Hey MJ4586

This should be ok, as long as it's a microsoft dvd vista not an oem manufacturers recovery disk

your product key determines which version of vista is installed from the microsoft vista dvd

You can still order replacement from sony for a nominal cost recovery disks

  • Restore backup files after the new installation of Vista

I recently had to replace my main hard drive as it has completely crashed and burned.  Fortunately, I thought, I had been diligently backing up to an external hard drive.   So after replaced by a fresh hard drive and a new installation of Vista, I thought I could just restore these files from backup... but no luck.  New Vista does not recognize the old Vista backup.  And it will allow me to migrate these files in any usable fashion.  Is it possible for me to get the new Vista installation to access these backups from the previous installation of Vista?

    Hi Allisonerik,

    (1) what happens when you try to restore?

    (2) you get an error message?

    (3) was it a file, or a backup system image?

I want to clarify if your backup media (external hard drive) is recognizing in Windows.

Method 1: Put the computer to boot and then check to see if you can restore

Follow step 1 in the link below,
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Important: n ' forget not to put the computer to a normal startup follow step 7 in the link.

Method 2: Check your external hard drive to find errors

Note: CHKDSK would attempt to recover bad sectors on the hard disk, in the course of this process there are chances of DATA loss from that particular area.

Helping a friend clean an old computer.  said it ws no problem.  Laptop filled with viruses.  I cleaned then say that Service Pak 1 necessary to download.  I did it and now the laptop does not restart

Follow these steps to try to solve your problems of boot.

    Restore point:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/

Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.

Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:

Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.

When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.

Link above shows what the process looks like and a manual, it load the repair options.

NeoSmart containing the content of the Windows Vista DVD 'Recovery Centre', as we refer to him. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.

It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.

You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.

It is NOT a disc of resettlement.

  • New installation of Vista recovery drive...

    Hello
I have a laptop HP Pavilion-DV5 comes with windows vista... It has 2 drives C and d. C has windows disk and all the other stuff and D is a recovery drive with almost 8 GB of data in it. I'm new on recovery and other things and I know its possible to reinstall windows, but I want something else...

I want to install windows 7 in my C drive after FORMATTING drive C (no road of course...) and I want to keep the option of vista recovery because it is after all ORIGINAL windows... Is it possible to do? I mean what happens if I install windows 7 and when I want my windows vista back, is possible to install from recovery drive?

    Concerning

Once format you the recovery usually partition C: does not work. Better to burn your recovery disc set at onhand in case you want to roll back to Vista. Use HP Recovery Manager in your Start menu to burn the game using DVD + R, no record of rewritteable. Usually requires only 2 DVD.

  • New installation of Vista on Satellite A100

    Hello

I just want to know how to install a clean OS (Vista) on my laptop. Can I use the disk at any time to upgrade?
    What problems are possible?

    Concerning
    Rambo

    Hello!

Of course, you can take the drive at any time to upgrade to Microsoft because I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work.
    Isn t it then? ;)

Only, you must boot from the disk and follow the instructions on the screen.
After that, you must download and install all the drivers and tools of Toshiba.
    http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com-online decision-making supported Downloads & => Download drivers

At the end I can say s the same as the recovery disk but the recovery disk saves time because all the drivers and tools are already preinstalled.

    Good bye

  • How big a new installation of Vista can be?

    Hello!

I got vista home preimum since a few years ago, I bought the computer. My C drive at that time had been 33 GB and I got loads of programs installed including the images and music and so on. After all these years, the hard drive kept filling so I plan to do a new install.

This time, I made a partition more than 55 GB to the C drive. After a clean install of windows SP1 and SP2, it takes a huge 33 GB.  I wonder how is this possible and what should I do to clean space as I still install to another required softwar. Most important question yet, that is, is it possible for windows vista be as large as that?

    Hello

You have received the Toshiba Recovery CD. Right?
On this recovery CD, you will find the image of Toshiba.
It is a package that contains the OS, drivers Toshiba, tools and additional software.

Just says that the recovery CD supports all applications that are / have been preinstalled on your laptop.
You have to boot from the recovery CD and the laptop will be set to the factory settings.
This means that you will get all THE programs that were pre-installed at the beginning!

So, I wonder were the problem is?  :|

    Hello

There's a photo guide based on the recovery of your model here...

    http://www.Sony-Asia.com/support/tutorial/381906/product/VGN-fz18g

If you cannot use this method because what did your friend, your options are...

    • Pay Sony for media recovery
    • A base Windows installation followed by installing specific Sony drivers and software from their Web site.

If you walk down the road of the latter, I would say that, if possible, before you begin reinstalling Windows you download at least the Ethernet drivers and wireless and save in, for example, a USB key. Start your drivers to search for them (and other) here...

    http://www.Sony-Asia.com/support/product/VGN-fz18g/FAQ

.. everything will be difficult to download if drivers that allow access to the internet are not native to a new installation of Windows.

Your principled stand against Sony charges for media recovery is, in my opinion, wrong. As I already said twice...

If Sony did not provide recovery media that they have provided the means to create them

If you lost or do not burn them and messed up your recovery partition, it's not for lack of Sony.

My serious recommendation is to accept a fee of Sony for the recovery media. It will make life much simpler for you. For this reason alone, it is probably useful tax, especially considering that you're obviously not a user advanced. Otherwise, why ask the help of a friend and ask for help on this forum?

I suspect that the links I've seen on this website are actually only valid for Windows 7 media images. If you do not buy the recovery media and go with an iso image download Vista Home Premium, I have to warn about the following...

    • The legality of this is, at best, questionable
    • If it's not genuine Microsoft media you might end by in an even bigger mess (if it works at all)

    Tricky

  • How to reinstall the Windows 7 upgrade on vista for new installation or in the event of system failure?

I love periodically re - install a new operating system after reformatting hadr drive. In the past it was the of syetem of full operation and not just an upgrade. I have to be sure that it is not complicated, as I want to install the upgrade to Windows 7 (family pack) on 3 PC/laptops running Vista. I would upgrade as detailed instructions on how I would do a new installation using the Windows 7. This is important because I don't want to create a nightmarish experience of backup, install the original operating system, install the upgrade, etc. etc. etc.

If you upgrade a computer Vista Win7 and need or want to do a clean install (or repair install) of Windows, you will need to reinstall Vista and then switch to Win7 again.

Your question has nothing to do with Windows Update. Ask questions about the upgrade instead: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/threads ~ Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (that is to say, mail, security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ WARNING: MS MVPs represent or work for Microsoft

    Hello

strange that you can request that

HP computers have been known to not let you install Vista on a non HP bought replacement hard drive

There were a few posters with this problem here

If the OEM disc for this particular laptop, you should be able to reinstall it as many times as you want as long as you have not changed the main material (the motherboard)

You can change the hard drives, RAM, etc.

I presume that you boot from the Vista DVD
