Is it better to learn Oracle on Linux or Windows platform?

Hello

I am a newbie and start to learn oracle. I was wondering if it was better to start on windows or Linux? or is it still important?

Hello

It comes to learn Oracle, be it linux or Windows. I suggest you all first learn about windows for ease of use and availbility of external tools (not that they are not available for linux, but then you have to fight for their installation). Once you are comfortable, then you should use linux. Visit this link for platiform compatibility for future reference

    Hello

If you are new to Oracle then you will need to learn the installation procedures for the installation of Oracle on Linux. You can find the Installation Documents of Oracle 11 g Documentation .

Second is in Windows, you can directly connect to SQLPLUS as all parameters are automatically set by the installer.

But under linux, you will need to set the variables ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID before connecting to SQLPLUS and remember everything is based in Linux command.

Once installation is complete, then Oracle works as well as under windows. no difference that you are on sql calls so it's okay if you are connected to Windows or Linux.

You can refer to the Oracle Documentation that will explain everything in detail.

  • Oracle on Linux and Windows Client question database server: NetMgr Windows and Linux NetMgr

    People,

Hello. I have installed Oracle Database 11 g 2 server in the Oracle Linux 5 Starter PT853 Instance of database virtual machine. Then I installed Oracle Database 11 g 2 client for 32-bit Windows XP 64 - bit Windows virtual machine. Now I face the problem of connection of the VMs 2 as below:

In Manager Net Linux Server Machine:

    Service name: PT853
    Connection type: default database
    "TCP/IP Protocol".
    Host name: localhost
    Port name: 1521

    Listener: LISTENER
    Protocol: TCP/IP
    Host: localhost
    Port: 1521

I test the Service PT853 with "SYSADM" username and password "SYSADM". The connection is successful.
In the Windows XP Client computer, the information in the Net Manager is the same, but the connection is not successful. Its details are as below:

    NET Service Name: PT853
    Protocol: TCP/IP
The database Machine host name: localhost
    Port number: 1521
Name of the Basic Service: PT853
    Connection type: default database

I have test the Service using "SYSADM" UserID and password to 'SYSADM' which are the same with Linux, but this error: TNS: listener does not currently of service requested in connect descriptor.

I followed this tutorial http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_devices_serial_2vms.html to configure 2 virtual machines in Windows 7 host machine.

In Windows XP Oracle database Client Installer directory, the "tnsnames.ora" file has an entry that matches the name Service in Net Manager. Directory of database server installation Oracle Linux, the file 'tnsnames.ora' has no entry because I installed the server of Oracle database with the instance of database startup PT853.

I tried to test 2 virtual machines in the way as below:

    In Linux, [user@localhost ~] $ping WindowsXP_HostName
    Release: Unknown host WindowsXP_HostName

At the Windows XP command prompt:
    C:\ping localhost.localdomain
Its release: ping localhost 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data...
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes = 32 time = 2ms TTL = 128

He meets a few times and then disconnected by itself. It seems that Windows XP is ping itself and not Linux server. The host name of the Linux server is 'localhost' as well. It is a kind of confusion for me.

From the information above, we can see that 2 VMs cannot connect between them. Net Manager in Windows XP Oracle Client unable to connect its Service PT853 with the Oracle Linux database server.

    My question is:

Can any folk tell me how to connect Oracle Client in Windows XP with the Oracle Linux database server?

    Very grateful in advance.

IP 192.168.196.102 is Linux. This means that oracle database Client in Windows XP may log into Oracle Database Server under Linux. Don't you think I'm not mistaken? If so, I'm very happy and very grateful to you.

"Do you think I'm not mistaken?

By definition, if you can establish a connection, then you are correct.

    Hello

I've been using oracle on 64-bit windows 8 for recent years.

Is there a big difference in performance between Oracle on Oracle VS Linux on Windows?

    Kind regards

    Hussien Sharaf

    Hello

Most people will tell you that Linux is the best OS for the execution of Oracle database. In General, Windows has a bad reputation when it comes to Oracle databases running.

I worked with both platforms and from my point of view, Windows is as good as Linux in terms of performance.

Oracle supports all Windows and there is a lot of customers Oracle that works with Windows. What is more, Linux requires the DBA to have system administration skills more than Windows. Windows is simpler and easier to manage and deploy in terms of 'Skills' If you team COMPUTER lacks these skills, it will be problematic to install more advanced as RAC environments.

Google will show you that this question is common and you can find more information in the following links:

ORACLE is slower on Windows and on Linux?

    Bottom line:

    • Choose the operating system really depends on what you the company is used to work with and comfortable you and your sysadmins with each platform.
    • I think that finally, you will have to perform (repositories) stress tests yourself in order to be 100% sure that Windows can provide as good as Linux performance in order to get the confidence you need.

  • Oracle in RHEL 5. Which to learn first? Linux or Oracle?

My office uses the Oracle database in RHEL 5. Which one should I control everything first to be a qualified DBA? Linux or Oracle? If the answer is Linux, where can I find Linux tutorial for Dummies since I have never handled Linux in my life before. Thank you

    Both.

Best way to start is to install a virtual machine on your computer and download a distribution (Ubuntu, Fedora Core, etc.) Live, install it. While you play around Linux in your virtual machine, install oracle on your windows system and start playing. The only real difference you will encounter when playing with the oracle databases is the path to the file reference. It may seem hard to start, but have arrived at the point where you know enough to install oracle on linux (install apps via YUM or rpm, configuration change, install other demons or services; IE: postfix, samba, smtp, etc.) and learn about creating users, create spaces for storage, creating tables/procedures/packages, change system settings, creating the database links, etc. you'll be on your way.

However becoming a DBA is not as simple as all about Linux and Oracle. Since you have not indicated what you know on this area, I'll assume a few things. First when you start working as a DBA, you can just run Oracle under Linux, you can run oracle on HP - UX, AIX, Linux, Solaris and Windows. In addition, you will be expected also know about writing queries and queries optimization. There is no magic parameters that make the databases to run fast, you have to know how they work, how queires are executed by the sql parser (this is where are real performance gains).

One thing that I was constantly should know (with details) is oracle licenses. This is a nightmare, and it takes time to learn how the licenses work so that you can give advise for new projects that want to use certain technologies to oracle. It is very intimidating at first, but as learn you more about it and become more comfortable on the use and to know all these things it will become second nature to you. If you know WHAT DBA (work colleagues or friends) to talk to them, encourage them to show you, you will learn a lot more in less time than learning by yourself.

Learn how to look for things in the documentation is good time invest in your career. To this end, you should drop everything you're doing and do the following:

    Go to [url tahiti.oracle.com] tahiti.oracle.com.

    Explore your product and version.

    TO BOOKMARK THIS SITE

Spend a few minutes to familiarize yourself with what is available here. Take note special tabs "books" and "search". Under the tab 'books' (for 10.x) or the "Master books list" link (for 11.x), you will find the complete documentation library.

Spend a few minutes just know what kind of documentation is available by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab

Open the reference manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to familiarize yourself with what kind of information is available here.

Do the same with the SQL reference manual.

Do the same with the utilities manual.

Do not read the above in depth. These are reference manuals. Knowing that just getting here is to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes just looking for one of the books above.

Then, set a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts manual.
-Take a look in your alert log. One of the first things listed at startup is the parms of initialized with default values. Find out about each of them (shown in your alerts log) in the reference manual.
-Take a look at your sqlnet.ora, listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files. Go to the manual of network administrators and ask about what you see in these files.
    - When you have finished reading the guide to Concepts, do it again.

Everything you did for RHEL5.2 will work perfectly in OEL5.2

You raise a very good point: the unfortunate fact is that there is * nothing * to all to OEL a house "better" or "easier" for that plain old RHEL Oracle databases. There is no core set environment variable user parameters or pre configured, for example, it would be just for an Oracle straight out of the box installation: you must always you fix all exactly as if it were of RHEL.

This is normal: OEL was and is intended to be binary compatible with RHEL and therefore no settings of Oracle or parameters that are not in RHEL can be included in the OEL.

So yes, if it's complicated on RHEL, it is exactly as complicated as on OEL.

(I'm biased though: If you use my script to doris, you will find that you can install Oracle on virtually any Linux distribution as easily as any other.) See http://dizwell.com/2008/05/01/doris-redux, and if you want to watch a video of how to do to use the script: http://dizwell.com/2008/09/29/proving-a-point/)

    Hello

I'm trying to configure MPIO on a host (running Oracle Enterprise Linux Server 5.7) connected to an Powervault MD3200i. I have a few unexpected problems with/dev/dm-0 missing after reboot.

I configured 3 virtual disks (RAID 1) with MPIO. 3 devices have been created (/ dev/dm-0, / dev/dm-1 and/dev/dm-2).  If I mount them manually, they work very well, so I've added to the fstab. After a reboot, I checked that/dev/dm-1 and/dev/dm-2 have been automatically but is not/dev/dm-0. In fact, the/dev/dm-0 has disappeared from the directory of the device (!)

If I rinse 'multipath f' and ' multipath - v2 "the device gets recreated, but disappears on the"

    Thanks in advance.

    See you soon

I thought about it... the problem is that I had the wrong specified dev in fstab.

  • Install Oracle GoldenGate Linux to synchronize two schemas from database on a single server

    Hi all

I have to synchronize two schemas from database (Oracle 12 c) in a single host RedHat Linux to demonstrate and understand the use of OGG V12.1.2.1.0. I try to do. But it's complicated and confused me because I am new to Oracle and Linux. I followed this tutorial ( install Oracle GoldenGate for Oracle 12.1.2 on CentOS/6.x to 6.x/RHEL Linux 6.x EL ). But it is difficult to understand how I can match with two diagrams of database on a single server.

And I found this tutorial (Oracle GoldenGate on Linux: two-way replication of Oracle 11 GR 2 to Oracle 11 g 2). He said: "" If you have that one host, it may be useful to change the /etc/hosts file to create aliases forhost01.example.com and host02.example.com.". What it really means?

The other seems to be useful. But it's totally different from 1. Is that this will help my job since I use 12 c Oracle Server?

Can I get some tips to continue my task?

    Here's another tutorial - http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/fmw/goldengate/12c/OGG12c_Integrated_Replicat/index.html

It has everything set up on a single Linux host.

"You can keep all your types of database credentials (associate, professional, Expert and Master) in State ASSETS by winning a single credential OCA, OCP or CMO in the CURRENT version of Oracle Database certification."

Based on this statement, you take a certification or 11g OCA/OCP/CMO 12 c will prevent any expert version-specific certifications being expired.

It is worth noting that the reverse is not true, taking a current CEO of certification does * not * prevent anything either, but an earlier version of this same certification expires.  Really means a lot right now because he communicated there very little specific expert certificates (RAC, performance and Tuning SQL optimization are the only 11g those for example), but it's something to know.
