NTFS drive to el captain

I got a disc ntfs 3 TB external that I use for my Mac.  Now, I have determined that it's ntfs, I can't write for her. So my solution is to copy the data to 2 TB hard compatible Apple and reformat the original 3 TB drive from Apple compatible.  The question can I reformat the old drive of 3 TB NTFS for Apple?  Should what format I use? Would it not readable if I plug it into my old Windows machine?

Thank you

The question can I reformat the old drive of 3 TB NTFS for Apple?

Yes. If you want access to read and write for Windows use one of these FAT: MS-DOS (FAT) or ExFAT. For exclusive use on a Mac, use OS X extended (journaled) or (logged, Encrypted).

    Hi all

I found a 320 GB NTFS drive usb3 "Bipra' mark on amazon for £24.  Sounds like all the rest and mac to format those are double this price or usb2 only. They get good reviews, as they seem to contain some Seagate drives.  Can I get this one and just re - format? That would save me quite a quid.  As Mac can't read the NTFS (apparently) can they still reformat them?

Mac can read NTFS disks but impossible, without software, to write about them. Yes, you can use disk utility to reformat the drive Mac OS Extended journaled. If you intend to drive must be bootable OS x, you will also need to partition (a single partition is very well) by using the GUID partition scheme.

Please see the link below regarding this issue.

  • NTFS drive got converted to RAW disk

My NTFS driver converted to RAW and I can't access it, would you please help?

How I can access without lossing my data!

    Hello Mohamed,

Thanks for posting your question on the Microsoft community.

Thank you for details on the issue.

The NTFS file system provides the best performance and security for data on hard disks and partitions or volumes that

the FAT file system used in some earlier versions of Windows.

Raw disk is used to designate a hard disk access to a raw, binary level, under data from partition level and using file system in the MBR.

I suggest you to refer to this article and check if it helps.
    Reference:
Convert a hard disk or partition to NTFS format
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/convert-hard-disk-partition-NTFS-format#1TC=Windows-7

    Important notes:
After you convert a partition to the NTFS format, you cannot convert it back. If you want to reuse FAT filesystem on the partition, you will need to reformat the partition, which erases all data on it.

Some earlier versions of Windows cannot read data on local NTFS partitions. If you need to use an earlier version of Windows to access a partition on the computer, do not convert it to NTFS.

Although the risk of corruption or loss of data during a conversion is minimal, you must back up all data on the partition before you begin.

    I hope this information helps.

Note that if your flash drive is 8 GB or less, there is really no advantage to NTFS.

  • Install Windows 8 automatically formats the hard drive? If this isn't the case, I should format it FAT or NTFS drive before installing Win/8?

Install Windows 8 automatically formats the hard drive?  If this isn't the case, I should format it FAT or NTFS drive before installing Win/8?

No, this isn't format the hard drive, what's done is put your existing version of Windows in a folder called "windows.old", it indeed erases old files of version and folders, leaving free space on the existing partition "NTFS" (formerly ocupied by your previous version of windows) in which is installed Windows 8.

And "NTFS" is the only file system that supports Windows 8.

  • MacBook Air external NTFS drive reading

HI, this is my first post.

My wife has a MacBook Air 13 "display mid 2013 running Yosemite OSX v 10.10.5

I'm trying to read and then copy the files from a NTFS formatted drive that I use on my Win7 machine. I'm trying to transfer files from the PC to the Mac.

I can see the player in the utility tool drive of Mac but that you do not see the drive in Finder. I think I have the configuration of disk NTFS (made in Windows) share anyone can change the disc.

I saw in several places that Yosemite be at least able to read NTFS files. I'm not trying to write to the disk, only to read.

Any suggestions? I would stay with NTFS (compared to exFAT) for purposes of reliability if possible.

    Thank you.

Check the settings on the sidebar of the Finder preferences and general tabs. If they are configured properly (a shared drive on a network will be a connected server), try to fix the PC.

To connect to a network drive, use the connection to the server command in the Finder menu go.

  • ESX 3.5 and ntfs drive.

guys, I just installed 3.5 on my 'old win 2003' server so storage is about 1 t on an ntfs partition, but ESX did not recognize the partion; I use fstab to do this with the same result. "doesn't recognize ntfs." Y at - there no way to get around this all data is present in this drive and it is imperative that I make it work with my virtual machine, but VM will not see because the server host itself does not. I thought to copy the data off of it and reformat the drive and handed over the data. But it's a lot of work, and I talk about 500 GB of data. In addition, I want to leave as ntfs, as windows and Linux, see this parition.

    any help appreciated

    blog: pctechtips.org

If you use ESX 4.x/vmfs/devices/disques/le name is different.

    Check the right name.

Also if you have ESX 3.x please keep in mind that the name is correct (use the tab to expand the name of the device).

    Hi Teltom1,

    ·         What is the brand and model of the computer?

Yes, you can have Windows XP and Windows 7 in dual boot on your computer.

However, the first thing you would do is to check if Windows 7 can be installed on your computer. Check out the following link to search for the same thing.

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - download - Microsoft Windows

If so, you can create the necessary partition. Read the following article.

    Hello

On Linux systems, you are able to read the NTFS file, it should work without problem.

If you want to write data to an NTFS drive, you need a driver.

  • Why are usb flash drives not NTFS formattable?

Hi I have a few usb2 flash drives. Is there a reason they seem to not format it in NTFS? I can only select FAT32. I have maybe more old stock... Win XP Home SP3 and Vista Home Premium 64 - bit SP2.

    I have:

-Lexar JumpDrive VE: 8 GB - reading 12 MBs, write 3 MBs

-Sony Micro Vault Click (USM16GL): 16 GB - reading 18 MBs, writing 5 MBs

    -Patriot Memory bolt-

    PSF32GBTUSB: 32 GB - read 30 MBs, write 12 MBs

Are SSD drives in the same way? I thought that SSDS have been NTSF.

    Thank you.

First of all, the format is NTFS, not NTFS.  Secondly, it should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to format as NTFS drives - I just grabbed one of mine to random (8 GB PNY) and was able to format to NTFS.  You may need to use disk management to remove existing partitions first.
