Keys CTRL FN L420 tradable in the BIOS?

Hello

I am considering a L420, but as a user of Emacs I don't think I'd be happy with the mentioned keys.

Some research, it seems that the Thinkpads 'most recent' have a BIOS option to swap these keys. Not being not too familiar with the ThinkPad, I know not if "most recent" include the L420. The section of keyboard BIOS in the user manual does not mention this.

Can anyone confirm that they are replaceable?

Thank you!

Eivind

Hello vikebo and welcome to the community.

The BIOS of the laptop L420 have not this option to be available.

Maybe in the future with the update of the BIOS, we get this option.

Best regards

Tanuj

This update can not damage the laptop?

    This update is a risk?
P.S.: I use Windows Xp SP2, Vista not.

    Thank you

    Hello

The update of the BIOS is only risky If you would use incompatible BIOS or use a wrong update procedure.

If you have installed XP on your computer A200 laptop then a BIOS upgrade to the XP version would be desirable because of one of the main reasons.
Without the version of BIOS XP your FN buttons will not work.

So if you want to use the FN keys, the update of the BIOS XP is not necessary.
But if you want to use the FN keys, you will need to update the BIOS to the XP version.

  • 22-3020: updating the BIOS with the utility HP - big mistake

I have a model all-in-one 22-3020 who Support Assistant who kept harassing me to do a BIOS update.  I followed the instructions, he made a back-up and then the utility went down.  When you are finished, I continued to use the computer without a problem.

The next morning, I got a white screen, waved the mouse to activate the standby mode screen (I guess) and if the computer was on, I couldn't any screen.  I restarted the computer (several times) with no screen.  Then, I searched this problem on Google and found a recommendation to hit the F10 key for 8 seconds, arrow down 3 times, and then press enter two times.  It was suggested that the BIOS update has somehow got stuck in standby mode.

I tried without success and took the computer to a local repair center who told me that they couldn't access the BIOS to go back, or set.  In short, they said that the assistant to Support HP probably brick my computer and I would probably need to replace the motherboard.  I'll pass.

Can anyone offer any other suggestions on how to try to restart the computer?  Is it possible to connect another monitor using the USB or HDMI so I can see if the F10 key is me to get into the BIOS (although I suppose that the repair people who would have thought).

I'm the only one who has had my computer in brick by this utility that comes on the computer?

    Any help appreciated.

  • I can reduce the brightness of the screen of the BIOS?

I have HP Pavilion dv7 7003 - portable tx which has 17.3 "FHD display. I have 2 simple questions that I have not found someone asked before.

First question. I can easily adjust brightness laptop computer under Windows 7. But the BIOS screen full backlit. Normally, it is not a problem (because of the black of the screen IE "Press ESC for Boot Menu" and the Windows Logo on a black background). But when I access the BIOS Setup or upgrade of BIOS (of course), it's no doubt noticeable that this laptop backlit is complete before starting Windows. When I connect the laptop with an HDTV via HDMI, BIOS Configuration screen backlit is bearable in the screen of the TV (depending on the setting of the TV) and unbearable (IE full backlit and white background of the HP BIOS configuration) in the screen of the laptop at the same time. It is a problem of laptop screen adjustment. I want to adjust the brightness of the laptop regardless of starting Windows screen. I can reduce the brightness of the screen of the BIOS in your laptop monitor?

Second question. Can I put in screen laptop for something like "fit screen"? Currently, it is set to something like "Stretch screen. I don't like the duct Chassis Windows startup Logo. However, under Windows, I can play 4:3 resolution games in something like setting "fit screen".

    Thank you.

Not the F2 and F3 keys is not a function in the BIOS. The screen cannot be cleared up or dimmed inside the BIOS.

For the issue of screen resolution, the resolution provided for within Windows should also be the resolution on login/Welcome screen. Try to reset your resolution in Windows (without an attached external monitor), and then restart it a few times to see if the resolution sticks throughout the boot process. Let me know the results when you get a chance.

  • Tecra M10 - stuck - CTRL key question may be to do with the BIOS?

    Hello and thanks for reading.

I recently changed my Tecra M10 to Windows 7 (from XP), and it quickly developed the dreaded question-button stuck CTRL This causes the keyboard behaves as if the CTRL key is pressed continuously. Sometimes reaching a key combination, or bring up the on-screen keyboard, temporarily solves the problem, but he returned.

It seems to be a problem that many people have no simple solution. I watched each thread that I find and tried a lot of things to do with drivers etc without success.

So first of all, if anyone knows a remedy that works for this particular machine, I would be very grateful to hear!

Then, there are two things that I did not yet: updating the BIOS and turn off pinch zoom.

I was watching the following BIOS update:

    http://www.Toshiba-Asia.com/SG/support/drivers/details/25244

... which is the version 3.00 and seem to be more recent. My version is 1.90.

However, version 3.00 is labeled "for PTMB0 * ONLY. I don't know what that means or if it applies to me. Can anyone help? Should I install this BIOS?

For the pinch zoom, I was informed that disable sometimes cures the problem CTRL - but I can't find any installation zoom pinch on the M10. I think he doesn't have any one. Is this fair?

Thanks much for any help you can give.

    Hello

    > I was watching the next BIOS update. is the version 3.00, which seems to be most recent. My version is 1.90.

There are different Tecra M10 models on the market.
Check the labels at the bottom of the unit. There you should find numbers like for example PTMB0E-01K00LGR

The first 6 characters are important: for example PTMB0E

I guess that your laptop belongs to the series of Europeans.
In this case, you should check the page of the Toshiba UE driver for a possible update of the BIOS.
    http://www.Toshiba.EU/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

However, on the page of the Toshiba UE driver you will also find the BIOS for all European units Tecra M10 v3.0.

Anyway, back to Ctrl + button question: guess what, you need to connect an external USB keyboard and must check how is the CTRL key.
In case the USB keyboard would work properly, the internal keyboard CTRL key is assigned and you will need to replace the internal keyboard.

PS: it would be possible that the "sticky keys" option has been activated. To disable this feature, you must press SHIFT 5 times in the line.

    Adding support for shortcut key Fn + p (Pause) / Fn + K (stop scroll) / Fn + B (Left-Ctrl + Break) / Fn + S (Left-Alt + SysRq)

But this change is bug. I use exchanged Fn and Ctrl key. And the combination of keys CTRL + S produces CTRL + ALT. Please correct.

  • Portege R100 and Linux - function keys not working do not and the latest version of the BIOS?

    Hello world

I have a Portege R100 (PPR10L-13G10P). I am trying to install Linux and when you try to access function keys (F6) the computer does not allow me to... no idea why?

Also, what is the latest version of BIOS for this computer? And where it can be downloaded?

    Thanks in advance!

    Terrence

    Hello

At first, I must say that Toshiba doesn't support Linux in general if you are alone with this problem.
I hope that someone will be able to help you a bit.
If you want to discover the latest version of the BIOS, just enter the BIOS settings and check it out.
BIOS version latest won't help you at all, so my opinion is that you shouldn't change anything.

Anyway, the bio download page is - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_bios.jsp

The feature keys F is supported by special tool Windows and it only works on Windows.

    Hi Thomas,

The normal to access the BIOS path will be to press ESC then F1 during startup. This will give you the BIOS menu. Some laptops use ESC to show the progress of the POST and F2 to enter the BIOS menu.

F8 will allow you to start in safe mode.

F12 to select boot device (disk, CD, etc.).
