Move and upgrade vCenter 4 to 5.

Hello

We run vCenter 4 with 1 cluster and 2 hypervisor guests in total.

As the server hardware fails constantly, we decided to move the installation of vCenter to another physical server.

We also want to upgrade to version 4 or 5.

So, we want to perform this procedure:

-upgrade to vCenter 4 to 5

-move vCenter Server to different hardware.

What is the best and simplest practical VMware for this task?

How the Configuration Mode link feature is related to this?

(we have already installed successfully vCenter 5 on new material, now we would like to import the old configuration of vCenter 4)

Thank you!

This process is described in the vSphere Upgrade Guide around page 42: "Upgrading to vCenter Server on a different Machine and upgrade the database."

We recently did a host migration for our vCenter (though not 4 or 5), and the only hiccup we had was to make sure that we restarted the vCenter services after the above. Good luck!

  • Move and upgrade the server vCenter Server

I'm about to move our vCenter server and our database out of our ESX cluster. The current server is version 4.0.0 using a database server SQL 2008 32-bit (on a separate server).

I created two new 64-bit servers in 2008, one for vCenter and one for the SQL 2008 64 bit server. Ideally, I would like to move my database from the old SQL Server to the new, installing vCenter 4.1 on the new server and simply point to the migrated database.

My question is, will this work as expected or that I can't point vCenter 4.1 to a database that has been used with vCenter 4.0 because the structure of the db is different? Basically what I need to install vCenter 4.0, that it points to the migrated database and then upgrade to vCenter 4.1? Thank you.

    Hello Dan,.

VCenter Setup will recognize the old DB scheme and modernize the DB accordingly.

You can 'new' installation vCenter and point the installer to the DB migrated using an ODBC connector and the installer will run the scripts to upgrade DB on the DB.

As suggested before, make sure you have a full backup of the DB in which case you would need to return to the upgrade.

  • Difference between patches and upgrades in vCenter Server 4?

We improve just vCenter for version 4.  The ESX hosts are still running ESX 3.5 U5.

When we run the Update Manager, we see that there are two checkboxes - Patches and upgrade.  We assume that the patch is host and upgrade to ESX 3.5 to ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4.  Is this correct?

When we run Manager update with the two boxes checked, it appears the fixes that we must apply for these ESX 3.5 hosts.  However, there is no upgrade poster for us to upgrade to vSphere ESX 3.5 U5.  Are there any suggestions?

    Thank you

    Hi Tony,.

Box upgrade is when you want to scan your host for upgrade compliance - for example if it is 3.5 and want to upgrade to 4.0

Patches box is related to 3.5 and 4.0 host but only for cumulative patches, updates and individual patches.  That's the main difference - change the host of 3.5 to 4.0 version is done by upgrade and spend 3.5 U1 with U2's patch.

If you want to check what patches you need - create base patch dynamic host. Upgrade, you must download iso 4.0 upgrade of host based and clean up with her

  • vSphere Edition 'compatibility' and upgrade from v4 to v5

    Salvation;

We have an environment v4 'Business Plus' existing with two ESXi hosts in a cluster (a 8 CPU license) split in two with distributed switching and HA.

We have another host, that I raised with the v5, but it's only the edition of 'Enterprise '. (4 CPUS).

The plan was whole environment V5 upgrade, using the new host as a Manager, but do not know how I could do this job.

Anyone know if the two editions (Enterprise Plus / business) can coexist in some way?

    Thank you.

    Gregg

The upgrade to vCenter is relatively simple and safe, but like any change, always take backup before starting the upgrade process. There is no problem if vCenter is a physical box, but if it's a virtual machine will be an advantage take a snapshot of the VM before starting the vCenter.

DVS to migration from VSS, you can do even without interruption of service, create a new standard switch, just move some NIC this VSS, create groups of appropriate port and migrate virtual and VMkernels computers.

A final word on vCenter, if your physical box run a 32-bit SO you can't do a upgrade vCenter on-site, from the vCenter 4.1/5.x runs on 64-bit so.

  • Update the host ESX 4.1 before upgrading vCenter 4.0 to 4.1

Someone sees a problem updating my 4.1 ESX hosts and leaving in the former vCenter 4 Update 1 cluster?  I have rebuilt a new server vCenter 4.1 but can't stop the virtual machines and ESX hosts in maintenance until tomorrow night mode.  I want to put the ESX host in maintenance mode, both in the old server vCenter and 4.1 update and move remove/add new vCenter tomorrow night.

You can't manage a host ESXi4.1 with nothing less than vCenter4.1.  If your plan will not work.  You must first upgrade vCenter.

  • Can I restore the backup Windows XP on a new computer with Windows 7 COA and upgrade to Windows 7?

    Original title: upgrade question.

I currently have a PC running XP in a system with an IDE drive. The system has many applications that the company has moved the installation discs, so I need to move the contents of the entire disk to a new system. I was about to do the following:

System backup with a recovery boot disk, in this case a USB.

Restore the entire operating system to a new system that will have a SATA drive in it. The new system will have a COST for Windows 7.

Start the XP and upgrade to Windows 7.

My question is, will it work or the absence of the COA of XP on the new system will prevent me to install?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

Short answer, "no, this will not work."

It is unclear what you mean by 'backup' and 'restore', but it seems that if you are referring to the creation of a disk image or a clone of disk on an external drive and then either restore the image or cloning to the new computer.  Assuming that both of these computers was provided with Windows pre-installed, this process will almost certainly result in a facility that cannot be 'activated '.  In addition, unless the software you use has something like Acronis Universal Restore, restore the image from your old computer to a player in a new computer with a different hardware simply will not work.

In addition, the lack of an XP license is not the issue.  There are several problems with the process you describe, but basically, an "upgrade" from XP to Win 7 requires a "custom installation" which means that applications should be re-installed.

  • Migration and upgrade of databases

    Hello

We intend to migrate from the data center to the new location. The new data center already have the hardware. We must move the dump data and upgrade the database. Our database most are on Oracle

10g solar UNIX and the new material is on Oracle 11.2.0.4 with Linux (Oracle or Redhat Linux). Do the following activity:

    (1) taking the export on the basis of existing data.

    (2) move the dump of the export to the new location, as well as archived data that is stored in the Ribbon. (this is where a suggestion required more about different ways to do it).

    (3) import and the upgrade of the database in the new location.

Might suggest a certain to please the strategy and useful tool which, for this activity.

You should move all the 100 + databases in a window of 48 hours with datapump? It is a command

What is the capacity of the network (i.e. How fat is the pipe) between the two locations and how pieces are? As a general rule, there should be no loss of data or corruption during the transfer of files over a network. The time required for move/upgrade a database of 300G can only be determined by performing a test upgrade that looks close in the middle of production.

  • Problem upgrade vCenter 5.0 to 5.1

I did an update 5.1 on a virtual machine running Vcenter 5.0. The SQL 2008 database resides on another virtual machine. It is a center of test data.

I ran the auditor and it came back fine. VCenter and SSO installed on the same virtual machine.

I installed base SSO. I ran the scripts before you create the database, and users. Installation went well without error.

I've updated the Web Client, but did not check to see if my domain account still works as an administrator.

I have improved the service of inventory without error.

    I upgraded Vcenter without errors.

I have improved my VI Client to 5.1.

I can not access the VI Client with Vcenter. I get an authentication error using my domain account. I tried the admin@System-Domain account. It is said that account is not allowed.

I can connect via the Web client using the admin@System-Domain account. I can't connect in the Web Client with my domain account.

While in the Web Client, she said that the inventory is empty. I don't see any of my hosts or VMs in my test data center.

  • Upgrade to ESXi 5.0 to 5.1 without upgrading vCenter?

Hi everyone is my first post here.

I wonder if I can pass my single host of 5.0 to 5.1 without upgrading vCenter? Basically, what I want to do is upgrade to 5.1 so I can install Windows Server 2012 and trial it. Can I just burn the ISO, boot, the upgrade and the contiune. I've updated the customer to 5.1 already.

P.S. I read a ton of info on updates etc etc, but I just need the answer to this question.

Thanks much for any help you can provide.

    Karl

To add. I tested the upgrade process by installing ESXi 5 in a virtual machine and upgrade to 5.1, it worked. I'm just afraid to do it in my live set up.

According to the matrix of the interoperability of products VMware, you cannot host with vCenter 5.0 5.1 ESXi, had you first upgrade the vCenter server. Another option is to upgrade your host to ESXi 5.0 Update 1, which also supports Windows 2012 as a guest operating system.

  • After upgrading vCenter 5.0 to 5.1 found stored procedure 'purge_stat1_proc '.

    Hi all.

After upgrading vCenter 5.0 to 5.1 found this error in MS SQL 2008 R2 during the performance of work ""past day stats rollup ": "

    Message
Executed as user: xx\yyyy. Stored procedure 'purge_stat1_proc' not found. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 2812).  The step failed.
and http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & externalId = 2006097 there is no stored procedure in vCenter 5.1 purge_stat1_proc installation but job day cumulative stats exist...
Also there is not a SQL script for this procedure in the vCenter Server installation folder in C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\sql.
Anyone have a suggestion? Maybe it's a bug?

The answer lies in the same article that you are looking to:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/documentLinkInt.do?micrositeID=&popup=true&LanguageID=&externalID=2033096

The script of vCenter 5.1 to create this task (job_schedule1_mssql.sql) is supposed to create a job with a single step.  It seems that they have decided to remove the purge step and the rest of the procedure for her, but for some reason, that the work is not always updated and the stage of the procedure call (now missing).

You can fix it by running the script job_schedule1_mssql.sql by the instructions in the article.

  • Upgrading vCenter 4.0 32-bit to 64-bit vCenter 4.1

    Everyone...

Upgrading vCenter vCenter 4.1 to 4.0u1. The current server running vCenter 4.0 u1 is just a Windows 2003 based VM.

Databases supporting vCenter and Update Manager is installed on a physical Server SP3 to SQL 2005 64-bit.

I want to plan and to implement the upgrade as follows:

Remove the current vCenter domain and turned off.

Turn on a new virtual machine running Windows 2008 64 bit and rename it as the old server vCenter.

Add the new vCenter server to the domain

Installing vCenter 4.1 on the new vCenter server and use the existing databases that support

    the old server vCenter.

Use the Update Manager to upgrade vSphere 4.1 on each managed host computers.

What possible questions could meet or must be aware, as I implement this

    upgrade process?

During the installation process and it asks to use an existing database, will be installing

just updated the database to process and store the configuration data of the server vCenter 4.0?

Once the upgrade is complete for the new vCenter server.  I see the same configuration

as I saw in the old server vCenter configuration?

Looking forward to all the world the answers... Thanks in advance!

I agree with Redbaron51.  I used the setting level guide and things worked perfectly.  There is a batch file that backs up the database and converts it to the new 64-bit server.  It was very easy and worked as advertised.
