA6400) unit number, ranging from the CT 1.1 to 1.7 TB.

If we perform a backup VCB on this server that my understanding is that the server is in snapshot mode and meanwhile an extra space will be needed on each unit number logic for any changes made to the disks and I'll try to find an estimate for the additional space to allocate-does anyone have a rough idea of the level of congestion or tips on how to calculate this?

With snapshots, the amount of space required would be based on the estimated amount data written during the time of expected for FullVM backup copy.

HOWEVER... It is NOT a good idea to backup with VCB transactional systems. VSS providers and sync drivers do not play nice with SQL or Exchange. Usually, I recommend using it to only backup system using an agent for transactional/mail/base backup of data.

  • Snapshot with Exchange 2007 and AD backups?

    Hi all

I was wondering if best practices in ESX4 changed regarding snapshots for backups go. Is still a bad idea to take a snapshot of your Exchange and AD server? As I know that in the last restore from a snapshot in a situation of failure total was not recommended for AD or Exchange. This changed at all or anyone has tested this more in detail?

Also as far as backups go it is always advisable to make an announcement file level backup and exchange with your agent of backup software (IE. Backup Exec Agent 12.5 Exchange / AD agent, ect)

A lot depends on how you have the Exchange Setup program.  You have your database and logs on the VMDK files?  RDM?  All these things will make a difference on how you protect the virtual machine.  In my view, there is no size unique all the backup strategy for virtual machines and applications, so it depends on what your environment looks like.

I have the environments that use snapshots and vRanger to connect to VMS Exchange backup.  But the restore strategy depends on what actually happens to know which method is used for the restore.

  • Backup DR with vRanger connection devices

Having Dr. devices dealing with VM backups on-site, but one of the questions that arise is the time of the backup. It takes about 8 hours to backup the SQL files every night. Just to let you know its all upwards in a virtual machine environment.

Can incorporating vRanger of connection or AppAssure with DR unit affect backup performance?

Is there a whitepaper on this?

    Thank you!

    Hi Geeka,
Depending on how you are currently using the device DR with vRanger connection, your current solution could be improved.

If you are simply using the DR as a CIFS share there is another way.

vRanger connection also supports the Dell RDA technology, which can provide a level of deduplication side source.

Consider implementing vRanger connection Virtual appliances (one per host), or one per cluster, your choice, the virtual devices include technology of the GDR.

Configure the virtual machine backups to cross Virtual Appliances and target (GDR/RDS) container on the Dominican Republic.

The backup will be a snapshot of the virtual machine, but use hot add technology to fix the disks to the virtual appliance, data are then broadcast through the virtual appliance to the GDR DR container. At the point where the data leaves the appliance virtual it's pattern matched with data stored on the Dominican Republic. All blocks that match are not sent.

This reduces network traffic and allows backups to do more.

If you want to add the technology to the protection of SQL as an agent-based application, then take a look at NetVault Backup, it will be directly interfacing with SQL via VDI or VSS, providing full, incremental and differential backups. It's agents also include the GDR technology and can provide source de-duplication to a DR GDR container.

AppAssure also has an agent and can protect the content of the full virtual machine, including the SQL instance, but it will require its own server and storage and does not directly allow the DR unit to store the initial backup data. It can create Archives of data sets that can be moved from AppAssure on the good DR database server, but it's more for long-term storage.

    I hope this helps.

    See you soon,.
    Adrian.

  • Installation of POS 6 Exchange 2013 plugin - current user is not a domain administrator

I installed Exchange SP1 2013 (current patch level).  I'm tying to install the plug-in by vmware-data-protection-administration-guide-60.pdf, Exchange age 169.  VMware VDP Exchange Backup tool for configuring the user start and tells me "the current user is not a domain administrator" (see screenshot).  I am connected to the machine using credentials a domain administrator, not the local computer.  The Exchange sever, Storage group, Mailbox store drop-down lists are empty, apparently a problem of authority.

The talks on creating a VDPBackupUser account manually KB creating a VMware vSphere backup user account Data Protection (WTP) Exchange plugin with Advanced VDP (2073168).  Before I trot in this way, I thought I'd see if there is anything obvious or that I ran out of base.

Problem solved.  Setup VMware VDP backup user tool must be "Run as administrator...". "I must have missed that in the doc

In addition, notes in the log (the configuration tool dialog box) that the created account VMwareVDPBackUser (mailbox) must be connected to (at least once) to complete the configuration.  I use OWA to open a session.

The VMware install document talks about the user VDPBackupUser.  The user created by this process is VMwareVDPBackupUser.

  • AppAssure best practices for the storage of machine image

I work in a regulated environment where our machines are validated before being put into service.  Once they are put in service, changes to the machines are controlled and executed by a process of change request.  We use AppAssure to back up critical computers and with the ' always on ' incremental backup, works very well for the restoration of level file/folder in the case where something is removed, moved, etc..

Management process asks me to perform once a machine is validated, to take a picture of it and store the image further so that if there is a hardware failure, the validated image can be restored and the machine is essentially to it of original validated state.  In addition to having the image of the machine as soon as it is posted, I need to also back up the machine on a regular basis in order to restore files, folders, databases, etc. on this machine.

So my question is how to achieve this with AppAssure?  My first thoughts are to perform the backup of the machine Base, then archive it, and then let the AppAssure to perform the scheduled backup.  If I need to restore the computer to the Base image, then I back the Archive and then do the restore.  Is this a feasible solution and practice?  If this isn't the case, please tell us the best way I could accomplish what I want to do.

    Thank you

    Hi ENCODuane,

You can carry out the plan of action of the WES in the following way

    1. to protect the agent with the name "[Hostname\IP_Base]".

    2. take the base image.

3 remove the protection agent, but let the recovery points

    4. After these steps, you will have recovery basis point for the agent in the section 'recovery only Points.

    5. go to the agent computer, open the registry and change the ID of the Agent (a sign of evolution will be enough).  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AppRecovery\Agent\AgentId\Id

    for example, of

    94887f95-f7ee-42eb-AC06-777d9dd8073f

    TO

    84887f95-f7ee-42eb-AC06-777d9dd8073f

    6. restart the agent service

    7. from this point core Dell-AppAssure will recognize machine as a different agent.

8 protect the machine with the name "[Hostname\IP]".

If after these steps, you'll Base image for the 'Recovery only Points' machine (with the name "[Hostname\IP_Base]" which will not be changed by the update rollup and transfers) and protected the machine with the name "[Hostname\IP]" where the transfers will be made based on configured policy.

  • Dropped network speed - looking for confirmation

We were informed this morning by our backup team one of our Exchange backups took 14 hours to complete. A huge difference than the end time of 2 hours yesterday.

After reviewing the graphics performance in vCenter, it seems that our network connection between the server for the backup volume has dropped up to 100 MB only, despite the physical switch statement that it connected to 1 GB.

I just want to confirm that my eyes read this right before you start to dig deeper into it. Please see image attached. It is indeed being capped at 100 MB?

    Thanks advance.

Network usage meter displays the values in Kilobytes per second, so use of 8555 kbit/s of your image translates to 67 Mbit/s.

  • Not including use of repository space

I'm new to AppAssure (legacy) and now my backups fail due to space.  Our current facility is tight and space is at a premium.  I have a repository for AppAssure and it is located on the heart of the system on a disk (D), who is listed at 7.17 TB in size.  The repository has a data location that is this road (D).

Problem - when I look at the repository I see the name, use of space (533,17 GB free of tuberculosis 5.7), Compression (30%), deduplication (44%), etc.

When I look at the location of the data within the repository (drive D), I see the UNC path to the location (D:\MyRepository), use of space (1.07 to free or 6.14).  No Compression or Dedup.

If my system is saturated, why is it still 1.07 TB of free space and why can't I 'write' it?

    Thank you.  Russ

    Russ

In the second step, looks like you look at this from the Windows File Explorer. When you create a repository in Appassure, he must be told in advance size and this size is pre-allocated. So, if I had a D: drive which was 1 TB and I've created a repository of 800 GB, 800 GB will take place immediately on the filesystem (depending on the operating system) and this deposit will resume NEVER left more than 200 GB.

I could create a new storage location for this repository, which would include the left more 200 GB but there are a few problems with that (if the D: drive failed, it should be in all your repositories. It seems that it is a type of NAS device, so probably not a huge problem) is the only way to GROW a repository. There are steps to migrate from the repositories of larger machines, but I don't think you want to mess with that.

I could also create a new repository on the left, over 200GB, but there are also problems with that (deleting duplicates does not happen in all of the repository) and then I have to migrate one or more clients to use this new repository

The config and terminology can be a bit confusing, but a repository can have tons of places of storage / runs. For example a single repository can store data on the D:\repo, c:\temp, D:\smallrepo, w:\nas etc...

But you generally DON'T want to fail this since if one of these locations, he disassembles your repo.

I think would be best to create a new storage location using 1.07 CT which is currently free. But I do not know your environment so take that with a grain of salt.

In the Basic Console click your current repository

Select the drop-down arrow on the pinion (right of the screen)

    Select Add storage location

If your current storage location is D:\MyRepository, you will need to create the new a D:\MyRepository1 or something. Do this but the amount of free disk space (or close) also remember this size is pré-alloué, as soon as you click to create, appassure will create a 1.07 TB disk allocation

I would like to know if this is what you see and / or if the information is useful

  • impact of the backup proxy server appassure

    Hello

I'm curious to know what kind of impact running a backup during peak hours on your servers. I was just making my feet wet with appassure, so we did turn the backup in a very traditional manner with a single backup from one day to the next.

We started trying to leave the appassure make multiple backups throughout the day and we had mixed results. Some servers seem to completely affected by running Backup and other bog down severely without any obvious reason for me (on the same workload, card etc.)

I'm nervous to run backups every few hours on busy servers, but those are the ones who benefit the most of frequent backups.

I'm curious to know what is the impact for others especially on busy servers exchange or sql.

    Thank you

    Hello ajna

Thanks for your question.  AppAssure have experience with a large number of customers who protect Exchange environments and SQL on an hourly basis and impact should not be noticeable while backups are running but there are a few caveats.  The agent itself must meet the minimum specifications required for AppAssure - http://documents.software.dell.com/appassure/5.4.3/release-notes/system-requirements/appassure-agent-software-requirements.   Memory and network requirements are of particular importance.

A Microsoft requirement for the underlying copy Service VSS (Volume Shadow) smoothly is also generally all protected disks should have at least 10% to 15% of free space and that the VSS writers on the system are healthy (this is particularly relevant for Exchange and SQL).

I hope it's to reassure however support would be happy to help you with specific questions, you can experience.

  • Exchange control of mountability 5.4 AppAssure

I'm brand new on AppAssure and I have 2 questions.

    1. I currently have the exchange Setup program to backup every hour. When I check the control of automatic mountability activate it really seems to slow down my backups as it must do every single time when it backs up. Is it possible to put up to make a control of mountability once a day?

    2. I have a DAG with 2 exchange servers. I don't think that I should have two backup servers, because they are copies of each other so I want just a server and I put a truncate the logs after the backup. This truncates the logs on both the DAG members because they share the same database? I suppose, but want to make sure.

    Thanks for any response.

    HI Dst.james,

1 because now he does not have the ability to perform control of mountability once a day (you can manually force), but one of the child of the 'work every night' employment audit of exchange databases. This work is "Checksum check work" and it runs once per day (with night work).

    2. the truncation of the log will be held on the active node and after replication (between nodes) newspapers is truncated on the passive node.

  • Backup of mailbox Exchange Enterprise 2013 with Microsoft

  • Is there an App for Exchange 2010 event entry specifying that TLogs are deleted after a successful backup?

We use the NetWorker to back up our system of Exchange 2010, once the backup is completed successfully, we expect to see a newspaper App entry indicating that the Exchange transaction logs (Tlog) are deleted (as we do with our Exchange 2007 - ESE backup system).

Although the Tlog files get deleted successfully, should there be an entry in the App events by telling us that in Exchange 2010?
