INTERNAL SERIAL PORT (RS-232, DB-9)

I need to find a new model laptop which still has an internal serial port (RS232, DB9) for all connections of equipment we need to do.  Can someone tell me if HP still has one and which one.  We bought several units ProBook 6570 b a few months back, but they seem to not be available now.

Louis, as requested, I write back with what I discovered.  The HP ProBook 640 G1 and G1 650 ProBook equipped with a serial port internal.  I am convinced that it is useful.  I ordered actually only a unit of i7 640 G1.

I'm a fidling perfect starting with Labview, as I just started with it today, so sorry if these questions are obvious.

I will work with an Omega CN8202 thermostat. As indicated in the title of the topic, one used uses serial communication and RS-232 Protocol.  However, the LabVIEW version is 2007, so I don't think that all the drivers here would work

Only, I want to be able to set a temperature on the CN8202 of a computer and no need to do something about the ramp or soak time. How could I change the drivers so that they would work in the 2007 version of LabVIEW?

There is no such thing as LabVIEW 2007. The current version is displayed when you launch or open the About window. If it is really longer than 8.0, then the version conversion Commission. Link is at the top of the page on the set of LabVIEW.

  • Add card serial port of the Optiplex 780 desktop

I have a refurbished Dell Optiplex 780 compact desktop computer.  I would like to add an inexpensive PCI card that has two serial ports RS-232 legacy.  The description says that it is a "PCI to serial port card".  He mentions "for 5V PCI slot only."

I think the 780 will take this card, but I'm not well versed on the specifics of the new PCI standards.  This card will probably work?

    Thank you

    Jan

Typical PCI cards have one or two notches, according to voltage signalling. Cards requiring 3.3 volts have a notch 56,21 mm from the rear of the card; those requiring 5 volts have a notch 104,47 mm of the rear plate.  Universal PCI cards have two notches to allow them to be plugged into two system 5 v or 3.3 volt slots.

According to the Manual, the 780 has PCI 2.3.  PCI 2.3 supports 5 volt cards. Your slot machines are probably universal whereas they should accept a card with the notches or both. But be sure that

An important point is that the map you saw is low profile and full height. The manual said that 780 office accept "without editing card - up to two low profile cards. If you need to pay attention to the voltage more than just.

And the desktop version does not have a PCI-e x 1 slot, which means you need to find a PCI card.

Another alternative could be a USB > serial adapter cable.

  • MAX sees no serial port of the computer (RS-232)

    Hello

MAX (measures and Automation Explorer) cannot see the computer s (9-pin RS - 232) serial ports.  I'm using Labview 7.1 and Windows XP (although I think that the manufacturer has also installed Windows Vista).  When I go into control panel > system > hardware > Device Manager > Ports, I see both ports (COM1 and COM2) and both have the latest drivers on them.  Anyone know of any way to add the "Ports" sub-branch under the direction of "Devices and Interfaces" in Max Configuration tree?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

PS Labview had been stopped in the middle of editing a block diagram, a number of times before and I have reinstalled it a couple of days (without getting rid of the problem, unfortunately).  I wonder if this problem with MAX is somehow linked to the...

You could try upgrading to 4.5 or simply unistalling/reinstalling the version you have.

  • Using the Serial Port on the HP 50 g graphic calculator

    Hello world

I have another question. I want to use the Serial Port on the HP 50 g to connect with another device. The device is called the MFJ-1214PC. What it does is to accept the text and commands through a 9-pin serial Port and converts the text in a Code Morse/RTTY sound audible. It also decodes Audible the Morse Code and RTTY radio signals and displays them as text on your computer. The program that controls the MFJ-1214PC was originally written for an IBM PC for the MS-DOS operating system. The HP 50 g graphic calculator meets the system requirements for the simplest version of the program. I was wondering if there is an MS-DOS emulator written for the HP 50 g, which would allow the HP 50 g to become the computer in this case, or if the program could be rewritten and brought to the HP 50 g. If it could be rewritten, programming language what do you think would be better suited to this type of application (if it is even possible?) or UserRPL, SystemRPL or Assembly. Don't forget that I'm a complete newbie with the HP50g and have never programmed with it yet. I'll include the manual of the MFJ-1214 PC as an attachment so that you won't have to look for him. Thank you in advance for your help!

    ~ Zekelegge ~.

I understand (from my brief overview) out of the box-MFJ-1214PC, this offer box decoder output series computer.  The computer (50g in your case) will have the software to read message series and then convert that to an output for display.

BartDb gave you the right answer.

A serial cable with the correct speed level and reversing lever to manage as well as the 50G has a RS-232 signal to the outside world is the ideal solution.

However, make sure that the output of the decoder box series package can be understood by the 50 g. aud, bits, etc.   (you have the set-top box manual, so you'll have to look that up)

the streamsmart is not an aggregator of serial port.

in other words, these connectors DIN of Qty 4 on the front do not accept series rs-232 input and send then to 50 G.

I'm not an expert, streamsmart more info on these boxes is rare to find.  The probes are even more rare.

However, I know that the 4 connectors are for the analog-to-digital conversion in the probes.  The streamsmart works as a "data logger" in which he sees the input probe, the A/D converted, then sends it to the 50G (or a computer via the USB port).

In addition to the solution of Bart, there was another named Tiwag forum poster who created a serial cable and displayed a schematic representation of the cable.  This information can be found here:

    https://groups.Google.com/Forum/?fromgroups#! searchIn/comp.sys.HP48/serial$20port/comp.sys.HP48/ltcane1jSOw/uHyw2Ti03kgJ

to see an example of programming to use the serial port of 50G, you can reference the following hpcalc GPS data collection program.

    http://www.HPCalc.org/details.php?id=7105

It is written in userrpl so can be crossed with the reference of users advanced for the translation of the syntax.

It seems that the main routine of concern for the comm to the gps is in the file "GPS >.

  • USB to Serial Port Adapter

Hi, my laptop is not a serial port.

If I want to connect to some hardware using RS-232, RS-485, CANBUS etc, will I have problems using a serial USB adapter?

When I was programming PIC microcontrollers, we were told not to use adapters to program the PIC. I found this a little confusing because the signal from the adapter must be identical to what would come of a serial port. I don't know what is the reason.

Are there any known issues using a serial USB with hardware adapter (specifically the sbRIO-9651 reference carrier I use and also just in general) or I would be fine to use it?

I have a box of NI USB - 232 which will stop working.  Not sure if it's a loop of mass or something with signals through it, but... Yes, they didn't last real long in my experience.  (It was years ago, I sent a bunch of back, don't know if improvements have been made since that time.)

IOGear GUC-232 has and from SILabs CP2102/MAX3232 work well for me. never had a problem with those.  Anything FTDI is solid, beware fake chips with this manufacturer.

7Fh has a HID-UART chip available (CP2110), which works well on machines that have restricted permissions for driver installation.

  • Cannot add serial port in MAX

    Hello

I have a cRIO 9076 and you want to use the port series. I can see the cRIO able and Automation Explorer, but I'm unable to add a serial port. I get the error "Internal Error Max could not get interface to database of the MAX". A new installation does not solve the problem. Any ideas what could be the cause?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for your answers, even if they did not help. Already tried to resolve this question of the repair of a corrupted Max database before posting here, but he has not changed a thing. An other error message told me that maybe NI-VISA has not been installed on the controller, so I installed just that. What I didn't know, is that you will also install "server of NI-VISA. Could be obvious to more experienced LABView users but I'm new to this software and the large number of software components is a bit frustrating...

    Anyway, problem solved :-D

  • level of tension for the serial port sbRIO

    What are the levels of RS - 232 votage on sbRIO serial ports?  Signal levels might be: 3.3 V, ± 5 V, ± 10 V, ±12 V and ± 15 V?   ±12 v what I often see for a direct connection to the serial port of a PC.

    Hi Matthew,

The signal levels to the sbRIO-9605/06/23/26/33/36 are ±5V. I took a quick screenshot of TX W.R.T. GND. Tensions in the data sheet the standard ±5.4V (typical) loading with 3 k and a minum of ±5.0V. The RS-232 standard can accept a pretty big swing however (-3V to-25V) and (+ 3V to + 25V) for two levels of logic. The screen was shot I took with a unloadeed line so the voltage levels appear to be higher than most.

The transceiver set used is the MAX3243.

  • Visa set up serial port problem

    Hi all

I use the RS-232 port to communicate with the instrument. At the moment the device is not their so I shorted pins 2 and 3 of the connector connected to the COM2 port, so that what ever I'm transmitting, I I'll be back. Using Hyperterminal I am able to verify that whatever i write, he's coming back.

But when you use a Labview 7.1 I am tring to connect first by configuring the using VISA CONFIGURE SERIAL PORT.vi serial bus

    with the following parameters

Visa resource name = ASRL2::INSTR (port COM2 because)

    Baud rate = 2400

    Data bits = 8

    Parity = None

    Stop bits = 1.0(Equal to 10)

    Flow control = None

End of reading at the end of character = True

    Dismissal = A

Up VISA is in error. The error code is 1073807202

The procedure described above is similar in the read/write of Visa examples provided...

I strive to solve the problem but all invain.

Can anyone help me in this.

    See here

I guess your problem is #2 (you have not installed OR visa).

  • serial port read one character

    Hello

I'm new to the forum, so I don't know if I'm posting this question in the right place.

However, my problem is I'm trying to communicate via serial rs-232 port and the goal is to read and write the question (code) of the device.

The Unit regularly sends a "perpetuate" character S. When I read this character, I write the question and receive the response. Then a S appears again and I bravado the code, read the answer and so on...

The problem is that when I try to do everything at once (read S, send the code and read the answer) and it 14 times before reaching the 1st code again once, labview is very slow. (3-5 seconds to perform this tasks 14 and restart the process). I think that the program becomes slow because that way I'm not using all the S which inflamed the writing and reading process.

So, I wanted to read character by character (byte-by-byte) and then create a table with the answer. The problem is that the buffer sends answers with several bytes and I can't build an array in 'real time', beacause if I read (read VISA) only one byte, then I would be lost all the others.

I think that chains concantenate and shift registers are part of the solution, but I have too many problems until I get to the part.

So, please help me to read a single character and doesn't lose not the other bytes sent by the buffer, in order to fix the process, because I want one second per second refresh. The device emits a flow rate of 19200 baud.

    Thanks in advance

I think that if you connect the value 1, the reading serial port function, you will receive a byte, and you won't lose the rest.

The rest are stored in the buffer. If you use the previous function again, you will get the next byte.

  • Communication serial port problems

Hello.  I'm trying to control a pressure controller MKS Instruments 651 via RS - 232 c.  Right now, I just try to establish a basic communication with the device on the serial port.  I can connect to the device with hyperterminal of windows using the following parameters:

    Bits per second: 9600

    Data bits: 8

    Parity: None

    Stop bits: 1

    Flow control: no

Once I log in, I'm in file--> properties, settings tab and click the button settings ASCII.  I need to check the following boxes (not ticked by default) for communication any occurs:

Send line ends with line breaks

    The echo locally typed characters

Add line breaks to incoming line ends

Force incoming data to 7-bit ASCII

Once I got it, I can communicate with my device via hyperterminal.  What I want to do now is to use LabVIEW to control the unit, so I need to be able to send and receive data through the connection RS-232 using LabVIEW.  I have been using the basic series write and read vi, but I get no response from my camera.  Looking at the block diagram for the basic reading/writing, I saw that allow termination Char has been wired to false, so I changed to a control and set it to true.  I also changed the termination to a control tank and assign 0xD for the CR.  I can't always get a response from the device.

I guess I'm still not put in all for the serial port configuration correctly.  Can anyone give me some suggestions on what else to change to match my hyperterminal settings?  Thank you!
