Kernel parameter Impact the performance of Timesten

Hello

Can you please guide me on the impact of certain parameters of the kernel/hardware on Timesten performance:

kernel.shmmax
kernel.shmall
kernel.msgmni
kernel.shmmni

I have two servers with the same Timesten DSN configuration. A particular process takes 15 ms on a single server (Server A) and 5 (Server B) ms on the other hand. Timesten versions and linux on both are similar. Memory is the same (32 GB). The DSN settings are exactly the same as well.

Comparing cpuinfo and sysctl.conf, I found the following differences:
Server A

cpuinfo

Hi Kiki,

These kernel parameters affect the performance. They will simply affect how much shared memory, messages and semaphores are configured in the kernel. This could affect whether a particular TimesTen data store can be loaded into memory or not, but if it charges so that they have no real effect on the performance.

The difference in performance is due to this:

model name: Intel(r) Xeon E7540 CPU @ * 2.00GHz*
step by step: 6
CPU MHz: * 1064.000*
cache size: 18432 KB
CPU cores: 6

in relation to this:

model name: Intel(r) Xeon E5620 of CPU @ * 2.40GHz*
walk: 2
CPU MHz: * 2400.000*
cache size: 12288 KB
CPU cores: 4

The second machine has a significantly faster processor...

No, there is no impact on performance.  The controls cancel the MAPPING do not cause a problem for Dell Equallogic storage devices.

  • impact on the performance of the vmware tools

We had discussions about the performance impact of the installation on a virtual machine vmware tools.

Are their any comparison between a system running vanilla versus a running vmware tools installed?

Obviously, I think that the system will go faster with vmware drivers installed.

Tools will only help IO performance (not counting usually do things like graphics and synchronization times work better).  If your virtual machine has no important networking or storage needs, then you probably don't need the tools.  I'm usually not worth.

If you want very good performance network without tools, make sure you use a device virtual e1000.  You can define ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000".  This is not quite as good as real vmxnet (or new vmxnet3) but is much better than the default vlance. If you regularly push 1Gbit or more real traffic to your virtual machines, I would consider it.

Paravirtualized SCSI is fairly new, but since I have seen that there is a performance gain enough points of reference.  But even once, most likely you need not, unless you use a disc very heavy VM I/O, such as an Oracle database server.

If you consolidate underutilized physical machines who never use 100% CPU/network/disk, then Tools are probably a waste of time.  But if you want as close as possible to performance native and CPU utilization during intensive i/o, then Tools are worth.

As for Redhat don't support our drivers for VMware tools, I don't see why this would practically be a problem-if you have any question/crash that you think may be related to our tools, you can always uninstall and go back to where you were before.  If you have an unrelated question, and you are worried Redhat refused to help with tools, you can do the same thing.  So what's the harm in trying them?

I check I can pass a Variant to a Subvi with a copy, but it is still impossible to do something (scaling limit controls etc.) with a Variant without first copying it in a new buffer the conversion 'of the Variant.

    Thus,.

For large sets of data, the variants are a bad idea.

  • KB973687 - msxml3.dll msxml6.dll - services.exe uses excessive virtual memory, the performance impact on the first logon after restart

Since the installation of fix KB973687, I had several SP2 and SP3 systems exhibit behavior that makes them unusable until after the first logon is completed, which can take up to 20 minutes.   I've identified the patch (KB973687) and DLLs, that it will update the origin of the problem, but uninstalling the patch does NOT return to normal operation.

I need to understand how to upgrade these systems WindowsXP SP2 and SP3 to restore normal operation, reinstalling Windows, programs, and settings is an expensive solution.

The performance problem is caused by services.exe slowly consumes about 1.5 GB of virtual memory, and then slowly releasing.  This seems to be triggered by the first logon after restart, this connection is very slow, the screen is blank for most of it, there might be failures of allocation memory during logon.  Once complete this opening of session and memory usage returns to normal levels, recording and return to work normally as do other operations until the system is restarted.

Spent a lot of time working with SysInternals Process Explorer, trying to find what specific service might be involved, lightweight system for bare essential services with no luck.

KB973687 seems to offer only two files msxml3.dll and msxml6.dll.  Uninstalling this patch, resettlement V3 and V6 of the XML parser fail to restore normal operation.

Not all systems seem to have place still restrict the differences.  Systems that are appear to be the oldest, with Windows XP has been installed for at least a year, installed Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.

Looking for these forums and the Internet, I believe that many have encountered this problem, but have not is it this level of analysis, seem most attribute it to a virus, I see several start explorer.exe manually, I didn't know all the alternatives before reinstalling Windows.

Found the solution, the following has been fixed in System Cleaner of Comodo 2.2.129172.4:

"For some strange reason, after changing some settings of the system with the CSC LastGood.tmp Directoy began to constantly be read from my hard drive. This would occur up to about 90 to 99% of my memory was used and then stopped, begin to free the memory, and the system began to slowly to function normally.
I used the process explore from sysinternals to help diagnose the problem with any process other than services.exe using memory.

I used sysinterals filemonitor to see LastGood.tmp directory has been read repeatedly.
After you have uninstalled CSC the problem has been resolved. »

Even with the effort to find the solution, it was better to reinstall.  Hope this solution helps others.

  • Impacts on the performance of the attributes from the features of data model design

I'm trying to understand the implications of the performance of two possible data model design.

Here is my structure of the entity:

    Global > person > account > option

Generally, when running, I instantiated a person, a single accountand five option's .

There are various amounts determined according to the age of the person who should be assigned to the correct option.

    Here are my two designs:

    Design a

attributes on the entity of the person :
    age of the person
    its option 1 amount
    its option 2 amount
    its option 3 amount
    its option quantity 4
    its option 5 amount

    attributes on the option endity:
    amount of the option

    support table rules:
    option = amount
its option 1 amount if the option is number 1
its option 2 amount if the option number 2
its option 3 amount if the option number 3
its 4 option amount if the option is number 4
its option 5 amount if the option is number 5

    Two design

attributes on the entity of the person :
    age of the person

attributes on the entity of the option :
    amount of the option
of the option option 1 amount
of the option option 2 amount
of the option option 3 amount
    of the option quantity 4
of the option option 5 amount

    support table rules:
    option = amount
of the option option 1 amount if the option is number 1
option 2 amount option if the option number 2
of the option option 3 amount if the option number 3
the option amount 4 If the option is number 4
option 5 option amount if the option is number 5

Given two models, I can see what looks like an advantage for a design that, when running, you have less attributes (6 on retirement member + 1 on each of the 5 options = 11) as two Design (1 on retirement members + 6 on each of the 5 options = 31), but I'm not sure. An advantage to design two might be that the algorithm must do less through the structure of the entity: the table of rules support everything for the amount of the option option.

Anyway there is a table of rules to determine the amounts:

    Design a
    its option 1 amount =
    2 if age = 10
    5 if age = 11
    7 if age = 12, etc..

    Design two
of the option option 1 amount =
    2 if age = 10
    5 if age = 11
    7 if age = 12, etc..

Here, it seems that the one would have to cross over the structure of the entity for the design of two.

The design will have a better performance with a large amount of rules, or it would make a difference at all?

    Hello!

In our experience, just think about this kind of stuff if you were dealing with 100's or 1000 instances (usually through ODS). You have a very low number, the differences will be negligible, as you should (in general) go with the solution that is most similar to the material of origin or the understanding of the business user. Also, I guess that's an OWD project? Which may be even better, the inference is performed gradually when new data are added to the modules, rather than in a 'big bang' as ODS.

It seems that the model 1 is the easiest to understand and explain. I wonder why you have the option at all entity, because it seems to be a relationship to one? If the person cannot have only a single amount of option 1, option 2 amount etc, and there's only ever going to be (up to) 5 options... is this assumption correct? If so, you can keep just like the attributes at the level of the person without the need for bodies. If there are other requirements of an instance of the option then, of course, use them, but given the information here, the option feature doesn't seem to be necessary. It would be the fastest of all :-)

Whatever it is, that the number of instances is so low, you should have nothing to fear in terms of performance.

I hope this helps! Write back if you have more info / questions.
    See you soon,.

  • Impact on performance when you use the LONG data type

    Hi all

Only I have a doubt about the use of LONG data type

I use the data type LONG for some columns in a table and I created indexes on the columns separately, but these column values can be easily fit into the varchar data type.

(Just to see the performance on this issue)

Suppose that a common select query with WHERE condition on any of the column which has LONG data type will affect the performance of the query?

    Please explain.

    Thank you

    (1) the LONG (and LONG RAW) data types have been depricated for quite a while. Oracle has been strongly recommends that you move to 8.1.5 CLOB and BLOB data types. Why you use the LONG data type? You're still on Oracle 7?

    (2) have you tried to write a query that has a WHERE condition that refers to a LONG column? In general, you can not because it does not support the type of data LONG. For example

    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf

      1 create table a (
      2 col1 varchar2(30),
      3 col2 long
      4* )
    SQL> /

    Table created.

    SQL> select * from a where col2='abc';
    select * from a where col2='abc'
                          *
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatype

LONG data types are a royal pain to work with. They also have implications on the performance of wicked on the client.

  • East-audio/video or advertising photos in the tab 'not open' affect the performance of Firefox?

From what I understand the audio Forum leaking by a tab can be cut. This means that the most important activity such as periodic updates on a page to download advertisements could also affect Firefox performance even if the tab has not been clicked. Is this true?

Once the tab has been loaded, any video or audio active in this tab will have a negative impact on the performance of Firefox.

In the options, you can tell Firefox to not load the tab until it is selected, but once you select the tab for the first time, the site will remain responsible.

  • power button will affect the performance of the system

    Mr President.

I was forced to use the power button to turn off my laptop HP 2231tx G6 in certain circumstances. I would like to know if this will affect all my gear system & impact on its performance. Because mine is only a new system.

Using the power button to turn off the computer will not affect the system hardware or your computer's performance. It can, however, lead to the system indicates that it "didn't stop in properly" and may require the system to the performance of a hard disk check before starting entirely. In addition, you can lose data by turning off the computer by this means.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

  • Performance indicators? How to confirm the performance?

I'm getting very concerned by the speed of copy/transfer files to and from the Media Hub.  I bought it mainly as a NAS, but maybe it was my mistake, I thought not performance would be as slow as it sounds.   I've seen the other comments on the performance, some answers have been pointing users to check their networks.  I would like to know if there are some points of reference which can be published so that we can compare against them.  Publish the test script and the results, then we can run the same tests and compare the results.  I can withdraw from my network and connect directly to a switch isolated for testing if necessary, but I'd rather not have to disconnect things and go through that effort if I can test everything first and see how far off I am standard expectation.

If I can at least know what the performance of the target for this type of operation, it would help me to decide if I should invest several times in this or switch to a dedicated NAS.

In addition, one of the things that I suspect a little is the Twonky Media scanning server.  I have it turned off, but have not yet restarted to confirm that I am in the middle of a great copy that looks like it's going to be two days.  Are there other parameters of Twonky can I disable in order to minimize its impact, or can I disable Twonky completely?

    Crossfyre,

If you are looking for a site that compares and reviews the performance of NAS devices on the market, including the Linksys Media Hub Smallnetbuilder.com would be a good starting point.

    Try this link.

    Please help, THX 1 billion

    Hello Derek,.

Please keep us updated on the status of the issue.

I'm sorry for the late reply.

The IFE can be used to show what part of the system should provide the largest increase in performance when it is upgraded. For example, a computer with the lower under-score in his memory, would benefit more than an upgrade of RAM to add a faster hard drive (or any other component).

  • Performance parameters to validate the performance of the managed server

    Hello

We have 5 servers managed in weblogic domain, each managed servers on different unix box, we will decommission one of the managed server.

Now the question is how, how we measure the impact on performance, load etc. of the managed servers. Once we have removed from service in 1 server load is managed by 4 servers now. How can we better measure the results here.

Your advice and help is very appreciated.

    Thank you

WLDF is designed with the use of production in mind. Performance will impact, of course, depends on how much and how often it will collect data. As a general rule, you pay only for the active components of WLDF. So, you can configure it in the production environment and allow him progressively according to the needs.

  • Is this OK to run the utility on the active node TimesTen ttMigrate?

    Hello

I heard that it is not a good idea to run the utility on the active node TimesTen ttMigrate but I saw no logical technical or a document explaining why?

When you get a chance, please let me know.

    Thank you

    Sunil

I guess you're referring to the execution of ttMigrate - a or c - to export one or more tables in an external file?

The active node is usually much more heavily loaded than the day before and more sensitive to disturbance by activities such as an unloading of big data. In addition, according to the options that you use (or not use) with ttMigrate you will lock entire tables or hierarchies table whole even while the ttMigrate works and this could be very disruptive to applications running on the back-end database and could lead to timeout lock etc. Replication takes his retirement automatically for this kind of error if you run the ttMigrate on the starting node you will not impact on applications and you'll have only a relatively small impact on replication.

If you do not want the sensation exported 100% transactional consistency (assuming that there are DML activity going on against the exported table) then you can use instead

ttBulkCp o with the option - noForceSerializable to avoid any impact on the application to access the table.
