Local disk C has the least space, where the Local D drive has much more space: problem is drive C starts instead of because...

I had to reinstall XP. Before reinstallation, D drive was the drive started on my computer and I have not had any problems with space. Obviously I screwed up letting it keep the partitioned drive or what I had to do at some point, because after reinstalling XP C drive the drive that begins (C has no space and D wants everything as before). Now, I don't have enough space to download programs, I need to work from. In fact, I don't have enough room to do anything! C drive only has 7. something GB on it compared with with 30 0r 32 GB!

How can I get the D drive and do what is now drive C? Alternatively, I can change somehow D drive where all downloads to go and work from there anyway? I don't know how to change where a download will. Can someone please help me out here because I'm way behind with work; cannot afford professional maintenance COMP.; and have no idea what to do.

Hello

You may need to back up important data on the computer and and then format the D; drive to remove all the installation files and creates the disk space.

Also I suggest you perform a disk cleanup on the computer. To get the procedure you can refer: Description of the tool in Windows XP Disk Cleanup: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312

And uninstall unwanted computer programs, see: remove programs you don't need more: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/removeprog.mspx

  • Run Disk Defragmenter has released more than 30 GB of free space!

I'm not used to run Disk Defragmenter Windows very often, but in recent weeks I have been through the very large import of my cd collection process on iTunes. My 'C' drive has a capacity of 222GB and I was at 9.68 GB of free space. I ran WDD but after 18 hours, he had still not finished! So I decided to cancel defragmentation, and after checking my 'C' drive, I found to my great astonishment that I now had 42.8 GB of free space! Then, I downloaded the DiskDefrag Auslogics free and running. She performed in a few minutes and showed the Windows defragmentation had done most of the work but for some reason any had not finished. Anyone know why?

I have decided to disabled Windows Defrag and will use in the future, the Auslogics version he gives information about the status of the defragmentation and seems to be much more effective and faster.

However, I am very surprised by the amount of free space that freed the defragmentation process. I searched on various forums of pc and other posters have said the complete opposite to my own experience. The common consensus seems to be that defraging reduces the amount of free space on a drive rather than increase it!

There also seems to be a difference of opinion on the amount of free space should be left on a hard drive to allow the computer to function effectively. I was a little more than 4% before I defragmented but I saw messages advising that we should let betweeen 10% and up to 50% (which seems to me to be silly!)

I would be grateful for any help anyone can give me, in particular, why the defragmentation released (in my case) as much free space.

A common mistake in logic. You assume that two things are related, because they are close in time.

Defrag does not change the amount of disk space. It only increases or decreases the free space or used.

Windows defragmentation runs every three days and optimizes the program and load the system boot. This is not controllable. It is also not a defragmentation of data file.

Using another Defragmenter will fight with Windows.

NTFS (and FAT32) resist fragmentation. Most fragmented files are log files and will fragment 1 second after defragmentation.

Windows only writes files where there are a lot of space to write prevention of fragmentation. Do not fragment the files that do not change. Disk cache makes the fragmentation irrelevent.

Any recommendation on the free space are based on the best estimate on the way an average person uses a computer. Lack of free space does not work computer until it has zero. However, most people like to save their work and some Windows watchdog is going spastic, just before that you can't do anything.

As to why you have noticed a change in the use of the disc.

    1. system restore - this could be it.

2 disk Cleanup - it will take place in itself is space is extremely low

3 log files are created, deleted, written, etc.

    4. Windows automatically repairs physical disk errors. If defrag was having problems, you can check there is no car repair files.

It's a way see what may have disk operations occurred.

  • The cloned hard drive file recovery?

Hi I need to know, I had my old hard drive blue screen error frequently, my IT guy said to replace hard drive again, it changed and kept the old drive with him, after 1 1/2 years, I've wanted an important delete file to recover old hard disk, I took the old hard drive from this GUY I could not this file, I got to know that the computer scientist has cloned that old hard drive in another new hard drive, is possible to retrieve the deleted files in my old drive hard new cloned hard drive

    Hope you understand my question,

    Hi Raghu,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand the concern to recover files from hard drive which has already abolished. For now, I'll ask to refer to suggestions provided by Linney, MVP, in the thread below link and check if they help.

Recover deleted files from external hard drive

Suggestions may be applicable to Windows 7 as well

Note: using third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

  • need help syncing replacement of the external hard drive for Lightroom

    Hello Lightroom community.

I've exhausted my research and am now seeking help. Please direct me to this information in the forum if it exists. Also, I am a novice and while I am learning lightroom quickly with all my time spent in forums and online videos, I am limited in my understanding of how it all works.

Problem: I store my Lightroom Catalog and backups on my portable MacBook Pro. I use two external hard drives to store all my images and store my time machine backups. My external hard drive (1-hand) and my external hard drive (2-Back-up) were also well synchronized with the catalog and recognized by lightroom when I edited the pictures. I mainly used the DHM 1-hand when I edited, especially when I went. Last month, my main 1 - EHD died and was unrecoverable. I got lucky that my backup drive (DHM 2-back-up) has always had the images and changes.

In order to quickly save my 'JEP 2-back-up"to a new 'Hand' work external hard drive replacement, I dragged and dropped the backup disk images to the new"Main"drive so that I can sleep at night. This gave me the peace of mind that all of my images and backups time machine were now on two disks again. (Note: the new ' hand ' disk has a different name. ") Is this important?)

How can I get Lightroom to recognize and sync with my new drive and photos? Is there a simple way to do this or do I have to restart the process from the beginning? If so, where should I start? I'm afraid to attempt without some advice/suggestions from the experts.

Thank you for any information, you can pass it along! Please let me know what I can provide additional information.

Side note: when I looked to import the images of the new 'Hand' DHM - although this would make duplicates-Lightroom recognized that there are duplicates. So, where is the missing link?

If you can rename the new primary drive to match exactly the name of the previous main drive, that should correct the problem.

If this is not the case, then you want to open your Lightroom Catalog and then reconnect the top-level folder that contains your pictures by right-clicking on this top-level folder and then to find Missing folder pointing Lightroom on the equivalent top level on your new drive main folder. The details are described here (see Figure 4): Adobe Lightroom - find folders and files moved or missing

Side note: re-import never corrects this problem, it only makes it worse. Never use to reimport into solution in Lightroom.

  • Help create the VM hard drive external

    Hello

I am trying to create a virtual machine from a hard drive that was in my laptop.  It is a 80G drive and XP Media Edition installed with a recovery partition separate.  (Gateway)  I searched a few threads and continuum has a very useful post:

    Hello
by far the simplest to do that involves a few steps

    support:
do it on a computer that has the installed desktop - allows you to call this machine adminhost
the portable hard drive is used inside a USB connected to this computer box

    Carefully follow them

    1. open the adminhost diskmanagement

    • find the usb drive and note that numero_disque uses it - say for example it uses disk3
    • Right-click on each partition and remove the driveletters are subsequently assigned

    2. open VMware Workstation as an administrator!

    • create a new virtual machine using option "I will install later.
    • Select Windows 7 guestOS
    • assign the same amount of RAM as the old laptop used to have
    • store the virtual machine in a path with enough free disk space - Let's E:\vms\laptop-import
    • When the virtual machine is created will NOT start
    • Remove the hard drive that has been created with the wizard
    • Add a new hard drive - select disk physical option and select the numero_disque looked you up in step 1
    • Select use "full disk" and save the vmdk as E:\vms\laptop-import\rawdisk.vmdk
    • do not start the virtual machine and close the station work

    3. open a cmd as administrator

    • CD in the WS install directory such as C:\programfiles\vmware\vmware-workstation
    • Enter vmware - vdiskmanager.exe - a help screen should be displayed
    • now type vmware - vdiskmanager.exe - r E:\vms\laptop-import\rawdisk.vmdk t 0 E:\vms\laptop-import\new.vmdk
    • a process of conversion should start now - let the finsih - this may take some time

    4. open my computer again

    • Open the virtual machine and modify virtual hardware
    • Delete rawdisk.vmdk and add new.vmdk instead

  • When the wizard has completed successfully, you are finished

Wow - this XP is not really to be converted.
It has set up a strong resistance ;-)

  • Satellite L300D-10 q recovery DVD Can be used on the replacement hard drive?

    Hello

I was wondering if the DVD Recovery allows to install Vista on a replacement hard drive? The original hard drive is too small at 160 GB contain all the files that I use the virtual operating system image. The disk hard 500 GB of replacement must be large enough for that.

The reason why I need to Vista, it's that the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 8.04.1 and 8.10, cause the fan to run at full speed all the time which is very annoying. So for the moment I can only use Linux in a virtual machine.

I intend to stay with Toshiba, though, as my two latest portable Toshiba Satellite a PII and a PIII still work today, and both have had Linux on them.

Now, back to my story, I intend to remove the existing laptop, hard drive use DVD recovery to install to external USB 500 GB disk, replace the existing hard drive in starting up the laptop from the USB and copy my data overall. Before you reformat the old drive as external storage, I will replace in the laptop with 500 GB drive and the test so I can boot from the new drive.

Key question will be the change of equipment, i.e. the new hard disk of 500 GB prevent Vista to install or activate?

    Thank you very much

Vista itself can handle huge HARD drive sizes, but the question is: the recovery disc will be happy with 500 GB? The laptop will recognize 500 GB?

I think it will work very well, because the new laptops are released with 320 HARD drive. 500 GB is not far.

Its a few trial and error unless anyone here has tested a disc 500 GB HARD themselves.

  • How to reinstall it on the new hard drive

Inspiron One my 2330 client hard disk is dead. Obviously, it will not be a recovery partition on the new HARD drive that I installed. Because the Microsoft Windows 8 activation key is embedded in the BIOS, how will I be able to activate the operating system if I install a DVD if there is no recovery logic to tell the installation routine where the key?

    Thank you!

The product key is embedded in the UEFI BIOS. It will be automatically entered 10 TH2 Windows installation media. If you are prompted for a product key however then you have used the wrong edition of the the Windows 10 TH2 so must use Windows 10 TH2 only language:

Note Microsoft indicated the end date for the free update is in ~ 3 days, you will need to clean install Windows 10 TH2 and activating online before this date.

  • Rename the internal floppy drives.

    Hello again,

    And thanks for your help!

As previously mentioned, I want to do is change the title to:

    My book (d),

    Hello Osprey4

As directed by my previous post, I'm only changing the name of my book (d) for the DVD-RAM (d).

My book (D :) currently opens the floppy drive in slot 1.

All we need to change is the name, not the path by car.

All the paths and the record/playback fine reader,
and access from the shortcuts on the desktop or workstation without any problem.

Here's what I've done so far:

As you can see, there is no option rename.

and clicking the name opens the location.

^ So I went to disk management, and the two floppy drives are not show.

Is this the place where I can change the name only (not the path by car)?

    Gerry,

If this happened when you replaced the two DVD players?

  • BOOTMGR is missing message when you try to load the operating system on the new hard drive. How do I get past this?

I had a bad hard drive and replaced. When I turn it on now to load the ISO of Windows 7 disc, I get the message: BOOTMGR is missing / Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart.

I tried, but it just comes back and won't look at the CD/DVD drive to start loading Windows 7. What should I do?

Check your BIOS settings, the CD / DVD drive must be set as the 1st boot device, then the hard disk as the 2nd boot device. Exit and save your changes in the BIOS. Insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart the computer, then you should see a message "press any key...". "to start from the DVD, press the space bar and wait for Windows to load from DVD, then follow the instructions in my first post.
