I needed clean up some files that were my computer so slow. I tried to use Windows Clean, but it was just remove stuff that I stopped it.

I have Windows XP on my computer.

I understand you want to clean up the files because of the slowness.

Deleting files randomly is dangerous and should not be made, unless you know what you're doing.

What version of XP is installed (Home, Pro, Media Center etc.)

What is own Windows?

A safe way to clean up the files is via the XP Disk Cleanup utility. Cleaned files that don't cause any damage to your computer. If you did that?

In addition, the system restore points how are maintained? Unless you have a particular reason, keeping only the last restore point is sufficient.

Hope this helps

This error indicates that an application is using this file at this point here. If you are unable to remove it, restart your computer and then try to delete it.

IF YOU ARE NOT SUCCESSFUL WITH THE above METHOD, THEN TRY to USE UNLOCKER, a free application that disables the application using the file that you want to delete.
    Download unlocker from here-http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/
Click on the above link and click on download the newer version on the right side of the screen.

  • I am trying to download Windows 7 but it asks if I want to 32-bit or 64-bit. How can I know that I need?

    What system do need me?

I am trying to download Windows 7 but it asks if I want to 32-bit or 64-bit.  I checked the post of work and then properties, but it does not say what system I use.   Any ideas how?

My PC running the 32-bit version or 64-bit Windows?

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/find-out-32-or-64-bit

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7

Windows 7 64 bit comes in handy when you need to deal with at least 4 GB of RAM or more. Windows 7 32 bit can use up to 3.2 GB of RAM. Because the address space of memory is much larger for 64-bit Windows, this means that you need two times more memory than the 32-bit Windows to accomplish some of the same task, but you are able to do much more, you can have more apps open, do things like run a virus scan in the background it will affect the performance of your system. 64-bit Windows 7 is safer too, malicious code cannot easily infiltrate it, drivers are more reliable because they must be signed before it can work with 64 bit Windows 7.

Regarding compatibility, you need device drivers 64-bit hardware devices, you may have. In addition, there is no 16-bit subsystem in Windows 7 64-bit, which means, your applications must be 32-bit only, not 16-bit Installer or programs uninstaller.

    The upgrade of Windows Vista

When important changes to your computer, for example an upgrade, it is always recommended that you back up your system before installing a new version of Windows. In your case, you can upgrade to Windows 7 depending on the edition and the architecture of Windows Vista, you have installed. If you are running a 32-bit version of Vista and upgrade to a 64-bit (Windows 7 edition) version, you'll have a pure make install, it is the opposite case.

If you are using Windows Vista Home Basic or Premium consumer editions, you can only upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate. In addition, you can make downgrades, which means, if you are running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition now, you cannot downgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. You perform logical upgrades:

Windows Vista Home Basic > Windows 7 Home Basic, Premium or Ultimate

Windows Vista Edition Home Premium > Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate

Windows Vista Business > Windows 7 Professional, enterprise or ultimate edition

Windows Vista Business > Windows 7 Enterprise

Windows Vista Ultimate > Windows 7 Ultimate.

    The upgrade to Windows XP?

Please read these instructions carefully and completely before you begin installing Windows 7: there are important steps that you must follow to upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Windows 7 in order to preserve your files and settings.

Before you begin, you'll need to backup all your data to an external storage device, and you will need all the installation discs for the programs that you want to keep. Please make sure that you have an external hard drive (see details below).

More detailed instructions are available at windows.microsoft.com/upgrade-windows-xp. Here are the basic steps.

    1. start Windows Upgrade Advisor (windows.microsoft.com/upgradeadvisor) to see if there are known issues that may affect the installation and the question of whether you should install the version of 32 or 64 bit Windows 7.

2 back up your files and settings on an external hard drive using Windows Easy Transfer (windows.microsoft.com/windows-easy-transfer). If you do not have an external hard drive, you will not be able to use Windows Easy Transfer. Alternatively, you can copy the files you want to keep on a USB stick, CD or DVD.

    3. you will need to manually reinstall your programs, such as Microsoft Office, after I installed Windows 7. Gather the installation for your programs and all partner/license product key discs. You may be able to download programs from the Internet. For example, Windows Live Messenger can be installed from the download.live.com/messenger.

    4. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in your PC. When asked "which type of installation you want. Click on "Custom (advanced)."

    5. when Windows 7 is installed, use Windows Easy Transfer to restore your files and settings.

If you are not comfortable Windows 7 installation, check with a local retail or the services of the PC company store to see if they offer upgrade services.

  • Need help to recover files that I backed up in Vista, now that I again installed W7

I had Vista Ultimate. I bought W7 home pro upgrade. (ultimate has always been more than I needed)

I backed up the external hard disk Vista computer (I think that I have backed up the entire computer, not just the files = WindowsImageBackup)
then I tried to install the upgrade. (He said I owed a complete new installation, because I was leaving Ultimate pro)
    I allowed it.
NOW, I can not access the backup I had Vista.
I need to reinstall Vista from the backup, then JUST save FILES... then reinstall the new W-7?
or can I just access the files I need?

You may need to restore the full backup PC you created in Windows Vista, then make a Windows easy transfer to save your settings and personal files:

    http://www.notebooks.com/2009/10/07/using-Windows-easy-transfer-in-Windows-7/

Before you do, try attaching the backup of the computer as a virtual hard disk image and copy your personal files:

First of all, connect the external hard drive where you have the. Disk file hard stored virtual or backup your installation of Windows 7, then turn it on. I use an external USB hard drive.

Click Start, right-click computer and click on manage

In computer management, expand storage , and then click disk management

You should see your external hard drive listed. Click on the Action menu, and then click Attach VHD

Clear the read-only check box, and then click Browse

Browse the external hard drive, open the WindowsImageBackup folder where Backup and Restore stores the system image. Open the desired image you want to copy the files.

Open the folder with the name of backup you should also see the date in the name of the backup

Select the .vhd file bearing the name of digital alpha, and then click Open

    Click OK

Windows 7 now detects the VHD file as a hard disk volume.

Once the VHD file is initialized, it will assign a volume name, and you can browse it like any normal hard drive you have installed or connected to your computer. In the screenshot above, I'm full navigation of the hard drive of a computer Windows Vista Edition virtual file, you can see the folders normally found at the root of the drive as users, Windows, program files folders.

When you are finished using the VHD file, simply click the eject button in the notification area and eject the virtual disk file external listed.

  • need names of .dll files that contain icons

I have win7 Home premium. I'm looking to change an icon for one of my pieces of freeware. • I can't open the files with the extension .wmv either... I use Windows XP

When I receive files with file extension wmv I can't open them?  Why?

    Hottaye,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers community.

You use Windows Media Player to access the .wmv file? If this isn't the case, follow these steps:

    1. save the WMV file on your disk.

    2. then, right click, click on Open withand then click Choose default program.

    3. in the open with dialog box, click Windows Media Player, and then click OK.

In case you don't have it:

    Windows Media Player download

You receive an error message?  Can you play other .wmv files that you do not receive as an attachment?  In Windows Media Player, play a different file that uses the same extension of file name as the file that you were using when you received the error message. If the other file plays correctly, then you try to play the original file may be damaged.

I can't wait to hear back on your part.

  • CANNOT write to files in the shared folder of XP on a PC running windows 7 - but good vice versa

I have a laptop under Windows 7 (SP1) and a desktop running XP (SP3).  I have connected both via a wireless network. While I can see and access shared files/folders from one computer to the other computer, I can only read/write files in the shared folder on the portable computer that is running Windows 7.

If I try and change a file in the shared folder from the PC under XP on my laptop, I get the message "this file is set to read-only. Try again with a different name "."  I know that the file is NOT checked for read-only. When I change the name of the file I get the error message "\\Desktop\SharedDocs\filename.doc you are not allowed to save in this location. Contact the administrator for approval.  You want to save in the folder my documents instead? "If I save the file to another location on the laptop under Win7 it save then OK.  I can not just save a modified version of the file in the same shared folder from desktop running XP.
It seems that it must be something to do with permissions and access to the parameters of the desktop running XP but I can not find these. Fairly easy to find in Windows 7.
Finally, I don't have a login/password set for the connection to the computer to Office XP.  I don't have a user name and password for the laptop Win7 but you have turned off password protected sharing.
Anyone have a solution to this?
    Thank you

OK - the problem is now resolved.

I noticed that the read-only for the shared folder has been checked. When I unchecked it and also checked the box "allow network users to change my files" in the shared folder properties/sharing, I was able to modify and save files in the shared folder on my laptop.
It's a little weird because I thought I had done this the other day where the results have been less successful.  Strange.
    Thanks for your help.
