  I just tried this and IT WORKED! I don't know how much luck you'll have, but try the Fn key and pressing the up and down arrows while your computer starts. It worked for me. For my Inspiron 1420, I adjusted the brightness, while he was when the screen went black and the words "Microsoft Corporation" above and the Green loading bar going across the screen.   Update on the screen brightness controls; went into the BIOS and reset on off action keys.

  Restarted and there was no change.

  I then uninstalled the drivers for the monitor and rebooted and the brightness setting now works again.
