InDesign CS4 - Paragraph Style - Justification applying do not

Hello

I'm in College and Indesign is the software that we use for our projects.  The version we have is CS4.  It is the second project where I had a problem with the rationale.  I can use the justification above icons to move the text where I want to after you apply the paragraph style, but what causes the override bit + appears and which is not allowed.  My instructor says that we should use the style itself.  I am happy to do and found the area of justification in the paragraph style settings, however, any justification I specify (with the text highlighted and preview enabled), the text does not move.  I've also set it, applied, and then decided to go back to the document, just in case it was a mistake to read-only, but it doesn't always.

I have to justify everything THEN apply the paragraph style to work around this problem?  If the option of justification in the paragraph style settings does not actually move the text-this is expected end?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It is difficult to say without seeing what you have. Can you do a similar to this screenshot:

This screenshot, you can see the text that is in style with display of hidden characters (Type > show hidden characters), the Editor of history (Edit > edit in story editor), the withdrawal and spacing of the Paragraph Style Options of window tab and justification at the top of the screen buttons.

  • A paragraph style that applies to all other paragraph styles?

    Hello

    How do you add a paragraph style that applies to all other paragraph styles?

    I tried to apply my master styles desired to [standard paragraph] and then from all the other paragraph styles [standard paragraph], with styles that apply indirectly, for example title 1 is based on [standard paragraph] but section 2 is based on heading 1 and so on.

    This does not work as well as I expected.

    Is there anything else I can do?

    Much obliged!

    A rule of thumb is to leave the only standard paragraph. Otherwise you can mess up other styles based on that.

    To set up your new style - which may by default based on the standard paragraph - and formatting you wish. Then base on that other styles.

    I created a style of paragraph indented on the first line of each paragraph. In most of the books, at the start of the first line of a chapter, this line is not indented while the rest are. Is there a way to set up in InDesign CS3? Is the only way to make this work is to manually go out the tab at the start of each chapter?

  • InDesign CS4 suddenly doesn't work does not correctly

    One of my users has problems with CS4.  When she opens a document (it was created in InDesign CS4, and we used it for a while) it displays errors of link saying that it contains links to sources that are missing.  But when you try to click on the link between the tools they appear dimmed.  Also, the attributes of the document as the type and size of font so that left, right or center justification does not work.  She can enter new text, but all the old text is immutable.  Any ideas how to solve this problem?

  • Problem of numbered list in InDesign using paragraph Styles Code syntax highlighter

    Styles using GREP in the options of styles paragraph that I managed to make it useful, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, styles of syntax highlighter.

    Code can be copied and pasted, or can be typed and styles work well. codehighlighter_indesign.jpg.

    My only problem is with the numbering.

    I've implemented a character list ordered for my type of chip.

    Although the size of characters must be greater than the size of the code in order to get the character bar to connect and be a solid line.

    Is there a way to have the same size font for the numbering and the code and a bar of character which will connect? Do not be destroyed, because the separator between the numbered lines and the code?

    Also it doesn't seem to be a way to change the color or the weight of the bar (it must be the same color as the number) with a bar automatically generate? Is it possible?

    Here is an example of my InDesign CC 2015.4 German I did with a numbered list numbering and bar with a shading of paragraph:

    Note that the width of the 'bar' would change, if you change the width of the text block.

    5 mm added to the width of the text block:

    Or would disappear.

    The original text frame width less 5 mm:

    They are in fact rules of Pará? If so, drop-down menu that appears above the rule and check the parameters of the rule below the rule below.

  • Paragraph styles are not properly in automatic Table of contents

    Hi all

    I'm currently busy with the lay-out of my doctoral thesis in Indesign CS6. I did the separate files for each chapter, after that, I joined the files in a document of a book. Now, I need to create a table of contents and want to do using the Table of contents style.

    I've already customized a table style content in which I said Indesign which paragraph styles should be included in the table of contents. I also created new paragraph styles to use as entry style. When you create a table of contents the lay-out seems just perfect, except that I set the text for being "fat" in my paragraph style, but it comes in the form of 'regular' text in my table of contents. Now I can pass this "BOLD" text by selecting it and alt + shift clicking on the paragraph style in the paragraph style menu. Problem is that after updating the table of contents text back to "regular". All the other stuff that I defined in the paragraph for entry style style (e.g., tablets, the font size, leading) are applied.

    How can I solve this problem? I would appreciate your comments, because it's annoying me a lot: S.

    Thanks a lot already!

    Did you apply a character style to your topics throughout the book?

    If so, this could cause the erratic behavior that you see.

    Check your table of contents update to see if there is a character applied to the imported text style.

  • A paragraph style can be applied to paragraphs replacing?

    Is it possible to apply a paragraph style to all paragraphs in a text block?  I tried to do over the years, but have not thought about it.  I try to check the appearance of the tractor paper green-Bar - memory that seems like decades ago.

    My current project is a directory of the long staff which contains several pieces of data in lines (each line is a paragraph).  I know how to apply a paragraph style that applies at a glance 'green bar' to a paragraph.  My goal now is to understand how to apply it to other paragraphs or lines in my document.

    I ended up apply styles manually in a sort of mind-numbing trance of repeated key strokes.  Certainly not the right answer, but the work is done and my boss is happy.

    I really like to be in this state of trance. Sick, I know. Unfortunately, I discovered that I could select a bunch of text with the text tool, and then right-click on a style and choose "Apply Style, then next Style." As a result, I found myself with fewer opportunities to make 10-key style-application meditation.

  • Application of paragraph styles will not work

    I've set up a paragraph style, but it will not change the selections. It goes back to the orginal police. I get a little + sign by the style, and little matter how many times I click on it, it doesn't fit the style. I tried to make a standard paragraph in the hope to remove the style, but nothing.

    Thank you in advance.

    You must select the paragraph and then opt or Alt, click on the style name. If it only it checks to see if there are characters assigned styles.

  • Paragraph style, first line "BOLD"

    Hi all

    I try to give a column in a table definition in which the first line is "BOLD" and the rest of the cell is not, like this:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    2 3 column cell

    Name of the company
    Address

    Address

    2 4 column cell

    Name of the company
    Address

    Address

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I don't know if this is even possible, but it would be a great help.

    I apply the paragraph as follows to the second column:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    myTable.columns [1].cells.everyItem () .texts [0] .applyParagraphStyle (contentText);

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Here's the paragraph contentText:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    contentText var = myDocument.paragraphStyles.item ("contentText");

    Try

    {

    var contentTextName = contentText.name;

    }

    catch (MonErreur)

    {

    contentText = myDocument.paragraphStyles.add({name:"contentText"});)

    }

    contentText.appliedFont = "Arial";

    contentText.fontStyle = "Regular";

    contentText.pointSize = 10;

    contentText.spaceAfter = 10;

    contentText.spaceBefore = 10;

    contentText.fillColor = myDocument.colors.item ("Black");

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Is there a way to leave only the first line to be bold?

    Thanks in advance,

    Greetings

    Hello

    You can work with a line for your paragraph style style, if your lines of text are not separated by the sign of paragraph as in a good example shown here:

    If your text is composed as in the example on the left using signs of paragraph, you need a paragraph style distinct for the first paragraph with Arial Bold.

    As already noted Willi Adelberger.

    Example for adding a nested line style:

    var doc = app.documents[0];

    // Your paragraph style name that later should contain a line style:
    var paraStyleName = "contentText";
    // For defining a line style we need a character style:
    var charStyleName = "FirstLineBold";
    // All properties for the paragraph style:
    var paraStyleProperties =
    {
        name : paraStyleName ,
        appliedFont : "Arial" ,
        fontStyle : "Regular",
        pointSize : "10 pt",
        spaceAfter : "10 pt",
        spaceBefore : "10 pt",
        fillColor : "Black"
    };
    // All properties for the character style we need for the line style:
    var charStyleProperties =
    {
        name : charStyleName ,
        fontStyle : "Bold"
    }

    // Check, if the needed styles are there:

    // The paragraph style.
    // using IS NOT VALID is recommended
    if(!doc.paragraphStyles.itemByName(paraStyleName).isValid)
    {
        var paraStyle = doc.paragraphStyles.add(paraStyleProperties);
    }
    else
    {
        var paraStyle = doc.paragraphStyles.itemByName(paraStyleName);
        paraStyle.properties = paraStyleProperties;
    };

    // The character style.
    // using IS NOT VALID is recommended
    if(!doc.characterStyles.itemByName(charStyleName).isValid)
    {
        var charStyle = doc.characterStyles.add(charStyleProperties);
    }
    else
    {
        var charStyle = doc.characterStyles.itemByName(charStyleName);
        charStyle.properties = charStyleProperties;
    }

    // At this point we have a valid paragraph style and a valid character style.
    // Now let's add a line style.

    /*
        Note and warning:
        In case the paragraph style already has one or several line styles we
        have to either remove them to get our new line style at "pole position",
        because there is no move() method to bring a new line style up in the stack of line styles.

        Or we have to redefine the first line style. Which is done below.

        About removing line styles:
        Tested and is not working with CS6. Could be a bug.
        paraStyle.nestedLineStyles.everyItem().remove()
        So I think it is best to loop through and remove them one by one.

    */

    // Redefining the first line style if there is already one.
    // Else add a new one.

    // Note: Using the properties-property is not working here:

    if(paraStyle.nestedLineStyles.count()>0)
    {
        paraStyle.nestedLineStyles[0].appliedCharacterStyle = charStyle;
        paraStyle.nestedLineStyles[0].lineCount = 1;
    }
    else
    {
        paraStyle.nestedLineStyles.add({appliedCharacterStyle : charStyle , lineCount : 1});
    }

  • How clear the text paragraph styles imported from the word?

    I am trying to create a user manual and I use a model that has its own set up paragraph styles.

    I use InDesign CS6 because I use the PDF2ID of Markzware plugin that I bought for this version. I used it to bring in the instructions of the users who have made their work in Word and saved in PDF format.

    I just want to take their work and re - format to match the styles of paragraphs in the model. But when I select the text and choose a new paragraph style, it does not change.

    I tried to use the button 'Clear the replacements' but nothing happens.

    I found a site that offers to use keyboard shortcuts to clear the formatting, but they no longer work.

    What Miss me?

    PDF don't know anything about styles. The plugin could have done a few "intelligently" all styles, based on the formatting, but I don't know if he is capable of that because I've never used.

    Hold Shift + Alt\Opt click a paragraph style should apply this style and remove character styles as well as local formatting overrides.

  • Ordinals, paragraph styles, character function OpenType

    Hello

    My understanding about OpenType and ordinal is if I set the ordinal feature in a paragraph style (or select a paragraph and ordinals in the character Panel), then InDesign's smart and use only the ordinal characters where they are needed, for example in the 3rd, 5th.

    However, when I turn on the functionality of ordinals in a paragraph style and apply the style to a paragraph, almost every Word turns into a character followed by the exhibitors. I'm doing something wrong?

    Basically I want only InDesign to apply the exponent to the 3rd, 5th, etc. 1.

    This is for CS4. Thank you.

    Your understanding is incorrect. Ordinals is intended to only be applied to the selected text.

  • Importing Word documents in CS5 - matter of paragraph Style

    Hi, we import Word documents in a model of CS5, removing the Word styles brings (spend a paragraph text or body base) but the text is coming in black 100% when we have defined in InDesign that 80% and then we find that paragraph Styles will not apply properly. Does anyone else have this problem? I tried it get around by copy - paste, but it still does, especially if I copy and paste into a table.
    If you have any ideas as to what's going on would be great.

    Check the window paragraph styles to see if you have local substitutes on the text (click in and see if the name of the style has a + next to him). If so, hold the Option key (Mac OS, maybe the ALT key on Windows) and click on the style name. That will erase the replacements the. You can also do the fly of the styles window.

    If you've already tried this, check the window character styles. Character styles will change the look of the paragraph styles, but they do not trigger the replacements the + indicator, because they are not considered to be a local override. You can apply the no character style if that's what the problem is, but it will apply to the text that you selected, unlike paragraph styles, where all you have to do is click in a paragraph.
