    Hi bloviater,

    1. the updates you are trying to install?

If you are unable to enter the Normal Mode, then try Safe Mode system restore.

    Method 1:

    Step 1:

You can try to start in safe mode and check if the problem occurs.

Check out the link for more information on starting your computer in SafeMode below:

Start your computer in safe mode

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    Step 2:

If you can start in safe mode, then try a system restore to a previous point where you have not experienced the problem.

Note: When you do the system restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs

and updates that you have installed are removed.

To run the system restore, you can consult the following link:

You must specify the user name and password of the account and the correct POP3 and SMTP servers and their ports.  Only your email account provider can give you this information if you need to contact them to find out the values and settings are correct.  Who is not involved in what e-mail program, you use, you must always provide this information.

Yes. In addition to an anti-virus program, you must also at least one
anti-spyware (two or three is even better) program. Windows Defender is
    an anti-spyware program.

    But keep in mind:

I think McAfee is one of the two worst anti-virus programs on the
market (Norton is this one). I recommend that you run eSET NOD32
If you are willing to pay for anti-virus software, or one of the
the following three if you want for free anti-virus software:

    Avira
    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials

For anti-spyware, I recommend running all three of the following:

    MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    SuperAntiSpyware
    Windows Defender.

I bought a new computer, installed LR5 and import photos from a remote hard drive. Photos is finer, but all my Collections disappeared.  Is there a way to retrieve my Collections?

The Collections are stored in the LR catalog. If you had previously copied to your catalog on the other computer to the new all your collections would have been there.

Now that you have the images on the new computer, 'IF', they were placed in the same folder structure (IE even the folder names and locations) then copy through the original catalogue "should" include your collections. If they are in the names of different folder or on a different drive letter or name of the player, then you might be able to use the feature to locate Images to find them.

  • My computer will not install FireFox / closes at half way through the extraction

I've only had this problem on my VIZIO CT15-2. It extracts all downloads without any problem, ever. Yet, the Firefox Setup Stubs 22.0 & 29.0.1 (the only ones I downloaded), when I try to install, gets only up to 61% of the extraction. At this point, the Extraction_Window simply closes... No configuration menu. nothing... I tried all kinds of different settings: run as Admin/no administrator, add to the list of programs that bypass firewall, he ran as each version of windows possible. Still nothing...
    My OS: Win7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit, processor Core i7 1.9 GHz, 4 GB RAM, SSD 265.

I had this problem since I was 1 receipt portable August 2013. The laptop has been renovated and restored to factory settings, when I got it. I removed all malware. I have no virus... Any suggestions?
I prefer using FF on Chrome anyday. So it's more boring. Maybe I can bypass the operating system and find the heel through command? Registry search for older versions of firefox that could be holding upward? It is more strange... Any suggestion would be great!

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!

HOW to do a clean install of Vista: see the "to install Windows by performing a clean install" (or "reinstall Windows Vista") http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-Vista article

NOTE: If your computer came with a set of disks, there is a hidden partition restore (not to be confused with the restoration of the system) you would use to do the clean install (AKA a "destructive recovery").

After the new installation, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of EVERYTHING on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) AND BEFORE to plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external drive to the computer otherwise:

VERY IMPORTANT! -Online any Norton or McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free AND download/run the removal tool appropriate prior to installing the updates, Windows Service Packs or IE upgrades AND BEFORE installing your new anti-virus application (e.g., Trend Micro Security Pro;) Microsoft Security Essentials - free).

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, good reputation and stand-alone computer (that is, not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) repair facility.
