Need help to recover files that I backed up in Vista, now that I again installed W7

I had Vista Ultimate. I bought W7 home pro upgrade. (ultimate has always been more than I needed)

I backed up the external hard disk Vista computer (I think that I have backed up the entire computer, not just the files = WindowsImageBackup)
then I tried to install the upgrade. (He said I owed a complete new installation, because I was leaving Ultimate pro)
I allowed it.
NOW, I can not access the backup I had Vista.
I need to reinstall Vista from the backup, then JUST save FILES... then reinstall the new W-7?
or can I just access the files I need?

You may need to restore the full backup PC you created in Windows Vista, then make a Windows easy transfer to save your settings and personal files:

http://www.notebooks.com/2009/10/07/using-Windows-easy-transfer-in-Windows-7/

Before you do, try attaching the backup of the computer as a virtual hard disk image and copy your personal files:

First of all, connect the external hard drive where you have the. Disk file hard stored virtual or backup your installation of Windows 7, then turn it on. I use an external USB hard drive.

Click Start, right-click computer and click on manage

In computer management, expand storage , and then click disk management

You should see your external hard drive listed. Click on the Action menu, and then click Attach VHD

Clear the read-only check box, and then click Browse

Browse the external hard drive, open the WindowsImageBackup folder where Backup and Restore stores the system image. Open the desired image you want to copy the files.

Open the folder with the name of backup you should also see the date in the name of the backup

Select the .vhd file bearing the name of digital alpha, and then click Open

Click OK

Windows 7 now detects the VHD file as a hard disk volume.

Once the VHD file is initialized, it will assign a volume name, and you can browse it like any normal hard drive you have installed or connected to your computer. In the screenshot above, I'm full navigation of the hard drive of a computer Windows Vista Edition virtual file, you can see the folders normally found at the root of the drive as users, Windows, program files folders.

When you are finished using the VHD file, simply click the eject button in the notification area and eject the virtual disk file external listed.

Accidentally ran the recovery of the pc... it has released a few files, such as photos, music, documents... ran the system restore, but it will not return after the time I did the recovery... of suggestions on how to recover these files? Thank you

If you click the box in the system restore that says "show restore points more" and still can not go back and recover your files, you can try your luck with some programs 'undelete' out there.  You can find a bunch of them at http://www.download.com .

I would say the lesson here is that it's cheap insurance to get an external hard drive and back up your important data and possibly your system as well.  Heck, you can buy a 16 GB flash drive and do a copy and paste for many things.  A much better solution is to buy an inexpensive external hard drive and a good program of commercial backup (I use Norton Ghost, but there are thousands of others) and set it to make regular backups.  It is the best insurance you can buy.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

  • Recover files that were deleted from the Recycle Bin

I need to recover a word file that has been deleted from the Recycle Bin.  An easy way to do this?

It is not really easy, but it may be possible (depending on whether or not the file has been replaced and a number of other factors).

If you have Vista Business, Vista Ultimate or Vista Enterprise, you can be lucky.  They have so-called saves shadow copies, which are deleted or modified files that can be recovered in case changes/deletions made by mistake.  http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/Windows-Vista/features/shadow-copy.aspx more information about how to use this feature to: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/howdoi/?p=145.

If you have Vista Basic or Premium of Vista, shadow copies is not available; However, there is an alternative that is free and the shadow copies feature called Shadow Explorer. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/recover-files-with-shadow-copies-on-any-version-of-windows-vista/.  Although it will not help you this time, it could very well save you in case this happens again.

In case this does not work (not all files are available through shadow - it occurs periodically), here are some additional free recovery programs that might help:

The files are not really deleted until they are crushed (although they are no longer available through conventional methods).  If you decide to try these recovery programs, you should stop using your drive hard immediately in order not to replace the data that you are trying to recover.  He slave on another PC and launch the recovery of this PC.  Even now you have definitely lost some of them if you use the same PC.  If you can not do this (slave on another PC), you run the risk of overwriting the data with every action you do on the PC (but you may still be able to recover some or most or even all files - it's a matter of luck).

Only you can decide if the data is important enough to take the PC to an expert data recovery to recover files (they will have better programs and hardware to do that none of us do, and I've provided above).  Do NOT go to the Geek Squad or one of these centers of store-, they generally don't know what they are doing - it take for expert data recovery.  It will cost you a little and they generally offer no guarantees.  The decision is yours.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  • Need help to recover after reformatting? Compaq Presario CQ56-109WM Notebook PC with Windows 7...

Recently, my laptop crashed and would ONLY start for "Recovery Manager" with 3 options for "need help immediately!": 1 the Microsoft System Restore (which did NOT work for ANY of the listed restore points), 2. System recovery (or something to that effect, basically to restore it to the State "out-of-box" is the description says) and 3. Reduced Image Recovery (this is the one I used). Before that, I was getting the "Blue Screen of Death quite often, but always maintained with my updates etc and really use that thing especially for social networking sites, search web and music/games.» Also before I used minimized Image Recovery, I backed up my personal files to DVD - R using the index option all the way to the right of the screen in this same recovery manager. I have earlier obtained it can begin to go back to Windows, but most of all wiped... HOWEVER, I noticed that my 'D: Recovery Drive' always has a little more than 2 GB free on a little more than 16. I wonder if I can use this to restore everything I had before as I have "reformatting?" it, or if not, then how do I now do that using these DVD I burned? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but also not a rocket scientist lol and seems to understand top of my head this time... Any help would be GREATLY appreciated I am very nervous now that I've lost EVERYTHING!   ... SOMEBODY PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

Reduced Image Recovery reinstalls Windows and the drivers/software essential, leaving off a large part of the trial version pre-installed from the factory. System recovery reinstalls Windows and all software that came from the factory. If all software is what you are looking for, start to type the F11 key after turning on the laptop and run the system recovery.

If you are looking for your personal files, they should be on the backup dvd. There will be a. EXE file on one of the DVDs, last one I think. Click to start that and it will extract the files to a folder on the laptop.

Minimized, or recovery system formats the partition_that D is where the resident files reinstall them & run from. It remains the same after healing.

  • Crash of Windows 7 - please help on recovering files

I have a HP dv7 laptop that when I uninstall Kaspersky anti virus in order to install Kaspersky Security Suite my system froze requiring a reboot.  But now all I get is blue screen projection system errors.  I ran the Recovery Manager to back up my files, but when I try to retrieve the files on another computer recovery stops working on the 90% mark.  I'm afraid my documents of this laptop until I re - install all software.  I have thousands of slides that I scanned into the computer I need to record and also a file from a scrapbooking software product that I am in the middle of creating a dvd of all the slides which took me several months to do.  Is there a way to backup my files from the command prompt?  Or is there something else I can do?  I went to Best Buy, where I bought the laptop in October 2009 and they tell me that my warranty through them does not have software issues.  The cost for them to retrieve my files would be $150.00 without reinstalling everything.  I don't really have the funds to make them so that any help would be greatly appreciated.  Please give your contribution.

If none of these works use a Linux live CD to access/copy something in Windows 7

If Windows does not start you can use a Linux live CD to access it - but be careful and know what you are doing. You can mess up your Windows installation if you remove things from the computer - if you are not sure that someone else do it.

If you do not have a most popular LiveCD is Ubuntu. Download and burn to a CD using a different computer, then put it in your computer and start him - don't forget to choose the option of trying Ubuntu not make changes to the computer. Then find the files and copy them - you need to search your files in one of the file systems, they will not be in the 'My Documents' folder in Ubuntu. It has a built in CD/DVD burner, or you can copy on an external drive. Confused? That someone else do it.

  • Need help have infected files in the files C:\SysVolInfo and drwtsn32.exe

Since writing in days ago and got the help of support Ben everything went well. Today got on the internet and page keeps telling me to download adobe Flash Player again and it is supposed to be already in my files that I had put them there. Where they went I don't know? My antivirus ran this morning to tell about the infected files in the system volume information files. Presented those avast and have not heard of them. So they are sitting making me crashing. Now, I get an error message about drwtsn32.exe - Postmordem debugger. Type of event: BEX P1drwtsn32.exe etc etc. Help?

Hi and thanks for responding. I thought I was in trouble. I have Windows XP SP3 Home Ed. I went back for the safety of MS for a quick scan Scanner and found no errors. Re-scanned all files with my Avast antivirus and again came to the top with two infected files. I put them in quarantine. Then decided to back the System Configuration utility, run msconfig and that really put everything in order, but still had the crash. Watched the sysconfig utility Services and I saw had Lass of DCOM Server and also drwtsn32.exe process came as error Postmordem debugger in the analysis report. So I made a Safe Mode and reset the permissions for the files. After the reboot, everything is running normal and be online without crashing. I hope Avast gives me a report on these infected files, I had. I'm going to Microsoft Security Essentials for a better security environment. Thanks for the good advice.

  • I needed clean up some files that were my computer so slow. I tried to use Windows Clean, but it was just remove stuff that I stopped it.

I have Windows XP on my computer.

I understand you want to clean up the files because of the slowness.

Deleting files randomly is dangerous and should not be made, unless you know what you're doing.

What version of XP is installed (Home, Pro, Media Center etc.)

    What is own Windows?

A safe way to clean up the files is via the XP Disk Cleanup utility. Cleaned files that don't cause any damage to your computer. If you did that?

In addition, the system restore points how are maintained? Unless you have a particular reason, keeping only the last restore point is sufficient.

    Hope this helps
