network file names are incorrect

I know this isn't a new problem, but it's one that I just found playing with my network. What I see, it's incorrect file names when I discover a directory of files on another system.

My network consists of three computers: (1) a laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 - bit edition with service pack 2; (2) a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 - bit edition with service pack 1; and (3) a desktop computer running Windows XP Home Edition 32 - bit edition with service pack 3. The two laptops are connected to the network via a wireless connection and the desktop computer is connected via a wired Ethernet connection. All systems are up to date, as of the writing of this message (05/04/2011).

Incorrect file names appear between two laptops, while the XP system sees the correct file names.

To be explicit, let's say I'm on portable 2 and I open the directory Public/Public/Sample image images on laptop 1. the file names of the images I see are incorrect. For example, one of the images is named "Chrysanthemum" but when I open the image I see "stream". Now, the actual image on laptop 1 is called "Creek", but it was misnamed in the directory listing as "Chrysanthemum". So what I actually see what's actually on the laptop 1, but it has the wrong name. Now, this is where it gets weird: the wrong file name, in this case "Chrysanthemum", is actually the name of an image on laptop 2.

This behavior is reflected when I'm on portable 1 and I opened the users/Public/Public/Sample image images on laptop 2. In this case, one of the images is named 'Toco Toucan' but when I open the image I see "Medusa". Now, the actual image on laptop 2 is named "Jellyfish", but it was poorly named in the list as "Toco Toucan" of directories. And once again, in this case 'Toco Toucan' is the name of an image on laptop 1.

The designation of bad is a bit random. In other words, some pictures are named incorrectly, and some are named correctly.

Interestingly, if I find the directories of portable 1 and 2 computers in the XP system, I see the correct file names. And vice versa, if I find the directory from the desktop to a laptop, I see the correct file names. So, the problem seems to be unique for transactions between Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems.

If I create a shortcut of the file name of the image, the properties of the shortcut will reveal the name of the file to the real destination. For example, if I create a shortcut of the Toco Toucan, the properties of the shortcut display \\laptop 2\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures\Jellyfish.jpg.

Looking for some references to this problem on the Internet has been very difficult due to the complexity of the problem, but I could find only one reference which seems to describe the problem, it is however an old reference (April 8, 2007): http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29691878/incorrect-filenames.aspx

There are indeed from the Thumbs.db files in those directories, however, their removal does not correct the problem.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Y at - it a fix for the problem? I can't believe that this problem has not been resolved by Microsoft.

  • Try to restore a lost Thunderbird profile, but can't "move profile" because the file names are too long

I'm having a problem with Thunderbird that is addressed in several comments here and on "mozillaZine", but trying to follow the instructions for fixing it, I ran into a new problem that I see not addressed. The initial problem is that described in this thread, where my files and everything just disappeared, and I am invited to start to create a new profile:

    https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/1040003

Following the links in this thread, I get to this - and since my address book has also apparently gone, I click the internal link to the section titled 'Lost profile':

    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_profile_that_suddenly_disappeared

Step 1 then sent me here:

    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Step 2 on this page says: "Copy the profile folder where you want to store." When I try to do it, however (using Windows Explorer on Windows 7), he gets to halfway through the copy and then hang up because it clashes with a file name that is too long to copy. And according to the prompt that tells me this, there are many more yet to come long file names.

Ignore this error and I just ignore these files? That means the copy of profile won't be complete, which I think would be dangerous or would just cause other errors. Or is there some simpler way quite do what I originally planned to do, which is to recover the profile which has mysteriously disappeared?

Again, I'm under Thunderbird on Windows 7 and it was used for years without ever encountering this extremely irritating glitch. I'll be grateful for any help.

Here are three different approaches, I suggest:

1 see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles and see if you can switch to that you want to use the Profile Manager.

    2. While TB is NOT running, use a prompt with the following commands: Note: place the entire path in quotation marks.

    • CD "the full path of your current profile directory name '.
    • xcopy "the full path of your"good"profile name" / s/h
    • now check with the Windows Explorer, and switch to him as above

3 change "profiles.ini" (using a text editor such as Notepad) to point to the profile 'good '. "profiles.ini" looks like this:

    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile = 1

    [Profile0]
    Name = default
    IsRelative = 1 * change this to 0 *.
Path = yt20rg5n.default * change this to the path and the name of your profile of "good."
    Default = 1

Let me know how it turns out.

  • Binder to move my profile on another computer. Thunderbird file names are too long

Hi, I am trying to copy my profile for a new installation on another computer (win 7 box to win box of 8). In the past, it worked smoothly without any problem (did not have to do it for a few years).

I packed my profile in winRAR and copied over the network to the new box. Then when I tried to UN-package, I get 1 403 error (for example):

Total path and file name length must not exceed 260 characters
The system cannot find the path specified.

  • External hard drive file names are hidden in Vista

I have an external hard drive that I use to view files on several computers on my laptop that is running Windows Vista, the files are displayed in the icon view but with no file name. If I switch to list view, details or tile names appear simply not in one of the icon views. This happens only on my laptop and on this external hard drive.

How can I get the names of files to be displayed in the icon views?

    Scott Harlow

    Hello

    1. don't you make changes on the computer before this problem?

Step 1: Check if the problem persists in the clean boot state.

From your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine if a background program is interfering with your game or program. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot".

    Reference:
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    1. click on start and then click Run.
    2. type msconfig and click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.

    3. click on the tab general, click Normal Startup - load all services and device drivers and then click OK.
    4. When prompted, click on restart to restart the computer.

Step 2: If it helps, try the steps and check them off below.

    a. open the external hard drive and right-click on the empty space and select Customize this folder on the Customize tab select images and videos from the use of this file as a template.
    b. right-click on an empty area of the window and click Show, and then click Hide file names to uncheck.

NOTE: If it is gray to hide file names, so make sure you have either very large icons, large icons, icons or small icons dotted first instead of the list, details, or tiles. (See right screenshot below)

    c. the names of files and folders should now be back.
    d. If you have changed the model folder in step 2, then change to the model file you want or had before.

  • DW CS5 file names are not in the window files?

Hi everyone, it's absolutely makes me the wall now, but when I go to download files, it does not display the file on my remote server name in Dreamweaver CS5 (files window) in some cases! The only way I can locate a file is first find the date/time last modified, make a note of it and find it. It's very embarrassing. Why DW does not display the name of the file in some cases. Thanks much for any help.

PS. This occurs when the files are in a folder, in a folder, in a folder, it is the third file in the folder of the site.

When records are deeply nested, the column displays the file name is not wide enough. You must make the column wide by dragging the separator in the title at the top of the files Panel bar.

  • file names are not displayed under thumbnails

    CS 5

    Mac os 10.6.7

no update available for cs5 or mac os x.

It was working fine until today.  then poof - no file name - they show if I highlight a thumbnail - in selection on the left side table and in the area of meta etc. data - but the text and notation etc under the thumbnails from the main area disappeared.  I tried different readers (to see if 1 cache is maybe corrupted)... and restarted the bridge and the Mac... I checked all preferences and display settings - nothing of what I see to disable file names / sides. I also made that the theme has not been changed.

    any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Ciara

I checked all the preferences and display settings - nothing of what I see to disable file names / sides.

Yet it is in the display settings, although not very clear

Deselect the show of the only miniature option only or press cmd + T.

You probably hit the shortcut cmd + T before by accident. You're not the first and probably not the last or the other did...

  • Where (drive, folder, file name) are database files that store information to catalog such as tags and changed the dates in the 13 elements?

I want just the datebae file which contains the data of the backup catalog.  I can't find it in the 13 elements but could not in 10 items.  Is it hidden in a secret file with a secret name?  Why?

The catalog is a file containing the main database (catalog.pse13db), the cache of thumbnails (thumb.5.cache) and other files and subfolders. To save a catalog, you save the entire catalog with its subfolders. Note that if you do not save the thumbnail cache (which is the largest element in the catalog), it will be rebuilt automatically.

In all versions of elements, Win or Mac, you can find its location on the menu: help/information system.

By default, it is in a folder hidden in Windows.

Why? I don't know, but you can tell Windows Explorer to show hidden files. It is up to you; I always do.

The catalog must always be in the default location? Not at all. You can move it elsewhere. For example, you can maintain your catalogue and your picture library on an external drive. Then, watch as catalog manager being "custom position".

What follows is not in your question, but I assume you are asking only for backup purposes. If you have an external backup system, you must include the catalog folder. It is not enough if you want to restore to another computer or a drive, because the original is dead. The catalog stores the location of the image files with respect to the path, but also for the internal serial number of the drive. Change drive means that all the files appear 'disappeared' or 'disconnected' and you will have to run a procedure to "reconnect". Reconnection is necessary if you are using the internal backup/restore process in the Organizer.

Using Backup, Restore to move the catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later version

If you are not in the case of an accident, but you simply want to update (enclosed updated version PES), the integrated system is ideal.

Other backup systems have their advantages. I use SyncToy Windows after each session of significant change and the backup of the organiser at regular intervals.

  • Changing the file names of the photos used in the projects final cut express

HI, I have a lot of pictures that I've used in some express HD projects final cuts.

File names are not descriptive file name convention, but just standard camera. I want to add descriptive names, which will come out in the finder, but I don't want to damage the projects that I have created. I guess I could change one by one and tell the system where each file. But is there a better way? Thank you!!

If you change the names in the Finder, all clips in your projects will lose the path of the file and you will have to redo the link.

Changing names within the CTF will work OK but will not appear in the Finder, probably it will not work for you.

I suggest you set the browser to display a miniature clip of the photo, that is maybe a solution to easily identify clips.

  • Invalid file names

    Hello

Is anyone able to explain just what is happening with the file names?  I have a directory that has the name of files and subfolders in a meaningful way. However, various manipulative operations copies or other causes mistakes which suggests that file names are too long.

If they are too long, how is it, they are allowed to exist in the first place. and if they exist in one place, why they cannot exist in another?

Some of these error messages saying that the path cannot be more than 260 characters, but when I count the characters of some of the files that were copied successfully, the total far exceeds this figure.

There seems to be a large number of 3rd party applications claiming to overcome this, so I really wonder why Microsoft allowed him to remain a matter for so long?

To answer your question, restriction of the MAX_PATH of 256 characters could be _relative_ in Active Directory so that if you change your working directory to a directory level deep 10, then you have another 256 characters to specify still deeper files... but if you have reached the top of the page try to copy the entire structure You can run out of characters.

Apparently, Microsoft has allowed very long paths with the construction of the "\\?\C:\verylongpath" although I've never tried to use it.  Microsoft has their app "Robocopy" to copy files with deep paths. (Found in the Technical Resource Kit )

Microsoft explanation is in the following article:

"Give names of files, paths, and namespaces.
      <>http://msdn.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247 (VS.85) .aspx #maxpath >

I gave up the second guess Microsoft.

  • RESEARCH ASSISTANT intermittently returns lowercase FILE names

When I use the wizard looks very intermittently, FILE names are all returned in LOWERCASE.  The problem with this is that if I open a file from there and then save it.  The file name is converted into tiny all.  I use Windows XP Professional and DID install Windows Search.  So, to access the Research Assistant, I have to click on the link at the bottom left of the Windows search page.
I've scoured the Internet, but no reference to anyone else having this problem.

    Hello TrudyWalter,

First thing to try would be to rebuild your search index. You can do this:

    ·         Click Start

    ·         Click on Control Panel

    ·         Open Indexing Options

    ·         Click on Advanced

    ·         Click rebuild

    ·         Click OK

    ·         Click on close

You will see a magnifying glass in the task bar that will let you know when it has finished indexing.

If, after the index rebuild you still has the problem, you can try the Windows Search uninstall and then re-install. This can be done:

    ·         Click Start

    ·         Click run

    ·         Type appwiz.cpl

    ·         Click OK

    ·         Click change or remove programs

    ·         Click the Show updates box

    ·         Click the Windows Search 4.0

    ·         Click Remove

To reinstall, follow this link to download Windows Search 4.0:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/choose/windowssearch4.mspx?tab=install%20It

Hope that helps, I look forward to hearing from you.
