Linux and satellite M70

It's just to prevent anyone who is interested posted...

I managed to get linux (stable) to work on the M70. I used Mandriva 2006. Sound, LAN, wireless LAN all seem to work well. The only problem with the graphics - it runs in 1024 x 768 with no support to opnGL.

It would be nice if he had run at its native resolution of 1280 x 800 but im having trouble getting the correct synchronization (refresh vertical horizontalm) for display.

If anyone has any info on this please let me know.

Asif

Hello Asif

This is great news for many users who want to install Linux on their units. I hope that you will also fix the problem with the graphics. Have you tried to find somewhere driver for graphics card? I'm not 100% sure, but it must be an Intel, one.

    Hello!

I bought the Epox bluetooth dongle. It also manages the bluetooth version 2.0 and 30 metres range.
I use it via battery Microsoft BT who was already installed by default on my laptop Satellite m70-144.

I think that my BT is not compatible with the Toshiba BT stack, or? Why should I use some other stack as stack windows? Are there differences between the batteries?

Can I use my Nokia 6260 as a modem via BT. that was what I wanted.

First of all, I tried to install software from toshiba is delivered with epox adapter but failed every time to install on my computer toshiba laptop. He was unable to install all the drivers and Setup was a loop... I also tried the most recent software (downloaded from www epox site) but the same effect.

Really amazing was that this installation has worked well with my laptop to another, but not with Toshiba.

By the way could someone tell me what is PAN and why should I use?

    Hello Vincent

In my opinion, you can use what you want, and no one forced to use software from Toshiba. If you want you can use the battery Windows BT.

I have Motorola mobile phone and use the Toshiba BT software. It works perfectly. The configuration is pretty easy.

With PAN (or maybe PIN) number you average on key to past of identification for matching between laptop and mobile phone?

  • Re: Linux on Satellite M70-181 - recommendations?

    Hello

as Windows XP support will end next April and my old Satellite still works
I wonder if anyone has any experience with Linus on this type of laptop.

Are there recommendations regarding verson (Ubuntu, SUSE, Debian,...).

Are there drivers available? (impossible to find anything on the Toshiba site).
    Thank you

    Hello

This question should probably be divided into 2 sections.

    (1) stability and security.
It's always a good idea to stick to a branch that is stable and continue to release updates for the given distribution.

Look at Debian or RedHat (CentOS is a free 'clone' of RedHat).
Debian and RedHat (CentOS) support their distributions of life or a long time (RedHat) or via a rolling update mechanism (Debian) release.

    (2) performance
Having a unit of the old school as the M70 really forces you to look at what desktop environment you should look.

You must avoid KDE4, Gnome3, cinnamon and Unity (specific to Ubuntu). They all look nice and have fancy features but will be (too) heavy load for your old unit to carry.
Search for rather Mate, LXDE, office environments focused on XFCE for a balanced experience.
If you want to go for a very lean office there are a number of choices such as Openbox and other similar environments.

So to sum up - the choice of the distribution is not very easy because it is a decision (at least) 2-step.
Security/stabilty and choice of desktop environment where the last of them will have the most impact on the memory footprint and processor.

Here's a place to start looking for your desktop of choice:

This is a very good site for verification of distributions:

  • LINUX and satellite L20

    Hello
I have a TOSHIBA Satellite L20 - 182 notebook (PSL2XE) and I want to change my OS from Windows to Ubuntu Linux.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a drivers for my laptop that runs on Ubuntu Linux.

So my question is - where can I find the drivers for my laptop to Ubuntu?

    Concerning

Linux not is not supported on laptops Toshiba especially not on laptops shipped with Microsoft operating systems pre-installed, so that you will not be able to find the drivers on a single place.
I recommend you to visit a few Linux forums and chat with others who have installed Linux on Toshiba laptops.

I guess you can get useful advice and maybe links where to download the drivers you need.

  • Where are drivers Vista for Satellite M70

    Hi, guys

    Toshiba recommends vista :)
But so far, they have not submitt a driver (vista version) for M70 series
If there is anything new, please let know me.

    GUYS BYE

    Hello

Yes Toshiba recommends Vista with new laptops capable perhaps Vista. Your Vista M70 is capable? You have capable sticker of Vista on it?

I M70 - 159 and there is no Vista capable sticker. Last month I installed Vista Ultimate on it and it works perfectly. Only problem I have is not enough RAM. M70 has 512 MB only and with more RAM, I am sure that Vista will work much better.

In the end, I can say that I have a very good and positive experience with Vista and Satellite M70 - 159. Now my question: what is your problem?

    Hello

How did you create the partition, and you have created the partition for the use of Linux?
The fact is that you cannot use a similar kind of partition for the Windows operating system.

PS: Unfortunately, Toshiba doesn't support the Linux operating system and you will find all the drivers Toshiba for this OS.

  • Satellite M70-131 Linux temperature controller

    Hi all.
I just got my hands on a satellite m70-131 and I am having trouble with Linux temperature controller.
Anyone know what sensors it runs? The SMBus is detected but just lm_sensors detects any sensors.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you all!

    Hello

Sorry, it failed for me to find all the details about this sensor, but I found this useful page on the monitoring of applications for Linux of temperature:

  • Satellite M70: access to the data of temperature and fan

While we did not have these problems with other laptops, we found a way to access the data of temperature and fan on a Satellite M70.

A friend has tried this on Linux but have failed and also with XP I do not find a way to read data (current temperature of the CPU, or State of the fan-cooler).

Given that I noticed several irregularities when using (the fan is that the CPU load is very minimal), work sometimes is going to be a little uncomfortable.

Thanks for the advice / gw

I put t know if it will help you, but in this ad, someone managed to run a control application of the material.

Maybe it will work on your laptop.
But to my knowledge Toshiba doesn't support this request and I'm not sure it will work.
    Anyway, try it's free ;)

  • My Satellite M70 no longer works, and caps button flashes

My problem was explained in the title. I just want to know if there is a problem or not. I work on Linux and windows XP, but the problem can happen in the BIOS.
    Thank you, Vivien.
If you need more information, please ask me :)
PS: it's the Satellite M70, and I changed the RAM

    Hello

I'm afraid that you have to be a little more specific than one that's a little wave... but now that you mention that you have changed the RAM maybe this is related to the question of Mr. is your RAM speed appropriate for your laptop? (Example to 400 or 533 MHz, regardless of the speed is indicated for your product). Because if your RAM is at the wrong speed, or at a higher speed (for example, 667 MHz, which happened with me) the computer can crash/blue screen/go crazy.

In fact, now I remember that my flash CAPS LOCK button too, because of the bad RAM or Aries do not correctly inserted. I recommend to check the speed of your RAM and make sure that you have inserted the right type, RAM speed and you have inserted it correctly

    I hope this helps.

  • Satellite M70 164 - screen freezes and goes black, overheating

    Hello world! :)

Recently my Satellite m70-164 started to freeze after only a few minutes of work. The picture on the screen freezes, and a few seconds later, it becomes completely black.
The computer doesn't even have time to warm up, and it's not stop... It's just the screen that freezes and becomes so black. I have to reset the computer by pressing the power button. (I write from another computer).

I noticed that working time reduced whenever I have reset the computer and after some time it freezes even though I am in the BIOS settings, so I don't think it's an OS problem.
Even if the computer does not have time to warm up, this suggests it might be a heat problem.
So I tried pointing a fan this is low (a big, like the ones we use in the summer), and it works without problem!

With the fan facing these, I reinstalled Windows - so no Virus.
Laptop fan * not * continue to operate as it is overheating.
The fan runs and it is not clogged as I've cleaned.

So if anyone has the same problem, or ideas, please respond!
    (And sorry for my English)
    Thanks in advance! : D

    Hey Buddy,

I agree with you. In this case, even in the BIOS, that it has nothing to do with Windows or a Virus. In this case, it seems to be a hardware malfunction

But before contacting an authorized service provider to diagnose what part is the cause, clean your laptop using a jet of compressed air. This should be done from time to time (every 4 months) and, therefore, it of not necessary to disassemble the laptop.

FN with F10 keys shows no reaction.
    Check all the drivers.
But cursor and escape keys does not.

As far as I know, FN + F10 or FN + F11 active integrated keyboard and cursor control keys.

Satellite M70 is a fairly old machine and I do not remember which driver may be responsible for this control. Try to reinstall the Toshiba Accessibility or FN-esse utility. Maybe this will help.

I had M70 long ago, but I've never used this option.

  • Re: Satellite M70-168: new HD and OEM license

    Hello

My Satellite is out of warranty...
Original HD (80 gb) broke, and it is impossible to find the same HD.
    I'll replace it with a HGST Travelstar 5 K 750 HTS547575A9E384 - HD - 750 GB - SATA-300.

    1. I think that 2 Sata (sata 300) is compatible, but work to only at speed of sata 1 (sata 150). Is this a problem?
    2. restore the operating system on the hard drive with the DVD created in the first inning, license is OEM allow this work, or block the restoration?

Sorry for my bad language... Frenchie Frenchie's

    Thank you very much.

Satellite M70 is old but good laptop and with the new drive HARD and clean OS preinstalled, it should work well. I had it a long time ago and if I m remembering well there connector SATA HDD SATA HDD can be used.

I think 750GB can be too much and I don t know if it will work OK. Used mine M70 with 320 GB of HARD drive.
You can test it, but please post comments.
    > Do to restore the operating system on the hard drive with the DVD created in the first round
You can use the original picture but if I m remembering well that old book has been delivered with the recovery disk (WXP Home) and I put t know what you have created.
    > OEM license allow this work, nor block the restoration
As far as I know, the license of the sticker belongs to the recovery image and you cannot use it for the activation of the operating system. If you use original recovery DVD that you got with your laptop you don t need. preloaded will be activated automatically.

I have updated the BIOS and the driver of the screen but always comes back.

Have you tried an external monitor on the laptop?
It would be important to make sure if it s a display or the motherboard problem.

  • Satellite M70-309 and info on the recovery cd

    Hello!
I'm Italian, I hope you understand me...

So, I bought Satellite M70-309, fantastic for laptop and I have a question about recovery cd...

In this cd there is always a 'clean' of Windows XP or XP + drivers + software (ghost image)?
Because I'd like to partition the disk and clean install s.o.

    What can I do?

    Thank you!
    Ciao!

    Hello

On the restore CD, you will find the image files.
Image files contain the Windows operating system, Toshiba drivers and utility and some additional example OneNote, WinDVD or some burning applications programs.

If you want to install a clean Win operating system you need to buy the original Windows operating system and then you can install your required applications.
But for me it makes no sense, because if you want to use the full features of this magnificent phone you need all Toshiba drivers and utilities.
If you don't need some applications you can simply remove it from the BONE.
