My external Western Digital USB hard drive is not recognized in my computer.

I see it in Device Manager and computer management/disk management but not in my computer.

The external hard drive is there but not recognized on my computer.

I need to restore from this external hard drive, but I can't access it.

most of the answers deals with reformatting... the original post says he wants recover from this drive to reformat does not help... the external usb drives, equipped with cables that have 2 ends of usb, connect the two in to; separated on the MB, separate usb hubs usb ports it is because power is causing problems (current rises to voltage drops) then sometimes access to the drive causes the voltage on a single falling down USB, think the os it's read-only / permission issues, with 2 connected to separate power sources the question goes... they were built that way...

I also recommend to never put a USB through a third party hub as more often which can cause problems with the unrecognized drive.

That said, yes I had to reformat to access a drive, if you cannot write to a disc rclick and observe the permissions, if you have formatted the drive on another pc and not changed the permissions for everyone, then under sercurity see you permissions set on a long number, it is because he is always set to original pc (or the id of this pc). Sometimes you can over the way these parameters by taking possession (in the s parameters) and reset to everyone on the local pc.

Something else I found on the disc is not recognized... Plug it into the usb port as described above and restart the pc, I got this job...

Note: I deal with almost all the avalible from different readers that my clients use them all.

I have an external HD that has been unplugued without eject by mistake. Since then, the HD is not recognized by the finder or disk utility.

  • External hard drive is not recognized

My external hard drive is not recognized by windows, the led lights up but no display on 'my computer '.

Try it on another computer, if it doesn't, it could be a bad cable or hard drive box. Use a different cable or an enclosure.

If it works on another computer, on your computer check the disk, if it is displayed in computer management. In Explorer, right click on "Computer", click 'manage '. Under computer management, storage, click on "disk management". If it is showing a right click on it, click on «Change drive letter and path...» ", click the"Edit"button and then assign a drive letter.

Or if the reader is displayed, you can check in the Device Manager. In the device under Universal Serial Bus controllers Manager looking for the drive generally a mass storage device, right-click on it, uninstall and then restart. If does not uninstall everything under USB controllers, then restart your computer.

  • Hard drive is not recognized in the BIOS - Equium A60

Hi hope someone can help. I have a Toshiba Equium EA60-173 and the hard drive is not recognized in the BIOS. When I remove the hard drive and put it in another laptop it is detected fine. I also tried another hard drive in the Toshiba and that does not work either. So I suspect the IDE controller has disappeared, but can I do to confirm this? I wish there was an option in the BIOS to force detection. I updated the BIOS but still the same.

This laptop is only just out of warranty, so if it is the controller would I need to replace the motherboard? Are there other options at my disposal?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Neil,

Unless there is some physical\problem with the cable/connector hard drive, then it is most likely that you will have a new mainboard for your laptop. I suggest you to contact an authorized service partner and ask them to check your laptop and give you an estimate of the cost of the repair. Then you can try to shop for less expensive alternatives.

    Kind regards

  • IPhoto on the external hard drive will not launch despite the force quit and relaunch several times. Can someone help me?

I have a MacBook from 2008. 4 years ago I moved my iPhoto on an external hard drive. I have thousands if photos on it. IPhoto on the external hard drive will not launch despite the force quit and relaunch several times. Can someone help me?

    < re-titled by host >

I moved my iPhoto on an external hard drive.

Did you move the iPhoto library for the external hard drive or the iPhoto application, or both?

How is formatted the external hard drive? Is the file system on the drive Mac OS extended (journaled) or other system files?  Is the drive directly connected by USB or similar, or is it a SIN?

IPhoto on the external hard drive will not launch despite the force quit and relaunch several times.

I don't understand - if you force quit smoking, launches the application, or you can not force it quit?

IPhoto is suspended without doing anything, when you launch?

What version of iPhoto does? And what version of Mac OS X?

  • HARD drive is not recognized on the Satellite 2800 200

    Hello

First of all, I'm Dutch so I hope that I do not have too many mistakes in my English writing.

    I bought a 2800-200 Satellite at a friend's House. This laptop has a problem.
When it is started is says "insert the disk in the drive system. Press a key when readya?.

My bios is ACPI BIOS version 1.80
In Pheripheral in Bios it says disc hard = not used Mode.

On page two discs i/o: HARD drive: no drive.

I tried two hard drives and the two were not working and not recognized in the BIOS.
I have no CD of restoration.

    My questions:

What kind of central computer has this laptop?
Can someone help me with the recovery CD?
What can I do to fix this?
How can I change my BIOS so that the HARD drive is recognized?

My hard drive is MK2023GAS and is not broken. There is nothing on this HARD drive.
But also with the disk hard 10 GB of origin, I had the same problem.

I hope you can help me and once again I apologize for my English.

    Hello

I'll try to help you my friend.

    > When it is started is says "insert the disk in the drive system. Press any key when ready
This message appeared on my laptop after the HARD disk is dead.
I had to replace the HARD drive and reinstall the operating system.

I guess that it of the same problem with your laptop. The HARD drive is not present or not recognized, and you will need to install a compatible HDD for the operation of the OS.

I have google a bit and discovered that this laptop comes with the 10 GB HARD MK1016GAP of Toshiba drive. It supports the interface ATA-2/ATA-3/ATA-4/ATA-5.

Please note that many BIOS have a limit of size of HARD drive. This means that not all HARD drive sizes are supported! I assume a 20 GB should be compatible, but this is just my own opinion
    > How can I change my BIOS so that the HARD drive is recognized?
The BIOS can be modified outside the update (check page driver Toshiba-> Archive-> archive of Satellite).
But vary important is that you use a compatible HARD drive.

    > Can someone help me with the recovery CD?
Don t know if you will be able to order this CD at the service provider allowed in your country, because the laptop is really an oldie. But you should ask the guys.
What you is to install the OS from the Microsoft CD-ROM and then could install drivers needed.

    Hello

Spilled water on the keyboard. Laptop has stopped working.
Dried, but did not recognize the HDD start up and HDD does not Set - up.
Moved the HARD drive to another location of the HARD drive on the laptop and it appears at startup and boot OK.
Is there an easy way to find and repair the defective HARD drive slot?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hello

The HARD drive slot is not repairable. It s a HARD disk controller and I guess the HARD disk controller is dead.
The HARD disk controller is part of the motherboard and if you want to repair it, so the entire motherboard must be replaced.

New motherboard would cost a small fortune he of not good about market 350Euros
That's why I put t think it is s to replace the mobo only to get the HARD drive in the first location of work

    This is my personal opinion...

  • NEW EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE IS NOT RECOGNIZED IN WINDOWS 8, BUT IS PRESENT IN DEVICE MANAGER AND IN DISK MANAGEMENT (NOT ME LEAVES NO ASSIGN A NEW DRIVE LETTER PATH)

I buy a new drive external hard 2T hard drive (plug-n-play) for my new Windows System. When I launch the device I have here a beep let me know the unit is plugged on my USB (3.0 or 2.0 as it is backward compatible) but when I go to my computer, the device does not appear, and as such I can't use it. When I go to the devices it is recognized and works apparently correctly. After some browsing on the net, I was told that I have to assign a drive letter. Thus entering disk management, the unit is, properly partitioned. However, when I right click on the appropriate partition gout the menu to change the disk path appears but is grayed out, and as such I can't use to assign a path drive letter. I checked to see if I run as administrator which I believe that I am by default when I first activated Windows. Is there anyone who has experienced this same problem or know a fix?

    Thank you very much

    Ron

Hi, I solved the problem with help. Because Device Manager wouldn't let me not use the format option I deleted the main partition by right click on the partition and then the wizard formatted the partition to NTFS, as I store a few large recording Daw. During the process of the wizard automatically assigned a letter from path of reader (e) but you can choose other. The drive was originally formatted FAT 32. The main problem I had was in the drop-down list that appears when I just clicked on the primary partition was options of Format and assign new drive letter have been greyed out... the only option left to delete the partition and reformat the drive. It's a new external so I didn't not lose all content.

  • External hard drive is not recognized after Windows Update

Original title: XP Pro wants to install driver for external hard drive that is Plug-and-Play

I think that using Windows Update can cause problems (unintentinally or not) for users of Windows XP.

In a series of accidents with an old computer and reinstall the XP Pro operating system, I discovered that MS Money installing only if it was made before the Windows updates.  (planned obsolescense?) The issue has to do with the removal of the registry AUTORUN file. INF for some new and improved files through Windows Update.  Before the updates, the file exists, and I could install MS money.  After updates, AUTORUN. Missing INF file of the registry.

Now, I encountered a new problem, and I think that it is also a result of Windows Update.  My external hard drive to IDE, that worked perfectly before on this computer (newer), is no longer recognized and want to reinstall the driver.

The problem is that it is a Plug-and-Play device, and no driver was needed before updates.  I read somewhere in my many attempts to find a solution that the MS Plug and Play system was replaced by a universal version of this feature (UPNP?)

It's on a more recent, computer replacement, which came not with a copy of the Windows XP Pro operating system, and I can't just reformat the hard drive and start all over again.

Someone else has encountered this, and if so, have you found a solution?

    Double Post suite-

Where is my external hard drive?

I'm under XP Pro on a Dell Optiplex PC with all the current Windows updates (SP3. Net4, etc..) and last month, I added a USB IDE hard drive. the hard disk enclosure is MASSCOOL, and I used a 250 GB Seagate Barracuda7800. The car worked perfectly until this week. I had the Windows Update critical update automaticlly value and security updates.

The hard drive has disappeared from "my computer." I tried to plug and unplug in different USB ports, restarted the computer, but continues to receive the "new hardware detected by saying me that new hardware has been detected and that I need to install the necessary driver.

The problem is that Seagate does not provide any driver for this drive, because it is supposed to be (and was so far) recognized by the Plug-and-Play of Windows XP software. The hard drive enclosure came with a mini CD, but this contains software to use the unit as a back-up, not for storage.

I can't understand that this change suddenly to believe that something in the Windows updates that have been installed recently changed the command structure, registry files or the drivers themselves.

I know this is possible, because I've seen what's happened to any program that relied on self. INF file that was originally part of XP. This resulted in programs like Microsoft Money and older versions of MS Office, not being able to be installed by those of us who are not 'technically lit.

I'm here in left field, or other people have had similar problems? And is anyone know how to solve this dilemma?

  • External hard disks do not appear in Windows Explorer

I have Win 7 SP1 64 bit Home Premium. Recently, four external drives are not recognized in Windows Explorer, but show in disk device manager &. They all work well and are recognized in another PC. I have tried different methods to solve the problem without success. I unplugged all the USB ports and the power supply for the discs off the PC. After a reboot, one by one, I turned on the readers and attached to their USB cable. Plug & Play worked well and I could open the files in the first drive. The player showed in disk management, the Manager of devices and Windows.  As soon as I installed the second disc, one disappeared from the Windows folder but remained in Mgt of disc and Device Manager. It's the same thing when I installed the readers of 2nd, 3rd and 4th... After the shutdown of the PC and turn it back on, none of the drives show in Windows, but has shown in managing disks and Device Manager.

I also tried Mr. Fixit. I uninstalled all the USB controllers. I activated turn on AutoPlay. Nothing has solved the problem! If she can be of any consequence or relevant to this problem, the internal drive in my PC now has been cloned from a smaller drive about a month ago. Any help to solve this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Dave

    Vignesh Hello,

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry for the late reply.

I suggest you try the following steps and check if it helps.

Remove the external hard drive of the computer.

    b. Click Start, type regedit in the start search box, and click regedit in the list programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.

    (c) in the navigation pane, search for, and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    d. in the pane of details, right click 'LowerFilters' and then click 'remove '.

    e. click 'Yes' when prompted.

    f. close the registry editor and restart the computer.

Note: Serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    I hope this helps.

As it has all the data from my old computer, it is rather important. Can someone provide help and advice on the way to a) the disc or b) transfer all data in the memory of the laptop

    Thank you very much

    Hello

The laptop supports 1 USB 3.0 port and 2 USB 2.0 ports.
I recommend you connect the external HARD drive to each port (USB 2.0) and USB3.0 just to check if it is not a compatibility problem. But generally, it shouldn't be a big problem to connect a USB 2.0 device to a USB 3.0 external.

However, it could also be that this external HARD drive needs more than usual 500mA power supplied by a USB 2.0 port. In this case, you must use a USB cable to Y to connect the HARD drive to two USB ports.
