  I have my doubts that the (10.11.5) software is the problem.  Are you sure that the DVD player is simply not defective?  Have you tried to clean the lens?  What is the State of the disc?

  Your best option may be a date at a bar in engineering of the Apple store for a FREE evaluation.

"" "Insert a disk in the drive (E or F, depending on whether one in use).  I bought a DVD/CD thought exteranl today that might work.  Same error message with the external dvd/cd.  Can hear the disc turning when it is inserted during a short period of time, maybe 20 seconds, then it stops.  Sometimes, the disc is ejected when the error message appears, sometimes not.  Same results even with blank CDs.

I just discovered (after burning 8 copies of the same file) that the film on the DVD does not match what I see on the screen of project.   Go to the Device Manager and remove the drive from the Device Manager list CD/DVD.
  Then access the registry and delete the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters completely from the following registry key values:

  Reboot the laptop and check again.
