  When I tried to install windows vista service pack 2 (from Windows Update), my AV (Webroot Antivirus) software popped up twice messages saying that it detected the virus ' evil/mdrop-gen. " The first time that I blocked the second time it timed out (I think) and service pack installation has failed. This virus never before. I googled and saw that someone had a problem similar (March 2008). They disabled Spysweeper, rebuilt the facility and had no problems. They then did a virus scan and found nothing.

  It is a real threat from the service pack (even once, I downloaded via Windows Update), or is this a quirk and there is really no threat, and I should just try installing sp 2 with Webroot AV turned off?

  I use the standalone version of SP2 to Vista 32 bit; link above.

  I have downloaded/saved to the desktop, and then burned the disk.

  In this way, you install on any computer. make sure that you have that right, 32-bit or 64-bit version

  And I turn off the AV to install it.

When I tried to install after pressing accept on the license agreement screen, when it says computer preparation. I get an error indicating that the Installation has failed. I also tried some work around and find myself without success. So far, I turned my (even uninstalled), kaspersky internet security ran system update tool, disable most of the startup process, reset the permissions in my registry and created a new user with privileges to administrator, but when I access the user created recently, after the box at the top left corner that says personilizing (in the classic windows theme) need me just a blue screen error-free. But I can still access the Task Manager and its been like that since.

  The site is authentic.  You have two options when you do your relocation:

  Method 1

  1. Download SP3 form the Microsoft site and burn it to a cd or copy it to a flash drive.
  2. Reinstall Windows with your original Windows XP CD.
  3. Use the copy of SP3 that you burned on the CD or copied to the flash drive and update the machine to SP3.  Note that if you have an original CD of 'gold' of Windows XP without service pack that you install SP1a or SP2 before you install SP3, SP2 is available here , download and save it with SP3 before making your relocation.

  Method 2

  1. Download SP3 from the Microsoft site and it wake to your Windows XP CD.
  2. Install Windows XP with your slipstreamed CD and your installation will be in SP3, when installation is complete you will not need to install service packs, you'll just have to do some other updates that have been released after SP3.

  The http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cd is legitimate, it only gives you instructions on how to create and burn a CD of SP3 slipstreamed Windows XP.  If this seems too daunting then use method 1 to install Windows.

  Both methods are very good but method 2 allows a nicer cleaner installation, everything is installed to SP3 level and there are no remnants of previous service packs.  While creating the slipstreamed CD may appear to be a time consuming task, in the end, it will be a time saver and afterwards if you ever have problems with the installation of Windows you may need this cd SP3 slipstreamed to all repairs on the installation.  You can create the SP3 cd now and do it ready and at hand for future needs.
