Long distance vMotion, vCenter on 6.0, hosts on 5.5

Has anyone tried this and is this still possible? We are in the middle of all our sites with a new architecture VMware 6.0 refreshing and a big reason is that we want to use vMotion long distance to migrate workloads as we slowly consolidate form 3 to 1 data centers. So far, we have deployed a device VCSA 6.0 and 2 MCS in 2 data centers. We have not yet upgraded 5.5 still hosts.

I'm not request anyone to test this in their environment or to do our work for us, since we are in the middle of the project and the work that I type, looking for feedback as I'm sure that someone else has tried this scenario in the wild before and well that my google-fu did not surface this answer again. I'm just curious to know if you need to upgrade your managed host of esxi 5.5 computers. 6.0 to perform the vMotion improved long-distance over WAN using link lniked mode OR if the vCenters being on 6.0, added in the same domain SSO and improved bound mode is enough. We would be able to ignore the upgrade about 25 guests because we have not deployed yet VUM so fingers crossed.

Thanks to anyone who can provide comment to my first question of communities.

You move between vCenter also? If so, the hosts of ESXi and vCenter must be at version 6.0. See the requirements on the cross vCenter vMotion: Cross vCenter Server VMware vSphere 6.0 vMotion requirements (2106952). VMware KB

To enable the migration through the server vCenter instances, your environment must meet these requirements:

  • The source and destination and ESXi hosts vCenter server instances must be running version 6.0 or later.

Anyway, you can upgrade one host in each vCenter and use this host to start the migration.

  • Long Distance vMotion

    Hi guys,.

Please help me to gain some knowledge here, because I'm really very confusing. I understand (or understand) vMotion at the same level physics site, i.e. all hosts to connect to the same VLAN for vMotion and all guests can see the same LUN storage... you can vMotion should be child's play...

But I really struggle with the concept of long Distance vMotion... that is another physical site where the same VLAN may not exist and indeed the same storage LUN cannot exist... can someone please (please) explain how this concept would work or how such an activity of vMotion can be implemented? vMotion for me means being able to move a virtual machine from one host to another without any downtime of the virtual machine, that is why I am struggling to understand the concept of a vMotion of long Distance with different networks and storage on different site.

    Confused Dryv

so effectively you're saying we need meet the pre-reqs that apply to the creation of a vMSC inorder to get long distance vMotion to work?

Yes, all requirements fundamental clusters as for vMSC applies here as well. It's the same cluster stretched with a more 'cool' name implies support for distances longer than a metropolitan area.

-What is vmotion without shared storage? This implies that you need not shared storage for vMotion activities? is it still possible? I hear this a lot... the term sharing nothing vmotion I hear people throw a lot!

vSphere 5.1 presents the vMotion (vMotion "reinforced") turf, which is basically storage vMotion and vMotion of calculation at the same time on the network. You have no need of storage shared between source and destination host but you still need to layer 2 for VM networks and vmkernel connectivity. Of course, it will take much more time than a regular vMotion with shared storage because you must copy the entire VM disks. See here for more information:

    http://wahlnetwork.com/2012/11/21/leveraging-VMwares-enhanced-shared-nothing-VMotion/

    so, if I told you:

"yes we can just virtual computers vmotion from one site to the other.

and the underlying environment has been configured as follows:

    -Unique VCenter for all sites

-Clusters by site (for vMotion/DRS/HA in a cluster only)

    -No VLAN stretched between sites

-Routing in place across all sites

-No SAN or SAN replication that extends between sites

What would you say to me?

Is there a way (or even remotely possible) "we can just virtual computers vMotion from one site to the other?

In this scenario you can technically , through the above mentioned improved turf vMotion. But without VLAN stretched your VM will be accessible from the other site, unless do you a few magic fantasy to the physical network layer or decide to re - IP manually the machine virtual or the network as NSX virtualization.

However, any type of vMotion between hosts is only officially supported if vMotion vmkernel interfaces are on the same domain of dissemination of layer 2. Apparently, you can get an approval of support for VMware kludgy as this http://cumulusnetworks.com/blog/routed-vmotion-why/.

This will change with vSphere 6 that officially supports vMotion traffic routing however.

Also note that in this scenario there is y no HA or DRS between sites since your clusters are divided. But the generally longer the general idea that underlies the vMSC or his brother of distance is to have a single stretched cluster.

I recommend you read some of the messages of Ivan I've linked my post before he made some good shots of face on the whole subject from a perspective of networkers.

  • Long distance vmotion and cross-vcenter vmotion are incompatible, with MRS?

We plan our updates of 5.5 to 6.0. Two sites have involved SRM. We would like to be able to deploy to make long distance and cross-vCenter vMotion possible in the future. However it seems that these may be incompatible with MRS.

Cross-vCenter vMotion requires enhanced link mode. Improved link mode requires the vCenters using the same PSC. A dependency between the protected site and recovery site that would be created by putting the two SRM vCenters in bound mode is a non-starter. You must be able to connect to your vCenter site recovery if the protected site is swept away by a tornado.

The answer is maybe; Cross-vCenter vMotion is not compatible with SRM unless you create the deployment model with PSC servers redundant load balancing. Locate a CFP that is geographically separated from the protected site. Even in this scenario, it is clear to me if you would have to re-pointer the vCenter site disaster recovery. Again, I think that increased vMotion requires literally the 2 vCenters to be directed to the * same * PSC, CSP not only in the same SSO domain.

I have a box to open with VMware and I'll share the results if it is useful. The two protected site site and recovery use our company Active Directory as an identity source, but I don't think it will help us if we are in bound mode and lose a PSC.

Well, the weakness of my logic is in bound mode extended vCenters must point to the * same * PSC.  At least in SRM 6.1 there is some good news here.

  • Long Distance wireless transmission

    Good day everyone,

I'm working on a project that is to acquire several scoops of many reservoirs, which are remote at least 500 km, then sending them to the monitoring Center (which is my location) so I can use them in my monitoring application using labview 8.6. The question is: are there any national instrument device that can perform a transmission using GSM or GPRS.

    Thank you.

    Garry

    Hi Garry,

The basic idea is that, at the location of measurment you a certain kind of Smart controller. This can be something that can collect and use data to the machine of the anther (your pc or 'cloud' or a database). What I've seen before, it's that a WSN system will be implemented at the site with a WSN gateway in real-time. Gateway RT will collect data from wsn nodes and store the information in a .txt file or similar. Then the RT bridge will be connected to a 3G modem via the ethernet connection and the data is then accessed remotely from any internet compatible PC. Another option would be to publish the data in the form of a shared variable (WSN/o variables are already in this form) and then the host PC can enter data using a vi that uses low PSP level variables. Using shared variables, you would be able to see the most recent value.

If you are using a RT gateway you can also program to upload data to the Amazon Cloud using the vi in this link.

I can not really help you determine the price that I don't know your needs beyond that need long distance transmission. What I would do is spec out precisely what action you want to take or this sensor, you plan on using for each location and relative distances between the points of measrument: IE. You can use WSN or wired facility to measure 10 points instead of individual measurment devices at each point. Then you must decide if you want to use in real time or not. If you are, you will need to take into account for a license for the real time module. Once you have all the measuring points and their locations speced out (a map or image with related sites would be a great help) call your local line help OR (1-800-ASK-MYNI in the United States) and they should be able to work directly with you to arrive at a system and a price for the system.

    I hope that helps!

    See you soon,.

  • Virtualize vCenter and patching ESX hosts

I have a host two cluster HA with VSphere Essentials Plus, so no vMotion. (I know... good budget restrictions). It's a whole new infrastructure, so I only have a VM... my vCenter server running on host 1 (config) supported in a small size like mine environment

I use VUM patch my ESX host that requires that the guests of had no VM and be in maintenance mode.

The problem: How can I migrate my virtual vCenter server to my other host in order to set the host mode of maintenance and patch 1 (requires a vCenter runs).

My thought: two guests can see the LUNS for the vCenter server. I think I can go into host 1, power off the virtual machine and then remove from the inventory. Then, I'm going to host 2, browse the store of data LUN and ADD it to its inventory. Is this correct? If so, what file in the data store can I connect to the host (vmx, vmdk, etc.)

    Thank you.

Yes, it will work, but you will need to attach the base to a host at a time line.  You would add to inventory the .vmx

    Or use the command line

  • Necessary to reach the line of Fax Long Distance access code

I have a HP all-in-one Officejet J4550 Copier-scanner-fax.  My question is how can I send a fax when I need to enter a series of numbers without connection with the fax number to reach a long-distance line?  It's a long story, but I mainly long distance access via a calling card.  I first call a toll-free number and enter a 12-digit before I can enter the fax number.  The Officejet does not seem to have provisions for this.  She has just one field for the fax number.

I was able to answer my own question by using the method of trial and error.  It turns out that you can use the machine all-in-one HP Officejet J4550 fax 'manual', after all.  Forget the software "Solution Center".  I wrote just to the top of the other fax manually on the phone machine, put in all my codes required.  When I got another fax to the line, I put the Officejet key 'FAX (black and white)' using the arrow (adjacent to the 'OK' button '), responsible for my fax in the feeder and you press '1' at the prompt to send the fax.  (By pressing '2' will tell the Officejet to receive a fax.)  It's good to know, especially for the time that you can not by software.

  • Difficult to send and receive faxes long distances

    Hello-

I am running Window Vista Ultimate 32-bit with SP2.  I have bad to send and receive faxes.  Particularly faxes sent or from another area code (IE over long distances).  I have an Agere Systems PCI-sV92PP.  I use McAfee antivirus and have followed all the steps using Vista.

I tried to update the driver with no luck.  The error code I get when sending, said "cannot be sent due to an unexpected error".  "The error I get when receiving is call cannot respond by fax.

Something of note, when you send, if I click on the box next to contacts for formatting a business rule, the country / region default is UK and USA not.  I tried to change the sending, but it doesn't seem to help, and I was able to change the default value.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

If you are sure that your Modem configuration, drivers and compatibility with Vista, the modem is correct see if a third-party program is causing the problem, maybe McAfee interferes?

When you mention 'long distance' this means that you can send faxes, have you already sent and received a fax with your current settings?

Interesting... it must synchronize all... hmmm... Well, if your only interest is a paper copy, then an export might be too simple. The Desktop software can export to a CSV file, which you could then return to Excel and do what you please. Unfortunately, the export feature has been removed in more recent versions of Desktop software (don't ask... it's a HUGE bru-ha-ha!), and you must use an older version (6.x or lower, I recall) to do:

  • 6945 CP cannot transfer calls long distance cell phone

I am facing a problem with a Cisco IP phone 6945 and Unified Communications Manager Version 9.1.2.  The phone does not forward calls to a long distance cell phone.  I can't add/suffix the long distance code.  I tried different combinations with eligible set 0-9, *, #, +, X and I can not find a solution.

Please let me know how to forward calls to a cell phone long distance without turning off the long distance code requirement.

I wasn't sure the community post.  I looked at history and other messages were submitting to IP telephony, but it wasn't an option in the drop down.  My apologies if I've landed in the wrong forum.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Steve,.

You will not be able to do.

Please see the link that says

Calls that are passed to a FAC or compatible CMC routing model fail because no user is present to enter the code. This limitation applies to forwarding configured in Cisco Unified Communications Manager Administration or Options for Cisco Unified CM user pages. You can configure call forwarding, but all calls that are passed to a FAC or compatible CMC passes the results of the model to reorganize. When a user presses the CFwdALL soft key and inserts a number that has the College or MCC enabled on the routing model, the user receives reorder and forwarding functions fails.

You cannot prevent the configuration of call forwarding at a college or compatible CMC route model; diverted calls that use these models road delete because no code is entered. To minimize interruptions of call processing, test the number before you set up call forwarding. To do so, dial the destination number transfer; If you are prompted for a code, do not configure for this number call forwarding. Warn users of this practice in order to reduce the number of complaints arising from rerouting calls that do not reach the intended destination.
