MBR

How to do the following in windows 7... It works under windows 10. This solution has been validated for me as having problems with dual boot...

  1. Click Start , and then click Power Options.
  2. Click on choose what the power buttons.
  3. Click change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Uncheck the box enable fast start (recommended).

"Quick start" is a function of Windows 10 which jumps from postpones the departure of some services to speed up the boot process. As it does not exist in Windows 7, there is no registry location that you can hack.

  • My problem is a messed up MBR?

I have a similar problem to this subject [help] can not boot Windows (8.1) after resizing partition but I'm not completely sure, that my problem is the same, so I don't want to try the steps until I know if this will help.

I've just updated to El Capitan and then disk utility to reduce the Mac partition thinking I could then add it to the Bootcamp of Win7 partition. I formatted the space unallocated as ExFAT thinking this would allow windows to work more easily with the score, but looking back, I realized that probably wasn't necessary. The reboot I had is no longer the option to start the Bootcamp partition. All I see is the Mac partition and recovery option. Of course, rather than ask for help, I tried checking the Bootcamp Assistant who did not see first the Bootcamp partition, but did later after a reboot. Then I tried to start on Bootcamp startup disk partition. This made me a screen saying he found no boot disk.

I realized then that I have to ask for help and I found the thread that I listed above. This seems close to my question but I see also it could be linked to the El Capitan update so I guess this could be the issue instead. I entered the orders in the Terminal that have been proposed in the above thread, and that's what I got.

I'm sure that I messed up the MBR somehow, but before I try the method of setting listed in the thread above, I thought I had better check that things are different and I don't want more dirty things.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Did you create a new partition (disk0s4/GPT4) manually? You have the same problem as the link you posted.

  • How to convert the MBR to GPT to work around Windows Installer error bootcamp

    Hello

I have a problem as a previous post (8.1 to Windows Installer on iMac with drive fusion, GPT partition error):

I have tried to install windows via bootcamp on my iMac and can't seem to fix the "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is the GPT partition style' error.

I successfully completed all the steps until I'm in Windows Setup and select the partition on which Windows should be installed. I get the error "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. @afeno

Welcome to the HP Forums, it's a great place to get help, find answers and advice,
Thanks for posting your request, I'll be more than happy to help you

If I understand correctly you want to use the trunk legacy rather than the UEFI boot, before getting into the details, however,

Here is the difference between Boot EFI and start-up of the legacy

This is the process used by the firmware to find the target of starting:

Legacy boot is used by the firmware BIOS boot process.
The firmware keeps a list of installed storage devices can be bootable (Floppy Disk Drives, hard drives, optical drives, tape drives, etc.) and list them in a configurable priority. the POST procedure has finished, the firmware loads the first sector of each target of memory storage and it scans for a valid Master Boot Record (MBR). If a valid MBR is found, the firmware passes execution of code found in the MBR, bootloader that allows the user to select a partition to boot from. If we don't get, it proceeds to the following equipment in the boot order. If no MBR is found at all, the user is presented with the famous "Please insert system disk".

UEFI boot is used by the UEFI firmware boot process.
Firmware maintains a list of volumes of valid boot called EFI Service of Partitions. During the POST firmware procedure UEFI scans all bootable storage devices that are connected to the system for a valid GPT GUID Partition Table (). Unlike a MBR, a GPT does not contain a boot loader. The firmware itself scanning the closure for a score of Service EFI to boot from. If no boot EFI partition is found, the firmware can fall back on the boot of the legacy method. If boot UEFI and legacy boot fail, the famous "Insert system disk" will be presented.

In general, the UEFI boot is more desirable.

  • Convert disk dual boot Mac MBR to GPT (GUID)

    Hello.

I use a Macbook Pro 13 in. Non-retine mid-2012. I currently have OS X 10.8.4 (I think, something of 10.8) double booted with Windows 7 Home Premium x 64. My boot drive is a 128 GB SSD that came with the laptop. I want to convert this startup disk to the GPT (GUID) Partition Table, so I can install Ubuntu with the three operating systems. He came in TPG, I think, but I broke the table to partition a bit backward and had to wipe the disk and do a recovery Internet reinstall (downgrade OS X 10.9 to 10.8) and * sigh * reinstall Windows. Anyway,.

Is there a way I can convert the MBR to GPT (GUID) partition table without ruining all the data or perform some operating systems unbootable?

Correction: I have disk configuration in a hybrid MBR, so my question is: is it possible to switch the hybrid MBR GPT partition without having to wipe the drive and reinstall operating systems?

It worked, but I wanted to delete it to install Berryboot (for multi boot my DD, with other os like kali...).

In any case, I went to the disk utility and erase my DD and then...

My micro sd card became invisible!

I can't change its contents or anything... when I plug it to the computer py, it is said: the disk you insert is not readable by the computer.

In the system report, I could see that:

I tried a few commands in the terminal to get the sd card ( sudo TPG recover or sudo diskutil repairDisk )... but it failed: error: device contains a MBR.

I want just to clear the contents of my sd card and be able to 'see' and install a new os!

If I understand you right, you cannot start a recovery facility of the HARD drive on the right?

    You created the recovery DVDs?

  • Satellite M70: Is it possible to repair the MBR through recovery CD?

Hi, I do not know where should I post. I have Toshiba Satellite M70 and I want to ask if it is possible to repair the MBR through recovery CD) just as you can do with the XP CD.

    Thank you.

    Hello

As far as I know that something like this is not possible. Recovery media can be used to restore the BONES together. This is an image and there is not some kind of repair option as the CD-ROM of Microsoft full version installations.

  • Windows Installer error saying that my drive's mbr, although it is really TPG.

    Hello

I really hope you can help me with my problem.

I have a retina of Macbook pro mid 2012 with a 256 GB ssd, installed with El captain.

I am train via boot camp to make a partition with Windows 10.

Windows setup via a San Disk 16 GB USB 3.0 purchased for this purpose.

Everything going smoothly until the part where you install windows.

Boot camp every reboot my Mac it comes up with a black screen saying "Non system disk. Press any key to restart '.

No matter what button I press it is not restart. I found myself pressing the power button until it stop. Then put it on again and pressing the ALT key.

Here I have two options Macintosh HD or EFI boot. I choose to start EFI. Windows Installer starts.

During the windows setup process where you choose which partition you want to install top says (after that I formatted to ntfs):

(translated from Danish) "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is the MBR. In EFI systems windows can be installed only on GPT disks.

Funny, it's just that my ssd is TPG. My USB drive is as well, I tried formatting with my mac, a computer windows and Rufus. All said that it is the TPG.

I tried to format my USB drive and partition my ssd using only the discutility and not the boot camp program. Same result.

I tried to make the unallocated space on my ssd so that install Windows could make the partition it self (I read this discussion in here) does not work either.

I tried with gdisk and the terminal to do what was suggested in another threat here, but the terminal told me that the partitions were on top of the other or something like that. And who were my technical abilities and courage run out. I would ruin not rather my precious Mac and terminal gave a few warnings.

Can someone help me? I would be very grateful.

You have a few different questions.

    1. your drive is a GPT with a hybrid MBR disk. Check the output of the following command in Terminal

    sudo fdisk/dev/disk0

    2. If you choose to boot from USB EFI and BCA creates a hybrid MBR, you will get the error you describe.

    3. your USB drive isn't supposed to be TPG, it takes a FAT/MBR.

    4. When you press the button works / stop, the partial installation of Windows will appear when you use the Alt key. Information Windows startup is now resident on the Mac's EFI partition, but it is not complete yet. Your icon USB EFI will restart Windows Setup.

    5. do you have a Time Machine backup of Mac OS X?

  • Qosmio X 505-Q896 damaged mbr (master boot record) PQX33U-052025

I've damaged by the master boot record.

If anyone can send me a copy of them, provided that the partitions are unchanged as provided by toshiba I'll be eternally grateful, because it will save me from formatting the hard drive.

    All other attempts have failed
It of a small file and can be copied using http://www.misec.net/products/mbr-backup/
I only need one c drive,

    Thank you very much

I m not the Qosmio X 505 owner so I can not provide you with all the files, but usually, you should be able to repair the MBR using the repair console.

You need a Windows 7 disc (not the Toshiba recovery disc).
Insert Win 7 installation DVD and boot from the DVD.

Click 'Repair your computer' to access the system recovery window
Choose "Command Prompt" in order to run the desired utility called "bootsect.exe".
Now run * "bootsect/nt60 C:\"* If you had win 7 initially installed in the C partition.
You can also run * "bootsect/nt60 SYS" * or * "bootsect/nt60 ALL" * to repair the system partition or all partitions

    Good luck and welcome

  • Who shares the style to be used: MBR or GPT?

    Hello

When formatting the SSD on my T440s, I can choose between two stules of partition: MBR and GPT.

    Which one to use?

    Lenovo says:

"Use MBR only when intend to use the image of the cloning tools or third-party disk management tools that require an MBR partition for compatibility purposes.

I don't know what they mean by that?

MBR is the old style boot record that exists for almost always. TPG is the new format design. Some disk utilities, especially the free, have never been updated to deal with GPT disks. Some programs will require upgrades. A year ago, I started using GPT for everything. The only downside I've found is that if you try to modify or to change the tables of partitions by hand, it's more complicated. I needed to update my old versions of Paragon Partition Manager and Acronis (the backup software I use)

    Here is a good report:

I have a satellite A50-111. The system with the error would not start a system disk and tried to boot from the network.

To get the pc working, I tried to reinstall Win XP Pro, but I get an error: cannot install MBR disks

    How to solve this?

    Hello

Have you tried to install the unit using the supplied restore CD?

  • GRUB loading before the MBR and causing issues

    Hello

I've erased the initial installation of Windows XP on my Thinkpad X60s and replaced it with Ubuntu just now.

To do this, I installed GRUB before installing Ubuntu Linux.

I must have screwed up of installation in the past, but ever since Ubuntu perfect.

However, now I want to return to my original installation of Windows XP from the ThinkVantage option.

But - when I try to do, GRUB appears before the MBR and generates an error and won't let me go further ahead. I tried to reinstall with an external CD, but this does not work as well.

Can someone help me with this problem? I need the MBR to appear before GRUB and continue my installation of XP.

I can't send the details of my menu.lst if that helps.

Also, on a different note, Lenovo will cover my warranty (3 years extended) if I have another OS installed?

    Thanks to all in advance.

    Hello, welcome to the forums

Select the windows partition and use the command "fixmbr".

    who should remove grub

did you try wubi for ubuntu? who settles on partitions windows as a program rather than a system dual boot... It's a foolproof method for try you it

  • Convert a Macintosh HD to the MBR to the schema GUID

My drive hard macintosh is installed on a 1 TB drive that has a MBR partition scheme. Currently, I run snow leopard 10.6.8. you want to upgrade to el captain. When I click the installer I get a msg "this disc does not use the GUID Partition table schema. Use disk utility to change the partition scheme. Select the drive, click the Partition tab, select the configuration of Volume and then click on Options". but as u see my screenshot below the 'options' tab is grayed out. How should I proceed? If your answer is to reinstall my os x or re-partition my drive... Please explain step by step because I am a beginner on mac. also I don't have a startup dvd for snow leopard.

FYI: I backed up my data using TM and super duper (Smart Update) to the same external hard drive.

You will have to reformat the hard disk to change it from MBR to GUID.

When you that all data on the hard drive with deleted then save whatever it is, you want to save first.
