MacKeeper. Yes or no?

Hi, I would like to know whether it is desirable to install MacKeeper.

If this isn't the case, I want to know what application or program is recommended to keep my Macbook Pro.

Best regards and many thanks.

MacKeeper is essentially the malware application.

Yes, without knowing it, I installed MacKeeper a few years ago. I uninstalled and searched my MacBook Pro and my external backup for MacKeeper files and deleted. A few months or if there is, I started having some popups for MacKeeper and today I got a popup for the renovator of the space. Anyone know how I can get rid of these popups?

If this does not solve the problem, you have adware installed one of the recommendations favorite by volunteers on these forums is to use malwarebytes for mac that isn't anti-malware, anti-virus. He simply deletes malware is known and does not remain resident to protect you from getting infections, only clean it if it is found.

Once again, it is simply a method, it is preferred by most of us, but far from the only method, and nothing is 100% foolproof.

  • MacKeeper is a scam!

Until recently, I was playing a game called agar.io and I thought that I wanted to try a play on a server private, so I looked agar.io private server. I clicked on a link and it took me another web browser that looked like safari, but the logo is a small insect robot holding something. I clicked on another link that took me to the private game. I clicked play and a pop up comes up saying: "you're mac is infected with the virus of worm of Bank. instantly, he asked if I wanted to download an application called macKeeper. I said yes so I downloaded it and it asked me to pay $148,99 to clean. I paid and the thing asked if I wanted to pay $400. something I wanted to but I did. When I filled out the credit card information, the Bank sent a message saying that she could not be allowed, so I looked upwards on the web aboutt this mackeeper. I was looking at the apple forum said the same thing, mackeeper wasn't true. I contacted apple and asked them to fix remotely my conputer, which they did for $199.99, which is worth about $400. I asked them if mackeeper was legitimate, and the guy said he wasn't and it removed instantly. I called the Bank and asked them to charge me for the $400 and $148,00, and I explained to him that mackeeper was a scam. they understood and said they didn't charge me. I made the right choice?

You did good in the end, we call it MacKreeper.

  • MacKeeper puts in my system tracking cookies - how we prevent that?

MacKeeper, without contact or action on my part, inserts itself on my browser, a tab opening and inserting tracking cookies and other items in my system folder.  Yes, I can close the tab and Yes, I can and run anti viral and anti spyware apps to locate and eliminate tracking cookies.  I have to manually go through all my biscuits to locate the other stuff and run research system to find stuff in other system files.  It is just difficult and long, but it's scary, because it can take just my computer without warning or invitation and I have no idea what she can do with the invisible files or files that have no mackeeper in their file name.  How can I block this outfit?

  • Mackeeper IS safe to download?

I have a problem on my new MacBook than Mackeeper pop up and asks me to download to my Mac clean.  Is it safe to download?

Lol do not download MacKeeper. It is not necessary to use on your Mac.

Third of what Mac utility for cleaning are not necessary on a Mac. Your Mac runs the maintenance in the background for you.

  • Yes, that was a stupid question

Yes. It was a stupid question. Serial number written on the bottom of the computor. Yes. I have it. DOH!

Although it would be useful for Apple to include this info in the topic How to find section...?

Still unresolved problem but it seems to be a non-accessible boot drive.

Reserved it in for bypass surgery, so we're getting there.

Apple has done an article on how to find a serial number:

I have an old Mac Mini with a DVI Port that came with a VGA DVI-adapter.  Tonight, my monitor went down.  Brand new monitor works with that? Any recommendations? Can I use an adapter?  If yes should which adapter I?

You can use any DVI monitor DVI port directly or have any VGA monitor with the power that you adapter. A HDMI monitor might work with an adapter DVI to HDMI in a pinch, but HDMI tends to be more fickle.

  • Firewall, yes or no?

I got my iMac 10.9.5 yesterday for crashing issues, they said there is no problems of material and thought

It would be better to do a reinstall of the operating system (maverick) when we look through that firewall security is turned off, do I need this on, I noticed? I had read the different options, but is it necessary?

    Thank you

If you are connected to a public network, then Yes. You should have the firewall on. If it's on your private network (connect to the internet via a cable or DSL modem in your home), then there is really not much need to do unless your network is secure.

  • Removal of Mac Mackeeper

I was reading messages on how to remove the virus Mackeeper from Mac.

Nothing worked until I removed a hidden folder named "Myshopmate" in the list of applications (you can see the list of applications through 'Finder'). Would like to know if this is what makes the means by which the virus Mackeeper is that hides behind.

Myshopmate is an adware and is independent of MacKeeper which is practically malware itself. Remove the two with uninstalling programs provided. If you have trouble with Myshopmate, download and run MalwareBytes.

    Hello Bigtex221,

This sounds like adware. I wrote a small diagnostic program to help show what adware is installed. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etrecheck.com, run it and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, don't request your password to install and is signed with my developer Apple ID.

If adware is installed, EtreCheck will help remove you, although you may need to provide a password. If you are not comfortable with that, just after the report of EtreCheck here and other AIDS can tell you exactly which files should be deleted and the way to do it.

WARNING: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

  • Is "com.historiograph.plist" something that people know? It was created at the same, I accidentally downloaded MacKeeper

Average of horrible judgment, I downloaded something that turned out to be just another way for MacKeeper Run Amok.  I turn on my firewall before you download anything either, and I'm glad that I did because weird things happened.  Chrome unexpectedly quit without even reporting it closes unexpectedly.  I also got a message asking to allow connections from the application "historiograph.  After made what I thought was a good uninstall of MacKeeper, I found this 'com.historiograph.plist' in hand > library > LaunchDaemons with the same created as MacKeeper.  In addition, there were two other .plists created at the exact same time com.lymphangiotomyUpd.plist and com.apple.sideb.plist

Is one of this natural look or will I be paranoid?

    Hello That_One_Guy,

Historiograph is not a known demon so I can't tell you if it is harmful. It is not part of any Apple software, so removing it will not cause problems with any Apple software. It is possible, that it is bundled with other software on your Mac that you would like to keep and could cause problems with this. It is also possible that the software that created it will recreate when you remove it. To remove it, I would recommend starting in safe mode (combinations of keys start for Mac - Apple Support) and then removing to make sure that the demon is not running when removed.

If it does not or you have any other questions, feel free to ask me questions.

    Thank you ~ Bryce

  • Beware of the MacKeeper

When installing MacKeeper, claiming to be "clean and protect your Mac" software he installed several pieces of adware and scareware which not only bore you and invites you to buy stuff you don't want or need but are possible phishing sites. I downloaded and installed under the impression that he was free. The announcement led me to download, he stated that he was free. I discovered that it was free to download, but cost money to use. I ran and concluded that he would do nothing unless you paid, I paid for one month of use ($19.95) and he ran. He said that he found and repaired somewhere about 12 000. Immediately I started to receive Web pages popping up trying to sell me software Reimage and foreclosed homes, etc. I ran MacKeeper again and it found and corrected a number of problems. Then, I decided to check it out and ran a battery of 10 times and each time he finds and repaired several different issues. How can issues arise only once to another when I didn't do anything else? I uninstalled MacKeeper and requested a refund. I immediately started to receive Web pages supposed to be Apple and similar to official pages on the Apple site informing me that I had three viruses and that the only course of action was to download MacKeeper (I saved bookmarks to these sites just in case I could find a place to report them to and when I try to go there, I get a warning that it is a suspected phishing site.) This happen several times per hour. In the meantime, I will continue to get windows trying to me but Reimage, foreclosed homes, MacKeeper or what have you. Sometimes, I'd get a vertical Ribbon about 2.5 "wide ALLERT saying me do nothing at all until I called Apple Support to the number they give me or asking me to chat online with Apple support representatives. Finally, I used EtreCheck to find the malicious files on my system and crossed the tedious task to find and remove them. However EtreCheck has provided me with the paths to them.

All the apps 'cleaning' are scams. There are still worse examples as 'MacKeeper.

Extract of effective defenses against software malware and other threats:

    • Never install a product that claims to 'clean up', 'speed', 'optimize', 'boost' or 'speed up' your Mac; to "wash", "tune" or to make it "brilliant". These allegations are absurd.
      • These products are marketed very aggressively. They are all scams.
      • They usually operate on the erroneous premise that Mac builds 'junk' that must be systematically 'cleaned' for optimum performance.
      • Trial versions of these programs are successful because they provide more instant gratification of free space on the disk.
      • This increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs or operating system components normally protected against accidental tampering or removal. The eventual result will be the reliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months, or even years after their use, when updates of programs or OS X are finally released.
      • Memory "cleaners" that bypass the work of OS x memory management algorithms by purging the memory contents inactive for mass storage, which can only result in performance degradation and accelerated the hardware failure.
