Now the icons on the desktop in place between users

I often have to change the screen resolution to test a web design to make sure that it works on multiple monitors.  After getting tired of having my random distributed desktop icons whenever I did, I created a new user and connected to this user to change my resolution.

Imagine my surprise when rear connection my name to user-res usual to find my random icons anyway.

Is there a solution to this unfortunate?

Thank you
Dave Dave

Dave,

This is because the setting of the desktop resolution is by computer. One system affects all user accounts.

To work around the problem, you can use one of these tools available to backup/restore the desktop icons.

  • Tried to turn off my computer and it froze. Now, the desktop does not load and I get a message saying that Windows Explorer is not responding

    Original title: virus Possible?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba laptop. The last time I tried to stop it, it froze (got as far as the last screen showing 'close', then didn't). The next time I turned it on the desktop would not load completely (white screen, no desktop icons, accesses start bar) and if I click on the desktop I get a message saying "Windows Explorer is unresponsive. I tried to scan antivirus, but that also froze. I ran Microsoft defender several times, and it always freezes on C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. While I can access internet Explorer, I can't click on the links that would open a new page (gel once more). Finally I can't yet do a reboot or a full stop. If it's a virus, how can I solve the problem when no anti-virus software is running?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I just moved across the world and have little knowledge of computers (but I'm much less following the instructions!). The last thing I need is for my laptop to be drunk so I can't communicate with the House...

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leave the file system, Web,.
Operational network (Script and behavior are also recommended in Ver 6 +).

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.

Avast - home - free - 7.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the

  • Broken links in the desktop icons

    Hello

I have a problem that arises at a time it is caused by a virus in my computer and eats all my programs. I managed to solve a lot of problems, I now have icons on my desktop, but the links do not work for programs that they guess, nothing happens. I get a message that there is no program associated with the icon.  In order to enter a program to open, I do a right-click on the icon my computer, and then open the program of the left column.

I spoke with a rep at Microsoft on a different issue, and he said he thought that my 'user name' has been altered and that I should change.  I have a new 'user name', but I need to transfer all my programs to the new user to correct broken links.

Any suggestions on how I can fix the link and transfer programs on the new user, as I have no idea? Thank you

  • Windows 7 - How can I get rid of an "All Control Panel items" icon on the desktop?

Only, I've migrated to Vista Ultimate x 64 to Windows 7 Professional x 64.  I used Laplink to move all my users, programs, and settings.  Everything is great, except now there is an icon on the desktop for all my users that I can't get rid of - it connects to the control panel and is called "All Control Panel items" - it cannot be deleted or moved to the Recycle Bin. Make a right click on it brings up a menu with 'open' and 'create a shortcut' by dragging it to the trash does not delete it.

If I am right cick on the desktop and add Control Panel to the items displayed on the desktop, a second control Panel icon appears with the same picture, but the text is just 'control panel '.

I don't know there is a registry key that I have to remove or adjust but after a lot of research can't find anything.

Open the Publisher of the registry (Regedit.exe) and navigate to:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace]

Backup the key by exporting to a REG file.

Expand the branch above and delete the following subkey:

    {21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
(The above is the GUID for "All Control Panel items" Namespace)

Similarly, to remove the entry here (if found)

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace]

  • Programs for the shortcut icons on the desktop of the user different?

My adult son and I are two Admins on what is basically a computer. I try to keep a very clean desktop so that I can easily find any new DOCS or IE shortcuts.
We each have our own connections. He installed games with CD and when I connected and found new icons for its games on my desk, I deleted them. But then he told me that they had disappeared from HIS Office too, so we had to go out of the Recycle Bin.
What is the only way that Windows XP work? I had always thought that each user has been mainly in charge of their own office, so it makes no sense to me.

Everything you see on your screen is just a shortcut or icon of a folder on your system, and there is a folder on the desktop that applies to all users (everyone gets those) and another folder in the office that applies to all users for things that belong to them.

When certain things are installed, they ask if you want the new program will be available for all users or just the current user (logged).

If you install for all users, shortcuts and icons will settle in the all users desktop folder.

If you install for just you, shortcuts and icons will settle in your desktop folder.

What you see on your desktop, it's all desktop users folder and your desktop folder combined.

What your adult son sees on his desk, is the all users desktop folder and its combined desktop folder.

If you install and tell the facility to apply to all users, shortcuts and icons to put in the desktop folder for all users - everyone sees them.

If the installed program shortcuts and icons in the all users desktop folder (and each user sees) and if you remove if from your office, you are also removing the all users desktop folder, then they are removed for everyone.

What you see on your desktop being things just in a folder, you can navigate to your folder office and add/remove things from him, just like any other folder (and therefore cannot your adult son).

If you have access to all the users desktop folder and add/remove things that will affect all the folder on the desktop.

If your installed program does not require and has just put all the stuff in the all users desktop folder (so everyone sees them) and that you don't want to see such things, cut the shortcuts in the all users desktop folder and paste them into your grown son file and then only he will see them.

Don't forget - what you see on your screen are just shortcuts and icons in a folder (s) that you can manipulate using including cut, copy, and paste.

  • Have icons on the desktop that are now shortened mode and can not change them or delete them.

I have icons on my desktop which are now using the shortcut.  I can't remove the stay of icons on the desktop and you can not click on them, and I can't seem to change their return.  How can I fix it?

    Hello

    Try a reboot.

A simple change of name should do the trick, unless of course you use a utility that blocks the efforts.

  • Keep the desktop icons in the same place

How can I keep icons arranged in the same place on the desktop when I stopped and restarted?  I have Vista Home Premium.

    Hello

I suggest you to refer to this link and check if it helps:

    It will be useful.

  • Windows 7 is always moving in the predetermined places icons on the desktop.

Original title : The Windows 7 desktop icons

Using windows 7 Home premium.  I used to organize the icons on my desktop at my convenience and have used this method through earlier versions without any problem.  Now when I open an application (for example a game) and then close, the icons were re-arranged and if you were to draw a horizontal line through the center of the screen all the icons appears above the horizontal line. I now use the larger icons but changed the size of the icons without effect on the problem. I've also updated the driver for the monitor. I put the settings of view to 'align with the grid', 'show the desktop icons' and 'display the Google desktop gadgets '. I have tried log off, reboot, hard reboot to nothing does not.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, I didn't need to apply your suggestions.  While trying to dust on the 20 years of retirement, since I last used the skills of troubleshooting, I noticed something that I had not mentioned either at the bottom of the waa icons re-arranged a horizontal line that was to the toolbar for Lotus Smartsuite.  After a few seconds, the toolbar has gone to the bottom of the screen where it belonged. I remembered that I had problems installation of Lotus and finally had to install it by using the 'administrator' option. Then I closed Smartsuite and tested and icons stayed where I put them. SmartSuite deleted in my menu in msconfig and the problem disappeared.  He is not fixed, but I'm not going to spend $250 + cash for a Lotus compatible with windows7.  The only function of Lotus, I need is 123 and I can open and close when I need it.
