Multiple NICs on a virtual single linux machine

It seems like it should be simple, but when I assign two adapters for a virtual machine linux simple, the virtual linux machine stops as soon as it finishes the set-up and the fact over and over again endlessly.   He made a clean shutdown, I look at the console, I see it start to stop all the services at the time wherever he gets all a started.

It started as soon as I added a second network adapter, and the problem disappeared as soon as I removed the network card.

What I'm trying to do, is to have a second network adapter on a separate network that I use to communicate with one another physical machine on my network using a static internal ip address.

I have set up a separate virtual switch, which possesses the second network card are entrusted to him.   There is only a single guest that uses this adapter.    Does anyone have any ideas why this would cause CentOS5 keep close and restart constantly?

Sorry, in my previous message, actually one-liner I wasn't very clear.

I mean, what happens when you configure the virtual computer with a second NETWORK adapter, and then restart the virtual machine in Single-user Mode od recovery mode?

Is the virtual machine responds the same way or not?

The idea is to start the VM with less service so that it continues to run and you will be able to do research on the second NETWORK card

    1. use all NICS in a pool and VLANS to separate traffic - or -

2 devote some physical nic to only certain things (VMotion, FT etc..)

We use Dell R710 2 servers with 6 NIC of each.

Our SAN is connected via zFCP iSCSI, see you in the group is therefore only for failover of emergency if environmental FC had to leave for some reason any.

    Hello

Everyone says to separate the service of the VMnetwork console.  If I can separate the traffic of service with one console vlan why separate physically?  If something happens to the service console connection disconnects but my machines always communicate then I would have trouble.  Why not make sure that if the network paths are for machines that I can control the server VM?

Your VMNetwork is one of network environments more hostile within the vNetwork as its arbitrariness and a point of attack if someone breaks into a virtual machine. If you have the virtualization management network attached to your VMNetwork is on, there is a VERY good chance that the pirate VM now will be used to launch an attack against the network of virtualization management. Given the current set of attacks there is a VERY good chance of success. For security reasons, you want your management network virtualization to be separated and protected by a firewall of any other physical and virtual network. Ideally on its own switches with output physical switch VLAN in use. However if you use VLAN physical switch then you put your trust in these spending patterns, so you want to increase your monitoring of these switches.

Since the original post, I combined the iSCSI traffic because it is a failover of emergency only where my zFCP hardware has a problem.  The iSCSI link rarely go to never get used and I didn't spend 2 physical network cards to something that would almost never be used.

You want to spend 2 links for iSCSI, if you still do not have a failover, you can the bandwidth and redundancy. Consider all the links of storage redundancy.

Let me know what you think on the service console.

When you use VLANS in the vNetwork you are automatically protected against most known layer 2 attacks, but in the pNetwork you are confident that your switch configurations you will protect. These configurations have been known to change and not necessarily for the better. Some say, it must break so for that to happen, but 1 problem of configuration and your SC is now attacked. Remember, once the virtualization management networks can be attacked they can probably be broken. I know a pen-Tester, which can do that in a very short time, and they will have your virtual environment.

Protect the machine from service/management console, Client vSphere, vCenter servers as if they were gold, access to them implies access to almost everything. That's why VMware strongly recommends that you create another network of virtualization management a firewall of all systems on your system. That within this firewall that place you jump machines that run all vSphere SDK and vSphere client and that you use something like RDP to access these tools without their execution through your firewall. Make this thing increases the security of your global virtual environment of giant protecting your investment in the current batch of management network attacks. VLANs are not a security tool, they are a tool of separation of network based on the pNetwork is correctly configured, maintained and checked. VLAN security is based on the confidence in your pSwitches not something that is authoritative.

  • He had to set multiple RDM on a virtual machine

    Hello geek,

I'm writing a powercli script that attach multiple RDMs to a virtual machine. I google and a lot of scripts I received yet, but it's not obvious.

I thought to create the csv file containing all the canonical of the RDM and importer names that helps import-CSV, then no idea how to go further.

New drive hard cmdlet will join but how to attach multiple of RDM?

    Please answer

    Thank you

    Asif

The UseCulture switch takes care of different separator characters that exist in different locales (locale).

    Get-Help Import-Csv-parameter UseCulture

The character '%' is an alias for the ForEach-Object cmdlet.

You can check by doing a

    Get-Alias %

The Get-Help and Get-Alias cmdlets are very useful when you use PowerShell.

Another useful is the Get-Member cmdlet, which displays the properties and methods on an object.

  • Prevention of multiple clients, control a virtual machine

I use the VIX API to do a simple set of operations

I open a vm, back to a snaphsot, then turn on the virtual machine and run some commands on it. Finally I close. I have a problem that the virtual machine is accessible by several customers of VIX API - performing the same sequence. Clients are independent of each other. The only shared resource is the virtual machine. I was wondering if it is possible, somehow, to prevent clients from multiple access to the virtual machine at the same time. I want that the whole of the operation back to the snapshot to turn off the virtual machine to be atomic. I see that I can detect the power state and act accordingly, but this leaves a void while I get him back to the snapshot. Is it possible to use the functions WriteVariable and ReadVariable to act as indicators?

Thanks for your help in anticipation!

VIX deosn have some way to lock a virtual computer.  RaedVaraible and WriteVariable (of type VIX_VM_CONFIG_RUNTIME_ONLY) could allow you to put your own advice in place (plenty of room for races but still).  Note that the measurement of these values is in the .vmx file, choose your variables names closely (you won't affect the virtual machine by putting something important) and error recovery can also gets complicated if your application ends messy and does not clear the flag.

  • Remove the NIC of the virtual machine running?

Im trying to remove one NIC from a script and the machine has to be on. I am trying:

    Get-NetworkAdapter $vmname | where {$_.NetworkName - eq "Network 10"} | Remove-NIC

Remove-NetworkAdapter: 2011-09-28 15:59:24 the VM Remove-network card must be in the following State: PoweredOff.
    At line: 1 char: 101
    + Get NetworkAdapter W7-AutoPrv003 | where {$_.NetworkName - eq "Network 10"} | Remove-NIC < < < <
    + CategoryInfo: InvalidOperation: (PoweredOn:PowerState) [Remove-NetworkAdapter], ViError
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId: Common_SharedParameterHelper_VerifyVmIsInState_VmNotInState, VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Cmdlets.Commands.RemoveNetworkAdapter

Would I really thing that there is a way to remove the NETWORK card when the virtual machine is turned on?

    There with the ReconfigVM_Task method.

    $vm = Get-VM MyVM $nic = $vm.ExtensionData.Config.Hardware.Device | where {$_.DeviceInfo.Label -eq "Network adapter 2"}

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec $dev = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualDeviceConfigSpec $dev.operation = "remove" $dev.Device = $nic
    $spec.DeviceChange += $dev

     $vm.ExtensionData.ReconfigVM($spec)

Don't know what the risk is, however.

  • Multiple LAN subnets on a single host

I don't know if I'm in the right group, but I consider this a matter of strategy in order to proceed to the implementation.  We are new to ESX but have completed the training.  We implement a solution in our datacenter networks customers host through SSN.  The question dividing the incoming traffic (for example, RDP and SMTP) for specific cards inside the host.  Keep in mind that there are several virtual machines with each of them with at least a NIC any guidance will be appreciated.

For maximum flexibility, you must configure a vSwitch with multiple NICs (for load balancing and failover) that are attached to a trunk of VLAN (this PDF file can detail it more http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_vlan_wp.pdf )

This will allow you to use the tagging VLAN that I talked about earlier and isolate the computer based virtual on the VLAN (subnet) that you are willing to reside on.

  • Multiple NICs

I have a user who has multiple NICs on their machine. Sometimes remote-scan checks the correct network card, sometimes it isn't. Is there a way to lock Remote-Scan to the network adapter that is saved?

Default remotescan remembers the network adapter selected when it fires. Sometimes remotescan may fireup before that all network cards are online or initialized. There is a directive to say remotescan ini setting delay start giving so I hope that sufficient time for these cards to come. Or if you have any startup scripts, simply put remotescan to the end, etc.

If, for some reason, this card has been disabled remotescan grab just the following in the list. The next time remotescan pulls up, since this new adapter is the last selected, he remembers that one.

Thank you all for your help. I solved this problem by mentioning the HOST in listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files. In fact, I have to assign the static IP address of my Linux machine and unfortunately not to mention the IP address in my two files. It is show HOST = localhost this is why it is forbidden to connect with the other machine. Now I connected successfully and it works fine now.

You mention linux machine IP here.

  • Pop - ups without closing after downloading files using webutil_file_transfer.client_to_as_with_progress on linux machines

We have an Oracle application that runs on windows and linux machines based on the forms. Application server is database to Oracle 11 g and 10g.

There is a feature of the application where the user can download his files to the application server, as well as in the database.

When transfer us files by accessing the application in windows (Internet application), and then download the feature works very well.

When we transfer files by accessing the application on linux machines, then also download files get stored on the database and application server and features works.

However, as soon as the download starts a pop-up is launched by displaying the message like "upload to the application server is in progress."

These pop - ups are not get closed even when the file is downloaded to the application server.

Can you please let me know how to deal with this behavior

Application server is database to Oracle 11 g and 10g.

And you release Forms?  We can only "Assume" you use form 10g since you are using Oracle Application Server (OAS) 10g.  But of course you "Assume" you use OAS 10g since you specifically mentioned.

Since you have a deployed Web app forms, it would be also useful to know-your-client Java and browser versions.

We have an Oracle application that runs on windows and linux machines based on the forms.

When we transfer files by accessing the application on linux machines, then also download files get stored on the database and application server and features works.

However, as soon as the download starts a pop-up is launched by displaying the message like "upload to the application server is in progress."

WebUtil is a single library of Windows.  While some of the methods in the library will work on non-windows clients - they are not guaranteed to work on non-windows clients.

These pop - ups are not get closed even when the file is downloaded to the application server.

Since you are actually able to get this method to work, I suggest you check the version of the Client operating system and if it's Windows, use the Client_To_As_With_Progress() method and if it's not Windows, then simply use the Client_To_AS() method.  The other option would be to implement a Javabean to file transfer (A FTP Java Bean - Oracle Forms PJCs/Java Beans) in your form that works with any version of operating system Client.

  • Tolerance of failure with multiple NICs

Apologize if this has been asked before.

I'll put up a vSphere 5.5 environment and I have NIC 1 GB for each host to devote two NICs per host for tolerance to failures.  I was wondering the best way to set this up to their maximum output.  I have implemented as a Multi - NIC Vmotion?  As noted here: VMware KB: Multiple-NIC in vSphere vMotion 5. Essentially using two groups of ports as FT-1 and FT-2.  Or what I need to do as a Multi-NIC iSCSI with separate vswitches and each vswitch with a Port Group.

    Thanks in advance.

You run into a problem of flow when you use 1 NIC for FT?

Currently FT only supports using a single network adapter (1 G or 10 G)

  • VMware Consolidated Backup, LInux Machines go read-only

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you very much

As a general rule, it is not realistic to adjust the waiting times for the LSI or buslogic drivers scsi as they would need to be recompiled. To my knowledge there is no kernel option, you can pass to them on this issue. Some versions of redhat specifically deal with it is bad and flipping in read-only mode. I think RHEL 4 U4 and precedent are touched by this, U5 has been set, and the problem was inexplicably re-introduced in U6 (I hope those updated numbers are right, I have to look back through my SRs to understand). If I were you, I would look at the upgrade to vSphere 4 that has a couple of cool things.

    1. new options scsi (LSI SAS, paravitual SCSI driver pvscsi virtual controller)

2 VMFS 3.33 (which will require you to reformat your LUN with the new VMFS however) has up-to-date SAN attempts, which means that wait times do not necessarily make the LSI/Buslogic controller in the first place and will be dealt with at the level of the VMFS layer. It is possible that you could put a LUN with the VMFS 3.33 using host vSphere 4.0.0 and not spend the rest of your hosts, but I'm not positive on this one here.

  • Convert the physical Linux machine with VMware Converter Standalone 4.0.1 on VMware Workstation

    Hello

I work in a virtualization project, now I test and I want to test the new version of the converter, because I need to convert some Linux machines and I know that with this version is not difficult.

I do not have the ready virtual infrastructure so I test on a workstation environment. I would like to know if someone has converted a physical Linux machine to virtual and if the destination has VMware workstation 6.5. I know that this is not supported, but this does not mean that you couldn't do.

When I have to specify the type of destination, I got the error that you could see on the photo.

Please let me know if you have tested this before and you know how to solve this problem.

    Thanks in advance!

    See you soon

    Malulas,

    Welcome to the Community Forums.

To do a physical to virtual conversion, you MUST GO to ESX.  It is a requirement under the guidance of the user manual.

If the virtual machine was already in ESX, you might be able to export to a workstation image while the ESX VM is powered off.

    Sorry for the bad news.

  • You can create a view that filters (ESX host) Linux machines on the view of the Infrastructure?

    Hello

We have recently implemented Foglight and VMware plugin. As part of the VMware plugin, Foglight pulls in all the Linux VM machines including the ESX host. Our team of Linux only manages the running redhat Linux hosts. They fail the ESX VM guest. That said, is there a way to create a view that shows only the hosts running redhat Linux?

For example the view of rail infrastructure below contains 88 Linux machines, but nearly half of them are ESX hosts for our Linux team would not see all these. Is it possible to filter these?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

    Tony

The easiest way would be to create a personalized, pair it with Infrastructure and then create a dynamic management component.  This will help create you a rule for "All hosts" where you can find just the hosts that are not of the ESX host and run Linux.

    The query would be:

    detail.topologyTypeName! = "VMWESXServer" & os.longName like «% Linux»
