New on LM... cloning patterns between ESX servers

I'm not a hardware guy so please forgive the typos or misunderstanding. I have fiber channel storage on my SAN for a server ESX and FC storage allocated to another ESX Server. Each are not able to see the other storage. LM should in order to move the models and configurations? An ESX Server is 8 GB and the other is 32 GB of memory. LM is able to allocate resources between the two?

  • Cloning a VM between ESX servers - new VM is "stuck".

Hi guys since the new boy... hopfully I'm posting in the right place... go easy on me

I have a groups of ESX ESX 3.0 data center wiith 2.

I tried to clone a machine from one group to another and it is stuck at 98%.

In logging, there is one caveat of not being able to see the network 'Virtual Machine '.

If I look at virtual machines in Group1, they are on a different network to group2 - so I guess that's the cause. The newly cloned virtual machine is stuck 'start' (I ticked the box saying early after cloning - in retrospect, I guess it was a mistake)

There is nothing on the console for this virtual machine - totally white/black

I can not however change anything on the VM newly cloned within virtual Center - I can start / stop / edit... can not delete it! -If I right click on most options are greyed out with nothing very interesting to the left. (Add alarm... Snapshot... Add the authorization... .the console... performance report)

    Any suggestions gratefully received

I'd be happy just kill this virtual machine and start over

Philips, you can try the following

-Restart VC server and see if it works.

-Use VI Client to connect directly instead of using VC and see if you get the options according to the needs.

-Use the vmware-cmd commands and see if you are able to stop the virtual machine.

  • New ESX servers

    Hello
I am currently trying to replace my ESX servers that are currently being monitored using vFoglight.
Someone can remind me how to point foglight on the new ESX servers or does it enter its information via the administration server?
    Thank you very much

It is at the level of the vCenter. While the new ESX servers are managed by the vCenter, hen he get them automatically.

  • By comparing the divisions between the 2 esx servers

If I am trying to compare the scores of 2 ESX servers, so I can determine if they have been installed in the same way, what command should I use?  I tried fdisk-lu and while he gives me the partition information, it does not give me the details, I see when installing to/var, / opt, / tmp, etc..

    Thank you.

You can just run "df" and that he will give in bytes (a lot of numbers to count you)!

To find the swap partition, if you have a single keystroke "fdisk-l" OR "fdisk-l | grep swap. "

  • vMotion between ESX 3.5 5.1 ESXi MAchines?

Accoeding to http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php? It is not possible because you cannot manage the ESX 3.5 with vCenter 5.1 - I advise to use VMware Converter to V2V virtual machines to the new environment of 6.1.

  • How to get data from perf of ESX servers when VC is unreachable?

    Hello

I want to get the data of the perf of ESX servers when VC is unreachable. When I try to connect to VC, although the name of username/password is correct, but due to some or the other reason, VC is coming as inaccessible, now in this scenario is it possible for me to get the data from the servers ESX and their virtual machines Perf? How to on this subject, if possible?

    Kind regards

I'm confused by your reference to "profiles"? What do you mean by profile? If you're referring to something called host profiles this function treats remaining with configurations between hosts in a cluster that is compatible with the addition of new hosts in a given cluster. This feature won't be available before vSphere 4.0 and has Nothing to do with performance information.

Please re-read my last comment, if you are looking to retrieve performance data, you must either connect to vCenter or connect to each of the individual hosts to collect this information. I hope it's clear.

  • Differences between ESX and ESXi

    Hai,

As I am new to VI environment I doubt that where features ESX and ESXi are different, it may be stupid but can help me a lot.

    Hello

Please check the link to the differences between ESX and ESXi below.

    http://www.VMware.com/products/vSphere/ESXi-and-ESX/compare.html

Please note ESX is present in version 3.x, 4.x. starting vsphere 5.0, we have only ESXi.

ESXi doesnot have a service console and has the smallest footprint of 70 MB and so is safer and more reliable, because it has a smaller surface set.

Please allow points if you find the article useful.

  • VMotion between ESX 4.1 & ESXi 4.1 down on identical hardware

I did turn ESX 4.1 a few months on 6 Dell R710 servers and have no problem of vmotion, but now I added 2 extra (identical) Dell R710 servers with ESXi 4.1 on them.

The problem I have is that I can't vmotion running servers to the ESXi servers.

Can I vmotion stop server on ESXi servers without problem and running (on ESXi) between these 2 ESXi R710s of vmotion.

Also, I can't vmotion (on ESXi) servers to ESX servers.

I get the same error message, re cpu is different! Although they are not.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this.

This error message occurs generally if guests have different BIOS settings or even different BIOS versions.

  • Physically move the ESX servers

    Hello world

This is a really stupid question, but I hope someone can give me the answer. We have 3 x ESX 3.5 servers and a center of physical vitual server I want to move from one data center to another. We HA activated, and when I put one of the servers into Maintenance mode the virtual machines automatically migrate to the other boxes which is fine. I guess if I stop all VMs, ESX servers can be entered in maintenance mode and the engine off the virtual computer will remain on the server.

If I stop all servers and the virtual Center Server and then turn off the SAN, also are the files of the virtual machine etc. safe on the SAN. My worst fears would be to power everything up and find that I've lost the virtual machine. ;-(

    Thank you

The reason your virtual machines to migrate to other ESX hosts in the cluster when you enter the Maintenance Mode is actually not HA and DRS.  If you configure the DRS in manual mode or disable it just completely you should see is no longer this behavior.

You should just turn off all your virtual machines manually (or using a tool to help automate as PowerCLI) and then go into Maintenance Mode on each of your guests.  Then, you will be able to stop with all the virtual machines that are currently assigned to them, if that is your goal.  From there as much as you ship your SAN and servers correctly it shouldn't be a problem power everything backup.  This assumes that the network portion of the House is in order and that you do not need re - IP all your ESX/VMs hosts once they are placed in the new data center.  If yes then obviously it is going to be a little more complicated.

There are always risks when you physically move servers and the San from one place to the other.  It goes without saying, but try to make sure that you have some kind of environmental protection should there be a major problem.  Things like getting into a car accident or dropping the SAN on ground down as the stairs actually occur then you should try to get a full backup to protect yourself if possible.

  • Moving virtual machines between ESX environments

    Hello-

I understand that when you try to move a virtual machine between two servers to ESX 3.5 disparate, one way to proceed is to use WinSCP to move the files to the machine and then 'register' the machine via the data store on the destination ESX navigation area.  I also read, however, that this practice may not be wise because it is better to execute a command to import, I think that vmkfsutil or something similar to this.  Hope to find confirmation on what would be the best practice in this scenario.

Thank you very much in advance.

  • Maintenance of two without VCenter ESX servers in a SAN environment

    Hello

We are now second ESX 3.5 server to go along with good results that we have obtained from the first server.

Our current server is deployed on a San EVA 4000 and the new server will be deployed in the same storage.

I was wondering if it is safe and of good practice for storage of data even for both ESX servers, even if we don't have a Virtual Center.

The ESX serve standalone, but if something happens to the other server I could simply import the files to another ESX.

The idea is to have another ESX for development and one for the production server. Production ESX should suffer failure, I might just be able to down development machines and put online the production machines.

I know that this must be done with HA and VMotion. But since I'm not licensed Enterprice, I can't do that.

So, basically, the question was I should introduce vdisk to two ESX without Virtual Center?

This will work, but keep in mind if the production machine dies for some reason, the VMDK files may not be in a consistent format to be installed on the development computer.

  • CAN I VMotion between ESX server with they are in different version?

    Hi all

I want to upgrade my 2.5u1 to 2.5u3 vCenter, then upgrade my all the ESX Servers 3.5u1 to 3.5u3. VMFS on storage shared SAN and VMotion already activated. My question is if I upgrade the first server ESX 3.5u1 to 3.5u3, can I use VMotion to migrade the 3.5u1 virtual machine remains in the new 3.5u3 updated? Thank you!

    -david

PS. I had been looking, but too many results or not exactly my scenario. So hard to find one suitable.

Yes and you can even go to 3.0.2 3.5.3 without a problem. Usually, it is the target CPU model that causes pain when he is not the same.

  • New window creates a gap between the Favorites (top) and tabs (bottom)

19/12/14 bug Firefox began to occur:

    • When having only 1 window open and opening tabs behaves normally.
    • However, when you open a new window of the space between the bookmarks (top) and tabs (bottom) spans all windows. Its boring.

So far only challenge is to just close and open 1 single window, or to use the module 'Classic theme restaurateur' and switch the tabs position from the bottom to the top, but all new windows will open the gap again.

    Image below.

Unfortunately, none of these options works, so far, use 'CTR' and turn the legs up (default) allows the opening of new windows without gaps.
Seems to be some sort of bug recently showing on CTR.

You will need to find a way to contact the developer to let them know.

EDIT: It seems to be resolved, seems a new version was released and the problem disappeared. Thank you very much for the help.
