My desktop shortcuts keep disappearing!

Windows 7 Professional has just been installed on my PC at work. Twice now my desktop shortcuts are gone after the return of the display in standby or sleep mode. Both times seemed to be a Monday afternoon, and it's only the shortcuts to the files on the network drive.

Is this some type of regular cleanup task that can be off?

IE Windows 7 automatically deletes your icons without your permission. This is considered a "function".

Although I personally killed just the maintenance department to deal with this, I asked myself - perhaps change permissions of NTFS security on shortcuts, so that none of the users/groups have access writing/editing (EM right click and select properties from the context menu), would prevent the service to play with them?

You're just jealous because the voices talk to me: P

I was using my computer tonight (normal use, nothing happens out of the unusual, without errors or problems etc.). I shut down the system to go for dinner but later when I got to use again, I started it and connected but were none of my icons on my desktop. I got about 26 icons, 4 included shortcuts 'system' to the computer, the user files, network, trash.

When click with the right button on the desktop, the option is there to add a shortcut, navigation and selecting a file results in nothing, no shortcut is visible. When I go to my desktop to users home directory, in the following location: "C:\Users\loggedonusername\Desktop" most of the shortcuts is visible here (including those above, I added that resulted in anything on the desktop) and I can add more within this directory, but they also do not appear. The 'system' ones (computer, user files, network, trash) still show as checked in the menu of desktop customization, unchecking, reticking, change theme and other options does nothing to restore them on my desk.
Icons/shortcuts on the start menu are fine (visible and functional) - just nothing I try seems to show those on my desk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS - I did a full system scan with the AV, nothing, even with malware/spyware scanners software. I also did a scan with Windows SFC - audit was 100%, no violation error / integrity.

Most likely a minor bug with the CR. After execution of the RC for several months I am now facing two minor problems myself with the Explorer shell... (1) the window 'Opens' is enabled preview pane and no matter what I do, it is not off and (2) I had to rebuild my library because they had all kinds of mix upward on the folders they were supposed to point to (my library of music made for my photos, pictures sharp documents downloads pointed to a nonexistent drive, etc.). The good news? The RC is just the RC and is only temporary :-) Jonathan Matthis aka "7test" on MSN QnA

  • Why my desktop background keep disappearing?

    I have a Dell XPS 12 with Windows 8.

My origins keep deleting themselves and default to a black background Uni. (Several times now), I downloaded an image, I decide that I want as a background. After varying amounts of time, the background will become simply black. But I know that Windows has to somehow recognize the background, because in the Start Menu, it always shows it and if I tab of a program on the office fast enough, it will briefly be (wink) display and then go to the black screen. Icons still work, and no other loss of functionality is present.

There is no compelling reason (such as applications, programs, or other user input) that I'm aware of that would cause this to happen.

    Help!

    Hi ad391970,

The reason for updates make changes on the computer would be some conflicting third-party programs or there might be a corruption in the Windows Update components.

I suggest that you try to install updates by disabling the third-party program conflict and check if it works.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Perform the check and the clean boot if you have the problem.

    1. click on start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.

    User account control permission

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.

    2. in the general tab, click Selective startup.

    3. under Selective startup, clear the check box load startup items.

    4. click on the Services tab, select the hide all Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable all.

    5. click on OK.

    6. When you are prompted, click on restart.

    7. after the computer starts, check if the problem is resolved.

If the problem is resolved to check what is the cause of the problem, referring to the link given below:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Reset the computer to start as usual

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

On the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart.

If the step above does not resolve the issue updates suggest that you try to reset the component of windows update and check if it works.

Check out the link below to find out how to reset the windows component update

How to reset the Windows Update components?

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058

If the step above does not resolve the question suggests that you check in a new user account if you are faced with a similar question. If a face similar to a new user account which means your other user account has been corrupted.

  • Shortcut on the desktop for AVG disappeared

Recently, I noticed that the AVG icon had disappeared. I looked up "administrative rights"; but I got nowhere. should I try to use the system restore and go back to a certain date to try to see if that helps?

  • Desktop shortcuts for items on the network sometimes drives disappear from the Office

I have a number of shortcut icons on my desktop Windows 7 (RC1) to the network elements - some are files on a NAS server, some are mapped as the floppy drives, etc. However, Windows 7 seems to sometimes simply remove all without notice, and I have to recreate all the shortcuts to my NAS articles again.

I wondered at first if this may have been because Windows sometimes would start until all my network devices is available, but when that happens, he scored just correctly icons with a red x to indicate that he could not find them at startup, and as soon as the NAS is available then shortcuts work fine.

However at random intervals, seven of these shortcuts simply disappear from the desktop. All other shortcuts and icons are very good and the mapped drives are always present in my 'Computer' screen - it's just the focused on the NAS shortcuts on the desktop that disappear.

No idea why this is happening?

    André

If you create shortcuts from desktop to removable storage locations such as NAS icons will disappear from time to time because Windows 7 has a built in scheduling the task to clean up unused or broken links.

To prevent the task to run, you must disable the task in the task schedular: Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Task Scheduler
Expand the tree in the left pane until you get to the Task Scheduler Library-Microsoft-Windows-diagnosis.
In the right pane, right click on the named scheduled task, and then click on disable.

  • 3rd party applications stop creating desktop shortcuts

A horse of Trojan and virus completely disabled my browsers, shortcuts, etc..  I just finished restoring my site and everything works except one!

When I run 3rd party applications they not create the desktop icon that runs the application.  I get an error msg '1909 - failed to create the desktop icon.

    Hi Mona,.

    1. have you made changes on the computer before this problem?

    2. you receive an error message or error code?

For some strange reason, just my Google icon keeps disappearing under Favorites. I continue to 'add to Favorites', but in a few days, he disappeared. None of my other favorites are endangered. I have ~ 12 saved favorites so I can keep track of them to see if one of the other go away, but it is only google. I even changed to 'google search' and he's gone too after a day or two. I got this system for 3-4 years and the first time that it happened.

    Any suggestion on what's happening...

    Thank you

    Hi, Lewis S.,.

Shortcuts to sites will initially their own custom icon when you create a shortcut. This icon is called a "favicon.ico" and is stored in the temporary Internet files (TIF) cache, which is where all website files, are stored when you visit them. If the cache is disabled, all custom icons are removed.

You can restore the favorite icons of bookmarking site again. The other method is described below.

Step 1: Locate the favorite on the Temporary Internet Files folder icons.

    a. the default temporary Internet files location is C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

    b. navigate to the location above.

    c. ensure that the hidden files and folders is disabled so that you can access the location.

    Reference: Show hidden files

    d. type fav*.ico in the search field. This will pull up your favorite icons.

    e. copy and paste icons to another folder, such as the C:\Favorites icon.

Follow the instructions below to point the bookmark to the permanent icon file.

    Step 2: Customize icons

    a. open Internet Explorer.

    b. click the Favorites icon.

    c. right-click on the favorite that you want to change icon.

    d. Select Properties.

    e. under the web document tab, click Change icon.

  • wallpaper keeps disappearing in XP

My wallpaper continues to disappear after reboot. He's going to stick around for several times, then disappear. The background color is not affected, and neither are the icons and the taskbar. It's just the image that keeps disappearing.

What is happening with my own photos and the value default ones (all the bmp). I tried to move one of my own pictures (bmp) into the wallpaper folder (C:/Windows) and selecting it from there, but the same thing happens.

The computer is not on a network, and no other user accounts are defined on it.

The only difference is that I have a new monitor. But despite this, the wallpaper will stay for a few days through several resets, then someday it just... disappeared. When I open the display properties, the image is shown as being assigned and even appears in the Preview Panel. By clicking on it, then again restores it immediately on the desktop.

I use Win XP, SP3. Thank you.

I'm sorry to say I think you are a form of Malware running on your system, defeating the wallpaper.

I am running Win XP with Vista Upgrade. All of a sudden my desktop icons keep stepping back to the left side down after each reboot

Try this tutorial. It worked for me when I had Vista 32 bit. I used to have more than 150 shortcuts on deskops, and they tended to move 'by themselves' as you said. This tutorial below worked for me.

    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout-in-Windows-Vista/

Is a 64-bit installation program which I have not tried. I can't guarantee that.

  • All Documents and files of Desktop/shortcuts will miss - restore but still - missing but the properties of the folder indicates the used disk space

I use Windows Vista Home Premium.  I am the only user and gave me administrative prvileges.

I was working on my computer when I decided to look at some of my data to the application.  I have come to C:\Users\MYPROFILE but don't see the AppData folder.  However, all my other files were there (office, Documents, etc.).  I have a click with the button right on my profile and click on the attributes Hidden and hit apply.  He took a few moments he went through all folders of files (you can tell by when it indicates the size).

After this happened, I tried to go back in C:\Users but my profile was gone.

I restarted and when the office came, all my desktop files had disappeared and the shortcut to IE.  When I click on my profile, it was empty with the exception of the default folders.  All default folders were empty of all my data.

I did a restore system a few days ago and my profile came, but it was always empty.  However, when I go to c:\users and right click on my profile and press properties, it shows size 11.5 GB as well as the creation date of February 17, 2009 (which is correct).  However all my data are still missing.  Any ideas?

Display your user folder by deleting a hidden file attribute can be set on the access property page when you right click on your user folder.  Let the net of new low for subfolders and files not hidden attribute when the option is available to you.

To see the hidden files and system under normal circumstances, go to control panel / Folder Options / view and uncheck both options so that they are visible.  This is not your main problem, however, you must remove the attribute hidden in your user folder.
