Firewall, yes or no?

I got my iMac 10.9.5 yesterday for crashing issues, they said there is no problems of material and thought

It would be better to do a reinstall of the operating system (maverick) when we look through that firewall security is turned off, do I need this on, I noticed? I had read the different options, but is it necessary?

Thank you

If you are connected to a public network, then Yes. You should have the firewall on. If it's on your private network (connect to the internet via a cable or DSL modem in your home), then there is really not much need to do unless your network is secure.

Im trying to download the demo version of captivate on my mac, the akamai netsession interface is now on my desk, I go through the Setup, it does this happy noise and indicates that the installation was successful, but nothing to really happens, no new records or documents or applications, appears as a sort of dead-end.

To study, I have clickedon that akamai in 'other' my system preferences is tells me that the status is "forbidden", but I am the administrator and I've never used this before free trial version, then why am I "banned?

Here is the part of the diagnosis if that helps:

  • Would Windows 7 firewall functions if I uninstall McAfee?

My PC is l670-1john family windows with MacAfee install by default

    I have never activate MacAfee.
Windows firewire is controlled by MacAfee
Firefox is block by firewire, I check configuration of firewire. It seems ok.

If I uninstall McAfee windows firewire will be functional?

    Thank you

    Hello

Yes, Windows 7 firewall is an internal function that would be always available even if McAfee would be uninstalled.
You can also enable or disable the firewall from Win 7 following way:

    1. open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button, click on the Control Panel, clicking Security, and then click Windows Firewall.

    2. click on turn on or off Windows Firewall.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. click on (recommended) and then click OK.

  • NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Firewall SRXN3205 and port forwarding?

Hi, this is a long shot, but I'm pulling my hair out at this point and can be a bit over my head, as I am new on network

Small short story, I have two servers, one is the NAS box (IE if I connect via the internet to the site via public IP network from home, I get it that site says 'my actions' I insert login and pass and get access to them.)
    That is, everything is peachy.
The problem is when I try to connect to my FileMaker Server I'm not and instead, he takes me to the login NAS box. So I think ok, I need to port forward (5003 for filemaker) to go to different PC local LAN(192. etc)

Security > firewall > Add Service entering:
    Service: fmserver
    Action: Always leave
Send to LAN Server: unique address 192. etc is filemaker installed on (and different on a NAS)
    Definition of Port number: 5003<-- is="" this="" right?="" how="" else="" would="" you="" indicate="" you="" want="" all="" connections="" on="" this="" port="" to="" go="" to="" this="" specific="" lan="" machine="" from="" internet="" instead="" of="" default="" which="" seems="" to="" be="">
rest is default, I click on apply.

Here's what I don't understand. In the table of incoming Services, (security > firewall) I have two local IP in the list, a SIN, the other for Filemaker. But only the top works and can be connected to. I can move every top position and it will work, but they will not work at the same time, just the one that sits on the top of the sad Smiley page

and yes I read the manual again and again and don't know how I'm screwing up the port forwarding on this point, even if I am brand new to probably something stupid Smiley Happy (our work IT guy is gone so tried to get involved through this somehow)

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello sinieq,

There is a hierarchy on incoming service table, which is normal. I see 4 services added using "ANY" (ALL use any port number) you will need to remove/disable these because of the rule of the hierarchy on the table, all other services will be ignored when EVERYTHING is used. What is the port number used by the NAS Server? I don't see a port defined to access NAS. Try disabling services by using "ANY" and try again by adding the translation to the port number of the NAS.

    Let us know what happens.

    Thank you

Run an online scan to check any virus or any other malicious software:
    http://OneCare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

    Run as Administrator Security Center;
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/understanding-security-and-safe-computing

Perform the following steps and update the computer:

    1. click on start, type Notepad in the start search box, and then click Notepad in the list programs.

2 copy the following text, and then paste the text into Notepad:

start wuauserv sc config = auto

SC config bits start = auto

SC config start = auto DcomLaunch

    net stop wuauserv

    net start wuauserv

    net stop bits

    net start bits

    net start DcomLaunch

Click file, click Save as, and then type Repair.bat.

    3. in the file type box, click all files (*. *).

    Hello

Malware to disable your firewall and your safety programs.

It would seem that you are infected with malware, you are re-directed.

Scan of Malware in Safe Mode with network.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-Windows-in-safe-mode/#Vista

    Windows Vista, etc.

    Using the F8 method:

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Boot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
    3. Select the Safe Mode with networking with the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
    5. To start Windows, you'll be a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
    6. Do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.

Once in Safe Mode with network, download and run RKill.

RKill does NOT remove the malware; It stops the Malware process that gives you a chance to remove it with your security programs.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

Then, download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware in Mode safe mode with networking:

    http://www.Malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

    See you soon.

  • the Windows Firewall has stopped working

I tried the system restore to just before it stopped working

    Hi geoffrey,.

System restore would have been my first suggestion, so that was an excellent choice on your part.  I would try it again maybe a few days earlier just to be safe, he did not start before you really notice or before, it became clear, as it is certainly the simplest answer, but frankly, I doubt that it will be more effective (but who knows - he can come back works perfectly and we are both happy, it was considered).  He also suggested that you know a little about computers, so I can provide instructions that contain everything you need but I will not go into nauseous detail unless you get stuck on a step and then you should post any problem you encounter and I will provide more help.  If you should post, don't forget to answer as many questions and include both the results of the proceedings or reports or copies or screenshots of screen that you can at the same time, so we can work on what to do then if none of this made the turn.

How do you know if what she has stopped working?  Do you have an error message (if so, what was the full and exact message Word for Word, including all codes)?  You have more than one firewall installed on your system (like that which is part of Norton Internet Security, Comodo, or something else)?  What security programs do you use and that you have installed (all names and versions)?  What version of Windows you are using (for example, 32-bit Vista Business SP2 or other - please be precise otherwise)?  When this occurred and did you a software or a hardware changes (additions, deletions, upgrades or anything like that) since two weeks before the problem (if so, precisely what has been done in as much detail as possible)?

Do you get this Center security or firewall Windows itself?  If you are using XP, post back with answers given that there is a limit to the options how can I cover without knowing the basic information.  If you use Vista or W7, go to Security Center or action center and check to see if there is a problem with the notification of the firewall or it's on.  If it's not on, it shows the details or links containing information about the problem?  If Yes, go to these links and copy the information and post here, so we can look at.

Then go into firewall Windows itself (on the left side of the screen) and confirm that there is a problem.  If she too says it is disabled, click on change settings.  Make sure the firewall is turned on - if not turn it on, click on apply and then click OK and confirm that it starts and begins to work.  If it does not start, it provides an error message (If Yes, what is completely and exactly Word for Word with all codes)?  Click Advanced, and verify that all network connections are checked - make if all are not and click OK, then again try to turn on the firewall.

If this does not work, go to start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services and then highlight the Windows Firewall and click Open.  Click dependencies and go to each of them and make sure they are started and automatic.  Otherwise change it to automatic and start them.  If it is impossible to do, check their dependencies and do the same until you reach the end of the chain of dependence.  Now return to Windows Firewall and make sure that it is set to automatic and started.  Then restart.  When the system returns, return to the service and confirm that the Windows Firewall is started and automatic.

Now, go into Windows Firewall and again try to launch and see if it lights.  Go to the center of security or Action and check that the firewall is enabled and works.  If so, the problem can be solved.  Just to be sure, restart and check the firewall to ensure that it is on and working.  If so, who should be the one.  But we do not know why it stopped, and if the problem may come back, then we must redouble efforts to find the cause or confirm that there is no problem.  Moreover, if the above did not work and Windows Firewall is still off, here's what you should do in any case.

Go to start / Control Panel / administrative tools / Event Viewer and look for error messages regarding the Windows Firewall (there will be errors).  Look in system first and then in Applications.  When you find the error or errors, click on it for details, copy these details and display them in your next reply.  Well, they can help us identify the source of the problem and there a fix for it.

We will check your system and hard disk for corruption files and try to fix it:

Go to start / all programs / accessories / command prompt and right click on command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

, Type sfc/scannow go and let it run.  It will scan and try to the difficulty of some of your system files.  If all goes well he comes complete with no corruption, it could not repair (if it has these post of corruption here or try to analyze it to find the problem or files using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228.

While in the command prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run.  They tried to set itself to run at the next reboot.   Answer Yes and restart to run the program.  It will scan and attempt to resolve any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and remove especially as a potential cause.

Then, we will confirm this is not caused by a malware any.

Update and run a full scan with no matter what security software you use, and remove or quarantine everything you find.

First, try the following programs if you do not, because they can help. I recommend you download, install, update and run full scans with Malwarebytes:http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and SuperAntiSpyware:http://superantispyware.com/ and then run a full scan of Microsoft Security:http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx. This may or may not remove the infections, but will probably not correct the damage caused by them. Even if they or your current AV software seem to work or indicate that you are not infected, you should not completely trust in them and must continue with the recommendations that follow (so it's up to you if you want to try them first, or just ignore all this and get help from an expert you really need as described below).

Correctly and completely remove these infections can be complex and often require manual removal procedures (which may or may not be entirely effective either). Even if they work, I suggest what follows in any case, so that we can start it (you can ignore the methods above if you want it really is the way forward, but it won't hurt to them for trying).

Please follow these recommendations of JimR1 - MVP compliments:

You are running Microsoft Security Essentials?

I hope this helps.  If none of this worked, then after return with answers to ALL the questions above (especially the first paragraph) and the results of all the procedures and the test that you tried in as much detail as possible and with two copies of reports or screenshots (as you prefer).  Without this information, we do not know where to go next without guessing or recommend a more radical proposal that may be required.

  • What dependency service or group must be enabled for ICS start the firewall can be turned on

Hit that and I will return to the window Security Center in Control Panel. Tried to manually turn on ICS and got error 1068: the dependency service or group could start. What service and / or the Group?

It was more than a notice of an answer to the question I posted earlier to not be able to activate Windows Firewall once I uninstalled Bit Defender and installed MS Essentials.  Sorry that if I crossed all the protocols forum this is my second attempt to get a question an answer, luckly I kind of figured it by myself.  Thanks for the response if and the offer of future assistance.

I you merge your two threads, but your problem is perhaps due to incomplete removal of BitDefender.

You are the victim of a very common scam. In addition to the money you paid, the prgrams that they installed were probably malware designed to collect and send personal information such as passwords, coordinated banking, credit card, etc. Review all information on your PC as a compromise.

    You should:

    1. tell your bank, etc (as applicable) of the credit card company what happened quickly.

    2. using another PC to your change all passwords quickly.

    3. you were common sense with the need to reinstall Windows because it's the ony way be sure & confident of getting a clean PC. However, make sure that do you a clean reinstall of Windows (involving a format your hard disks) rather than a repair reinstall.

    4. don't forget to consider all the drives (disks internal additional, external hard drives, USB thumb drives, etc.) as potentially infected if they were connected at the time or a moment any since. Unplug them until your PC is up and running with anti-malware real-time protection and a firewall work and then analyze them with a minimum of 2 reputable anti-malware programs (there is a degree of risk of reinfection in that).
