Is it better to install vCenter Server 4.1 on a physical or a virtual machine?

I read somewhere that VMWare recommend install the server as a VM vCentre in version 4.1, but I'm not sure that my setup is as follows:

3 servers ESX 3.5 x, all in a cluster, currently managed by a vi 2.5 client that is on a Windows machine. I had a problem when we had to close all the ESX servers, the other day, and when I did I just leave Windows Server with the VI client to the top and race walk, (vms was shown as down) then when restarted ESX servers, I just started the mandatory VMS from there , in a few clicks. If I stopped all my ESX servers, how I restart the server virtual vCentre?

I have not updated yet, so may have missed something obvious, but I'm trying to understand it before you upgrade and this step.

Rudy,

Have a look here:

http://www.get-virtual.info/2011/02/25/script-of-the-day-find-and-start-VC-in-Dr/

I quickly gathered a script to manage your CV disaster restart.

the 3rd script in the post will include follow-up to start different services / hosts for your CV.

for example if your VC needs a separate server SQL running. . and this server needs AD currently running.

Please let me know how it goes.

I do a new install of vCenter Server 5.5 on a new Windows 2008 R2 server. The database for this facility is pointing at a 32-bit Windows 2003 SP2 server. I installed SQL Native Client 10.0 on server vCenter Server 64-bit, and then I could make my DSN ODBC 64-bit connection. The vCenter Server install could very well recognize it, but after the installation got going he wrong on the database with the following error:

Error 25003.Setup cannot create vCenter Server repository. The main reasons for this failure are:

-The database is installed using insensitive case.

-The database is remote and the client database version does not match the database version. If this problem continues to persist, see KB 1003960 for further assistance.

Well, I know that the version of the client and the version of database do not match. SQL native client on the sql server is 9.00.5000.00 and the version on the server vCenter Server is 10.50.1600.1.

I know that this version of vCenter is compatible with an installation of 32-bit sql server 2005 on a 32-bit server, 2003.

I am not familiar too if they want upgrade me sql native client on the sql server, but is not compatible with the version of sql server on this server and there are several database for other applications on this server, so I don't want to jump into something like that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • Can I install VCenter Server 5.0 on Intel i5-2400 with Win7 (x 64) machines for test?

I got a new Dell (Intel i5-2400/3.10GHz/RAM 16GB) with Win7(x64) and I want to install the VCenter Server 5.0 for the test,

but when I install on this machine, it shows that my platform is not supported the server VCenter 5.0.

Can someone tell me how can I fix it or is it possible install vcenter 5.0 in there?

    I appreciate your help!

    Hello

Surely this is not a problem with hardware, Hope it's problem with OS

I can't find VMware Comptibility matrix pdf for vsphere 5.

But does not support Windows 7 (x 64) installation VCenter 4 or 4.1.

You can check this guide for vsphere 4.1 http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf

You need, choose Server OS install 5 VCenter.

  • vCenter update manager install - vcenter server isn't compatible?

I try to install vcenter update manager.  I tried the two 4.0 update 1 and 4.0 Update 2.  Both give me an error in the first step of the installation when I specify our vcenter server, port, username, etc.  He states:

"vcenter server is incompatible with the vmware vcenter update manager that you are installing.

We run vcenter 4.1.0 (build 258902).  I can't find any information on this error.  Was hoping to find an answer here before opening a SR with vmware.

If you use vCenter 4.1, you must install VUM 4.1, which can be located on the vCenter installation CD in the folder updateManager.  VCenter is a 64-bit application, VUM is not and still requires a 32-bit DSN.

  • Migration ESXi server: install vCenter Server 2.0?

We are currently migrating to VMware Server 2.0 to ESXi 4 (local storage only execution Essentials).  At this moment we have (2) host VMware Server 2.0.  As part of our move, we will deploy a new server (host) for ESXi and need to install vCenter, so we can start (convert virtual machines, etc.).  The plan will be to move all production of VMS Server 2.0 to the new host ESXi 4 in a piecemeal fashion and then once's done it install ESXi 4 on one of the host VMware Server 2 old servers.

Because we cannot do this big bang, my question is: can we install vCenter as a VM on the server 2.0 while we are migrating to ESXi?

Once our move to ESXi is complete (end of the game, we have 2 ESXi hosts and 1 host Vmware server 2), can we then convert and move the VM vCenter to one of the new ESXi servers?   Sort of a game of shuffle, but I see no other choice and I hope it works well.  Comment on reviews would be great.  Thank you...

Why don't you just create a new virtual machine in the box of ESXi, installing vCenter, and then start the conversion of your VM from VMware Server ESXi? It is the method I would use.

In case you're not aware - you can always create virtual machines on ESXi without vCenter.

You should be able to use it in a virtual machine, as long as you have another operating system (for example Linux) host.

  • Fact vCenter Client 5.0 / vCenter Server 5.0 supports transferring files to a virtual computer?

    Hello

I got to know that VMware WS - SDK integrated 5.0 features of VIX - API to perform operations within the guest operating system.

Onyx project let us know the code for everything we do in vCenter client.

So, the question is to know if these operations are supported by vCenter Client 5.0.

Because if it is yes then we learned to know the code for these operations using onyx.

    Hello-

I think that LucD spoke how PowerCLI code be generated out of the Onyx session and has been assuming that you connected to Onyx with your vSphere client.  You can also connect to a session PowerCLI Onyx and Onyx creates the calls/code based on the same API as it would in when connect you through the vSphere client.

To connect to your session PowerCLI at Onyx, you can use a couple of parameters on Connect-VIServer. as:

Connect-VIServer localhost -Port 1545 -Protocol http

This assumes that you have launched Onyx on your local machine, and that you let him listening on the default port of 1545 (this Onyx server info is displayed in the title bar of the window of Onyx).  Note about the Protocol: it's just how Onyx works for now - it does not use https for communication between your local client (client vSphere or PowerCLI) and the Onyx service itself.  Do not too much risk, since this clear traffic is local, but something to be aware of.

    How is this, Mathieu?

  • How the Network Server 2003 Active Directory, DNS, DHCP with other virtual machines

    Hi ~

I am trying to create a network within the workstation test environment. I did research on everyday and can't find a direct answer. I want to do is use the Server 2003 functions and create my own private network with the 2 other VMS XP Active Directory domain controller. I want both of these XP machines to be able to log into the domain of the 2003 server. I have never used or learned 2003 server, that's why I do this.

What do I need to create a custom network? can I use bridged, host-only, nat? Stop the service DHCP from Vmware workstation?

What is your host operating system and how to get its IP address? What is the result of: ipconfig/all in Windows or Linux ifconfig-a?

    Disable the firewall during installation.

I don't think that the network connection is all that matters (if you care on the internet or a local area network LAN) for guests, while they are the same. I always use filled but the only thing that really counts, IMHO, is that the host, guests of the XP and W2003 prompt are all on the same subnet and the server has a static IP address.

I almost always use open for all guests. I put all the guests for static IP addresses on the same subnet as the host. I put the DNS server for XP clients to the IP address of the host to W2003. I have install the DNS role on W2003 server and then install the role of domain controller (AD), with the help of a domain name like lousdomain.local. Then you should be able to join XP guests to this area.

It's all exactly the same as if it was real machines.

My default installation is filled with the IP host is defined on 10.0.3.5, a gateway of 10.0.3.1 (my ADSL router), my server W2003 (or W2008) the 10.0.3.4 value and guests XP, the value to something like 10.0.3.6, 10.0.3.7 etc. Again, once again, is not the same as little care as long as they are on the same subnet.

What are the errors you get when you try to set up?

What you get from ipconfig/all on each of the guests?

  • A physical server with 2 NETWORK interface card using a virtual machine as IPS (transparent VM) and everything should work normally?

    Hello guys.

Is there a diagram that I made, using for my self this question.

    2067917_1.png

As you can see, I have a physical server with 2 NIC I don't want to use a VM (with Snort) as IPS / IDS system for inbound traffic on the management of VLANS. Is it possible to use this VM in this way (as an IPS/IDS, VM with two NIC without any routing work?)? Maybe you have a suggestion, how can I achieve this, as easy as possible? Maybe you have an opinion, what OS unix system do I use?

Thank you for your time and your answers. Any useful information is much appreciated.

Yes, it should work. You need to look out for, it's that the 'outgoing' NIC is not connected to the same physical switch as the entrant and that there is no link between these two physical switches, because this would create a loop of layer 2 on the network.

I haven't worked much with Linux, but I don't see that you would have a problem to find some Linux/Unix with the possibility to bridge two network cards and use some software IPS to inspect the traffic.

  • VCenter Server 6 requires 2CPU

    Hi all

I was in the process of upgrading our Vcenter Server 5.5 for Windows which is a virtual machine to the latest version of January of Vcenter Server 6.0 for Windows.

I went through the installation program and once I accepted the EULA a pop up displays "VMware vCenter Server detected 1 processor (s), 2 processors are required for the selected deployment type. It is not a choice for the type of deployment start with. Everything is installed in the same VM.

The virtual machine is already at version 10 of VM level. This means that I can't change the settings of the processor in Vsphere Client. The only choice is to change hardware parameters in the Web Client. But when the Vcenter server is down for maintenance of the web client is declining too. The only choice would be to directly connect to the ESXi server and change the parameter directly. However, I can't use the Vsphere Client.

Have I any other option to change the virtual machine hardware settings?

What exactly is the requirement, 2 CPU or 2 cores per Socket?

    Thank you

    Edy

The possibility to change the hardware version 10 virtual machines with the vSphere client was added in to vSphere 5.5 Update 2, so if you download the update client 2 5.5 you will be able to use it.

Alternatively you could use VMware Workstation to connect to the ESXi host when vCenter is out of service and modify the virtual machine, or use PowerCLI, take a look at edition vCenter VM parameters with Hardware Version 10 | Pelicano computer services

  • Can't export virtual machines: unable to connect to the remote server

    Hello

I'm working on vSphere client 5.1 (vCenter Server 5.1). Trying to export a virtual machine for distribution model. When I go to file-> export the template OVF..., I get the following error message:

Can't export virtual machines: unable to connect to the remote server

Remote not sure what/who he is not able to connect to. If I connect vSphere Web Client and navigate to the same model (or all other models), under 'All the Actions of vCenter' I don't have an option to export to the model of the FVO. But if I use a VM machine instead of a virtual machine template, I have the ability to export to the OVF, but it is grayed out.

Am I missing any customer authorization or plugin for vShpere?

Discovered that vSphere server had some modifications made by HIM to resolve the violation POODLE. HE had to set the ip address of the machine where export OVF will be performed. Which allowed the connection to establish vsphere client and perform an export of the FVO.
