Last updated has erased all the favourites and photos how to restore?

Today Thursday August 11 first thing this AM automatically a windows update took place. Once completed, the system did a restart and all the original settings were lost, all catalogued favorites were gone and all personal photos have disappeared as well. How to restore these items and how to prevent happening again?

Your help is appreciated with gratitude I am not tech savvy at all - it completely frustrates the heck out of me.

Thank you very much

Jeanette
