Operation on *.vmdk file failed

I had an operation on file *.vmdk problem failed. I could give up, try again or connect to the client. Connection for the client (W 7 Ultimate) has not helped because the client became unresponsive. I checked the mac with the utilitiy of disk drive, but the drive seems to be OK. Then I turned off the machine. Check the log as an attachment file.

I rebuild the virtual disk but that crashed with the attached report. Fortunately I could launch the client machine. But I wonder what was going on?

Input / output errors are usually a symptom of a failing drive.

Run a utility that can scan the surface of the disc to ensure its consistency, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools utility (which comes with the AppleCare).

Essentially, we ask to read and write to a file, and the OS itself is impossible on the physical plane and the reports with an IO error.

It's maybe just a few sectors are corrupt, and that is where your life of the Virtual Machine, but it can also indicate that your hard drive has failed.  It will probably get worse over time, and it is strongly recommended that you get your backup data and review the material.

Well, think a little more. How do Oracle, running on the database server, suppose to know where is this TESTDIR ? It is on a web server and not another server?

And if she knew that, how are there supposed to carve his way through the network and access of this server files and directories penetrate this server?

If so, then what other options I have to read a file file system that is not on the database Unix machine and throw in a database table?

Depends on the requirements. Why do you need to load the contents of a directory in the database tables?

You can use SQL * Loader, run on the web server and easily download a lot of files in the database. But if these o/s files are updates then the uploads of db are obsolete, and this process must be repeated again and again in order to synchronize the content of the file table of database with the actual files on the web server.

You can use Samba or NFS to share the directory on the web server and mount it locally on the database server. But this increases the number of moving parts and also increases the complexity of security and access control.

You can use the rdist (cable) of Linux/Unix command to create and manage a duplicate directory on the database server - a bit like replication at the file system level.

Or you can enable access to these files via the web server (such as a web service or directly). In this case, the database server need only the URL of the file to access. Instead of storing the actual content of the file in the database, the URL may instead be stored. And when the content is required, PL/SQL code can use UTL_HTTP for example to retrieve the content of the file.

I think that most of the other options will fall into one of these categories. The "best" depends on your needs.

  • The operation on the file "/... /... vmdk ' failed

I have a single file (DevMachine - 000003.vmdk to be exact) a computer virtual disk set that has an old date on it for 12 hours before the other drives.  That date seems to be the last time a snapshot has occurred.  Now I can start the virtual machine, but when starting the virtual machine the Win 7 it can never get fully active or dies.  I have attached the full error messages.  I restarted to ensure that memory is not a problem. Attached are the support files and images of the error if someone can help me eventually.  Incident support paid in VMWare has now no answer for 5 hours and I'm getting desperate as billable hours slip away.  Thank you very much.

    Full of the error:

    The operation on the file "/ Volumes/Data/FusionVM/CU Fusion.vmwarevm/Dev Machine - 000003.vmdk ' failed.

If the file is located on a remote file server, make sure that the network connection and the server where this residesare disk works properly. If the file is saved on a removable medium, link media.

Select Retry to retry the operation.

Click Cancel to end this session.

Select continue to pass the error to the guest operating system.

Hi dodegaardand welcome to the VMware communities!

Looks like 750 GByte HDD Toshiba your MacBook Pro is a failure.  You should probably have the hard drive tested (and replaced if necessary) and checked before attempting to retrieve your VM.

  • I - delta.vmdk files, non - .vmsn files. How to restore the instant guest operating system?

    Hello

Coincidentally, using the browser data store, I've deleted almost all the files in one of the guest OS. Only files vmdk (dish and delta) have survived. So far I've managed to run (using this link http://tinyurl.com/yda5f8d ( ) the guest using OS his - flat.vmdk file and it works very well. The problem is, it's an operating system in the former State, and I would go back to the last snapshot (I have two actually).

I have ESXi 3.5 and the use of the Mode of Tech support. So I base (flat) file and not visible (from vClient) snapshot two working files. Browser data store using I can see them under delta.vmdk - 000001-xxx and xxx-000002 - delta.vmdk. Should what kind of magic I type in the console to restore my operating system in the lates snapshot? It's ok to merge these snapshots in a main flat file if it would be faster or easier.

    Concerning

    Piotr

OK, let's give it a try.

Attached you will find a collection of files that are generated, assuming that the snapshot 000002 was the last. I'll give you the steps to make sure that the current data files will not be affected where 000001 was the last snapshot.

    1. delete the virtual machine of the inventory
    2. Download files attached to the virtual machine file
    3. Delete the w2003r2.vmsd file if it exists.
    4. Right-click on the vmx file and select "add to the inventory.
    5. Open the virtual machine settings and uncheck the box "connect to power on" for the network card (only to make sure that the virtual machine does not connect to the network, where the snapshots are not in the right order)
    6. Important: Create a new snapshot, and to ensure that the new vmdk file is referenced in the disk of the virtual machine settings

Now you can try it without risk of turning the virtual computer and check if everything seems OK. I suggest that you take a look at the Windows event logs and check if the last entries are from the scheduled date. Because you have turned on on the VM from the file (flat) base, run 'chkdsk /f' for all readers to solve possible problems.

If this doesn't seem to be the right order, please report and I will edit the files to make snapshot 000001 the current.

Once everything is ok you should really consider deleting snapshots. To ensure that this does no new issues, please provide the build number of your hosts ESXi and the amount of free disk space on the data store!

  • Cannot create a virtual machine with a vmdk file copied from another location, please find the attached error

    Hi all

I copied a file from one place vmdk and try to make a new virtual machine with this vmdk file. But when I turn on after the creation of vm error is coming. Error in the text and the image below

    Error stack

An error was received from the ESX host turning on DBServer VM.

Could not open scsi0:0 disc: disc not supported or not valid type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported.

This error message generally if the hard files have been copied hosted as VMware Workstation product, which uses a format of sparse file that is not supported on an ESXi host. Instead of the hard copy, you can use VMware Converter, or - if you prefer - you can convert the hard using vmware-vdiskmanager (before transfer) or vmkfstools (after downloading). I deal to use vmkfstools you will need to load the mutliextent module (see for example "Clone or migration operations involving virtual discs non-VMFS on ESXi fail with an error" vSphere 5.1 Release Notes)

  • Windows 7 vmdk file not found, but it's really there...

Had a running instance of MAX OS 10.9.2 Fusion 6 and a VM Windows 7, everything worked fine.  Had to reinstall the operating system using the procedure of restoration of Mac (alt - R during startup) to remove stuff JAMF Casper and re - take control of my machine after leaving a company. After recovery / re-install of OS X... I tried to use the original VM file and the merger could not find the vmdk files. So I restored a "Windows 7.vmwarevm" VM file Time machine. Same exact results... Fusion is up fine, recognizes the Windows 7 VM, but is not able to find the file "Windows 7.vmdk". When I try to start the virtual machine, I get the error message "could not open the file" / users/brucekreis/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized / 7.vmwarevm/Windows 7.vmdk Windows ":"the system cannot find the specified file". ".

I can see it in a terminal window, checked that I am the owner of all files and directories in the tree, and they have at least the permissions for the owner, RW read only for all the rest... I changed the permissions to all access for files and dir (chmod-r 777 < dir >) tree and even reset the ACL (r n < dir > chmod). I can change the configuration files using the console VMware fusion library and check that it changes through the terminal window.  I tried to delete the .lck files and catch instant and re-did the file .vxm to the 7.vmdk Windows, without any change in the error message.

I always suspect permissions, ACL, or something dealing with the recovery changed. I restored the original file .vmwarevm yet once, so you can see it of original state before I started to make changes and ran the util to collect information of technical support. I attached the zip file.

FWIW... I tried to import the virtual machine and create a new virtual machine from this instance, but it is gray in molten selection windows, as if it is not recognized as a valid VM.

    Thank you in advance...

You are missing two scopes binary "twoGbMaxExtentSparse', a basic disk, and the other from the first snapshot disk.

It is a workaround solution mainly for the express purpose of recovering data from the user, which is stored in the virtual hard disk, not necessarily get working 100% again.

    Copy Windows 7 - s040.vmdk for Windows 7 - s009.vmdk and Windows 7-000001 - s039.vmdk for Windows 7-000001 - s008.vmdk.

This replaces the missing binary extensions with empty extents.  This allows VMware Fusion a string of competition and makes it look like a complete set of files hard.

The problem is the two missing bodies, look at the size of each before and after, there will be some lack of content.  How the mission critical, can not say.

You can try to start normally or start first with an ISO Image live and make recovering data first, and then try to run normally.  I can't say exactly what will be broken/missing except however backups clean* you don't have much choice.

    ==========

    * It is a known fact that Time Machine is not 100% reliable backing up/restoring VMS in all circumstances/conditions.  Also back up Virtual Machines via Time Machine of disk/time intensive and wastes a lot of space for something that may be corrupted and worthless time to restore it.  At least I would exclude the Virtual Machines with virtual machines and Time Machine shutdown, not suspended and VMware Fusion closed and then manually copy the VMS to another location, preferably on a different physical hard drive.  So keep the user data stored in the virtual machine saved out of the Virtual Machine on a regular basis in order to always have a backup of the current user data.  If you need to restore a properly saved by VM is not as common at least you will have a virtual working Machine and data user to go forward with when you find out your Time Machine backup of the virtual machine fails.

  • ENVY of HP dv7: copy the file fails error on disk 2 to 58% HP recovery

My hard drive in my dv7 ENVY dies for the second time in two years (it was under warranty last time and I was able to fix). I bought the hard drive same exact (Samsung, 1 TB), tested in BIOS, past everything. When I try to make the image recovery with the HP recovery discs I received the last time my hard drive died, I get an error then that 58% on two recovery disc that says:

    Reducer

    Copy the file fails

    From: d:\preload\base24. STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

    To: c:\RM\Image\BASE24. STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

    Press OK to retry.

I press OK and it does the same thing over and over again. People who questioned him on this same type of error seem to get anywhere here, but what choice do I have? The hard drive is the same size, same manufacturer, same model, it should have the question of reimage the system on a hard drive more small, right?

Am I just out of luck on that? So frustrated.

    Hello;

Let me welcome you on the HP forums!

I read your post on recovery issues and wanted to help.

Here is the link to the tool of creation of win8.1 media: installation media to create for Windows - 8.1 help Windows

Understand, however, you might encounter a problem installing using the media created from this tool.

You have a version of OEM HP of Win8 installed on your PC, and this means that the product key that is embedded in the motherboard UEFI firmware is OEM, not retail.

While the media created from this tool SHOULD be activated using this key, there is no guarantee he will do.  If it is not the case, you can use this tool to recover your product key and try to enter it manually: Download Windows OEM Product Key Tool - MajorGeeks

IF it still does not work, then your only recourse would be to order a new set of recovery from HP discs.

You can look online for recovery from the paged media related: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, enter your product name or number. On your software page and download the drivers, select your operating system and version. Click on "Update".  If the HP recovery support is available for your computer, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for the command Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click on the symbol '+' to expand this entty and click on order to press for more details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:

If you live in the United States or the Canada, details are on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

If you live elsewhere, contact details are on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

NOTE: once you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to someone ' one - it can take a while!

However, HP customer care is generally not available on weekends, so you will have to wait until Monday to contact them.

    Good luck

  • An unattend file fails on a specific model for laptop...

I have an answer to work unattended installation file that I used on the 64-bit Win7E one year machines. I used it on Dell and Panasonic

computers desktop and portable toughbooks. Now, I have a laptop e6430, and the unattend file fails to pass Spec (Shell-Setup).

In addition, this unattended installation has been used throughout on a different model of Dell 6430 very well. I changed nothing. This is not a license issue.

I even do not activate the Admin until it's on the desk (we use a generic admin account during unattended Setup and manually activate the Admin on the desktop).

If anyone has any ideas, that would be great. I need to get this machine Sysprep. Is not a software problem, as I Sysprep machine

I just installed the operating system and drivers on and nothing else, and it has always failed.

    Hi Rick,

Your question of Windows 7 is more complex than what is generally answered in the Microsoft Community forums. It is better suited for the IT Pro TechNet public. Please post your question in the Microsoft TechNet forum; You can follow the link to your question:

  • Attempts of P2V - results in multiple instances of VMDK files

    Hello

I have all my servers migrated to VMware. Then, I noticed on the P2V who does not first left a directory with the name of the server with only an inside VMDK file and not other files generated. Is there a better way to clean these failed attempts in vSphere? For now I'm just looking at the settings of each guest to see what it points to a file VMDK, then by removing those that none of my guests make reference. It seems that I have about 500 GB of failed attempts of P2V in my data store.

You can use RVTools (RVTools - homepage) to connect to your vSphere, go to the Vsante tab and search for zombie vmdk.

This zombie files can be deleted, since they are not associated with virtual machines for security.

  • CTK. The VMDK files will be created automatically

We have a virtual machine called ISTQB, yesterday morning, it was noted that it is offline. On the survey, we found that the virtual machine has a 'necessary consolidation' message. I completed the consolidation that has failed. Investigation of the data store in which resides the virtual computer, we found CTK. VMDK files for each of the hard disks. After some research, I removed the CTK. VMDK files and succeeded in turning on the virtual computer. Now, we would like to know how this happened? The problems seem to start at about 07:06 25/06/2014.

Can someone explain or share your point of view on this.

A file separate .ctk is created for each virtual disk file (hard), i.e. for basic disks, but also snapshots. Once a snapshot is deleted, its associated .ctk file is also deleted. However .ctk of the virtual disk file base/parent is updated and is NOT cleared, which is the behavior expected/wanted

I would say that you do not remove the .ctk files manually, unless you are invited by the VMware Support, for example to do!

  • Native clones of the name.vmdk file hierarchy is too deep

I'm just kicking the tires on this new 5.1.2 environment and testing to get it up and running, but I see some really weird storage related issues while trying to do the basic tasks in the GUI.  When I try to provide more than 1 VM in a TIME I get an error indicating insufficient permissions or data store has exceeded its limit on the number of files and when I try to publish things in an organization in the catalogue of this organization I get an error message indicating that the native clones of the vmdk file hierarchy is too deep.

The storage array access r/w and root for data warehouses, so I really feel like permissions are not the issue.  Does anyone have ideas on this?

While trying to provide more than 1 VM in a paralytic:

    Thanks in advance!

    Resolved:

This has proved to be a problem associated with VAAI table level.  We run R31 code on our storage VNX and 'Clone support nested VAAI' array not coming into game until R32/INYO to VNX.  I temporarily spent at FC storage because doing an upgrade right now is not an option for us, but I did a few tests by installing the data warehouses NFS to an array of INYO to these hosts and managed the same tasks without problem (very quickly I might add).

  • recover data from a vmdk file

    Hello

I'm trying to recover a vmdk file or get data out of it. When I try:

    VMware - vdiskmanager.exe - e YYY.vmx
Could not open the disc "YYY.vmx": the specified file is not a virtual disk (0xf00003ebf).
Could not open the disc "YYY.vmx": the specified file is not a virtual disk (0xf00003ebf).
Drive chain is not consistent: the specified file is not a virtual disk (0xf00003ebf).
If I try to run it against the vmdk file itself, not the - sXXX.vmdk, I get the same error.
If I try to mount it, I get:
    VMware - mount.exe k: YYY. VMDK
Impossible to mount the virtual drive. The disk can be used by a virtual machine, may not be enough volumes or mounted under another drive letter. If not, check that the file is a valid virtual disk file.

The discs and the VM machine is in suspend mode.

Can I do to recover the data in the vmdk files?

    Thank you.

What I would try creating a boot of Linux Live OS VM from a Linux Live OS ISO Image with HARD drive pointing to usernamfs - shared_f.vmdk and see if you can see the contents of the disc.  I use Knoppix or Slax to do this but a Linux Live operating system will automatically detect and be able to mount the VHD is fine.  Another way to try to get a look and maybe even pick up a few dates user opens the hard with WinImage as usually, it does not perform the depth verifying that vmware-mount done.

  • Cannot resize the virtual disk, the virtual machine by using a «child» vmdk file

    Release: VMWare workstation 9

    SE host: Windows 7 64-bit

    Screenshots below.

I want to resize my VM from 50 GB to 100 GB.

It seems that VMware workstation 9 uses a child for my VM vmdk.  In my case, using its "Windows Server 2008 R2 x 64 - 000001.vmdk" for its virtual disk file.  The correct file should be "Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.vmdk", I think.

There are currently no snapshots registered for this virtual machine, I see.

The virtual machine works well as is, but I can't resize the disk without the VMWare gui, saying I should be perform the operation on the parent vmdk file.

It seems that I do run a snapshot that is not really a snapshot?  How to merge with the older files - Sxx.vmdk to 0000xx - Sxxx.vmdk

I also tried to use the command line tool to manually resize the vmdk parent, but I get permission "access denied" errors.

    Kind regards

    Matt

He no snapshots are displayed in the Manager of snapshot with the check box 'Show AutoProtect snapshots' verified then the snapshot is an orphan and the best way I use normally to fix this if I want the contents of the snapshot of orphan to be among the basic disk is with tab of the virtual machine in VMware Workstation GUI closed I simply delete the .vmsd file and then open the virtual machine tab in the VMware Workstation GUI and cover and immediately remove a snapshot in the Snapshot Manager.  This will force the orphan snapshot to merge with the parent disk.  Then to clean I still remove the .vmsd file and orphans, .vmsn and .vmem file.

Note: Before the procedure you have a good backup of the virtual machine in case you accidentally mess something up.

  • Expanded VMDK files

    Hello

I have a strange problem here. I have a box of Red Hat Linux that is put into service with 3 disks. HDD1 (thinly provisioned) operating root partition and that allotted space is 10 GB inside the BONE, but it is 60 GB upgraded from VMWare. For some reason the VMDK file is grown up (provisioned) to 60 GB but inside the BONE when I run df - h, it is show / 3 GB used out of 10 GB.

I don't take any cliché, so there is no way, it's because of this.

Can Linux OS can cause HDD1 for grown in VMWare level without affecting the partitions?

    Help, please

    Thanks in advance.

As mentioned by Tsjo, the 'size' is what is physically used by the virtual machine and the 'set up' is the size that you defined during the creation of the virtual disc service end. "Configured" size you see in the virtual machine Summary tab is the maximum size that the virtual machine can use on the data store, not what it is currently using.
