Some games always seem to work so the system seems to not work at least. The boot issue still exists. If I use command promt and type regedit it just stops & beeps! The command prompt screen is then unusable?

  It appears from your description of the symptoms, your computer is badly infected. Search carefully for malicious software using the steps on the below link, not ignoring is not the preparatory work. You may need to first run .exe from Doug Knox fix (which isn't a .exe so you can run it).
