Unable to run the system restore, or any audio file...

I am unable to run the system in normal mode or safe restore.  When I try to run rstrui.exe a pop up box appears and wants to know what program I want to run this file.  Also when I go to my control panel I can't open anything even not my add or remove channels I get an error msg saying c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe - application not found - even when im in safe mode appears the same box... help would be appreciated... :-)

It sounds like you lost the file association for .exe files.
Visit the following site and follow the instructions to restore your .exe file associations.  Be sure to read the note at the top that applies specifically to the .exe file associations:

    Hi Annanj,

This can happen when a temporary error occurs, it indicates that one or more authors VSS returned an error. To diagnose the problem, type the following command from an elevated command prompt:

    Vssadmin list writers

    a. Open command prompt by clicking on start prompt by typing in the start search box.

    b. right-click on command prompt and select run as administrator.

    c. type vssadmin list writers and press ENTER.

This should provide information on what writer returned the error. More details about the error must also be registered by this writer in the event log.

  • Analyze the error message and unable to run the system restore.

In an analysis of viruses with Avira, I get the following message and the scan cannot be completed; "The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x0042ff93. Click on OK to terminate the program. "It only just happened without any problems in the past. I have not loaded since the last scan and there is no problems with the pc except that I also tried to restore the system to a date before that happened however it fails.

If you have problems using the Avira antivir then I recommend to remove from the system and download the latest version I m using the same tool and have updated it today

  • I clicked "forget this site", I can cancel it by running the "System Restore" function to retrieve my story?

I clicked "forget this site" and I am looking for a way to undo it. I have heard say there is no way to retrieve the history of a particular site, once it has been deleted, but surely, it leaves some kind of record in the system? I read an article that suggested running the "System Restore" feature which gives me the option to "restore my computer to an earlier time" before that some changes have been made. Would this work?

Hello, windows system restore will not restore the file that contains the history of firefox unfortunately (it's called places.sqlite). you would need a backup of your firefox profile folder to retrieve such data.

Please also update firefox - the version that you are currently using is outdated and affected by many security vulnerabilities.

    Same results every time!

    Help!

    Hi larryburrage,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

2 when was the last time it was working fine?

3 do you have Norton installed on the computer security software?

If you use Norton Security software on the computer then refer to the article below and check if it helps.

    http://Service1.Symantec.com/support/sharedtech.nsf/pfdocs/2005113009323013

If you don't use security software Norton then temporary deactivation of security software installed on the computer and check if it helps.

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time that your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

  • I have XP Professional on my Dell. It appears to load and run the SYSTEM RESTORE, but does not restore to a different date. How can I fix it?

I have Windows XP Professional on my Dell E-310. I got a VIRUS episode 2 weeks ago
and NOW my PC will NOT be reset to a previous RESTORE POINT using System Restore.
    Any Suggestions?

Spybot SD resident and professional SAS are not enough.

If you have been affected by malicious software, the best way to get help is by identifying. Bleeping Computer has created guides large removal on their site, for Trojan horses, etc. (I hope so, Debbie C think not I just spammed forum, which goes against the "Code of conduct").

Once you get all set (and may require a clean install), you must make sure that you have all the latest Micorosft XP patches security installed. In addition, a quality anti-virus program like Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira AntiVir (both free) are essential (hope that is not considered spam, either).

  • A run the system restore, and now my Adobe Acrobat license has exceeded its limit

I tried to restore computer because of a corrupted installation and it deleted Adobe Acrobat, since the system restore did not work, I have reinstalled the operating system, corrected and then installed Adobe Acrobat Professional of XI, entered my license and it comes up with amounts excesses of this license. I would just get the license reactivated. Any help would be appreciated. I tried to call and Adobe is closed on weekends, cat I tried but nobody came online in some time so now, try the forums as they are 24/7.

    Thank you-

You need to talk to Adobe, not users on the forums, because only Adobe can reactivate something on their end.   I guess the numbers increase during the work week.

  • Run the system restore, but has not restored

Tried to launch system restore on different dates in the past and the system response is always the sane who:no changes have been made to your computer. System Restore could not restore your computer about to restore specified. Select a different restore point, and then try to perform the restoration again. I know for a fact that the software has been removed and added ffrom these various points in time? Or restoration is only used for the parameters?

The less obtrusive option is just to do the SR in Safe Mode, since this seems to be the option that solves these problems more reliable system restore (unless something is wrong).

Sooner or later "try it is Safe Mode" will come upwards, in order to see how your system restore performs mode without failure.

Even though Symantec is not installed Mode without failure is sometimes the only way to get SR to work.

If you have Spybot Teatimer will, that could interfere too much, but I don't know if it have an article on this subject.  TeaTimer is also a big consumer of memory virtual (any Windows increases the size of your virtual memory pop - ups?) and, at least for me, Spybot seems find tracking cookies, but some people like it big bunch a lot.

Any kind of real-time protection and monitoring your system by third-party programs may interfere with the restoration of the system, so eliminate all mode safe long enough to make the SR, then restart in Normal Mode.

It is also a work that disturbs and extra to turn off your antiwhatever programs and you will also forget to just turn it back on when finished.

Do, or do not. There is no test.

    Hello snail,

Do a system restore is not a better way to get rid of viruses on your computer. You should start with the execution of an on-line analysis of Windows Onecare on your computer. Follow the link below to run the scan Windows Onecare online on your computer:
