MSCS Clustering on ESX 3.5 with NFS

Hello

Guys I have advised the installation of MSCS cluster using this article in the production environment

http://TechRepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumid=102 & threadID = 220875 & start = 0 & = glad tag; leftCol

My environment is ESX 3.5 U4, NFS/TCPIP, NetApp. a few questions?

Is this possible in NFS/TCPIP environment?

What efforts copies/taken in charge?

Recommended?

I understand it is not supported and does not work on NFS.

Please provide your comments and reflections

See you soon

AJ

The article describes the use of VMware server, not ESX.  It is using disks shared for clustering, and method of use RDM not supported.  You can create a cluster by using NFS, but you would follow the cluster-in-a-box method, using vmdk shared, which is not a method of care or intended to be used in the production.

you have the beta version of the installation guide? Beta doc PXE boot section was:

    PXE boot

You can use the isolinux / on the image of the DVD ESX for PXE DΘmarrer Installer ESX. An example of following to tftp/pxelinux configuration file:

    VMware-Classic label

    the VMware-Classic menu label

    VMware-Classic/vmlinuz kernel

    Append initrd = VMware-Classic/initrd.img mem = 512M quiet

I saw your post about the problem with NFS running: run. Unless you have changed the processor and added little RAM your system isn't the minimum system requirements for the game. The game needs 4 GB of RAM and you only have 2 GB, and the processor should be 3.0 Ghz but yours has only 2.4 GHz, I have included links below for specifications of your laptop and the NFS: Run required.

  • Upgrade to ESXi (free) 3.5 to ESX 4.1 (with license)

    Hello

Can I switch from ESXi (free) 3.5 to ESX 4.1 (with license)?

Yes, I need to change for ESX ESXi.

    Is possible?

    Thank you

Can I switch from ESXi (free) 3.5 to ESX 4.1 (with license)?

Yes, I need to change for ESX ESXi.

    Is possible?

Either way - ESX, ESXi and ESXi for ESX - requires a new installation of the operating system, there is no way to upgrade (regardless of the licensing). In case you have a data store VMFS on the drive where you install the operating system, you must back up (or migrate) and restore the virtual machine.

I suggest that you create separate logical volumes to the OS (~ 20 GB) and the VMFS. This way you can switch back from ESX to ESXi in the future without the need to evacuate VMs. As you may know, ESX 4.1 is the latest version with the Service Console.

  • Install ESX 3.5 with local storage

I just install ESX 3.5 on a database server that I will use for failover only.  The server has an internal 750 GB internal SATA drive.  I have install ESX 3.5 through the wizard very well.  But when I connect to the new server with the gateway Client, I get an error that says - "VMware ESX Server has no storage persistent." - see attachment.  It gives me the ability to create a data store.  My options are disk/LUN, NFS or diagnosis.  I don't see where to add a local drive as a data store.  What am I missing here?  Is there some partitioning step that I missed when installing ESX.

Those are the IDE drives?  VMFS not supported on the ide.

I also changed the default controllers controls and set left lean & thin right to left analog stick left/right as PRIMARY & I updated lean left & lean right D - pad left/right as SECONDARY controls.

    Hi Zxcvbnma,

    ·         Is the specific issue with only Need for Speed or does happen with other games as well?

If the problem is specific only with Need for Speed, you can try to uninstall the game and reinstall the game and check if it works fine without any problems.

I also suggest that you uninstall Xbox 360 controller drivers and reinstall the drivers that could help you solve the problem.

Check the settings of the game. You can also connect the controller to the other computer and use it and check if the problem still persists.

  • Turn off the power of infrastructure ESX 4.1 with VC as a guest

    Hello

We have 4 guests ESX 4.1 running in a single cluster with VC running as a VM guest.

I was wondering what are the necessary steps safely stop a cluster VMware and environment

So far, I have the following text:

1 connection to the VC server via vSphere client and note of VM guests who have the following VM guests:

    • VMware VC Server
    • Server of DB holding VMware DB
    • Domain controllers

2 judgment of vSphere client using all standard virtual computer guests:

    3. connect to the appropriate host of VM (from the list above) with the root vmware account and stopping the VM guest following in this order:

    • VC Server
    • Server of DB holding VMware DB
    • Domain controllers

It is at this point that I'm not sure-should I then log on to the hosts of the VM using the console and put into mode of maintenance and downtime of the console command line? Or would I have to do that by using the vSphere client?

    Chicken and egg situation

It would be easier and cleaner to my paperwork so I could put the server in maintenance mode and close it from the console / shell / command line (whatever your call him) but I'm not sure commands to do this?

    Maybe I'm wrong all!

In any case, help stop the environment itself would be very helpful!

    Thank you

    John

The steps you mentioned are ok and there is no problem with the closure of the host (s) using the vSphere to all customer. No need to do it from the console.

  • FT clusters supported in VMware stretched with 2ms latency?

A client just wonder if FT is supported in a tense situation where data centers have 2ms max latency?

I could not find this recommendation is subsidiary of millisecond latency < 1ms?

    • At the very least, use 1 GbE NIC for VMware FT logging network. Use 10 GbE NICS for increased bandwidth of FT

    • logging traffic.

    • Make sure that the latency between ESX hosts is sub millisecond latency is recommended for the

    • Network logging FT. Use vmkping to measure latency.

    • VMware vSwitch parameters on the hosts must be as uniform, for example using the same VLAN for VMware ft logging, to make these available hosts for the placement of VMs school enter a VMware® vNetwork Distributed Switch to avoid inconsistencies in the settings of a vSwitch.

If it is better or not is not for me to decide who belongs to the client.

      In any case, two things:

VPLEX is access anywhere, if fail the primary and secondary levels would resume their would be no real performance hit, just for a short period probably. There are 1 million documents on VPLEX there, I suggest you read those.

Lag time, no matter what kind of latency will slow the VMs. latency is nothing more then a 'delay '. So if the latency increases your virtual machine slows down.

    • ESXi5 - problems with NFS and the data copy store

      Hello world

I recently moved into a solution fully virtualized for my network, 3 x 5 ESXi servers running on our GigE network.

First of all, I use all free software from VMware, so vCentre etc is out of the question.

I have major problems when you try to copy files between:

      • NAS (NFS) to ESXi 5 host
      • ESXi host to the NAS (NFS) 5
      • And using VMware converter between ESXi 5 hosts converter Standalone

The problem is that whenever I'm transfer between hosts I am struck with the horrible network performance. Even if I use GigE adapters and switches between my hosts I will receive no more than 12 Mbps speed of transfer real (100 Mbit/s connect?).

On the flipside, if I use virtual guests on the same exact host I can happily transfer data between my NAS (NFS) servers with speeds between 60-150MBps ~ (1000 Mbps).

      Examples:

Speed of 10 Mbps of transfer of ESXi_1 copy OF NFS data store share ~

Server2008 (comments, located on ESXi_1) copy OF NFS 75MBps transfer rate ~.

Server2011 SBS (comments, located on ESXi_2) copy OF Windows share 2008 (ESXi_1) transfer speed 120MBps. ~

ESXi_2 copy OF NFS data store share transfer rate 5MBps ~.

      Attached (wtf.png) example:

I copy a file that is located on our NFS share first, it's a 3 GB file to the copy within guest OS (2008), it is indicated in blue - top speed of 80MBps

I copy the same exact NFS share for the host (datastore1), this is indicated in red - top speed of 7.5Mbps

The third transfer/s (green) is between the customers of windows on different hosts, transfer a 6 GB file as well as a copy of the 360 MB file - transfers two happily send to GigE speeds with a peak around 40MBps

I can reflect these results across the three servers without modification. Copies between you will be able to run well enough (not exactly 100% use of GigE) but at the moment where I try to do something to the data store it will just choke at all about a 100 Mbps connection speed.

The final image (wot.png) confuses me beyond belief. I would try to explain what is happening here:

      • This image shows two times the same exact file transfers, except even machine PHYSICS
      • The first (red) transfer between the ESXi_2 host server and the NFS share using the browser data store and direct download - its top speed is around 8MBps
      • The second (green) transfer between a guest server 2008 running on ESXi_2, download the same file exactly at the exact location using vSphere Client. I mean the same EXACT file; It connects to the NFS drive by the data store ESXi_2 (NFS share).

Why on earth can my comments directly download a file on a data store connected to NFS GigE clocked and yet the same exact host cannot go anywhere near corresponding to these speeds?

As indicated in the title, the problem seems to happen whenever I use ESXi datastore browser on the host computer using vSphere Client or between browser datastore ESXi to/from an NFS share.

No one knows what might happen?

Is there some sort of restriction on the transfer of files between a host and shared NFS ESXi 5? Whence this bottleneck?

Thanks in advance for all the help/ideas that guys can throw my way.

P.S. Sorry for the wall of text, I really wanted to give as much information. as possible.

    • How to configure ESX and vCenter with two areas virtualized?

      Hi all

I'm quite new to VMware please bare with me, I'll try to get to the point.

I am building a new infrastructure for a customer which will look something like the image below...

My questions concern vCenter and the best way to install it and configure it, taking into account the environment below.

      (a) is it possible for vCenter to manage these two areas, even if they are completely separate?

      (b) how to configure the physical server Win 2008 in what concerns an area? If both virtual areas have their own domain controllers is to say 'Live-domain' and 'Test-domain' box Win 2008 won't belong to one, so what do I do with it? I can't join the party to another area because it is not a. And I can't let a working group.

Any advice would be much appreciated

      CMA_MAP.PNG

That sounds right. Yes, the ESX host will meet your virtual domain controller's DNS information. DNS is very important in an active VMware with HA cluster.

Virtual domain controllers (and, as a result, DNS) are fairly mundane, no worries, I designed / management of environments that were 100% virtual (incudling vCenter).

Make sure that you do not enable the option "synchronize time with host" on the virtual domain controller VMware tools. Otherwise, you will have a loop (with VM, VM host synchronization synchronizes with host). The option is disabled by default.
