Oracle on Linux VS Oracle under Windows

Hello

I've been using oracle on 64-bit windows 8 for recent years.

Is there a big difference in performance between Oracle on Oracle VS Linux on Windows?

Can I migrate to Linux and start learning early on my curve?

Kind regards

Hussien Sharaf

Hello

Most people will tell you that Linux is the best OS for the execution of Oracle database. In General, Windows has a bad reputation when it comes to Oracle databases running.

I worked with both platforms and from my point of view, Windows is as good as Linux in terms of performance.

Oracle supports all Windows and there is a lot of customers Oracle that works with Windows. What is more, Linux requires the DBA to have system administration skills more than Windows. Windows is simpler and easier to manage and deploy in terms of 'Skills' If you team COMPUTER lacks these skills, it will be problematic to install more advanced as RAC environments.

Google will show you that this question is common and you can find more information in the following links:

ORACLE is slower on Windows and on Linux?

Bottom line:

  • Choose the operating system really depends on what you the company is used to work with and comfortable you and your sysadmins with each platform.
  • I think that finally, you will have to perform (repositories) stress tests yourself in order to be 100% sure that Windows can provide as good as Linux performance in order to get the confidence you need.

  • Give advice about uninstalling the database Client Oracle under Windows with multiple Oracle homes

    Hi all.

Probably a Client of Oracle database uninstall will arrive in a Windows box, where there are several houses of Oracle:

    (1) the Oracle Database 11 g Client is.

    (2) the House of Oracle Oracle database server.

    (3) oracle 6i Oracle Home.

    I have these concerns:

    (1) do I stop Oracle Services NOT related to the Oracle Home being deleted? I guess that's not necessary, but it is recommended?

    (2) the YES program to run must be or is better to use the YES program located at removed Oracle (Oracle Client to Database 11 g in this situation)?

"(3) I see there are additional post - installation according to section 5.3 steps"manually remove the Oracle database Client components remaining' the Oracle Client Installation Guide for Windows.

Could someone provide the additional steps or recommendations?

Sorry but I do not trust the windows plataform much!

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards, Luis!

    Hello myluism,

You can use the oracle supplied binary dinstall to uninstall oracle binaries that you can download from this url of Oracle Database 11 g Release 2 for Microsoft Windows (x 64) that looks good in your context.

In addition, you can also uninstall the binary files by running the dinstall respecitive houses Oracle located in the path: ORACLE_HOME\dinstall.

Please go through the url: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e47959/deinstall.htm#NTCLI1326

    I hope this helps.

    Thank you and best regards.

  • NoSQL Oracle under Windows.

    Hi all

I am new to Oracle NoSQL, and I'm trying to develop the same application. so I do it on windows 7 OS. But cannot run kvclient on windows.

    So, how can I do?

    Please suggest me.

    Thanks in advance!

Just to let you know, Windows is not an officially support platform for Oracle NoSQL Database.  You can use kvlite to get an idea of the NoSQL APIs and to test a simulated application, but we don't certify Windows as a product platform.  Are you referring to the kvlient.jat file when you say that you are unable to run kvlient on Windows?

    Sql> conn as sysdba

    Connected.
My conclusion humble , _ I could connect to oracle as a sysdba with any username as long as the password is the user name( the username and the password is the same ).
Previously, I suggested that Windows creates these users in the ora_dba group, but when I checked there is no such windows users. The only user with ora_dba is administrator.

    My computer is a Latitude E6400laptop *.
OS Name:                   Microsoft Windows XP Professional

    ..
    System Model:              Latitude E6400
    System type:               X86-based PC
FYI, I found the same with different situation for laptop (with the same version of oracle).

Can someone provide explanations? What kind of bugs?

How can I disable this feature/bug?

    Kind regards

No, this is not a bug but its expected behavior. You use the authentication of the BONE , and this means, you don't need to use the password for the Sys user login.

I suggested that Windows creates these users in the ora_dba group, but when I checked there is no such windows users. The only user with ora_dba is administrator.

It's a hypothesis very badly done. The group is a group o/s and if the account of the o/s which is administrator, in your case is a part of this group, Oracle would not use the password.

Please spend some time reading the literature thereon,

    Hello

As a point of Contact for my client, we need to install OBIEE 11.1.1.7 under Windows, but we are not allowed to install Oracle database on Windows (very strict regulation of the client) machine.

My question is if possible install OBIEE 11.1.1.7 (server, Installation of the company) on Windows 2008 (R2 Standard 64-bit SP1) and use as a support for (UCR and everything, including data dashboards) Oracle database (11 g) installed on a Linux machine?

Thank you very much for your answers!

As I'm on a time pressure, I thank you very much once again for quick answers.

    Yes.

As long that you can reach this DB OBIEE server it's OK.

In addition, you can run the RCU to any other box as well (or the box of OBIEE).

    Hello

I would like to devise a recommended plan the following:

    1 Server Oracle 10 g 2 is currently under Windows Server 2003.
    2. required to upgrade the database to 11 GR 2.
    3. migrate the database to the Linux platform.

Could you please share ideas and paths recommended for this job?

    Please and thank you!

    Ken

The simplest method is to run and export / import - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/expimp.htm

I recommend that you use the same process for Dev and Production databases. PL answer other questions of the Justin - size and service interruptions will be the factors that will determine your approach

  • Pachting Oracle 11.1 under Windows 2008 32 bit

    Hello community, Oracle,.

I installed a publishing standard oracle 11.1.0.7.0 under windows 2008 32 bit. When you create a database, I get an ORA-12560 error. I had this problem before, and the solution was, pachting the first instance, and then install the database with the dbca Wizard. Now my question is what is the best practice to patch the database to keep up-to-date. When you use advanced search in metalink didn't group patches, but 97 fixes some older then 1 year. I'm a bit confused and do not know which patch I have to install.

You will find the link in the note mentioned under 32-bit patches.

  • E.M.P. 11.1.2.2 under Windows or Linux

    Hi Experts,

Which environment is best for the EPM, Windows or Linux system?

I want to run below the products based on your opinion...

    1. Oracle Hyperion Shared Services
    2. Oracle Hyperion Planning
    3. Oracle Hyperion Essbase
    4. Oracle Hyperion Reporting and analysis (financial reports)
    5. Oracle Hyperion Financial Management (HFM)
    6. The Oracle (FDQM) Hyperion financial data quality management

I would like to run all above products either on Windows or Linux (not mixed mode)

    Your comments please!

HFM & FDQM are not supported under Linux because they are Windows-based products. Check the Support Matrix: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-foundation/oracle-hyperion-epm-system-certific-131801.xls

You can go to Windows if you opt for 1 single BONE for the rest of the EMP.

If you have never recreated/restored/reincarnated the database, then COLUMN of v database $ should tell you when you created the database.

If you are looking for the time of installing Oracle home, check the logs under OraInventory.

    Edited by: 883687 August 15, 2012 23:08

    Hello;

It should be possible. The ORA-27040 is

"O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified."

and the second error ORA-27040 seems to be an effect of the first.

File create error, unable to create file

Could be a permissions problem, so if you can mount the disk space windows, but cannot write to it (yet)

There is a note of support Oracle that covers this:

ORA-19504 ORA-27040 during Rman backup in a Directory Windows mounted under Linux [464267.1 ID]

Which confirms, in my view, the answer is Yes.

    Further that:

RMAN fail with ORA-19504 ORA-27040 when backup remote server linux [726858.1 ID] Windows Mount Volume
