Old Windows files
I installed Windows 7 on my computer about a year ago. Can I remove all my old windows of my computer files without causing a problem?
Sure thing. It's absolutely perfect just delete the folder. For total peace of mind, I would recommend just send to the trash first. This way, you know that if you don't need to make it back for some reason, you can. Then later you can simply empty the trash once you don't know there is no reason to keep.
Another way is to use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool. In your Start menu, type 'clean' and the search results will find "Disk Cleanup". After it analyzes, you may need to click the button below for cleaning for all users files, so that it can watch anywhere to more than just your user account. It can then clean the old install files.

I use an older Dell that was handed to them. There are several problems with it and I finally reinstalled winows vista home and worked my way through the updates. Now, the system works well for me but the hard disk is almost full. When I look at the pie it shows post-colonial windows most of the space. I think I should remove the old windows files. Any help? Thank you.

Use Disk Cleanup to remove that.Type 'disk cleanup' in the box Start Menu search, and then run this application. It will give you several options then to clean up the files on your computer. What is old compressed files. can I delete them and any danger ot my PC
I have the old windows files compressed in my pc. I want to delete them. Is it safe to do so.
Hello
What exactly do you mean by the old compressed Windows files?
If there is no concern for data or if it is not a Windows system file you can go ahead and delete the file.

I can´t remove old windows
Frank. I tried to remove old windows as you sugested but the cleanmgr does not have the ability to clean this specific folder in my computer located on the C drive. It search the disc and just give a few other files such as temporary files, etc. The old windows file has 26 GB and it's as much space. What did I miss? Thank you.
Have you tried simply delete? Seems too simple. However, I know that I got rid of my windows.old and did not use the cleanup utility. However, I may have just moved to an additional drive and Chantilly drive, don't remember the hand and cannot test since it has now disappeared.

My old Windows XP no longer works correctly - it would start to Windows, but that restart. Otherwise, all data and system files on the hard disk are completely legible [no error reported by various scans].
I made a copy of that old hard drive [with the problematic Windows XP] on a partition of my drive hard [second] another [using EASEUS Partition Master to copy the whole thing - it created an image of all the old hard disk on a special partition of the second hard disk].
That I took a third hard drive and installed a new Windows XP [SP2] on it. How can I transfer my files and settings from this partition of the second hard disk [which is the image of the original hard drive] third hard disk [which I now use as the bootable hard disk instead of the original one]?
Can I use "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" for whom? If so, how?
AVI,
I think it's a little late for the transfer Assistant. You should use it while the other drive has been started. But you can try the wizard.
Run it and tell him that you are on the new PC.
So say no to create a wizard disk.
Then on the location of the files screen, select other and see if it will let you access the info on your another drive.
In my view, it will look for the file in the wizard, but it is worth it.If this does not work then you need to just reinstall your programs and manually copy the data to your new drive. Typing of my new Windows 7 64 bit and love it! Soli Deo Gloria!

adding new files or remove the old Windows Media Player files. (Vista)
Since June 2010, I was not able to add new files or remove the old Windows Media Player files. I can click on a new file and play using WMP or add to a playlist that is currently playing, but it does not recognize that it was added after as I close the program and re-open it. Or I can delete the files that no longer exist on my computer but WMP always has them as my files. When I click on add new media, it recognizes the right amount of files I would be adding, says to add them and then nothing is there.
Your media library has probably been corrupted. To reset, follow the instructions for WMP 11 Vista at http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary . Note the reset of the library will make you lose all the counts to play and possibly ratings too. Tim Baets

Vista. Can reinstalled I retrieve files and old Windows programs?
I recently reinstalled Vista and had the impression that I could go into the old windows and retrieve what I wanted. I can't understand how to do this. Something told me to make a backup of the disc before the facilities, but obviously I didn't.
You can NOT retrieve OPrograms.
They must be reinstalled.
Find a windows.old folder, because we don't know exactly how you have installed.

The old empty data Windows, file not found
Update for Windows XP and Windows Vista. The program was supposed to save all outlook information in a file of "old windows" folder (ie: Inbox, calendar, contacts) but all the "old windows" folders were empty. This has happened with all users. Even with all the word documents and excel... etc.
Is it possible to recover all these old information as solving the problems of import did not work (following all the instructions to a "T" online.
Unless you format the C: drive during the installation of Vista and 7, could not remove the files in the folder Windows.old. So, I don't know why this is happening to you.
In any case, there is some file recovery software available on the market that can be useful to recover files. For example, the Recuva . It is free and downloadable here http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download . It contributes to the recovery of deleted files, but it has some limitations and cannot recover everything and is based on many technical issues, such as, if the hard disk cluster was crushed, then, recovery is impossible. Not only this software but also any recovery software has this kind of limitations, and indeed there is no such perfect software available which can guarantee 100% of successful recovery. However, sometimes this software types work very well. -

IM in the treatment of deletion of unnecessary files free space on my pc, but I like to know what to delete in old.windows and what not to touch
Hello
Method 1:
In Windows Explorer, open the folder Windows.old.
Find the users folder and find the username that you used before. If you had a download folder, then take a look at it also. (Downloads\my Documents, my music, my pictures, my videos)
Browse documents, photos, music files and other downloads you want to keep.
Tranfer of files that you have decided to keep in a folder outside the Windows.old folder.
When you are finished, you can delete the Windows.old folder to reclaim the space. Don't forget and the trash and inspect the files there. Once you have completed your inspection of the files in the trash, which you can click Empty trash.
Method 2: (if the old files are not important to you)
Click the Windows Orb-> all programs-> click on Accessories-> system folder-> disk cleanup tools. Who calls a dialog window.
Select the drive which contains the .old top files and click OK.
Once complete the system scan, check the box to clean up the system files at the bottom of the dialog window.
In the next dialog that opens, select the drive that contains the .old on new files and click OK.
Your operating system will do another scan and present you with another dialog box containing a list of checkboxes.
See the list and select the one that says older versions of windows and click OK. Should allow you to find some drive capacity.
Best regards
ERICO

Removal of the old update files
I moved from Vista to Windows 7 (downloaded myself). I am concerned about all the old backup files I have on my computer. How can I determine what I have and how to remove them. I did a deletion of hotfix files Backup on my XP, such as recommended by someone in this forum, and it worked. Should I delete the old files of backup for Vista and Windows 7?
Thank you. Pat patricia Bern Bern
Hello, once again. If you have upgraded to Win7, a lot depends on how you did the upgrade. Your best bet would be to repost your question here, Pat: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7install/threads

We have received a Windows XP laptop from a friend and use Outlook Express for e-mail. We had a number of other things such as pilots with the laptop but not the Windows CD. Then we wanted to reduce the size of a jpg image and I wanted to use MS Photo Editor to do what I then read on the Microsoft site that I could get by installing from any Windows CD. Therefore, I used an old Windows XP CD from another PC, choose to install an optional component and chose as accessories to the next screen, ensure that all other options were struck down, assuming that so they would simply not be installed. One of them was Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. Instead of THIS the wizard DELETED Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. When I tried to get him back by checking these options, asked me for the 2nd day of the original installation CD - which of course, I did not! I have managed to re - download IE8 from Microsoft Download site, but of course do that for Outlook Express - and we don't have Office on this computer: (.) Help! (a) is it possible to reverse this process to remove/uninstall Outlook Express? (b) we now lost all our emails? (c) I already tried to go back to a previous good configuration, but that has not worked.
Thank you in advance for advice, answers or help.
First, make sure that OE has actually disappeared. Go to start | Run and paste this and see if OE starts:
"c:\program files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe".
Including the quotes and see if OE starts. Very often "withdrawal" OE removes just the shortcut to it.
If this does not work, you can try reinstalling XP SP3 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3), but you should probably uninstall IE8 first and then reinstall it later.
You can also go to the c:\windows\inf directory and locate the msoe5.inf file and right-click on it and choose Install and see if that fixes things.
See if that works.

My PC has a virus; My anti virus would not repair it... After doing a clean install of Windows XP, I remember reading that I can delete a file named 'old machine' if the new installation worked. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials... For 3 days, everything worked was great until this evening...
Tonight, I ran an update of virus definitions and then run the 'full' scan Microsoft Security Essentials has notified me that I had a few threats. There was also a warning on a temporary file and asked if I wanted to send it to Microsoft I did...I am trying to be proactive and prevention viruses take over this machine again... I remembered reading after installation 'own' that I should remove the file 'old Machine' if the computer works well after the clean install? .. .also had a warning on a temporary file.Any idea where I can find the 'old machine' file; (I thought the clean install would remove all)... I did a search on my computer and come with nothingHelp, please!...Hello
Step 1: You can remove it in c:/Windows. With the help of old cleaning disc.
In the disk cleanup, select the previous installation of windows. Put a check mark to remove it.
Note: this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
