linking the two hosts esx without switch

We have 2 esx host currently is ESX4, the other is ESX3.5 (sson be ESX4), we have a direct vswitch which is connected to a switch with 2 uplinks, everything works OK.

We have another 2 ports on each host that we use to create a unique vswitch used as an internal network. Here's the conencted directly to each other with 2 cables NOT connected to a switch. These NICS have negotiated the correct speed one look d OK, but if I put a virtual machine on each host attach it to the switch with internal uplinks and give them an IP address on the same beach that they cant ping each other

I know it's a strange config. I can not connect these "internal" uplinks to a switch are we charge £20 per month per 1 GB port which = £80 per month!

No idea why it does not work?

You may need to use a cable crossed in this scenario.  You should also be able to reach speeds of 1 GB, with a connecting Cat5e cable - I would check that it's been wired correctly!

  • Linking the two vSwitches in ESX

    Hello

I have a question.  I have attached the script with this post.   To set breiefly,

    (1) I'm having an ESX host with a single physical network adapter VMNIC0

    (2) I created 2 vSwitches with the default.  So totally 3 vSwitches it

(2.1) vSwitch0 - dedicated for the Service Console and VMKernel and connected to VMNIC0 for external connectivity N/W

vSwitch1 (2,2) - two virtual machines are connected over

vSwitch2 (2,3) - two virtual machines are connected.

Please note that the 2 vSwitches (vSwitch1 & 2) are not connected with each other and also unrelated to physics N/W adapters

    (3) the two VMS in vSwitch1 can communicate with each other without any problem

    (4) the two VMS in vSwitch2 can communicate with each other without any problem

    My Question is;

How can I connect these 2 vSwitches (vSwitch1 & 2) with each other so that two vSwitches virtual computers can communicate with each other

This question may seem very simple to most of you... I understand... but I don't know how to do this.  Thanks for any help/entries in this...

    Thank you.

    vSwitches cannot be connected together.

If these clients must communicate with each other, they must be on a vSwitch. The traffic between two vSwitchws must pass through the physical wire. So you have at least two NETWORK interface card to connect two vSwitches as a teddy bear can only be connected to a vSwitch.

You can always separate the guests using different port groups.

  • Linking the two switches SF300-8 and gvrp

After passing the age trying to propagate VLAN one SF300 to another, I think that I finally did it.  It seems that we must implement the GVRP Protocol on both sides of the trunk AND manually create the VLAN on the slave switch.  Now I can ping machines on the two switches that share the same VLAN successfully.

However; If I try and ping a machine on the passage of the slave from outside in the VLAN, which is a connection routed the master switch, it fails, succeeds the ping of a machine on the main switch.

    What I am doing wrong?

Hi Nigel, GVRP is basically a terrible (and useless) Protocol.

GVRP not to dispose of anything, unless it is predefined to what it can affect, the manually fresh General requirements is greater than the configuration comes actually port.

Configuring you mentioned basically tells me that you built manually the trunk as vlan 1 UNTAG, tag 11 and 42. The GVRP Protocol should do it for you if it is properly implemented.

To work successfully the port GVRP must send the GVRP join messages, the interface of the receiver must be configured to receive the join messages and then the database of VLAN switch advertising must have these VLANS constructed/defined manually as they are underway in the messages...

If you need using the configuration, do not hesitate to post what is your goal, I'm sure I or someone can help you if you provide a network, the schema and configuration files.

  • Create a network spanning hosts esx without uplink?

We have an ESX cluster consisting of two physical hosts. We have a switch distributed between these two hosts. We need to create a network that is not extinguished through uplinks but rather a local subnet or a VLAN or a LAN on the distributed switch. Is this possible and if so, how?

  • Data store mobile (vm machine) 1 host to another with the help of free hypervisor on the two hosts

I have 2 hosts running ESXi 4.1 (free version of the hypervisor). Both have their own data store locally.

I need to move a VM machine (data store) of a host for the other local data store. There best way to do this with the free hypervisor?

    Hello

Using VMWare Converter standalone 4.0, it's a free VMWare tool exactly for situations like yours. I use the conversion tool to transfer my virtual machines much between different hosts of ESXi and also founded to convert ESXi VMs to VMWare Server/Workstation and vice versa.

All you need to do is turn off the virtual machine and make sure that it is in the inventory of the ESXi host source; Use the VMWare Infrastucture option while selecting the source and the destination of VMWare Converter Standalone, you will be asked to provide identification name and connection of your ESXi source servers and destination information.

VMWare Converter Standalone is a brialliant tool, its very flexible in that you can resize your hard drive, use a provisioning, edit all devices.

Hope this information useful for you.

  • The intention to replace the current host ESX, AMD or Intel?

So I'm looking to replace our current Dell PE 2950 servers with processors Xeon 5300 (2 Proc per server) with recent hardware components.  I'm watching the current models of Dell and trying to decide which server to go with.  I narrowed down it to the R710 (2 socket), R715 (2 socket), or R810 (4 socket, but will only use 2).  Here's a quick breakdown of the construction on:

    R710 - 2 5670 proc (6 core to 2.93 GHz), 96 GB of Ram, dual PS, etc.

    R810 - 7560 2 Proc (8 Core 2.26 GHz), of 96 GB of Ram, daul PS, etc.

licensing for vSphere Advanced so I think we're ok up to 12 processor cores

Right. Then you can consider CPU with lots of carrots

Who would have a problem with the new view of AMD processor servers?

No. VM files are independent on the type of processor.

The AMD configuration looks very nice... If it is also cheaper to go on it.

The R710 and R810 with only 2 CPU are quite the same... so (except special offers) do not consider the R810 at all.

  • VMotion on two hosts

We have two hosts and are currently using the same network/vswitch vmotion and vm management.

I understand that it is best to separate the network for vmotion management.

    (1) may simply run a straight cable between two hosts?

    (2) should the vmotion switch be in a separate network?

Based on the number of physical network interface cards in your host, instead of connecting the two hosts directly without switch, allows to isolate the vMotion traffic and management VLAN and given that you're going to use a VLAN different you will need a different subnet (network).

  • How would recreate the pagefile to a Windows 2008 virtual computer running on a host ESX 3i?

As the subject says, I'm looking for a way to do this.  I inherited the environment of another group and it is very small, but it performs ESX 3i on the two hosts and Vcenter version 2.5 (Infrastructure) is a bit old.  5 of 6 VM are operational, however, the 6th when turned on will not get 40% full, but then it will fail to stating that is not a swap file.  Now, normally it is not a swap file, because they are created or deleted dynamically whenever a virtual computer is powered on one of the hosts.  It's quite strange.

In the new versions / environments, there seem to be ways to recreate exchange capacity easily, but which doesn't seem to be the case here.  I don't think it's a process lock as the two hosts have restarted to clear HA agent / editions of the resource.  My guess is this has happened has been one of the hosts could not reproduce any more process for some reason any and when the VM problem has been powered down to try to erase some, the problem occurred.  Either that, or there are unreadable sectors in the data store, and perforated in this swap file black...

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to solve the problem.  Any input would be welcome.

    Thank you!

    All,

Thanks for the suggestions, but I solved the problem.  What needed to be done was to remove the virtual machine of the inventory and then re-create it as a new virtual machine under the cluster of the same name, same settings and have it use its 2 existing virtual disks.  For some stupid reason, once this is done, he managed to turn on normally and now runs without problem.

I'm not necessarily happy that this solution because it does not really help understand me what underlying the problem actually was, but I guess I can live with that.  The reason why I have not tried it earlier, is that I was afraid the vmdk would be replaced and I wanted to keep the existing information.  However, someone I work with was certain that they had done before, and that she maintained the pre-existing data, even in this older version, so I finally tried.

in any case, thanks for the support, and if someone can glean some root causes of the problem based on the solution I have just given, that would be helpful.

  • vSphere high availability 'Élection' fails at 99% 'operation timed out' to 1 of the 2 hosts

    Hello

We had a system with 1 host ESXi 5.1 with local disks.

Now, we install redundancy by adding a 5.5 U2 ESXi host and a device of vCenter 5.5.

After having installed and any addition to vcenter, we went the ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 U2 ESXi. The SAN works correctly (vMotion works on the own NETWORK card).

Now, if I try to activate the high availability, both servers will install the HA Agent and start "Election".

All the warehouses of data (4) on the SAN are chosen for the HA heartbeat, response of isolation is "keep it turned on" by default.

A server will always be this process done, and the other will keep "elect" until it reaches 100% and errors on the operation "election timed out.

I've seen this problem on both servers, so I think that the 'master' elected does not have the problem, only the "slave".

I have checked these items and executed, but not worked:

VMware KB: Reconfiguration HA (FDM) on a cluster fails with the error: operation timed out

-All the MTU has been set at 1500

VMware KB: VMware High Availability Configuration fails with the error: unable to complete the configuration of the ag of HA...

-the default gateway is not the same on the two hosts, but I fixed that. There is no itinerary changes. HA the setting is "leave power." After correction and deactivation/reactivation HA, the problem is always the same.

VMware KB: Check and reinstall the correct version of the VMware vCenter Server agents

-J' ran "Reinstall ESX host management agents and HA on ESXi" agent of HA, and I checked that it was uninstalled and reinstalled during the reactivation of HA.

    CP /opt/vmware/uninstallers/VMware-fdm-uninstall.sh/tmp
    chmod + x /tmp/VMware-fdm-uninstall.sh
    /tmp/vmware-FDM-uninstall.sh

I did this for two guests. This fix makes the problem of the election and I was still able to run a HA test successfully, but when after this test, I turned off the 2nd Server (in order to test the PA in the other direction), HA has no failover to 1 and everything remained low. Best regards

    Joris

P.S. I had problems with cold Migration during the implementation of the SAN. After setting up all (vMotion, ESX upgrade), these problems have disappeared.

When you search for this error, I came to this article: KB VMware: VMware vCenter Server displays the error message: unable to connect to the host

And this cause could make sense, since the server vCenter changed and IP addressing has been changed during the implementation.

However, in the file vpxa.cfg, the < hostip > and < serverip > is correct (verified by using https://< hostip > / home).

Tried this again today, no problem at all.

P.P.S. I have set up several of these systems from scratch in the past without problem (if it is an 'upgrade').

OK, so the problem is solved.

I contacted Dell Pro Support (OEM offering the license) and they checked the logs (fdm.log) and found that the default IP gateway could not be reached.

The default gateway is the ip address by default host isolation, used by HA.

Because it is an isolated production system, the front door provided proved only for future purposes.

Now, I've changed the default gateway address of management on the switch plugged into both hosts, namely the ping requests.

    This solved any problem.

  • vMotion fails at 9% - Source host cannot connect to the destination host

    Hello

I wonder if someone could shine any light on why vmotion fails to occur between an ESXi host who has just been restarted, in order to test HA. I have the following configuration:

    3 x ESXi5 DL360 G7s with two 4-way NIC

    VSphere Vcenter 5

1 x cluster configured for DRS HA

    2 x Procurve 2910 - 24G

The switches are not connected to each other.

Both switches are configured as such:

    1894901.png

All ports are not marked. NO PLEASE, no routing

Each host vMotion vSwitch is connected to two switches by 1 x 1 GB nic

I configured a vswitch on each host of vMotion. There are two ports vmkernel with two IPS on the same subnet. There are two vmnic attached to the vSwitch. On each port, a Vmic is configured to be active while the other is unused. I enabled frames on the vSwitch and 2910 switches. A VLAN has been configured on the two predisposees 2910 for vmotion with frames and defined traffic on "no label". I can successfully vmkping all the ip s vmotion on all ESXi hosts. However, when I test HA by stopping an ESXi host, when I restart the ESXi host I am unable to vmotion in that ESXi host. When I test vmkping I find that the host rebooted can only vmkping itself and no other host can vmkping it. Vmotion attempt fails on 9% and errors with the source host cannot connect to the destination host. If I restart the two switches of 2910 I can then perform a vMotion and the vmkping is a success.

    Help, please?

    Thank you

Hello Simon, I think it's a good option to do, since the hash IP load balancing is a bit special and really requires both interfaces to connect to the same physical switch, which must also have a specific configuration. If you like the results after the new changes.
