  I have a Satellite 5100-201 P4 - M 1.6 Ghz with 30 GB IDE HDD and 1024 MB of RAM. I use my 'old' Satellite only for music (the largest sound found on laptops!) but my HARD drive got a little weak.

  So my question is if there is no limit on the size of HARD drive for this laptop. I would buy an IDE 120 GB or 160 GB HDD at 5400 RPM and 8 MB Cache. If this is not possible, I can also take the 80 GB of HDD (another puts it on say works), but liked better!

  Hey Buddy,

  I think that the maximum capacity of the HARD drive would be 120 GB because the laptop has a limitation of LBA 28 bits. This means that only the hard disks up to 128 GB usable 120 GB would be the maximum. 5400 RPM and 8 MB cache are ok.

  I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the drives on those computers using an IDE to SATA adapter or something?  If I use the SATA drive as primary or secondary readers?  The bios will read the readers SATA IDE/PATA is used? I'll be limited up to 500 GB IDE/PATA drives? or the sky is the limit for SATA drives?

  Can I use a SATA USB hard drive for backups? and it is ' has a limit to the capacity?

  I have a Satellite M30E, the original HARD drive was vice. So, I bought a WD 250 gig.
  But I can't use the space behind 130 gb. (Win XP SP3).

  Is it possible to download a driver or something else? I extend the Bios and 1.7. But it takes no effect.

  A driver or an update of the BIOS will not help the only real solution (or not) is a use of the smaller HARD disk.

  As mentioned above, it seems you can use max 120 GB HDD.

• Extend the limits of hard drive

  I have an Acer Aspire 5720 with 80 GB hard drive. However, the reader is divided 32.5 on drive C and 32.5 GB on the D drive. My C drive is full and I would like to add an external hard drive. I need to extend the limit of drive C to allow me to load software for external hard drive. The other alternative is to load software for D drive which is empty, but I don't know how to do this. Can pleasae you help me.

  You cannot add a small part of D: to C:.

  It's all or nothing.

  -What are you doing this > if ever you have given on D: you save which data > then you totally delete the D: and D: partion becomes now unallocated space > then extend you C: into this unallocated space to have a larger partition.

  Acer does not work. Their recovery partition is hidden.

• PowerEdge SC1435 - size limits of HARD drive?

  I have a PowerEdge SC1435 and have just tried to replace a 2 * 500 GB WD drives with WD 2 * 1 TB drives and I get "Unknown device" for the two SATA Port A & SATA Port B.

  Disks SATA III & BIOS v2.2.3

  Am I missing something here? This server can support these discs? Must be updated to BIOS?

  The question is the SATA III drives.  These have not been supported up to the 10th generation of Dell servers.  They will appear as unknown devices, if the bios is updated.

  The SATA controller is not limited to a specific size, I think you could use a 1 TB 2.5 HDD. Should be recognized without big problems.

  If I understand you just upgrade you the BIOS to be able to use the 160 GB HARD drive in your notebook

  The BIOS supports a simple limitation of HARD drive and update will not help.

  The laptop supports load 20 GB, 30 GB, 40 GB or 60 GB HARD drive. Maybe you can use also a 80 GB HARD drive but I think that the 160 GB is simply too.

  Not being not aware of size limits of HARD drive for older readers, I just installed a new 3 TB drive HARD couple with a MB that has standard BIOS and isn't UEFI, nor has he a BIOS Mode Legacy. I can only use MBR, GPT not, when you configure the HARD disk and NTFS formatting. The operating system is Win 7 64 bit professional. This total 2048 GB of 3000 GB, the difference being unallocated. To get the 1548GB for E: data, I had to extend this Partition.

  Problem has :- After that Windows Update has added the updates of the system, I get a Notification that I am low on disk space. Survey shows that the E: Partition declined for some reason any. Q: How can it be rectified so that the Partition is not afraid after previously having been extended.

  B problem:- Q:- How the sector unaffected of this 3 TB drive can be used. I tried to use Seagate Disc Wizard for this purpose, but the unallocated space does not appear in Windows and Easeus Partition Manager disk management.

  Problem:- I don't know if this is related to the question above, but also after running Windows Update, library folders that I placed on the desktop disappear and must be restored.

• Change the hard drive of my Inspiron 9300

  This is my first post on this forum.

  Since July 2005, I have a Dell Inspiron 9300.

  As it is now out of warranty, I would change the hard drive in it.

  So I have a few questions, I'm looking for answers to if possible.

  I will present my questions in two different parts, the first is on the material, the disc itself and then the software thing.

  (A) material:

  (1) should what equipment I expect? I know it's a hard disk IDE, so I guess I have to get the same kind, in parallel ATA works?

  (2) I read here and there that the BIOS is limited to hard drives 120 GB, because more is not supported by the latter. You know a way to expand this capacity? (Only a medium chest!)

  (3) what kind of drives advise you? (Brand, speed, etc...)

  (4) I read on description hard drive 'IDE ATA 100' or ' IDE ATA 133 "in online shops, you know what it is?

  (B) software:

  (1) I would like to be sure that I will install the same things as when I do "Ctrl + F11", for the utility norton Ghost (want to keep this option!), which reinstall the entire computer with factory settings. I will get this during the installation with the recovery CD? Or you have a way to get this? (I want the same computer I have today, except a different HDD only!)

  (2) do you know how to create a D: partition, so that I have a part for programs and a part for the storage of the files?

  (3) how to install, is it: replace drive HARD; start the computer while starting on the recovery CD, Partition the disk HARD C: and D: (with the D: partitioned within the C: drive, I guess) and complete the installation of windows with the included Dell factory settings?

  I hope that I won't bore you with my questions, and you'll be able to answer. It would be nice, because I'm not a pro from the computer, only an amateur.

• Satellite P10: Question about the limits of upgrade of RAM and HARD drive

  What are the limits to upgrade my laptop Satellite P10? Currently, I use 1 GB of RAM (2 x 512) and I still have the original 60 GB 4200 RPM HARD drive. • User with limited XP Home Edition privleges can not access an external hard drive

  I can't set up an external hard drive in Windows XP Home Edition so that a user who has 'Limited' privleges can access.  The user receives the access denied message.  I tried to configure this by starting in safe mode.  I shared the unit with everyone.  If I'm the administrator user then it can access the drive.  The troubling question is that this system has been configured with the user having limited privleges as well as access to the external drive in the past.  I recently removed Norton antivirus and replaced by MS Security Essentials and I'm so glad I did.  But now it's problem arose.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  You probably just need to change permissions for access of the disk and/or subfolders.  The following article describes how to do this:

  The bad news is that this article was written for XP Pro and you have XP Home.  This means that the 'Security' tab, which is at the heart of the management of permissions is not present during the implementation of the properties of file or a folder on your computer. (Or y at - it an option to disable Simple file sharing).  The good news is that if you start your computer in safe mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when your computer starts) and log on as a user with administrator privileges, you can then obtain access to the security"" tab.  Once you have access to this tab, you can give "Everyone" permission to all of the disk if you wish.  Once you set the permissions as you like them, you can restart your machine in Normal mode.

Computer # 1: Presario S6300NX; originally with 512 MB of memory and 120 GB hard drive ATA parallel; a currently 1 GB of memory and installed a second hard drive 80 GB Parallel ATA. Computer #2: Presario SR1315CL; originally with 512 MB of memory and 160 GB hard drive ATA parallel; currently has 2 GB of memory and a 320 GB SATA hard drive installed. The hard drive in question is a Western Digital 500 GB SATA. Two of these computers would argue that hard drive? I can't find a coherent response to the question of the limits of the hard drive.

  AMM, since your computers were made in 2003/2004, the SATA ports will be first-generation (1.5Gbit / s).  I think that the hard drive will work, but it will not perform up to his capabilities (3 Gbps).
