Migrate standard network switch to VDS

Hello

I intend to migrate little my clusters that are running in a standard switch to DVS. Need help to automate this process.

My scenario is:

In a 15cluster environment are present 5 are already running in DVS
but 10 clusters are still a standard switch so I need to migrate the
already existing DVSwitch.

By taking a cluster of 10node as an example.
(1) mgmt and vmkernel are on a vswitch (ex: vswitch 0)
[vswitch 0 - connected with 2 vmincs]

(2) virtual machine in a vswitch portgroup (Ex: vswitch 1)
[vswitch 1 - connected with 2 vmincs]

On all groups, we need to migrate only machine virtual portgroup
or vmnetwork (ex: vswitch 1) to off-network vmkernel mgmt DVs.
My plan:
First add all cluster hosts to DVswitch
Remove all a redundant vmnic (ex: vmnic3) connected to the machine virtual portgroup. (Ex: vswitch) 1 and adds it to DVswitch.
Now migrate all virtual machines connected to a standard switch to dvs. (Here I hit)
Is it possible if VLAN 10 (standard switch) then consists of 5 virtual machines
check the VLAN 10 DVS and portgroup network set to 10 VLAN adapter on the
SMV (I mean can we compare VLAN ID on VSS and VDS and inspiring than us)
need to migrate virtual machines to a DVS.)

As below:

VLAN_58_VDS.JPG

VLAN_58_VSSD.JPG
If it works correctly then you have to check the State of all virtual machines (ignore power VM off) ping
If ok then proceed to map the second network card (ex: vmnic4) VSS for VDS.

Use the Script:

# ESXi hosts to migrate from VSS to VDS
$vmhost_array = @("host1","host2")
# Adding Hosts to existing VDswitch
$vds = Get-VDSwitch -Name "SM_UAT"
foreach ($vmhost in $vmhost_array) {
# Add ESXi host to VDS
Write-Host "Adding" $vmhost "to" $vds_name
$vds | Add-VDSwitchVMHost -VMHost $vmhost | Out-Null
# Migrate pNICs to VDS
Write-Host "Adding vmnic2 to" $vds
$vmhostNetworkAdapter = Get-VMHost $vmhost |Get-VirtualSwitch -Name "vswitch1" |select -ExpandProperty Nic |select -First 1
$vds | Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmhostNetworkAdapter -Confirm:$false
# Migrate VMs from VSS to VDS
Write-Host "migrating vms from VSS to VDS"
}

Maybe try like this

# ESXi hosts to migrate VSS to VDS

$vmhost_array = get-VMHost-name 10.50.37.31

# get existing VDswitch

$vds = get-VDSwitch-name "Pre-production".

foreach ($vmhost to $vmhost_array)

{

# Add ESXi hosts service VDS

$null = $vds |

Add-VDSwitchVMHost - VMHost $vmhost

$vssPG1 = $vmhost | Get-VirtualPortGroup - VirtualSwitch "vswitch1.

foreach ($vssPG to $vssPG1)

{

$dvsPG = $vds |

  • Migration of VMs to a vDS

I prepare myself for my VCP exam this month and I need to clarify the possible methods to migrate a virtual machine to a vDS. Some information I read indicates the two only ways to migrate a virtual machine recommended / vDS several virtual machines to a switch is as follows:

    1. change the adapter for a particular virtual machine, and then select the port vDS group

    2. use the migration Assistant under the view vDS of networking and to migrate the virtual machines in this way.

I also see that you can migrate the port group which then allows you to select the virtual machine attached to this port group. So my question is this:

Can you mirate one port group and have then migrate the virtual machines in the annex? I tried in my lab at home and this method seems to work. I don't remember seeing that the method listed on the PDF networking of VMware vSphere 5.

    Still thanks for the help!

    Ed

Yes, you can migrate the virtual computer to a vDS using the Wizard "migrate Virtual Machine network. It is an option to migrate some or all network cards VM from a specific port of the group to an existing group of ports vDS (or vice versa).

  • Standard network naming

[I have three hosts \[vm01, vm02, vm03\] in a single cluster \[CL01\]. On each host, I have a virtual switch with two standard networks - one for mgmt and a single port group. On dv01, I named these VM01Network and VM01MgmtNetwork. VM02 and 03, I simply changed the numbers in the names to match. Therefore, each host has two networks and the cluster has three networks port group... VM01Network VM02Network and VM03Network - in other words, each host has a different virtual network name...

Is this properly configured? I intend using FT and HA. Do I need all these names are the same? Is what makes them different better? TO be clear, if you look at a map of the cluster you see three unconnected cards.

The names MUST be the same for vMotion (and I guess) FT to work.  This is because the name is what the NETWORK card in the VM properties is related to.  When the virtual machine is moving to a different host, he finds the correct port group by matching the name.

  • Replacement of the corporate network switches how ESX and VM will react?

We replace all our switches in current network with new gear. All our ESX network connections are redundant (console, vmotion and virtual machine) with each connection associated with a different switch (for example the virtual machine NIC is connected to different switches and the same for other groups of ports). I was wondering what will happen when migrate us to the new switches. We intend to make this port a port at a time. My guess is that when we have the first virtual machine network cable and move again preconfigured port switch all the VMS on this NETWORK adapter will switch to the other NETWORK adapter as if it was a failure. The migrated Server NETWORK card will be auto-negotiation with the new port and become availble for use but VM will not request for load balancing between the two network cards. We then will at some point to move the other virtual machine from the old network card switch to a new switch and the VM are switched to the new other switch port and as the first card NETWORK occurs autonegotiation and the nic will become available. But how do I get the network traffic balancing across both connections of NIC's virtual machine? I understand that load balancing of virtual machine through the NETWORK interface only to the market and vmotions card - is this true and if so how can I force a reload balance or even manually load balance... Thank you

Failback only works when you run active / standby NIC.  If you are running active-active, you can set the host mode maint, let it drain and then leave the mode maint to allow virtual machines to come back and live on some Teddy they land on.

With respect to the passage of the switch the riskier part is to make sure that you have all the VLAN defined on the 'new' switch and that there is a layer 3 path to the front door of this switch.  When you migrate the first server I would put in mode now, put some DRS in manual mode and then make the transition.  Then a vMotion machine virtual not essential (or 1 VM for each VIRTUAL local area network) on to this host to make sure that the installer of L2 and L3 works correctly.  Make sure that the field of L2 on the old switches can talk to the L2 area on the new switches.

  • Connection to CVS GigE camera via a network switch

It is a fundamental and very simple question!

I intend to connect two GigE cameras to NI CVS-1458RT for an application of Imaging. When I tested the configuration in MAX, I realized that I can connect the cameras directly to the PoE ports, or alternatively, connect the cameras directly to the network switch and in both cases, connect the CVS to my network via its ethernet port. I was wondering if there is a benefit by connecting directly the VCA cameras, if I do not anticipate supply their Poe or if my switch has PoE Betacam.

    Thank you

Usually, you always want your cameras on dedicated lines, or at least only sharing bandwidth with other devices. The mechanism of transport used by GigE Vision isn't really sharing good bandwidth with other devices. If you only share the bandwidth on a link given with other devices, you can throttle each take only a percentage of the total bandwidth. If you have devices without camera on the link, they don't usually have a mechanism to control the gap inter-frame limitation insofar as GigE vision made which would be necessary for properly sharing the bandwidth without remove the packages of bandwidth.

If you end up sharing one of the ports for the operation and configuration of the CVS on the network, you will be at the risk of losing image data packets whenever the rest of the traffic is sent. Although there are mechanisms in place to return data, these add latency and jitter to your purchase.

  • How to connect two network switches Force10 S4810P

    Hello world

We just bought two S4810P Force10 network switches and we want to install on two adjacent brackets. They will be used to interconnect computing and NAS storage, installed in two baskets serving mainly local connections.

We intend to use ports QSFP + to connect the two switches, and I have two questions.

    1. hardware configuration: what are the best transceivers and cables to use in this case?

    2. configuration of the software: should we use stacking or virtual link trunking? the information I've read so far does not give me a definitive answer.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

The server room is already has some inside wiring? If so it be a transceiver that will percolate pre-existing cables. There are also some direct attach cables ranging from 0.5 m to 50 m. Here is an example of a cable direct attach: http://dell.to/23huDl7

the best course of action would be to contact your sales representative and let them know what your needs are. They can get you city for right connection hardware.

the VLT and stack the two have the same goal of redundancy, but go about it in different methods with different warnings warning for both. In both scenarios, the redundancy is dependent on each device connection linking the two switches. If you do not do this, then it may be better to let the independent switches. Here is a good blog that compares the VLT and stacking.

Yes, you will need to manually change.

  • Disable HA or use the Maintenance Mode when the upgrade of the network switches

    Hello

We expect the upgrade to our network switches. In the case where the hosts loose network connection I want to avoid having HA suddenly and guests try to run current virtual machines. What is best practices for cluster HA-activated in case guests loose network connection?

Disable HA or put all hosts in maintenance mode? Or is there another suggestion?

    Vickers

If you are using vSphere 4 there is option to disable HA response to failure without disabling agents HA HA. This option has been added specifically for when you know you're going to do the maintenance of the network and that you do not want HA answer when the management network is down. It is much faster to do that that in order to completely disable the HA or put all hosts in maintenance mode.

  • Options grayed out after that migration vSwitch0 vmk0 to distributed network switch

I have a bunch of ESXi 6 guests, where I would like the default vSwitch0 to a vDS management interface. However, it seems that the management network gets screwed more or less of this operation

First I tried to simply migrate the physical interface and vmkernel to vds = no chance (resets the form configuration time to hosts)

Then I tried to connect a NIC seconday to the same switch, adding as a management console interface, make two interfaces marked as management interfaces. The uplink of vSwitch0 is replaced by the new interface and the vds is mapped to the original management interface. From this point, I can migrate vmk0 to the distributed switch and remove the extra card. All good, at least at first glance. The army continues to communicate with vCenter and so on. However, return to the console options to "Network adapters" and "VLANS (optional)" are grayed out. The only way I managed to get back them is again a reset to the default settings of the management network.

After som test front and rear, it seems that these options disappear as soon as vm0 leaves vSwitch0?

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

The army continues to communicate with vCenter and so on. However, back to the console options for "Network adapters" and "VLANS (optional)" are grayed out. The only way I managed to get back them is again a reset to the default settings of the management network.

I guess that's the expected behavior, because once your vmk0 has been migrated to vDS, now the vDS control plan which is with vCenter server will allow you to change these settings as network card and VLAN ID etc.

  • Standard network config switch

I'm just up an environment VSphere 5 and running for the first time.  It is the way I have the network currently installation.  I was wondering if I should split the network management and VMotion on in separate vSwitches.  Management and VMotion are configured to each use one of the physical NETWORK adapter while the VM network is sharing the other two physical NIC resources I use to implement illustrates the configuration of the network both directions, but does not specify which is the best option.  Thanks in advance for any help!

    VMware_Network.jpg

I think it's important that you choose a different range of IP subnet for the other than the management network vMotion. Your configuration now I believe that you will not use the vMotion VMkernel at all, only the other interface management and vMotion.

  • Migration of distributed switch

I plan a migration of the Nexus 1 k and I'm trying to do with no interruption of service.  I found a blog post that discussed migration switch and built a project around that plan, but wanted to see if what I was going seemed feasible.  Anyone have any ideas on the next plan?

    1. Build the new VMware Distributed Virtual Switch with all the required VM networks
    2. Go to each host and build a local switch with all VM networks required with network names to which is added "_locale.
    3. The first selected host detach one of the 10G from 1 NICs K and again fix local switch (expected loss of ping ping 1 or 0)
    4. Go into each virtual machine on the selected host and change VM portgroup of correspondents '_locale"portgroup (expected loss of ping ping 1 or 0)
    5. Detach the remaining nic 10G on 1 K and attach to the local switch
    6. Remove the selected host from 1 k
    7. Add a network card to 10G on the host selected to DvS created in step 1 (expected loss of ping ping 1 or 0)
    8. Go into each virtual machine on the host selected and change the VM "_locale" portgroup to corresponding portgroup on DvS (expected loss of ping ping 1 or 0)
    9. Remains 10G nic switch Local detach and attach to DvS
    10. Remove the Local switch
    11. Repeat steps 3 through 10 for the remaining guests

Why use the local switches between the two? Can't you just use the network option on the VDS migration to get the networking of VM directly on a VDS?

  • Internet through the network Switch

    Hey,.

So, assuming that there is a switch of fiber optic network in a building and the apartments in the building are connected to the Internet through this switch via standard Ethernet cables and the other end of the Ethernet cable is a router without wire-House. Now, my question is: the other apartments in the building are connected to the switch access Homegroup LAN/Windows (or in other words: computers in another apartment)?
    Thanks in advance.

Your individual home router should be a DSL (no ADSL) router and can be identified by the fact that although all ports are physically identical (so a LAN cable would be all of them), is not separate and labeled on the lines of the cable/DSL/WAN port. It is this port which is connected to the backbone of building connected to the incoming fiber router

As with any home router between this port and your port WiFi/LAN is a firewall. By default, the firewall does not allow incoming connections from the WAN port the LAN port. Ideally one who set up the router base also fiber not allow traffic pass directly between its own LAN ports which are actually links to the clients in each apartment, although this can not be done because they know that firewall routers are used for each client.

  • Right for iSCSI network switch

I am looking at a switch for an entry-level iSCSI SAN and I'm looking to find the right sort of numbers for the speed and the size of the Mac Address Table.  My storage network is a MSA2324i HP array connected to two HP DL380 G6 servers using iSCSI.

I had looked at HP Pro curved Switch 2824 and switch SRW2016 of Linksys.  The Linksys, I have used before in the 24 port model and me found it performs well for a 30 users network with VLAN but I want to know if it will support storage network traffic.

HP Pro curve that I know will be good but it is three times the price and I am limited in the budget.

Anyone has any advice on a switch which must support traffic from 15 servers, including Exchange 2010 and SQL Server 2005 with DR and HA.

I would struggle see exhaustion MAC address as a problem. A storage switch must be insulated, and with 15 servers + SAN, you have 16 MAC addresses. Even something very entry level should handle this.

That you need to make sure, is that the recommendations of the iSCSI standard are supported:

    • Jumbo frames

    • Flow control

    • Rapid STP

    • A bottom of basket fast enough run at full speed on all ports

    • A high level of management.

  • How does a Max flow to the network switch?

Want to total maximum flow of report on all ports of the switch 24 for a period of time. Able to obtain reports for individual interfaces.

    Thanks for any idea.

    Don Jarmon

    Hi Don,

There is no report canned for this information.

The workaround is to create a group called 'Test' or whatever you want to call. Put a device in this group. Then go to reports-> Network Interface high-speed percentage/capacity and choose the group that you did (which has a single device).

    Best regards
