Modem cable and gateway Question?

We set begin to use a new supplier of internet services by cable. This provider requires you to use their modem. My question is, 'We already have a LinksSys WCG200 cable gateway', will be able to simply use the router function of cable without the built-in modem gateway? Or would have to go buy a separate router?

Thanks in advance.

WCG200 doesn't have the Internet port where you can connect the cable from the cable modem Ethernet.

Then, I suggest you to go to a separate router.

  • Problem with TC loss of connection to the modem cable

I have a TC of 2 TB which is connected to my ISP provided by cable modem. It worked fine for 3 months after the installation in December, but now all of a sudden it will lose its connection to the modem and we lose our wireless internet. We have replaced the modem cable and it does not solve the problem. I have to reset the TC 2 - 3 times a day. Nothing else has changed recently with regard to the network set up. that only changes were to specific devices that use the wifi connection, and this was always something changing, depending on the devices we use. Any thoughts? I'm not a savvy person tech, BTW.

We need to ask a few questions in order to learn more on what the possible cause of the problem might be.  Please be patient with this. Thank you.

What is the number and the model of the modem you are using right now?  We ask because some modems work better than others with Apple routers, and even if you have changed the modem, it could still be a model who does not get along well with the Apple router... or... you could say that the router from Apple does not get along well with the modem.

How old is the TC? We ask because the life expectancy, on average, a time capsule is about 3 years.  After that, they tend to start losing connections to an ever-increasing rate.

Who is your provider of Internet (ISP) Service?  We ask because most suppliers are in the active process of implementation of a new type of connection called IPv6 in their systems... and despite ISPS claiming that their system changes should cause no difficulties connection or interruptions system... which doesn't seem to be the case at all.

We have seen an unusual number of reports from users who suddenly have problems with their ISP connection, when things were very well for many months before. That points directly to the IPv6 changes that ISPS are doing as the culprit. In some cases, there could be way to work around the problem, and in some cases, there is nothing to do but wait as the ISP to complete their changes and be everything to speed.

  • Windows 8.1 and modem cable motorola 5100

shouldn't windows finds a new device such as a cable modem, when you plug in say a connectedd USB cable for modem on my laptop? or an ethernet cable?

I use a wifi router to access the internet, which through modem. I had a problem with a certain program, so would trouble shoot by bypassing the router... but when I plug in the modem direct, nothing happens, does not detect not either via Control Panel. the CD that came with the modem does not work with windows 8. the script fails or whatever...

    Hello

How old is this modem?  I went to the user's Guide to verify the settings, etc. for you to try, and it seems that it is a modem DOCSIS 2.0 based.  Y at - it a newer version which is DOCSIS 3.0 compatible that you use?

The documentation I found indicates that the modem is compatible only with Windows up through XP.  So unless there is an update of firmware for this modem, one recent, which upgrades the firmware to be compatible with Windows 8, I don't know how everything will work.

In general, to answer your question, Yes, Windows will communicate with a modem, it is attached to, request and receive an IP address if it can communicate with the modem and everything should be automatic. Does not question whether it is wireless, USB or ethernet connection.   But, like I said, don't know how that would work, if it even will work with such older modem.

Let me whether I'm looking for the wrong modem documentation and if so, please send me a link to the modem plug, and that's okay.  I'll see what I can do to help you.

  • Airport extreme for modem cable via an ethernet switch?

I can connect the airport extreme to the modem cable via an ethernet switch, or must the extreme connect directly to the modem?

The answer to your question depends on what type of "modem" cable you may have.

If you have a simple modem, as in the example below with a single port Ethernet, your network should look like this:

Internet > Modem > AirPort Extreme > Switch and other devices.

If you have a modem/router, which is actually a modem and a router separate which are combined in a single package, looking for something like the example below, your network may look like this:

Internet > Modem/Router > switch > AirPort Extreme and other devices

or... it might look like this:

Internet > Modem/Router > AirPort Extreme > switch and other devices

If you do not know what kind of modem you have, post back with the number of brand and model of the device that you call your "modem", and we will do some checking.

  • What is best modem cable to twin with new extreme apple 802.11 ac

I have an old motorola sb6121 paired with new apple 802.11ac extreme I bought yesterday and after 12 hours of trying everything I keep getting disconnected every few seconds... I have read all the message concerned and tried them all to play nice... When I have more signals 85 Mbps because I pay for the explosion of comcast.  I want a new modem and would like to know what is recommended... I see zoom 5141j is recommended, but I see zoom a modem cable new 16 x 4... It would be to my advantage to go with vx 16 x 4 8 x 4 channels at the time of the twinning with extreme? Thank you

What is best modem cable pair with the new 802.11ac Apple extreme

Questions like this are indeed impossible to answer... especially because that person has tested every modem with an AirPort Extreme to see if there is really a modem 'best '.  Even if it were possible to come with a modem 'best' but... it would be judicious bit to choose this modem and then knowledge that was not supported by Comcast.

Therefore, a better plan for you may be to search a list of modems supported by Comcast, narrow your choices down to 3-4 products, then post this list here and ask other users of Comcast comments on how the products have performed for them.  You can also consider posting on a forum online from Comcast as well.

Regarding your question about the new Zoom modem, this product is really new, so it will be some time before a work experience can be developed for this product. It seems that the new Zoom modem is designed primarily for working with connections to high speed... 600, 700, 800 + Mbps Internet speeds. So, unless you plan to upgrade to a plan of Internet connection with these types of speeds in the near future, you probably don't need a modem with this type of functionality.

  • Upgrade to modem cable with router?

I plan to upgrade my modem cable to take advantage of the increased speed that Comcast now offers in our region. I think my Airport Extreme of 2007 could be a brake on the increase in the speed of a new modem. I would like to know if it is better to buy a new modem cable with built-in wifi router.

My current Airport Extreme supports two iMacs (24 "in 2007 and a 27 '' 2010), two iPhones and iPad two minis. My current cable modem offers 34 mb/s download speeds and download about 6 MB/s.

I will be grateful for any advice... Thank you

I think my Airport Extreme of 2007 could be a brake on the increase in the speed of a new modem.

There are 2 different versions of AirPort Extreme offered in 2007... a 1st generation version and the 2nd generation.

The 1st generation version will manage an Internet connection speed of up to about 100 Mbps. The 2nd generation version will manage up to 350-400 Mbps.

If your new service provider will be 100 Mbit/s or lower, it is not really important what version you have. Either the version of AirPort Extreme will take care of this service.

If your new service will be 100 + Mbps, then you will have the Gen version 2nd of the airport to take advantage of the higher speeds.

IF you have the 1st generation AirPort Extreme... And... your new service will be well above 100 Mbps... THEN... it might be a good idea to take a look at a new modem/router.

HOWEVER... If your new service will be less than 100 Mbps... so you probably won't receive any improvement with a new modem/router and it would be wise to simply continue to use the airport until it fails.

So an important question here might be... what version of AirPort Extreme do you have?

Another important issue could be... your current modem will support the service high speed?

Open the AirPort on your Mac utility and you should be able to know which version of airport you have.  If you can provide the serial number and model of your modem, we will see if we can find out what he can do.

If you wondering if Comcast, you should know that the person you speak to will probably receive a bonus if you order a new modem or new modem/router...so you may not receive an unbiased opinion on their part.

Finally, there are a number of users who believe that, as a general rule that you need to replace a modem or a router in about 5 years... even if it doesn't work OK. So, you might get some interesting opinions together.

  • Why do I often keep my modem closing and then restarting in order to stay in touch?

It is a modem from Verizon and about 3 years.  I'll be in the middle to send him something, or by browsing a site, and all of a sudden the lights start blinking furiously.  I have to then turn off, wait and start again then compose a message.

Thanks for all the help, and I don't know there will be MORE questions, because I'm not as savvy PC, but try to learn ;-).

    Bobbie

You must determine if the modem is in fault, or something else.

Next time the problem occurs, instead of power cycling your modem, stop and turn off your PC. Then restart your PC. See if the problem has disappeared or that it still remains.

If the problem persists after restarting your PC, then the problem is probably in the modem. Call Verizon and INSIST that they replace it.

If the problem goes away after you restart your PC, then the problem is likely to be caused by a problem (hardware/software) in your PC. Check / replace the cable between the modem and the PC (or between the modem and your router).

Try closing your browser, and then restarting your browser... the problem goes away.

If you have (or can borrow) a second PC, unplug your PC and connect the second PC to the modem and see if the problem persists.

If the modem is connected to a router (and your PC is attached to the router), then cycle power to the router to see if the problem goes away. If it's a very old router, consider replacing it.

If your PC is wireless, try to fix your PC with an ethernet cable (and disable your wireless network card and allowing your ethernet adapter) to see if the problem goes away.

    Good luck!

EDIT: You can also use your antivirus software to perform a full scan of your hard drive (just to rule out the possibility of the problem caused by a virus trying to 'phone home').

I recently dropped my laptop and it is weird, one day he int open up to 4 start times and sometimes it shows me a folder and a question mark in the interface and sometimes asked to reset my password, what are the steps to take?

Anything can be corrupted on your MacBook Pro, but from what you say, it seems that the cable drive/SSD/flash memory/SATA hard was seriously damaged. Him "question mark" means that your Mac is unable to find any bootable device, meaning that it does not yet detect your OS X drive.

You should make a backup of your files (if you can still do it) and take the Mac at the Apple Store or dealer to get a diagnosis. There may be several damaged parts.

  • Satellite M60: Little or no connectivity with the Modem cable

    Hello.

I just got a Satellite M60, and I'll have limited connectivity or none when I try to connect to the internet via my Modem cable through the local network.
OS is WIN XP Home SP2 PTG and I restored the original instalation, but nothing seems to work.
    Can anyone help?

    Thank you

    Hello

What do you mean by limited connectivity?
Did you check the system for viruses and worms?
On the other hand, the active virus protection software can make your stream slowly or active. In addition, you check the cable lan for a few bows.

    Good bye

  • How close my TC must be to my modem cable?

No matter how close I place my modem cable to my time capsule? Because only the TC will issue wireless signal I assumed that there would be no interference. Am I wrong? The modem is declining by the signal several times a day and I was wondering what could interfere with the signal. Should I ask a new modem IP address?

    Thank you

    Michael

At this point, you really don't know if you have a problem with the modem, dropping the signal... or the TC dropping the signal.

The way to know is temporarily connect your computer directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable connection, turn it off wireless on the computer and keeps things set up that way for a day or two to watch the connection.

If the signal continues to fall... so that points to a modem that is bad and must be replaced.

However, if him you continue to have a good signal without problems when the computer is connected directly to the modem, then the model is fine and the problem can probably be with the TC... and additional troubleshooting will be required.

If the modem does not transmit a wireless signal, the TC can be found anywhere you want within reasonable limits... but you do not want to locate the TC on top of the modem or something like that. Leave a margin for products to get some air.

  • computer not automatically standby (formerly titled "impossible computer automatically sleep when it is connected to the internet with modem cable")

Hi, I noticed recently that my computer (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) is unable to sleep automatically when it is connected to the internet with a cable modem. Change the settings for my current power mode and try a different feeding regime (diagrams of Windows XP default power and power management, I created) only solves the problem for 2 days at most. I also tried to change the settings for the other power plans mentioned, and yet once again, the problem was only set for two days at the most. I also tried turning off my computer, restarting my computer, recording Powercfg /Restore Default policies in Run, saving sfc/scannow in Run, and again, I got the same result. Reset and power cycling the modem cable is not helped either. To help you better understand the problem, for example, if I had the date set for the screensaver set to 1 minute, the time for the monitor to turn off set to 2 minutes and time for your computer set to 3 minutes, the screen saver activate after 1 minute, the monitor turns off after 2 minutes, but the computer would not sleep mode after 3 minutes , even after an hour or more. I tried to check the Task Manager, and I have not noticed any process that would be interrupting the day before. However, I noticed that when I turned on the monitor by moving the mouse, even when the computer was unable to sleep and unplugged the ethernet cable from the cable modem and waited, the computer has entered standby as it should have.  I tried to find a solution for more than a week, contributions for this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. (Update: it seems that the problem is something else then my cable modem.)

    Hello

    Thank you for the update.

This behavior can occur because of possible conflicts of third-party software, which includes the third-party security software.

You can also temporarily disable third-party security software and firewalls installed on the system and check the issue.

If disabling the antivirus software solves the problem, you may need to configure the settings of the antivirus as a result program. Please contact the software vendor for assistance in this regard.

Note: be sure to enable the security software on the computer after checking the issue.

Note: When you perform a clean boot, you can activate services for the modem, network card and disable third-party services to check the issue.

Hope the helps of information. Let us know if you need help with Windows related issues. We will be happy to help you.

I have problems with two laptops. For some strange both acquire the bad DHCP, DNS and gateway (server) respond when I try to access the Internet via Wi - Fi. For some reason, this does not happen when I use the LAN (cable) connection.

that is instead to fetch the address: 133.24.56.78 (no real address), the system retrieves / uses 111.22.33.44 (again, not a real address). BTW, these two systems are configured to fetch automatically get IP addresses and DHCP. I tried to fix the connection in both cases, but it did not work.

What can I do to fix this?
