  • Reconfigure RAID (Online Capacity Expansion) does not work for non Dell drives in the bios and is not available in OMSA for VMWare

VMWare users have found a solution for the following?

Readers of PERC H700 and H800 (firmware current 12.10.4 - 0001 A10, r610 servers) allow the user (in the bios during startup) to create new virtual disks using non Dell drives, but you cannot expand a virtual disk existing readers not Dell, when in the bios.  The option is grayed out.

OMSA for Windows bypasses it.  Virtual disk | Tasks | Reconfigure can do online capacity expansion and accepts disks not Dell for this.

Problem is OMSA to VMWare ESXi (v7.2, the current version and older versions) doesn't have a virtual disk tasks fall to the bottom.  You can not even a hard drive flashes.  (VMWare ESXi = v5.1)

The only solution we can think of is to have two drive arrays connected to the computer, and create a simple Windows with OMSA, boot in Windows Server to expand the virtual disk using OMSA for Windows.

I would be interested in the comments of others, including those of Dell.  We spent hours on the phone with Dell; This seems to be the only solution.  (Yes, Dell released a firmware version last year that has ceased blocking non Dell readers, but it only works for the creation of a new virtual disk, do not expanding one existing).

The firmware update the unlocked non certified discs was in July 2010 (two years ago).  No latest updates seem to speak of changes/updates to update that.

I don't know why uncertified discs would be blocked for a single operation (expansion/reconfigure) - are get you certain types of message that certainly is the case?  Did you do that with certified readers?  Last I heard, Dell had a firmware update in the works that would allow an extension to get the CTRL-R utility, where it historically could not be done from there.  12.10.4 as of 2012, I guess (if the Dell guy who told me he rode was OK) this update has not been released yet... However, I could be wrong.  I don't have a H700 to test with, but you can try OMSA live as an alternative to the construction of a temporary Windows Server to try the expansion of the OMSA.

  • OpenManage for VMWare ESXi has no possibility of tasks of virtual disk

OMSA v 7.1 and 7.2 for Windows (and earlier versions) allow the user to perform many tasks on virtual disks, including reconfiguring - expand a RAID array with a new drive.

This is not true for managing open for VMWare ESXi - although you can monitor the status of the RAID and disks with the browser of the OMSA interface type, you cannot perform tasks - can not even make a high beam Flash.

It is a huge problem, because the PERC controllers (H700 and H800, for example) don't allow you to develop virtual using hard drives not Dell disks when you try this during startup in the bios.  (These controllers only allows you to create new virtual disks using drives not Dell).

This test was conducted using the latest firmware (12.10.4 - 0001 A10) and drivers for the H700 and H800 and multi-server r610 ESXi 5.1.

Other people with VMWare have been affected by the present?  The only solution is to have two player networks connected to the computer, and create a simple Windows with OMSA, boot in Windows Server to expand the table using OMSA for Windows.

Yes.  It came through a discussion in the Dell | Servers | Discussion of the RAID community.

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../20263442.aspx

There is a CD bootable linux called OMSA Live that you download from PowerEdge (linux OS) systems management.

This OMSA PERC H700 and H800 control and allows you to do everything.  When you reconfigure the RAID and the PERC card starts the reconstruction, although it seems risky, you can restart under VMware and the reconstruction of the RAID continues on.  And you can analyze with OMSA for VMware.

  • Adding PERC H700 3 drives in PowerEdge R710

    Hi all

I need to increase the storage on a server running non-critical virtual machines.

    I currently have 3 x 600GB discs and a VD in raid 5.
We will be adding 3 more identical drives, staying in raid 5 to increase storage.

I read a few posts about similar improvements where the user was instructed to use OMSA to add readers and keep the data. This server is not running Windows, it works VMESXi 5.5.0.  I'll add the disks directly by the PERC controller... My data at risk doing this? Should I rely on the added time to re - install VMESXi and restore my VMs?

    Thanks in advance!

    J

    Hello

You are wanting to add the new disks for RAID 5 existing or create a new RAID 5? If you create a new, do it in the controller should not be any problem. If you are wanting to expand the existing table that needs to be done in OMSA and not in the controller. You can use OMSA for ESXi http://www.dell.com/support/contents/us/en/19/article/Product-Support/Self-support-Knowledgebase/enterprise-resource-center/Enterprise-Tools/OMSA

  • Check the consistency of the regular Raid

Is it possible to put in place a regular Raid consistency check to say occur every weekend?  We have a T420 with a 310 Perc controller.

    Hello Nick

I'm not aware of an option in one of our applications to automate the consistency checks. I can think of do the simplest is to use a script and a task scheduler in the host operating system. I don't know that you can script to a remote system via IPMI over LAN as well.

For this you need the RACADM capacity, so you would need to install something like node to manage OpenManage Server administrator on the system, you run the commands from. Then, create a batch file. See page 154 of the guide of the user of the OMSA for the syntax:

    omconfig storage vdisk action = checkconsistency = 0 = 0 vdisk controller
    omconfig storage vdisk action = checkconsistency = 0 = 1 vdisk controller
    omconfig storage vdisk = checkconsistency controller action = 0 vdisk = 2

You can use omreport about what your controller and virtual disk ID are. If you have multiple virtual disks, then you can have multiple orders in the same batch as my above command file. You don't need to put anything else in the orders except the omconfig command file. Put just the Task Scheduler to open the batch file when you want than to start consistency checks.

    Thank you

  • Problem with OpenManage integration for vCenter - OMSA status: update required

    Hello

We have a problem with the configuration of OpenManage integration on a vSphere 5.5 U2 Cluster. We have deployed IMO for vCenter v 2.3.0 build 290 aircraft, and we have installed manually OMSA VIB v7.4.0.2 on our 5.5. U2 ESXi hosts.

The question we face is respect for vSphere host - when we start the Wizard "Fix Non compliant vSphere Host" it displays the correct version of the OMSA - 7.4.0.2 but OMSA status is "required update".

Whe test us the connection to hosts using "Test the connection profile", it hangs at 0% and will be never finished.

Also in the OpenManage integration in vSphere Client "Frimware" tab option is grayed out.

Please indicate how we can make this work?

    Concerning

    Milan

Well, I did some research more and found that ESXI 5.5 U1 and U2 don't are not supported by OMSA right now.

    FTP://FTP.Dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_software/esuprt_virt_solutions/Dell-Mgmt-plugin-for-VMware-Center-2.3_Release%20Notes_en-us.PDF

ESXi 5.5 U1 and U2 are supported only for the OMIVV on the servers of 12th and 13th generation who are capable of out-of-band management and require no OMSA must be installed on the host system. We intend to add a supported of the OMSA version at a later date.

  • Reference Dell OMSA Release Date for vSphere 6.0 ViB

    Hello

information about the release dates for vib for vSphere vsphere 6 (OMSA 7.4.1 / 8.0.1 / 8.0.2)

Apart from that... OMSA 8 will continue in two different development branches for T630, R630, R730, R730xd and T430/R430/T530/R530/M630... or will it be a next single version for all serversystems of 13 G.

    Kind regards

    Torsten

    Toki76,

Custom Dell ESXi ISO 6.0 came out 2 days ago. So I guess, from past experience, that the VIB is going to be released very soon behind him, but at the moment I do not see that he launched. I can research to see if I can refine the delivery date well and let you know.

What about OMSA 8, probably a single version which includes the two branches.

  • PowerEdge T310 degraded but hard drives show OK

Thanks to all who read this and who will answer. I have a T310 who took over the company that I work. The server works, but I noticed in open manage the raid showed degraded and the light was flashing on the front of the case, I do not remember the model. The raid controller is a perc s300 with 3 500 gig hds in a raid 5. Open Manage hard disks are fine, said. I don't have an option to rebuild the raid. The only options I have are delete, assign/unassign and rename. I've updated open manage 7.2 to 7.4 and erased the newspapers. The light yellow is lit in blue but watch still degraded raid.

The version of the perc driver is 2.0.0 - 0162

    The bios version is 1.8.2

The serial number is [[[SVC TAG REMOVED BY MODERATOR]]]

The operating system is windows server 2008r2

Any advice would be appreciated. And when you're looking for the latest version of open manage there were several options. What would be the option for an iso of the disk we usually get in the box with a new server? Thank you

The S300 may not report the discs correctly in OMSA and with a failed drive, OMSA may report that everything online, if the State of an array is degraded, you have a failed drive. Check the logs in OMSA to see if you have an entry for a failed drive. If not, go into the bios of the controller and look for the drive which is missing or locate the drive that says "online" but written in red, as is the disk you will need to replace.

  • How to install Dell OMSA on a free host VMware or VMware vSphere Hypervisor comments?

We are virtualizing our 2012 R2 Windows Server and you have a Dell PowerEdge T310 server. We have installed vSphere hypervisor free version 5.5 on the physical server.

Does anyone know how to install the Dell OMSA? I heard that it will not work if it is installed on the Windows Server R2 2012 host because of the virtualization layer.

I read a few posts on how it's done, but I can't always get my head around it. I think I've also seen people install a VIB on the hypervisor vSphere itself?

Can you please describe the General steps or point me in the right direction on how to run the OMSA? The Dell PowerEdge server has a RAID, and we must use OMSA to see a RAID controller unexpected sense errors if they are generated. We used to have a problem with consistency RAID and have had to start again before.

He also seems to be an OMSA plugin for vCenter, but I don't think we can use vCenter because it's the free version of vSphere hypervisor.

    Hello

There are a lot of articles and posts on how to install OMSA under VMware. If you encounter problems then please post an explanation of what you are having problems with. Here's a post I did on the subject. It has a link to a youtube video that includes step by step instructions:

    http://community.Spiceworks.com/topic/403141-Dell-open-mange-in-VMware

He also seems to be an OMSA plugin for vCenter, but I don't think we can use vCenter because it's the free version of vSphere hypervisor.

Integration of OpenManage for VCenter requires always the OMSA agent must be installed on the hypervisor. Correct, it is not a free version of VCenter. No installation procedure who advises using VUM or VCenter should be ignored because you will not have access to these utilities.
