Oversubscription VSM

Hello world!

I have the critical state of the software on one of the servers VSM. I checked the logs and there was an error "recorder_oversubscribed." In the newspapers Mary errors related to excess applications. When I checked the status of the /media1 repository I found that the drive indicate the use of 95%. In the same time repository /media2 used only 23% of the free space. As I understand I have to make a balance between these readers with a script. But I have not found any script that can help me without lost any data. Can someone help with this problem?
VSM version 7.2 and RAID-6 configuration with 12 disks.

Thank you.

.

You are right.  In the current model of VSMs, whenever a flow of data record is started, it assigned one of the repositories available media registered in the system, and that's where * he stays * no matter how lopsided the storage in repositories becomes.

The only non-destructive solution I've seen to this problem involves intelligently and _manually_ select which records you want to reassign to repositories other settings using the created Cisco support script 'chloc.sh '.  This script updates the database backend for an individual record VSMS and ordered to run * new * records in a spare storage space.  This means that you * don't * see dramatic changes of storage immediately.  Most of the video data will shift / time / new data accumulates in the new location, while being "organic farming" (gradually) treated away from the original location.

If this is a possibility, you must open a case of pension of TAC for assistance of official support for this issue.  They can provide you with the above shell script.

If this isn't an option, I could describe the processes required to accomplish what you need, but I am NOT Cisco, and all actions would be at YOUR OWN RISK.

    Hello Alex,.

Are you using the Web Client vSphere vCenter? VSM 4.6 icons appear only on the web interface.

If you use the web client and still does not work, you must restart the services vCenter.

  • EQL / VSM / MEM / vSphere upgrade order

    Hello

I see now that v8, MEM 1.3 EQL and VSM 4.5 have been released as EPA so I can upgrade to vSphere 6!

Is there an order of upgrade recommended for all of these components?  I guess EQL v8 first, then the environment vSphere, then MEM, then VSM?

I think I read THAT MEM 1.2 was not compatible with vSphere 6?  If this is the case, I guess I have to switch to the RR before upgrading vSphere and then apply 1.3 MEM?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

I agree first of all of the firmware on board.  Remove the MEM, then upgrade vSphere Server v6 then ESXi nodes to v6.0.  You can do MEM or VSM in order any at that time.

  • VM Exchange or SQL with instant HIT Kit and VSM

    Hello

I wonder if someone could explain a bit more on integration of VSM and HIT kit without scenario ISCSI based comments like below...

Exchange and SQL servers are run under vm on Vcenter/Vsphere 5.5 environment, and there is no comments ISCSI connection which means that all disks are vmdk.

So, based on this scenario, is it possible to use the HIT kit to restore data (granular level) even if the snapshot has been taken by VSM data store option?

    Thanks in advance...

    Hello

No, you cannot use HIT / ME in this case.   The HIT kit requires the MS ISCSI initiator to work properly. For creation and restoration of snapshots.

VSM is against the whole VMFS data store.  First VCS invites you to create snapshots, the VMware VMDK VSM will require instant volume EQL.

VSM don't offer currently not at the file level restore.  However, you can do it manually.

Bring the EQL data store snapshot online.

Connect to a node ESXi and add this snapshot of the data store to that node.

(With storage add, after a new analysis of the ESXi iSCSI initiator)

It renames the snapshot of the data store for: "snapshot - XXXXXX -

You can do a few things here.  Copy the original entire virtual disk of the snapshot to the data store. Or more generally to add the file VMDK from the snapshot on another virtual computer as another drive.

When you start the virtual computer, it will appear as a new drive letter.  Then, you can copy individual files of this copy.

An important thing to note.  When you use a snapshot, you will use instant reserve.  So make sure if you attach not already 100% instant reserve that increase you it as much as possible.  If you consume the reserve of the snapshot, you work with is removed.  According to which EQL FW version, you can borrow from the free space.  This is especially true if you replace a VMDK set.   That will use up to the reserve very quickly...

When you are finished with the EQL snapshot, make sure first that no VMs still use it.  Then put the instant EQL offline in EQL GUI.  And then do a rescan the iSCSI initiator in ESXi GUI.  This will cleanly remove the volume from the node ESXi.  Otherwise, he might try constantly to reconnect to the EQL snapshot, generating errors repeated in the EQL GUI and alerts if you have set up.

  • Reference Dell EqualLogic HIT/VSM - VMware license terms.

    Hello.

I read the release notes of Virtual Storage Manager 4.0, vSphere, conditions of licence, they are required:

    License terms for vSphere
VSM comes with licenses and the following features:

    VSM: VSphere license any

VASA: vCenter 5.0 or later version, ESXi 4.0 or later, any vSphere license
In addition, the storage array firmware allows use the following features that VSM is installed:

vStorage API for integration (VAAI) table: business, Enterprise Plus on ESXi license
    4.1 or later.

    Issues related to the:

    1. I'll be able to run VSM with vSphere Essentials Plus? VAAI at least requires vSphere Enterprise License. What are the consequences if I deploy with vSphere Essentials Plus.

    2 VSM supports ESXi 5.5 U2?

    Thank you

    Paul

VASA is a feature you don't need basic VSM features.  Which is what the release notes are trying to say.   VASA allows VMware request more information on storage volumes.   I.e. through VASA VCS calls can show that a volume is RAIDed storage, integrates snapshots or replicas.   Currently, the usefulness of the VASA is limited, even when it is available.   VASA is the first step to VMware to better understand a storage array capabilities. More features will be coming in future versions of ESXi.

However, to make the VASA work any, the storage provider must provide software 'glue' for specific HW calls of a query of VCS.   VSM, is what has the code, known as a "provider of VASA.   A translator of sorts.

  • VSM in bound Mode

I got on this forum as VSM 4 is not supported in linked however mode when I deploy VSM 2 one for each vcenter A and B in the web interface I am only able to manage the VSM who was installed last on B.

No matter if I connect to the vcenters web interface A or B vcenters web interface I can only still manage theVSM that was installed last.

    Hello

Sorry, but MSM v4 does any work in a connected mode environment that you discovered.  So you should either to change the configuration of VCS or not use VSM in that moment.

  • VSM 4 snaps and vmware

Hello. I have an environment that consists of hosts esxi 5.1, vcenter 5.5 and 4 VSM. I have a question about recovering files of catch instant equalllogic. I did it with success in cloning the snapshot and the vmdk mounted another guest vm but it seems there is a better way to do it without wasting time and space through cloning. Since I already have a component data store snap-in can't get this data bank in vcenter? It won't let me see the data store of having the same signature as the data store existing. Is there a solution for this? Also can I add the vmdk from wink to my existing guest VM without any problems? I get a warning that the guest virtual machine already has a player with the signature, and it can cause starting problems when you use the clone vmdk. Thank you.

To recover a file, I do not use VSM recover option.   I bring the snapshot online EQL GUI.  A new analysis on a node ESXi.   Do "Add storage" and will the snapshot.   Then I use a test VM and add the VMDK this VM.   Then you can copy the files you need quickly.   I use test VM, because when you did, you have to stop the virtual machine in order to remove the VMDK of this VM.

One of the main reasons for the VSM uses is a clone, if you book enough reserve snapshot, the snapshot might get deleted during the restore process.    The partial copy would invalidate probably your VM and the worst case, there was only one snapshot lets you down.  A clone ensures that can't happen.

If you want to copy a VMDK together, you can do that too.  Same process as above but don't add it to a virtual computer.  Using the VI client browse to the snapshot, find the VM and the right mouse on the VMDK and make a 'copy', then you can 'stick' on the origin of the VMDK.   It is faster I think.

Remember, make sure you have instant reserve or active Instant loan if you want to do this.

Finally, when you are finished with the snapshot, go to EQL GUI.  Put it in offline mode.  THEN go to the VI client and rescan this node.  Configuration-> adapters for storage-> right mouse on iSCSI adapter-> Rescan.

  • vCenter could not connect to the VSM Server

I have SanHQ and HIT running well on vSphere 4.1. After upgrading vSphere 5.5 and HIT to 4 VSM, my new vCenter could not connect to the VSM server at all.

1 VSM ip address must be configured on the management or iSCSI network?

    2. I have 2 vCenters to AC and DC, respectively. In this case, I have to install 2 VSM, each to each site? Note that although my VM networks on both sites and management are all connected via VPN, iSCSI networks are isolated.

    3. is it possible to deploy the VSM 3.5 and 4 so that the two vmware VI Client and Web Client have access to VSM features?

VSM does not work with Linked vCenters mode so that a VSM would be able to access the two vCenters.

You will need to deploy both VSMs.

You cannot run two MSM 3.5.x and 4.0.x at the same time.

  • VSM does not not after upgrade

    Hello

I improved VSM 3.5.2 to 3.5.3 and then also improved 5.1 to 5.5 vSphere and now the VSM plug-in has disappeared. On the console when I start the VM I see this

So I called EqualLogic support, they advised of any re - install a new device by downloading the full ISO (not the upgrade one).

Apparently something in the Java machine is broken,... so I just did as they advised as I didn't have so many scheduled tasks listed VSM.

You can also make a backup of the database and re - import into your new installation.

  • VSM 4.0.1.2063 certificate expires 26.4.2014!

    Hello

We deployed the VSM available 4.0.1.2063 a few weeks ago.
The certificate will expire the 26.4.2014

What happens when the certificate is expired?  What can we do?

    Concerning

Great!   You'll be fine.  The VSM Web site just to get the diags, or be redirected to the VCS GUI web.  All communications to VSM for VCS is not made using this web certificate.

It will get fixed in a future version of the VSM.
