No games (solitaire, etc.) on xp pro

Just bought a new computer pre-loaded with xp pro. But there is no games. I tried "Add / Remove windows components" but the games option is simply not there. This new computer didn't come with any disks, I had to make my own backups when I got it.
However, I have a commercial version of my original xp disc. I can load just the games this and if so, how?

Hi SusanHarries,

·         Where you bought the computer from?

Is it is an installation of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) then it is not possible to use a retail disk for the purpose.

You may need to contact the computer manufacturer or the place where you bought the computer to the disk.

  • Cannot run Microsoft games after upgrading Windows 8 Pro

After you have installed Windows 8 Pro I found my old Microsoft games (Solitaire, etc.) in the Windows.old file and used successfully and Favorites to the start menu.  The next day (after several Windows updates) they would not start in the start menu or from the executable file in the Windows.old folder. Tried to restore the (only) listed restore point but received a message that it cannot restore.  Tried the troubleshooting of compatibility without success. Uninstall the updates and restarted the resolution of compatibility issues, with the same results.  Have right click on executable, open properties and set to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode and run as Administrator without success.  How can I get my games to run on this POS?

You can get the old solitaire and other games back. See

Also note that as Chess software, Chess Titans plays very badly.
There are several good choices like Deep Fritz and Rybka.

  • I lost my favorite game, Solitaire.

I lost my favorite game, Solitaire.  I did the suggested MS site, put in my Windows XP CD, went into Control Panel - Add and remove programs - Windows components - games - verified and installed (more than once!), but it is not yet to find anywhere.  I even searched it on the MS site for a download and no luck.  I have Spider solitaire but I prefer the classic game.  Help someone?  I also tried the system recovery.

A parent has proposed the following:

    See if the game exists:
    C:\Windows\System32\
--> Here you will find "sol.exe" (other games have other names)
If you have found it, you just need to make a shortcut from startmenu, which isn't a big deal.

    Or:
Start--> Run--> type in "sol.exe" (without the quotes, of course)

It worked for me.  Thank you, David!

I'm unable to download games, programs, etc from the internet.  It started a year ago and I still have the problem.  I click on "Download", the dialog box appears, click "run" dialog box appears indicating the time to download, and then click "Run" and the dialog box disappears without ever finishing.  Anyone know what is happening, why and how resolve it.  Please keep in mind I'm not savvy with the computer language and need answers in the form of simple.  Thank you

There is no way to accurately diagnose that lasts a year and with so little information. You should start by ensuring that the computer is free of viruses/malware:

Post back with the results for further assistance.

If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have all your data backed up before taking the machine into a shop.

    Hi rap.

Thanks for the reply with the status of the issue.

Here in this scenario, you need to refresh your computer after the backup of your data. Refresh your PC reinstall Windows and keep your personal files and settings. It also keeps the applications provided with your PC and applications that you have installed in the Windows store.

How to refresh, reset or restore your PC:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-PC

Note: refer to the section "refresh your PC without affecting your files.

Warning: Apps that you have installed Web sites and DVD is deleted. The applications provided with your PC and applications that you have installed in the Windows store will be resettled. Windows puts a list of apps removed on your desktop after you refresh your PC.

If you do not have installation media, you can see the following article from Microsoft Help to create installation media.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

Note: The steps also apply to Windows 8.

How so I just did install windows 7? y at - it something he missed. BTW, I've updated since windows vista 64 to 7 (64) .i also tried the solution of aid it gives to you, which is to go into the Control Panel, click programs, then turn windows features turn on or off, and make sure you check the box that says games, I did that and still no Y_Y games and I really want to play chess , so my questions are what he says. Why have I not games? and is there anyway I can get back them? Thank you

In some versions of Windows 7 games is disabled by default.

You must enter in the Panel - programs and features - windows features option and turn it on.

I had to do it on two machines. I hope this helps.

  • Renamed: Remove WindowsOS games (Spades, Solitaire, etc..)

    Hi guys,.
I have vista home premium... I accidentally deleted my system games! where can I get these games! pls guys that I need help!

    Hey influential:

I assume you mean games that come "installed" with Vista - Solitaire, Purble Place, etc.  If so, you will need to add the games back to your system through Windows.

    1. open the "Control Panel" on your computer.
    2. open the "program and features" since in the control panel.
    3. under "Tasks" in the left pane, click on "Turn Windows features on or off".
4 check the box of "Games" in the "Windows Features" window.
    5. your machine should begin to install all Windows embedded games.

Let me know if it solves your problem.
